Anime Boston 2013

LETTER FROM THE CON CHAIR Greetings! On behalf of the New England Anime Society, our honored guests, and the entire Anime Boston staff, it is my honor and pleasure to welcome you to Anime Boston 2013! Last year, we partied hard and celebrated our tenth Anime Boston, and it was fabulous! As was reflected in our end-of-the world theme, we were tentatively planning for it to be our last. After all, wasn't the world supposed to end on 12/21/12? After waking up on the 22nd and realizing that the Earth was still turning, some of us panicked and started holiday shopping while some others among us started planning for the convention. I kid, I kid! (Mostly) none of us believed that there was any chance that the world was going to end, and if there was still a chance that Anime Boston 2013 would take place, then we planned to be ready. Some of you may not realize that we start planning the next year's event within weeks of Closing Ceremonies. It is a year-long effort to produce our three-day convention, and the ones who start the ball rolling are our hard-working elected staff and their assistants. Their names are listed in the back of this program guide, right before the autograph page. Flip back there right now and check it out. Don't worry, I'll still be here when you're done. Did you see it? Did you see the list of the executives, the directors, the managers, the assistants, and all the rest of the approximately 400 people who work to put on this show? Many of them will spend this weekend in blue, orange and red Anime Boston staff shirts, but many others will be wearing black so that they can work backstage, while some others dress up a bit more and work with our esteemed guests and industry friends. While our attire may vary, our goal is the same: to put on an amazing show for all of you. It takes 400 people, and a year's worth of time to put together this convention, and all of us volunteer our time and energy to the cause. That said, while you're enjoying the convention, hurrying from one amazing event to the next, please take a couple of extra seconds to thank some of the people who help to make Anime Boston a reality. You, our beloved horde, are the ones we ultimately do this for, and knowing that we're putting on a good show means the world to us. Cheer and Warm Regards,

Andrea M. Finnin Anime Boston Con Chairman

GUESTS OF HONOR japanese guests

Shinichi Watanabe

Yasuhiro Koshi

Director

Actor

Shinichi Watanabe (aka “Nabeshin”) is known to anime fans as a larger-than-life, iconic figure with an outrageous sense of humor.

Yasuhiro Koshi is known as an actor and chief advisor for action movies in Japan and the U.S.

He directed the comedy anime series Excel Saga, Nerima Daikon Brothers, and Puni Puni Poemy, which feature frenetic pacing and appearances by his animated alter ego, a mysterious, recurring character with an afro and distinctive outfit who is tangential to the story.

Using his knowledge and experience as a former sergeant in Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force, he provides advice for battle action scenes, military roles, weapon design, and so on.

Nabeshin has also served as series director for The Wallflower and Tenchi Muyo! GXP, and he can be found in these series as well, in cameo or supporting roles. Nabeshin has been quoted as saying that he places great importance in making viewers laugh. Stating that he values laughter as much as tears, his preference is to motivate viewers to have fun and enjoy a show. He reasons that his success stems from provoking the same, strong emotional investment “in a humorous way” as a traditional, sentimental story does. Nabeshin has also written lyrics for the opening songs of Excel Saga and Tenchi Muyo! GXP, and has served as storyboarder and episode director for a variety of other anime series.

He served as the chief military advisor and had guest appearances in many movies, including Battle Royal (2000), Returner (2002), Battle Royal II (2003), Last Samurai (2003), Calamari Wrestler (2004), Casshern (2004), Devilman (2004), Godzilla Final Wars (2004), Ultraman (2004), Lorelei (2005), Saikano: She's the Final Weapon (2006), and Sukeban Deka which he has a major role in. Most recently he has worked as a military advisor for parts 1 and 3 of 20th Century Boys, and he was a consultant on the Space Battleship Yamato live action movie, recently released to Blu-ray. Mr. Koshi is a well-known writer for the popular Japanese periodical called "Arms Magazine". He has also published articles on the history of weapons and uniforms of the Japan Self-Defense Force. He is also a talent manager who works closely with the Japanese anime and J-pop industry! He heads up the Big Fighter Project (B.F.P.) which has been producing talented artists since 1996.

