Dan’s career began as a deputy with the Maricopa County Dan Saban Sheriff’s Office and continued with the Mesa Police Department where he worked his way up from patrolman to Commander. By this time, Dan’s solid reputation as a distinguished public safety leader was established and he was recruited by the Town of Buckeye to be Police Chief. In Buckeye, he transformed and reshaped a growing department, raised the standards of professionalism and performance, and rebuilt trust and respect for his officers in the community. Consistency Can Make the Difference Between Failure and Success! Have you heard the old say- meeting. Please get your reservation in by May 16th at ing, “If you are persistent, 10:00 am. you will get it. If you are consistent, you will keep it”? Being consistent is the difference between failure and success.

Everyone wants consistency, whether it concerns leading our country, state, Jan Stephenson, President of Palo Verde Republican Women

or local political clubs.

We also want to encourage you to be consistent in voting! Make sure you vote in the May 17th election. If you have a mail-in ballot, put it in the mailbox by Saturday, May 7th. If not, make sure you get to the Polls on May 17th. Both sides of Prop 123 have been presented to you. Make up your mind—be CONSISTENT—VOTE! Best Regards,

Jan

At Palo Verde we have certain rules you are asked to

follow. When you are consistent, our meetings are successful. For example, you are asked to make a reservation for our luncheon meetings by Monday morn-

ing at 10:00 am before our Wednesday meeting. The purpose of this rule is to allow Grayhawk the time to purchase the items needed and make sure they have the right numbers of employees on hand to prepare and serve the food. Please help us to be consistent in our count to them by making your reservations on time. If you make a reservation and later realize you

NFRW Pledges Unity in 2016 Election FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 19, 2016 CONTACT: Lisa Ziriax, 405-596-3873 or [email protected]

Republican Women Will Support Republican Presidential Nominee ARLINGTON, Va. – More than 150 Republican women leaders from across the nation gathered at the National Federation of Republican Women’s (NFRW) spring board meeting in Arlington on March 17-19, where they pledged to come together during the general election to support the 2016 Republican presidential nominee. The NFRW board unanimously adopted a resolution calling on members to actively support and work to elect the 2016 Republican nominee for president, as well as all Republican candidates for federal, state and local office. “The NFRW and its members have a 78-year track record of coming together in unity following a competitive primary campaign season, and this year will be no different,” NFRW President Carrie Almond said. “We are united and have a common purpose: to completely reverse course and end the failed policies of President Obama and the Democrats. The way to accomplish this is to send a Republican to the White House, and we will enthusiastically, wholeheartedly stand behind our party’s nominee.” Read the full resolution. Thanks Are In Order! Palo Verde RW and Scottsdale City Council Member Virginia Korte donated her 50/50 winnings from last month’s meeting back to the club! Thank you Virginia… Our treasurer gained $76 as a result! We have applied Virginia’s donation to our Bethesda Community Baptist Church project. We have set up a Children's Library at this African/American Church and are holding monthly Reading Parties. In June we hope to take the children on a field trip to Scottsdale's Museum of the West. Virginia’s donation will surely help with this activity. We are happy to have you as a member of our club. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Palo Verde RW women have generous hearts! We were able to donate many purses and toiletries to The Shoebox Ministries for their Mother’s Day project. The organization’s goal is to distribute 3,000 gift-filled purses to Valley family and domestic violence shelters including Chrysalis, Maggie’s Place, Casa de Amigas, Native American Connections and Sojourner Center.

A Resolution pointing out the reasons to vote against legalizing marijuana in Arizona passed unanimously at our April 20th meeting! We already have enough problems with alcohol addiction and doctor prescribed pain killers. Why would we want to legalize another drug that will lead to even more substance abuse? We must vote no on the legalization of marijuana in our state. Here’s why…

Resolution Against Legalizing Marijuana in the State of Arizona WHEREAS, Since the citizens of Colorado were the first to vote to legalize marijuana in 2012, “teen use [of marijuana] has risen dramatically and is now 74 percent higher than the national average;” and WHEREAS, Since legalization of marijuana in 2012, “Colorado has seen an increase in marijuana-related traffic fatalities, hospitalization and emergency visits, as well as marijuana-related calls to poison control centers;” and WHEREAS, “Today’s marijuana is a harmful, psychoactive, addictive substance that is much more potent than ever before – at least five times more powerful than the marijuana of the 1970s;” and

