The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

November 9, 2014

The Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends, May the Lord give you peace! We celebrate a rather interesting feast today—the feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran Church in Rome. So first a little history. Today we go back to Rome, to Rome under the reign of the Emperor Constantine. On November 9, 324 A.D. Pope St. Sylvester consecrated the first public Christian church in the ancient City of Rome. It was built on property given to the Church by Constantine and then converted into a Christian church and given the name “The Church of Saint Savior.” Centuries later, in the eleventh century, its name was changed and it became known as the Basilica of St. John Lateran. It is not only the first Christian Church in Rome, it is also the Cathedral of the Bishop of Rome—also known as the pope. St. Peter’s Basilica is the center of worldwide Catholicism but The Lateran is the center of the Diocese of Rome. Certainly, St. John Lateran is an important church, but in some ways it is every church. It is every church because like even this small, humble chapel, it is the outward sign of our unity. What happens here today is exactly what is happening at St. John Lateran. In the gospel Jesus reminds us that the temple is a sacred place and must be treated as such. On this feast we are reminded that all places of prayer, no matter how grand and important or how small and humble, are sacred places. They are sacred because two inseparable actions take place in them; first we worship God and, secondly, we stay united to one another and the universal church. These places are sacred because, like the temple, they are built of living stones. These places contain a wondrous history. The preaching of the gospel in all churches from St. John Lateran to St. Mary’s has contributed to who we are as the temple of God. Next Saturday, November 15, the Rhino Theater will have a special performance of the Wizard of Oz for the benefit of our Outreach Programs. The show is at 2 PM at the Rhino Theater on Wanaque Ave. in Pompton Lakes. There are still tickets left. I am very grateful to Carmela Wolosz and everyone at the Rhino Theater for this generous donation.

in my humble opinion) as well as Karnak and Luxor Temples. From there I flew back to Cairo, were I visited Christian Churches (one of which is where Mary, Joseph and Jesus stayed when they were fleeing from Herod). The last thing I did was go to the Khan El-Khalili Bazzars, which were filled with color, people and anything you could possibly want! Now I am back in Jerusalem. I’m glad I missed the mishap that happened at the Western Wall. Please pray for peace between the Jews and Palestinians. Miss you all. Peace and All Good, Fr. Joe It was a great week at St. Mary’s and I’m looking forward to another one to come. Thanks for all you do for us and have a great week yourself! Pace e Bene, Fr. Frank Sevola, OFM, Pastor Fr. T

oday celebrates the anniversary of the earliest basilica [a church that has been so designated because of its historical importance or other special dignity] of Christianity. St. John Lateran is the mother church of Rome, a reminder to us today that we are members of the Roman Catholic Church. The basilica was named in honor of St. John the Baptist and after the Lateranus family who lost their property to Constantine. Because of its elaborate baptistery, it is a station church [one of the churches in Rome that is appointed for special liturgical celebrations during Lent] for the Easter Vigil. (The litany of the saints was used when moving from station church to station church.) It is said that Constantine brought the altar upon which St. Peter offered mass when he lived in Rome to the basilica where it remains, still somewhat visible, though encased in a larger altar of stone.

Fr. Joe continues to have a great sabbatical. Recently, he was travelling in Egypt and sent this update: Dear Father Frank and the Good People of Saint Mary’s, This week I was able to cross one thing off my bucket list, I spent the week in Egypt. Seeing the pyramids, the Valley of the Kings, all the temples and ruins were just unbelievable. I spent two days in Cairo and with the aid of a guide went to the Cairo museum (a place I could have stayed a week!), some of the local churches and mosques as well as the pyramids. I flew to Aswan and took a Nile River cruise which stopped at many of the ancient ruins. It blows my mind that I was seeing and touching objects which were 5,000 years old. The cruise ended in Luxor where I visited the Valley of the Kings, (Ramesses III tomb was the most impressive (The Pastor’s Desk is continued next column)

A Franciscan Response...

For our Children and our Children’s Children

T

he following is from a statement read at the October 21 Kinnelon town meeting regarding a proposed Pilgrim Pipeline that would run through many local towns along Route 287 and includes Pompton Lakes. It would transport the most explosive Bakkan crude oil from the Northwest. It was presented by Camille Gaines, a Kinnelon resident and member of St. Mary’s Franciscan Response group, which is supporting town resolutions to prohibit Pilgrim Pipeline. “St. Mary’s is very proud to be a green community. St. Francis’ principles of respect for the environment and the oneness of creation and humanity empowers us, St. Mary’s Franciscan Response group, to speak on this issue. We believe we all have a responsibility and obligation to protect the environment. We need to focus on renewables rather than perpetuating the non-renewables that are destroying our environment. We are risking our towns’ safety and health for the profits of a private company, Pilgrim Pipeline, which relies and will make its vast profits on a limited resource. Meanwhile, the forests, the water supply, the air we breathe, the dense communities we live in, -- our individual and collective well-being, -- are all being put at risk. For what purpose? Tennessee Gas Pipeline did not choose to come along Rte 287 because of the risks of the vibration of the trucks along that route. Why would we agree to allow this pipeline of Bakkan crude oil which is the most explosive to come along that same route? We are bearing all the risks. And we get nothing in return. Who is to say that transporting via these pipelines is more stable than rail and barges? Additionally, who is to say that once they are transporting billions of gallons a year through the pipelines, they won’t continue to use barges and rail? This proposed pipeline seems to allow them to move faster and make more profit, at the risk to all the towns it passes through in New York and New Jersey. Who is looking out for us? Who holds Pilgrim accountable for anything that they say? Conclusion Remember, Kinnelon also states it is a green community. The longer we stay fixated on Pilgrim Pipeline and limited fossil fuels, the further we get from talking about renewable energy and doing something about it. When the pipes fail, and/or an explosion does happen, it may be too late. Let’s do the right thing, like our neighboring Oakland, Montville, Parsippany, Madison and Watchung, and pass a resolution against Pilgrim Pipeline. St. Mary’s, as a Franciscan community, speaks on behalf of the voiceless (which includes the earth), its air and water, and protects people who do not have a voice to speak about this issue, and, finally, for our future generations.” For more information about Franciscan Response group, please contact Jackie at: [email protected]

Ministry News (cont’d) Christ Caring for People through People Restore my joy in your salvation; sustain in me a steadfast spirit.–Psalm 51: 14 Life’s journey is a mix of happiness and difficulties. When we cannot cope and balance the two, we often wish we could share our problems and release our concerns to a supportive, confidential ear. We can! Stephen Ministers are trained, Christian caregivers who will listen, support and walk the difficult road with us in one-on-one, same sex relationships. They will listen as we replace fear or sadness, loneliness or oppression with a peace-filled and joy-filled spirit! For you or someone you love, contact:

Beverly Delleart Director of Stephen Ministry, Certified Spiritual Director 973-835-0374, Ext. 113 [email protected]

Your inquiry will always be attended to and handled confidentially. This ministry is provided on a no-fee basis for our community.