IBI

Fashion Designer

Japanese designer Naoto Hirooka’s gothic and lolita fashion line h. NAOTO has accumulated positive reviews and praise from both Japanese and Western markets. After receiving positive stimulation from collaborations with charismatic visual-kei artists, h.NAOTO started the “h.ism” project in the mid 2000s based on the theme of fashion and music coexisting in one entity. In 2007, the success of h.ism led to a collaboration with the young fashion design duo IBI and MINT. “Sixh.” was born. Started by IBI, the fashion line Sixh. unites visual-kei artistry with the imagery of popular host and hostess clubs. A new theme, ghost-kei, was created by combining the words “gothic” and “host” into “ghost”. Without a doubt, Sixh.’s cool, carefree ideas are not restricted by ordinary rules of fashion or society. In 2007, Sixh. expanded from a fashion brand into a band with the same name. By 2011, Sixh. have evolved a new concept “SIXH. Opera”. They created the idea to combine Fashion and Opera on the stage. They have performed their SIXH. Opera in Chicago, LA and Tokyo. In 2012, designer IBI designed Visual girls band “existtrace” stage outfits and also, collaborated on a Manga with them. h. NAOTO’s fashion line and band Sixh. is constantly adapting and merging with ever-evolving Japanese counterculture. At heart, Sixh. is the sixth sense beyond the five senses! www.kincs.jp/fashion/sixh

Vocalist

Olga Yakovleva, better known under the moniker ORIGA, is a Russian vocalist, born in a small town of Kochenevo in the Novosibirsk Region of Russia. Her music studies began when she was 5 and at age 11, she was invited to appear on a children’s TV program to perform a song she had written. From that time on, her studies of voice and composition have never stopped. During her education at the Novosibirsk Musical College (19861990), she participated in various themed-based festivals and competitions, refining her own style as a popular singer on stage. In December of 1990, she went to Japan on a 3-month personal invitation and took part in several festivals in the City of Sapporo as a representative of Russian culture. At the same time, she signed a contract with the ROAD & SKY Company, and, in May of 1994, she went to Tokyo to record her first album and launch her career as a singer and composer. Anime fans may recognize her as the vocalist for all three opening themes of the popular anime series “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex”, which allowed her to work with famed composer Yoko Kanno and perform together with her in several concerts. She is also known for recording songs for other anime such as “Fantastic Children”, and more recently the video game “Final Fantasy XIII-2”. Origa continues to work on new projects, and is excited to further both her studies and career in music.

Can You Keep it Up? (Cosplay Game's Late Night In-Character Contest)

This is VERY NOT serious in-character contest, where our handpicked contestants will be doing their best to remain in character while being put through several challenges and physical endeavors. We will also be asking the hard questions to our cosplayers, such as: how does Ash Ketchum pick up ladies at the gym? What is Ramma's stance on same-sex marriage? What is Death the

Kid's favorite kind of swimsuit? What theme would Haruhi have if she could build her own theme park? As well as many more we just have to ask! This is one late night event that you won’t want to miss.

Cosplay Chess

In Cosplay Human Chess a giant chessboard is set up on stage, and convention attendees in costume as favorite anime and manga characters serve as the pieces, moving, fighting and dying live on stage at the direction of two chess masters. Each year’s chess showdown has a unique storyline and themed teams, like Magic vs. Science, or Good vs. Evil. Events in Chess are usually a combination of improvisation and pre-scripted events, with a different balance every year between the spontaneous and the preplanned. Participants apply online before the convention, and are chosen in advance.

Each separate event is complete in itself, but attendees and audience members who watch or participate in the events get to see their favorite characters progress and help their favorite teams to victory. The participants in and events of the plot line are partly decided in advance, but the actual winners of the competitions and rivalries are determined live by the participants and the audience as events progress.

Dating Game / Afterdark Dating Game

The Anime Dating Games are cosplay game show events in which an eligible bachelor (or bachelorette) from anime, video games or manga asks questions to three bachelorettes (or bachelors) in order to determine whom he (or she) should choose for a date! There are two sessions of the Anime Dating Game, an all-ages version on Saturday and a late-night Afterdark version on Friday night. The questions asked vary from comedic, to innocent, to blatant innuendo. Ever wondered who Sasuke from Naruto would choose as a date? How about Saber from Fate/Stay Night? Anyone is fair game! This year, our special Afterdark round is for characters who hunt the things that go bump in the night, but never seem to have the time to hunt for love for themselves.

