Katrina’s Kritters Welcomed with Open Arms If you’ve been paying attention to the local news, then no doubt you’ve heard about H.O.P.E.’s extraordinary efforts to help ease the burden of overwhelmed shelters in the south and find homes for hundreds of animals who were lost, abandoned, surrendered or perhaps never had a home in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Local and national media attention was incredible! It was (is) no small feat and the community really came through to help achieve this goal. It took great amounts of coordination, phone calls, emails, time, sweat, gas, supplies, money, and more than anything – compassion. This issue of Critter Quarterly is a little different this time around, mostly because we’ve been too busy! We’ve even had to cancel our annual fundraiser, Paw Prints, because it’s just too much to handle at this time. But we do want you to pay special attention to the list of all those who chipped in to help us bring all these critters to Wisconsin. We are so grateful to those who have donated what they can for the sake of the animals – their time, their surplus, their money. We ask that you take the time to read through the list of those businesses who contributed items and money and let them know that you appreciate their involvement with H.O.P.E.’s effort. We couldn’t have done it without them – or you.

Thank you so much!!

All photos of critters in their kennels are just a few of the many Katrina’s Kritters who have been rescued.

Katrina Tales Of course, whenever there is a rescue effort of this nature, there are going to be stories, and I’m sure there will be more. Here are just a few sweet and funny tales from some of the hard working people involved in the process:

From Jo Labre: When we were scrambling to find a way to transport animals, I searched online and found a cattle hauler in Missouri. After talking to him, he was willing to meet us in St. Louis to load empty cages, drive to Louisiana to pick up critters and deliver them to Wisconsin. He just needed us to cover the cost of his fuel. As you know, we used a fleet of vehicles from here, instead. Jon Eeg e-mailed the trucker thanking him for his offer, but we did not need his services at this time. I went one step further and UPS’d two O&H Kringles to him with a note thanking him again. When I didn’t hear from him after a couple of days, I called him to ask if he had received the package. “Was it a white box?” he asked. Yes it was. “Well, that explains it,” he said. The UPS man had tied it to the gate at the end of the driveway and either his horse or his four dogs got it. He had wondered if his wife had fed the dogs cake, because it was strewn all across the front yard, and one dog had frosting smeared on his face. He did thank me kindly for the thought, though!

From Samantha: We received a dog this week that came with a story. I got a call from a volunteer in Louisiana that said she is bringing up a special dog. When we got him, his collar had a note. “If you get this dog please call, do not euthanize” When I received this, I called them. No answer. Later that evening I received a strange call. It was the rescuers that found this beautiful dog (Bubba). This man was from California. He and his wife were in New Orleans helping with the search and rescue. As much as they loved him, they could not keep Bubba. Bubba is now in our care and is a wonderful dog.

Weber of the Walkers ~ Joe Swanson You, the most calm, thoughtful of your breed: Comforted those who knew you, Helped those who would come to know you. You, with perfect conformation: Showed us how a Labrador Retriever should appear; Helped us to understand the perfection of your breed: honor and consistency. You, with careful consideration for young and old: Played out the concept of friendship and amplified the notion of signal love; Helped your family, with consistent commitment, With the theme of constant love You, Weber, brought love – most magnetically – to all that knew you. We shall miss you forever. for your time with us was nearly perfect.

Hello,

Hello HOPE,

I just deposited $357.00 in your Paypal account. It was your share of the proceeds from the wine dinner at The Grotto on Main Street. Sorry it is a bit late, and I wish it was more. We would like to support you in the future as well. We are animal lovers and live with two Boxers (Buster and Rip) and two cats (Max and Pepper). I am curious about the new facility you mention on the web site. Do you have a location?

Just a quick note to let you know the boys are well. Nicky is lovely as ever, and Sterling is pure joy. Thank you again for bringing them into my life. ~ the Schadwill Family

Thank you, Scott Sebastian The Yellow Rose • The Grotto • Sebastian’s

Hi there, “Faris” (Now called Meneheune) is the sweetest, most delightful cat and we adore her. She is such a sweetie and I can’t believe she was in the shelter for a year! She is such a delight and thank you so much for rescuing her and caring for her until we came along. ~ Caroline Roe and Robert Fertig

If you thought we had needs before... ∗ For Cats: Fromm dry cat food, any canned food, clay litter, toys

I am sorry I failed to forward this to you. Greta, now known as Lilly, is doing well. She is healthy, happy and very pampered. She has her own chaise lounge, blanket and has become official “Boss” of the house. Our Doberman mix, Delaney, has been diagnosed with an inoperable stomach tumor, and Lilly has been a Godsend for her. They play together like young lions and rest together as if they are mother and daughter. Thank you for your help and cooperation in allowing her to become a member of our family. ~Jeanne Parsons
