Emily's Wedding Quilt

Pieced from as many reproduction prints she could gather at a fabric exchange, Liz’s quilt features a masterful combination of two different blocks: 54-40 or Fight and Shoo Fly. Read page 6 to find out how you can organize a similar fabric exchange—quilt results may vary! Size: 115" × 115" Blocks: 121 (9") blocks

Cutting Bee Fabric Exchange by Marcie Wendrock Recently, four Texas quilters took part in a Cutting Bee Fabric Exchange with 1930’s reproduction fabrics. Each of us had some 1930’s reproduction prints but not enough variety to make a very interesting scrap quilt. We pooled our fabrics and found we had about 80 different prints. Before the exchange, we chose a quilt design. We then informed the group of all the details for the cutting bee and the basic layout and design of the quilt. As we prepared for our bee, we considered the tools that would make cutting and assembling block components easier. We used Tri-Recs™ for the Peaky and Spike units and the Fons & Porter Half & Quarter Ruler for the half-square triangles so we could cut all the pieces for our blocks from just two strip sizes. Since none of us had white solid on hand, we decided to order this fabric in bulk to save money. We printed out cutting instructions, block piecing diagrams, and a diagram of the basic quilt. We picked a date, chose a location, and planned the actual Cutting Bee Fabric Exchange. We asked each person to bring 20 fat quarters of 1930s reproduction prints in a variety of colors and patterns. We also told them they would need a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat, some quart-sized plastic bags to hold cut pieces, a Tri Recs™ ruler set, a Fons & Porter Half & Quarter ruler, and food for the potluck lunch. We began our day sorting our fabrics so we had a nice balance of color and print designs. One person

This is the finished quilt design Cynthia Regone used for her blocks. Instructions are available on our Web site at www.FonsandPorter.com/weddingalternate. pressed the fat quarters, two cut strips and pieces, and one organized the cut pieces and bagged and labeled them to make a quilt kit for each of us. We found our assembly line process worked great and we got our prints cut and organized so quickly, we had time to cut some of our white fabric pieces as well. We scheduled sewing bees every few months to keep everyone motivated and excited about our quilts. Each of us varied our quilt in size, designed our borders, sewed

our blocks, and assembled our quilt at our own pace. We enjoy seeing how different our quilts are, even though we all started with the same basic kit.

These triangle units were nicknamed “Peaky and Spike” by quilter Doreen Speckmann, who used these units extensively in her quilts. The larger, central triangle is “Spike,” and the two smaller, side triangles are “Peaky.” Follow our instructions for using the Tri-Recs™ tools to make cutting and piecing these units a snap.

Cutting “Peaky and Spike” Triangles 1. Begin by cutting 1 fabric strip

from each of the colors you wish to combine in a “Peaky and Spike” unit. To determine the strip size, add 1⁄2" to the desired finished size of the unit. For example, for a 3" finished unit, cut strips 31⁄2" wide. 2. Working with the strip for the center “Spike” triangle, position the Tri tool atop the strip, aligning the mark corresponding to your strip width along bottom edge of strip. Cut along both angled sides of Tri tool (Photo A). 3. Reposition Tri tool with strip width line along top edge of strip and side along previously cut edge. Cut another “Spike” triangle (Photo B). Continue in this manner to cut desired number of “Spike” triangles.

7

4. For the side “Peaky” triangles,

fold the strip in half with right sides together so you will be cutting two mirror image pieces at one time. Position the Recs tool atop the strip, aligning the mark corresponding to your strip width along bottom edge of strip. Cut on both sides of Recs tool to

cut 2 “Peaky” triangles—1 right and 1 left (Photo C). 5. Reposition Recs tool with strip width line along top edge of strip. Cut 2 more side “Peaky” triangles (Photo D). Continue in this manner to cut desired number of pairs of “Peaky” triangles.

6. As you cut “Peaky” triangles,

be sure to trim along the short angled line at the top of the Recs tool. This angled cut makes it easier to align pieces for sewing (Photo E).

Assembling “Peaky and Spike” Units 1. Position right “Peaky” triangle

along right side of “Spike” triangle, making sure the angle aligns with the side of the “Spike” triangle. Join pieces (Photo F).