The cosplay Family Feud is a cosplay game show event where a family, group or team of convention attendees in costume and acting as characters from anime, video games or manga compete to guess which answers would be given most often by the attendees of Anime Boston. EVENTS there's just one problem: canon. There is loads of great costuming to be had in characters who may never exist, whether it is Shinigami Ash Ketchum, gender swapped Sebastian Michaelis, or a protagonist that is entirely original. We have seen a lot of original costumes over the years at Anime Boston, but we have never had an event to showcase them, until now. Introducing the Original Costume Fashion show, a costume fashion show dedicated entirely to non-canonical characters. This fashion show is dedicated to cosplayers iconoclastic enough to break canon and dedicated enough to make high-quality costumes nonetheless. Sound like fun? Then get psyched to watch AB's first ever Original Costume Fashion Show.

Scavenger Hunt

Anyone can play this relaxed in-the-halls scavenger hunt. Pick up a Scavenger Hunt form from the Info Desk. On it will be a list of cosplayers to look for and get signatures (or photos) from. Can you find all four members of a bishounen quartet? How about a cyborg vampire? A male Duo Maxwell cosplayer? You can play alone or on a team. The first five to complete the hunt and return completed forms to the Info Desk win a prize. For those who want an extra challenge, once you complete the first scavenger hunt you will have the option to try a more challenging one! The first to complete and return the advanced scavenger hunt will be welcomed up onto the stage before the Chess Match on Sunday morning to claim a trophy.

amvs Anime Boston's Anime Music Video Contest is an exhibition and competition of fan-created music videos with an anime theme. Showing on Friday and Saturday night, check the schedule for the time and locations.

dances Anime Boston is going back home… to the Boston Park Plaza. Both the informal and formal dances will be held at the Boston Park Plaza Castle, at 130 Columbus Avenue. The Castle is approximately one mile from the convention center, at the corner of Columbus Ave. and Arlington St. For you long-time ABer's, this is the location of the first two years of Anime Boston. The Castle offers a huge function space; the largest this event has been hosted in yet! We’ve taken no shortcuts when planning this event. We’re still going to bring you the same great DJs and atmosphere that’s you’ve come to expect at an Anime Boston dance. Returning this year will be Greg Ayres and his team of DJs as well as our fabulous hosts at the formal ball.

Getting To & From the Dances

Shuttle service will be offered to and from the dances from 5:30pm–2:30am. Shuttle service from the Sheraton to the Park Plaza Castle will end at 1:00am. We are providing this service for your convenience and security. If you do not wish to take the shuttles, you may walk to the Castle, or take the subway or a taxi cab. There will be at least one shuttle that is handicap accessible. MBTA service to the Castle is available via the Arlington Street station on the Green Line. The Park Plaza is two blocks away from the Arlington Street T stop.

More information on this year’s dances can be found at www.animeboston.com/news/ article/407.

Informal Dance (18+) Saturday, May 25, 9:30pm–2:00am A full weekend pass and wristband will be required to attend the informal dance. Wristbands can be picked up in Registration on Saturday, May 25 at 3:30 p.m. Attendees may begin lining up 30 minutes prior. You must have your weekend badge and photo ID at time of pick-up. All attendees wishing to attend the informal dance must: 1. Be at least 18 years of age with a government issued photo ID. 2. Have a weekend badge to Anime Boston 2013. One-day badges will not be accepted. 3. Have a wristband for the informal dance. It must be worn at all times during the dance. Both badges and wristbands will be checked at the shuttle bus and at the entrance of the dance.

EVENTS The Dance Policy will be strictly enforced (see page 71). Anime Boston has the right to remove any attendee from the event.

Security at the Informal Dance

In addition to Anime Boston Security Staff, Boston Park Plaza staff and the Boston Police Department will be on site. Depending on the situation, Anime Boston may defer security issues to Boston Police. An EMT detail will be on site for any medical emergencies.

