Skill Development Guidelines • Model the Target Skill – Provide an opportunity for the athletes to see the skill at full speed – Ask “key” questions to get athletes to focus on model

• Allow the Athletes to Do the Skill – Provide an opportunity for the athletes to mimic the skill in a controlled situation where they can focus on the single skill

• Provide Feedback on Skill Performance – Free yourself from the drill to move around and provide feedback – If some or all of the athletes are missing on a “key”, bring them back to the model – Feedback should be instant and specific – Rather than focusing on what someone is not doing, focus on what someone is doing to provide an example

• Add Movement to the Skill Drill • Introduce a Combination Skill Drill – The best setting drill, is a pass-set drill

Skill Training Basics Passing • Key Words/Questions – Ready (Are feet apart? Are arms close to body or away? Are knees bent? Are shoulders over knees?) – Feet to Ball – Platform (Are thumbs together? Are elbows straight? Where does ball contact platform?) – Platform to Target, Freeze to Target (Where do hands end up after pass?)