WHEREAS, “The American College of Pediatricians reported grave risks for youth: ‘Marijuana is addicting and has adverse effects upon the adolescent brain, is a risk for both cardio-respiratory disease and testicular cancer, and is associated with both psychiatric illness and negative social outcomes;’” and WHEREAS, “The U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado reported that illicit or black market drug activity in Colorado has not subsided since legalization and in fact, has increased;” and WHEREAS, “The initiative permits possession of one ounce of marijuana (60 marijuana joints) and an additional six marijuana plants per household (one plant can produce a rough average of 300 joints), one home could easily produce 1,800 joints under the proposed law;” and WHEREAS, “We know the costs associated with drop-outs, suspensions, and expulsions are exceedingly high, more than $400,000 per high school student in Arizona, and that marijuana use increases the risk of dropping out and lowers educational outcomes for youth”; therefore be it RESOLVED, That the Palo Verde Republican Women strongly urge all Arizonans to vote NO to legalizing marijuana when voting in the general election to be held on November 8, 2016. Political Education and Legislative Action

WE WILL HAVE A LOT TO DO FOR OUR CANDIDATES AFTER CONVENTION AND PRIMARIES TO MAKE DC A CLINTON-FREE ZONE The Presidential Primary season was long, but seemed to be over so quickly. Now we must forget all of that and start anew— there’s too much at stake. When we are asked to step up we must be ready. We don’t know what kinds of campaign work will be called for this year: social media, traditional, or something else. There’s always something worth sharing with your friends. We usually don’t have to fret over local elections, but it looks like many new voters will be coming out throughout the county. We will have to be pro-active to keep various offices RED. Don’t forget the Scottsdale Mayoral and Scottsdale City Council elections. There are ongoing happenings there because our local staff works full-time. Do your research using Google, Facebook, AZCENTRAL, or whatever sources you like best. There are three Mayoral candidates, the incumbent, a local businessman and activist, and a former Scottsdale councilman. They are Bill Crawford, Mayor Jim Lane, and Bob Littlefield. There are five city council candidates, three incumbents, one local businessman and activist, and one former councilman from a neighboring town. They are Suzanne Klapp, Virginia Korte, Guy Phillips, Tom Giller and Dan Schweiker. The daily notes from the RNC will continue of course. Enjoy the summer and rest up for the HUGE elections to come.

Paula CONUNDRUM The definition of the word Conundrum is: “Something that is puzzling or confusing.” Here are six Conundrums of socialism in the United States of America: 1. America is capitalist and greedy—yet half of the population is subsidized. 2. Half of the population is subsidized—yet they believe they are victims. 3. They believe they are victims—yet their representatives run the government. 4. Their representatives run the government—yet the poor keep getting poorer. 5. The poor keep getting poorer—yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about. 6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about—yet they want America to be more like those other countries. Think about it! And that, my friends, pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st Century. There’s more… 1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works. And here's another one worth considering... 2. It seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. But we never hear about welfare, or food stamps running out of money? What’s interesting is the first group “worked for” their money, but the second group didn’t. Think about it… And last but not least: 3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army back, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to illegal aliens. Submitted by Paula Linker. Thanks Paula!

Our keynote speaker is the always entertaining Arizona State Treasurer Jeff DeWit. DeWit spoke about the reasons why he believes Prop. 123 is bad for our state. There was a lively Question and Answer session afterwards as a result. Palo Verde RW member Cathy Riggs, candidate for Justice of the Peace, also spoke about why she is running and is qualified for this office. See Cathy’s ad on page 4 of this newsletter.

cal issues and volunteered off and on with my “former” party in Pennsylvania and somewhat here in Arizona. But during the 2008 presidential campaign, the direction my party was taking forced me to rethink what was best for our democracy. I saw the overreaching arm of federal government leading the way to a socialist state. Our Constitution, about which I had taught my students, was in jeopardy. Giving handouts to many Americans who could otherwise be productive citizens, was no longer my value. And so, after careful analysis and soul searching, I changed my party affiliation to Republican and went to Tea Party meetings, demonstrations and joined a local women’s Republican club and the Republican Jewish Coalition.

I am considering taking on the responsibilities of a precinct committeewoman to further solidify our state party. Issues that affect us all are a priority for me to be informed. And so each day, I spend much time learning from respected experts around the country.