Due to our new heightened security policy, this year we have a no-bag/personal item policy. Please leave your bags, purses, or Minimoose plushies in your hotel room, car or at your hotel's baggage check. This policy will ensure a safe and hassle free event for everyone attending. These changes aside, we are happy to welcome Greg Ayres back as Anime Boston's Informal Dance manager! Expect nothing less than Greg's amazing energy, showmanship and versatile track selection! To help you have a great time at the Informal Dance please keep these tips in mind: • Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. You can still dress to impress, but keeping things comfortable will allow you to show people your moves on the dance floor for longer periods of time. • Stay hydrated. We will have as many water stations set up at the dance as possible. • Do not overexert yourself. It can be easy to get so carried away dancing out all of your energy that you faint. We would prefer you to leave on your own two legs instead of being carried out by the paramedics and we hope you see it that way too. • If you plan to dance near the speakers, wear ear-plugs. The sound system is really BIG and will be really LOUD. You can get ear plugs at a pharmacy, several of which are close to the convention center.

20

Anime Boston 2013

• And most importantly, stay safe and help others stay safe. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Your actions represent Anime Boston and everyone would be be pretty bummed if the actions of a few individuals caused the rest of us not to have as much fun as we could.

The Spirit Charity Ball Saturday, May 25, 6:00pm–9:00pm Feel the need to unwind after an event filled day at Anime Boston? Then why not spend the evening dressed to the nines swaying to your anime and video game favorites! Come join us for a sophisticated evening of elegance and atmosphere at Anime Boston's Spirit Charity Ball. The Spirit Ball is open to Anime Boston attendees of all ages. A weekend pass is NOT required to attend the Spirit Ball — you only need your attendee badge and a ticket. Ticketing The Spirit Charity Ball will be a limited capacity and ticketed event. Anyone who wishes to attend will need to sign up for a ticket beforehand. Tickets will cost $4, and all proceeds will go to the Central New England chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The ticket charge is designed to continue Anime Boston's commitment to charity. Half of the tickets were available online, and the remainder will be made available at the convention. These tickets will go on sale the afternoon of Saturday, May 25th, exact time to be determined -- check Con Chowdah for details. Attendees will only be allowed to line up a maximum of 30 minutes before ticketing opens. Each person in line will only be able to request one ticket, and must present their Anime Boston badge. Note: All those with tickets need to wear proper attire to the Ball, those with tickets but without formal clothing will be denied admittance.

Dance Lessons Feel a little shy on the dance floor? A beginner's ballroom dance class is planned earlier that day for those of you who would like to learn a few moves, meet potential dance partners, or just brush up on your technique. Check the schedule for times and location. Dress Code Our Charity Ball, unlike its other dance counterparts, is a formal event. The dress code is Black Tie "invited". This means that attendees are encouraged to wear gowns and tuxedos, although semi-formal attire is acceptable. Cosplay is welcome, but must fit in with the formality of the occasion. Whether you decide to come as Princess Serenity or in your best kimono, you must dress in a manner befitting the occasion. Although ball gowns and tuxedos are encouraged, a minimum of semi-formal attire is strictly enforced. Informal clothing such as T-shirts, jeans, sandals, sneakers, flip-flops, boots, platforms, flannel, etc. will not be permitted. Anime Boston staff, at their own discretion, reserve the right to refuse admittance to attendees deemed inappropriately dressed. Formal Western Attire (Female) Those dressing in female formal wear (regardless of his/her own gender) should wear at least semi-formal level dresses and appropriate dress shoes such as heels or dress flats. Sneakers, boots, or sandals will not be allowed. Dress hems should be at least knee length and individuals should avoid non-formal fabrics such as denim, leather and vinyl. While cotton is allowed, more formal fabrics such as satin or chiffon are encouraged. Those who do not wish to wear a dress may come dressed in a woman's pant suit. Formal Western Attire (Male) Those wearing male attire (regardless of his/her own gender) should be neatly dressed in at minimum a button down shirt, slacks, dark colored jacket or blazer and

