Walford Mill Crafts has been recognised by the Arts Council of England as a National Portfolio Organisation delivering quality exhibitions, workshops and contemporary craft work in the gallery shop as well as three onsite makers demonstrating their skills. We present a noteworthy exhibition about Mending, during September/October entitled ‘The Journey’ with specially commissioned contemporary craftwork that reflects fresh ideas about mending and recycling, and develops the work of five makers. The processes involved raise the profile of several museum collections promoting a partnership between Museums and Crafts. This exhibition has been co-curated with Jacy Wall and is available to tour. Don’t forget to join us for the open-air theatre and for our Celebration of Italy over August Bank Holiday. Bookings are now being taken for all our varied children’s summer holiday classes. We hope you enjoy your visit to our gallery shop and onsite Millstream Bistro and we look forward to welcoming you again soon!

The Journey; Exploring the Nature of Mending ‘The Journey: Exploring the Nature of Mending’ is a new contemporary craft project that explores the layers of meaning, cultural and emotional, that are evoked by mending, repair and re-use. Highlighting and celebrating the mending to be found in museum collections is also an important part of the project. ( Co - curated with Jacy Wall.)

Resident Makers Kathryn Arbon Jeweller Kathryn has been designing and making jewellery for nearly twenty years. Returning to the Gatehouse Studio five years ago. She enjoys exploring techniques and is currently working on collections in 18ct vermeil, incorporating precious stones cut in their natural crystal form. This collection is influenced by her interest in gemology. Other collections in sterling silver and anodised aluminum are inspired by natural forms. Commissions are welcome using recycled gold and gemstones to create new pieces to cherish and adore.

8

Debby Kirby Silk Weaver Debby weaves luxurious lengths of silk on her Harris Countermach loom to create fine silk scarves and a variety of interior accents. Debby is involved in the entire process of preparing the silk for her loom, and each silk warp used is carefully hand-dyed to ensure that no two pieces are the same. Visit Debby in her atmospheric studio at Walford Mill Crafts where you can engage with her whilst she works and learn more about the creative process. Pieces for sale in Debby’s studio include a collection of silk scarves, purses, cushions and wall hangings

What is Walford Mill Crafts? Walford Mill Crafts is a charitable trust, now operating for 28 years with two main aims: firstly, to educate, inspire and engage visitors and the local community about contemporary crafts and secondly it supports local, national and emerging craft makers and students through selling, teaching and exhibition opportunities. Walford Mill Crafts work together with many other organisations to develop beneficial and attractive programmes that support these aims.

to all visitors, as well as a longer term project to rebuild the gallery, learning areas and Bistro, and also to re-establish the natural surroundings, providing improved habitats for otters, water voles and bats, amongst other local wildlife.

The home of Walford Mill Crafts is a Grade II listed mill in a beautiful riverside setting within walking distance of Wimborne town centre, and is a key tourist attraction for the area. The next few years will hopefully see some developments, with the building of a new entrance bridge to provide safer and better accessibility 18
