Whole Education

Regional Conference Wednesday 6th March One Drummond Gate, London

Journeys to Outstanding

“ The journey from great to excellent systems focuses on creating an environment that will unleash the creativity and innovation of its educators.” (McKinsey, 2010 ) Welcome Being bold, demonstrating what works and showing that more innovative approaches don’t just develop wider skills, but also deliver in conventional ways too, is surely the best way forward. Whole Education offers a call to action and an environment which aims to give schools the confidence to do something different in the knowledge that they are not alone. Today’s conference will enable you to hear about the radical and inspiring journey of schools that have become Outstanding because they overcame the ‘fear factor’ and understood that doing more of the same was not the answer. In order to become truly outstanding, they argue that schools need to have the confidence to do more than just respond to Ofsted criteria and league table requirements.

We hope today’s event will provide you with the knowledge, inspiration and confidence to begin, or build further on, your own school’s journey. In addition, you will hear from a wealth of schools leading the way in their provision of a whole education, drawing on the expertise of Whole Education’s Partner organisations.

The sessions | Introduction and close

Opening panel session + Journeys to Outstanding 9.05, Flourish 1 and 2

Courtyard

Summary This session begins with an input from Baroness Estelle Morris who will present a recipe for schools to achieve long term success. She will reflect on how success can be realised through focusing on learning, meeting the needs of students and making the most of teachers through informed professionalism, engaging with pedagogy and effective collaboration. The session progresses to interviews, firstly with Primary School Head Carl Jarvis who took his school from Special Measures to Outstanding in two years with the same staff and the same students through a radical approach to learning that really engaged his students. We will explore with Carl what gave him the courage and determination to embark on this extraordinary journey. The second interview will take place with Deputy Head Chris Holmwood - who leads his teaching school alliance - and two of his students. In this case study the school was already Outstanding but had a grade 2 for teaching and learning. Instead of just

He led the highly praised national RATL programme which developed an innovative and distinctive approach to raising achievement and involved over 700 schools between 2004 and 2008 that was described by Professor Andrew Hargreaves as, “One of the most distinctive, promising and successful reform models to emerge in the recent history of educational change and school improvement”. He was also strategic advisor for the pilot of the development of the National College Middle Leadership Development Programme between 2009 and 2010. David is now Executive Director of the Whole Education Network. Chris Holmwood Chris is Principal of the Leadership and Training Centre at Shenley Brook End School where he is Senior Deputy Headteacher.