EVENTS tie. Suits and tuxedos are encouraged. Individuals should wear formal shoes such as dress shoes or loafers. Sneakers, boots or platforms shoes will not be allowed. Formal Eastern Attire Those wearing formal attire from Japan or other eastern countries should be clothed neatly and in full attire. For male clothing this means the full Haori-Hakama, for female clothing a formal Kimono such as the Furisode or Kurotomesode. Those dressed in formal Japanese clothing may wear zori sandals with tabi socks for footwear. Geta sandals are difficult to dance in and thus not recommended. All other forms of sandals are not suitable for this event. Formal Cosplay Attire Cosplayers are certainly welcome at the ball! However we ask you to please remember that it is a formal dance event first and foremost, and the dress code must still be adhered to. Cosplay for men and women should resemble formal wear of the noncostume variety. For example: long gowns, formal military attire, etc. School uniforms, armor, chains, and excessive belts are all considered informal. Large props, wings, weapons, or anything that impairs your field of vision will not be allowed in the event as they are an impediment on the dance floor and may be broken or harm others. Anime Boston staff reserves the right to ask for the removal of costume portions or props that are problematic. For more information on the dress code, please check out www.animeboston.com/ events/dress_code. For inspiration on formalizing your cosplay, please check out www.animeboston.com/ events/formal_dance_guide.

swap meet Is there something you bought which only caused you to realize you would rather have something else? Is an extra copy of a book or a video floating around your home because you didn’t remember that you already had it in your collection? Are you certain there is someone that could benefit from owning your VHS copy of Odin more than you? If you can answer “yes” to any of these questions—ESPECIALLY the one about Odin—or even if you cannot answer “yes,” but are just really lonely, the Swap Meet may be the place for you.

MAY 24–26, 2013

25

EVENTS There are a few rules to the Anime Boston Swap Meet, but they are not too hard to remember: 1. NO BOOTLEGS. If you have ever ended up with something you didn’t realize wasn’t legit, you’ve probably felt ripped off. Crummy “all region” HK DVD sets, soundtracks with lousy color photocopied liners, offcolor wall scrolls, repro trading cards, and the list goes on. If you’ve felt ripped off by this stuff, do your fellow convention attendees a favor and don’t pass this stuff on to them. If you’ve got any questions about the authenticity of something, find a staff member and ask for help. 2. NO WEAPONS. No matter what the material, if it resembles a weapon, please do not bring it to trade. This includes wooden practice swords and things that might otherwise be called “cosplay accessories.” This is not negotiable! 3. NO FOOD OR DRINKS FOR TRADE. This might seem odd, but don’t bring any food or drinks to trade to people unless you manufacture and package the food or drinks and wrap them individually in specifically marked trial-size packages for promotional use and not for resale. You don’t want to find yourself on the wrong side of the convention center’s catering contract. 4. ADULT MATERIALS MUST BE COVERED AND ONLY SHOWN TO PEOPLE WHO CAN LEGALLY VIEW THEM. If your favorite naughty video has served its purpose and you’d like to find it a new home, make completely sure someone that’s interested in it is at least 18 years of age. That’s the law and it should probably be common sense by now. You’ll probably have the most fun by trading things, but you can also show up just to look around at what other people have to trade. Come and see what’s going on in the Swap Meet. Check the most recent convention schedule for the time and location of the Swap Meet.

ARTISTS’ ALLEY Welcome back to another year of the Artists’ Alley! If you have some free time, are just browsing, or are even looking for someone or something in particular, this is the place to go for original artwork and fan art! The artists are friendly and the variety is incredible! This year’s Alley has moved to Hall C on the 2nd Floor of the Hynes, enabling us to offer wider aisles that should afford everyone the opportunity to browse in an easier and safer manner. The Art Show has also moved with us and can be found to the right of our entrance. We have continued our tradition of having Featured Artists, all of whom will be doing various panels throughout the weekend, so please check them out. If you have any questions or trouble, the Artists’ Alley staff can be found at the Info Desk straight across from the entrance to Hall C. The Staff includes: Artists’ Alley Manager Nikki O’Shea, as well as the Art Track Coordinator Kathy Lawton. Other staffers include: Gabriel Fequiere, Jr., Alec Cardin, Katherine Fahey and Gustavo Berrios.

rules for the attendees These are common sense rules, but every now and then it is good to have a refresher. Please take the time to read. Food and Drink

No open food or drink is allowed in the Alley except by the artists (or staff). Visitors are not allowed to eat in the Artists’ Alley.

