Lights of Love

Honor a Loved One and Light Up the Holidays! This holiday season brings with it the opportunity to honor a loved one through the PCH Foundation’s annual Lights of Love campaign. With your donation, you dedicate a symbolic light on the Lights of Love tree located in the lobby of Princeton Community Hospital’s Parkview Center. Names of those being honored and remembered will be listed on recognition display boards in the hospital’s main entrance and Parkview Center lobbies. For a printable PDF gift donation form, please visit our website at www.pchonline.org. You may also request a copy of the donation form by calling 304-487-7242 or by emailing [email protected]. Lights of Love displays containing copies of the form are also located in both hospital lobbies. A Lights of Love dedication ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, December 14 at 3:00 p.m. in the lobby of Princeton Community Hospital’s Parkview Center where the tree will be lit in honor of loved ones being recognized. Musical entertainment will be provided and refreshments will be served at a reception following the ceremony. Thank you for your gift of love and light at this special time of year!

Saturday, October 11 – Runners and walkers braved cold temperatures and heavy rain as they made their way to Glenwood Park for the first annual Diva Fever 5K Walk/Run. To the delight of participants, the rain stopped just before the start of the race. Lead by Jessica Pennington, PCH IT Department, the Diva Fever 5K Walk/Run was created to raise breast cancer awareness during the month of October. Seventy-three participants pre-registered with an additional 36 signing up on the day of the race. The 109 runners and walkers ranging in age from 7 to 90, collected a total of $2,300 that was donated to the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program. Pennington said, “My goal is to build this 5K into a yearly community event. I would like to see our local community join together every year to help the fight against breast cancer.”

Speaking to the crowd prior to the race, Dr. David A. Mullins, Cancer Liaison Physician, Commission on Cancer, American College of Surgeons, and Chairman of the Breast Center at PCH, described the innovative work being done at the hospital to provide the highest level of quality breast care for the women in southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia. PCH is Pleased to Announce that Donna S. Shay, MS, CCC-SLP, Speech Language Pathologist, is Now a Hospital Employee Since 1985, Donna Shay - as a contract employee through Blue Ridge Hearing and Balance Clinic - has provided diagnostic, remediation (therapy), and counseling services to inpatients and outpatients at PCH, as well as performed modified barium swallow studies for patients with swallowing difficulties. In mid-October, she became a hospital employee with an office in the Occupational Therapy/Pulmonary Rehabilitation Department. Donna grew up in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from West Virginia University with a Bachelor's Degree in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology and a Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology. She is a certified Speech Language Pathologist with the American Speech Language Hearing Association and is licensed in Speech Language Pathology through the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. After graduation from WVU, Donna worked briefly at Bluefield Regional Medical Center before joining Blue Ridge Hearing and Balance Clinic where she served as the Speech Language Pathologist/Supervisor. In addition to seeing patients within the private clinic setting and at Princeton Community Hospital, she also provided services for Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center, Early Intervention, and ResCare. Donna has been an adjunct professor with numerous graduate schools including West Virginia University, Marshal University, Radford University, etc., serving as a clinical supervisor for Speech Pathology graduate students.

Over the years Donna has seen patients at PCH ranging in age from newborn to 108 years who have suffered from dysphagia, (swallowing disorders) and/or communication deficits. She also addresses receptive and expressive language disorders, articulation problems, voice disorders, stuttering, and communication deficits secondary to a hearing loss. Donna stated, “I am a firm believer in a holistic approach when providing therapy services for patients. Good rapport with the patient's physicians is very important. Many patients seen for speech therapy are often in need of Physical Therapy and/or Occupational Therapy also. The registered dietitians help when determining the most appropriate means of nutrition for those patients with swallowing disorders. Working together as a team to help rehabilitate these patients can greatly enhance their recovery. I look forward to expanding the inpatient and outpatient Speech Therapy services and joining Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy in providing Princeton Community Hospital more comprehensive therapy services.” Director of Occupational Therapy/Pulmonary Rehab, Kimberly Keen said, “We are extremely excited to welcome Donna Shay to the department. Her skills as a Speech Language Pathologist will dovetail beautifully with the services and therapies currently offered by our department. It makes perfect sense that her office is located here. Since inpatients and outpatients often require both speech and occupational therapy, they will benefit greatly from the convenience of one location. With Donna's new position,
