n West Sumatera or popularly called Minangkabau, the most popular woven Songket comes from Pandai Sikek. When people talk about Padai Sikek, they usually refer to the woven Songket. It is not known when the making of Songket began and developed in Minagkabau. However, the art and skill of weaving must have been brought into the country by the people’s ancestors, the Austronesian people or also called: Malayo-Polynesian from their original homeland, at the time when a large scale migration of people occurred from the Asian midland toward the south and east thousands of years ago. They brought with them all their skills for their new life in the new land, such as agriculture technique, the skill of making agricultural tools, weapons, and so on. In line with human skill and spirit development, they had been able to develop their basic skill into making craft products, and later on to make products of art as we have witnessed nowadays. The best woven Songket is made from silk with golden yarns. Golden color is a favorite color to be used in making Songket. A piece of Songket could take one month or more to make. Therefore, the price of best Songket is a little expensive. The expensive Songket is usually wearing by Malayan royal families in North Sumatera, Riau, Jambi, Palembang, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Bali. The royal families in Malaysia and Brunei also use Songket as the royal dress. Now, the best woven Songkets have become collection of several Museums in the Netherlands and California. Many noted people in diferent countries have also keep Songkets as private collection. Beside in Minangkabau, good quality woven Songket also produced in Palembang (South Sumatera), Jambi, Riau, North Sumatera, West, South and East Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, Bali, and Lombok. In addition to Songket, there are several kinds of woven cloths produced in Java, Bali and other regions. The main diferences are, among other things, the yarn material being used and method of preparing the yarn. The most popular one is Ikat. Woven ikat are used for making dress and accessories. Other woven cloths of less renowned are called Jumputan and Tapis. In West and Central Java, also in Bali, most woven cloths are used as sarong.