Empty Tables

You will not feel free to sit down, sit behind, take chairs, put your stuff on, start eating on, or do anything that would otherwise tie up what may appear to be an empty table. You did not pay for the table, and when the artist who paid for the table does show up, he/she has the right to assume it will be clean and immediately available. If you want to sell art and do not have table space in the Alley, you will not set up on the floor or in the hall – this is a traffic hazard. Check with Artists’ Alley staff if you

want space; some space may be available. The Artists Alley info desk will be straight across from the entrance to the Alley.

Do not block tables. If you are looking at art on table A, it is not fair to block off table B from people who might wish to look at their display.

Photography

Do not place your bags on the tables. Every inch is often used for display and doing so will discourage others from looking.

Do not stop to take pictures of cosplayers (exception – the cosplayer is an artist and you’ve asked permission) in the Alley. This will cause any number of traffic jams; please ask to take the photo outside the Alley. No video taping any artists’ displays and/or art without permission . Above all else, no photographing the art – either by regular camera, digital camera, handheld game cameras (such as the DSI), or your phone camera. This is considered stealing even if it is for personal use. If you like something, please consider buying it. Some of these folks are trying to make a living.

Traffic

Do not congregate in the doorways. Come in, step aside, and let traffic go through.

Do not block the aisles. If you are just standing and talking, please find another place to do so.

The Artists

Feel free to “bother” the artists, that is why they are here. But do not hassle or harass them.

Please be respectful to the artists at all times. If you have a problem or issue, please don’t cause a scene; instead, report it to the Artists Alley Info Desk. Please listen to the staff. All other Anime Boston convention rules apply. (See the Convention Policies section on page 69.)

Enjoy yourselves and have a good time at the con!

studionasu.com paradox-lost.com facebook.com/studionasu twitter.com/studionasu crisisheartbrawlers.com

Table 83 Alan Evans is the creator and artist of the #1 wrestling webcomic, Rival Angels. Rival Angels began in 2007 and has become a hit with critics, fans and professionals having been nominated for such awards as Best Comic, Best Long Form and Best Character. In addition, Alan Evans has done spot illustration work for several wrestling companies and flatting work for The Dreamer, DC, Hi-Fi Color Design, Digital Webbing and many other independent studios. He loves drawing backgrounds, likes riding his bike and is also a fan of characters with the name, “Alan.” Visit Alan online to check out his latest work, including Rival Angels at RivalAngels.com.

Table 84 Some say that Dave Lister is made of Legos. This is false. Composed mostly of coffee, Dave has learned to work without unnecessary things like sleep (though this may also be speculation, as he is often observed face-down on his laptop). Dave got his roots in the industry by accidentally creating the webcomic, Paradox Lost in early 2000. Though it was intended simply to be a means for Dave to polish his art and writing skills, its success led to the founding of Studio Nasu. Since then, Dave has written, illustrated, voice acted, and composed music for comics, magazines, retailers, video games, children's books, websites, radio stations, and one very small, mechanical narwhal (which may have resulted in saving the world from destruction at the hands of zombie guppies.) Keep up to date with the latest games, animations, comics and other projects currently in the works at www.studionasu. com, including the recent successful Kickstarter campaign to fund and develop Crisis Heart Brawlers: Clash at Otakon! (The first official anime con video game!)

Now he's planning to spend the next galactic year as the writer for the sci-fi superhero space adventure, "Star Power!" Alongside the extremely talented Garth Graham, he hopes to make superpowers fun again, and wants to showcase the wonder and beauty of the cosmos. art show The Art Show is a showcase for artists to display their work to the Anime Boston community. It is conveniently located next to the Artists’ Alley, in Hall C on the Hynes 2nd Floor.

Danny Valentini draconia.katbox.net

Table 72 First cooked up in 1999 and served up in webcomic form since 2005, The Draconia Chronicles combines epic fantasy, heavy drama, fierce action, and the occasional laugh, wrapped up in a sexy anthropomorphic package with just a twist of manga flavoring. Locked into what appears to be a stalemate, races of Dragons and Tigers fight each other in a centuries-old war with a long-forgotten cause, all while trying to keep order within their own respective camps. Danny Valentini, known online by his nom de plume “RazorFox,” is a mostly self-taught cartoonist. Starting off as a writer in 1994, his repeated efforts to find artists to illustrate his comics were largely in vain. Thus, out of frustration, on a spring night in 1995, he picked up a pencil and decided to see what he could do himself. Today, he writes and illustrates The Draconia Chronicles, and while this takes up the bulk of his time, he occasionally dabbles in other side projects. Throughout the years, RazorFox’s work has been published by such companies as White Lightning Productions, Antarctic Press, Shanda Fantasy Arts, and Angry Viking Press. The Draconia Chronicles appears in weekly installments at draconia.katbox.net.

TIPPING GUIDE In the United States it is customary to tip when receiving services. For many, tips are a large part of their income and for those employed in restaunts and hotels, their wages are lower due to the tipping system.

Bars

Tip your bartender $1-$2 per drink that you get. If you are ordering a lot of drinks at once, the standard restaurant tipping system should be used.

Room Service

Room service usually has a gratuity included in the charge, check the receipt again carefully for this, if there is none, follow the guidelines of a restaurant you may want to include a little extra if a delivery charge is not charged as well.

Housekeeping

You as the consumer have the power to decide how much they earn based on the service provided. If you feel they did very well, you would tip them as much as you would like to. However, if they provided poor service, you have the option to tip less. With this in mind, the service industry workers have an incentive to provide the best service they can.

Housekeepers work hard to make sure your beds are remade, the garbage is taken out, and the towels are re-hung or refreshed if you have asked them to be. A tip of usually $1-$5 per night, up to $10 a night, depending on the mess that was left when you checkout is appropriate. Tips should be left in an envelope marked for the housekeeper of room (including the room #) or given at the front desk.

Compiled here is a general guide that will help with the different situations you may come upon along with the averages amount tipped for the service.

Concierge

Doormen

Doormen usually receive $1-$2 for getting you a taxi, and opening the door for you. If you are just arriving with baggage which he or she is helping you to retrieve out of the car, then the doorman generally receives $.50-$1 per bag for that service.

Bellmen

If the concierge helps you to book a reservation at restaurant that was hard to get, $5-$10 is nice expression of gratitude for his or her connections or persistence that got the reservation.

Front Desk Generally no tip is given for checking in as none is expected; however, if you request something special, i.e. you had a Queen bedroom reserved and they were able to get you into a 2 Double room even though they are out of them or a complementary upgrade, giving them a $5-$10 tip is a nice gesture but not necessary.

When luggage is stored, people generally do not tip. However when you go to retrieve your bags, it is customary to tip $1-$2 per bag generally no more than $10. So if the poor bellman is asked to retrieve 3 bags for you and you give him $1 that’s usually frowned upon. Giving $2 is better if you are really strapped for cash.

Maintenance

Restaurants

Request for items

Maintenance generally does not receive anything for fixing a broken light bulb or fixing anything in the room.

If you place a request for items, i.e. pillows, an iron, a fridge, a Every time you dine at a restaurant, you want to tip the server rollaway bed, etc., the general guide is $1-$2 for small items or 15%-20% of your final bill. If service was horrible, you can tip lower. $3-$5 for larger items. Do look on your bill as some restaurants may include a “Gratuity” charge already, especially if you are having a “set” meal, or have a certain number of people. If there is a gratuity charge, no additional Taxis tip is necessary, unless you would like to give more. Taxi drivers are usually tipped 10%-20% of your total fare.

It is also a tradition here in Volunteers that we give prizes to those who went above and beyond the call of duty as a volunteer. How these prizes are won are kept secret and are only revealed during the convention.

So, Are You Ready? Additional information will be available during our orientation meetings and anytime at the VHQ during the convention. If you’re ready to take your first step and climb aboard, visit our VHQ at the con! Good luck!

For more information on volunteering, check out www.animeboston.com/staff/ volunteers/, or visit the Volunteer Headquarters on the Hynes 1st Floor in Room 110.

Event/Random Meetings: The exact times of these are pretty last minute and are announced and posted in the VHQ during the convention. Please keep your ears and eyes open for such meeting announcements while volunteering.
