Sustainability Manager TBC Environment & Neighbourhoods Economic Development, Planning and Sustainability Executive Head Economic Development, Planning and Sustainability _____________________________________________________________ Overall Purpose of job To inspire and lead sustainability initiatives across the Council and amongst residents, which reduce resource use and carbon production. To maintain and enhance the borough’s reputation as an innovative and forward looking borough in the area of positive environmental, social and economic action. To act as an energetic champion for positive climate action, demonstrating through knowledge and insight the potential for green initiatives to enhance quality of life, personal wellbeing and economic outcomes Manage the sustainability team. Ensure that the Council retains its EMAS accreditation Coordinate sustainability initiatives in Sutton into a coherent and complementary action plan which will deliver measurable reduction in carbon production by 2017, including leading on:  The One Planet Sutton Delivery Plan produced by Sutton with the support of Bio-regional in recognition of Sutton’s status as a One Planet Living Borough  Sutton’s environmental audit strategy  The ECO and Green Deal partnership  The Community Well-Being Strategy  The emerging Sustainable Travel Strategy  An extensive programme of bio-diversity education and support  A Green economy strategy  Implementation planning for a decentralised energy network  The Sustainable Suburb Action plan for Hackbridge  Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation _____________________________________________________________ Main Duties and Responsibilities 1. Articulate Sutton’s current sustainability offer and propose the way forward, taking into account the borough’s strategic objectives and emerging trends in support of sustainable living including collaborative consumption, community energy initiatives, intelligent cities and the green economy 2. Proactively consult with Elected Members and internal and external stakeholders to agree the ambition for sustainability.

3. Accountable to the One Planet Sutton Board for the effective programme management and annual reporting of the One Planet Sutton Delivery Plan. Identify practical opportunities to embed Sustainability principles into Council policies, operations and other areas of influence to ensure targets are reached. 4. Lead and develop effective partnership working with relevant national and regional government bodies and local sustainability activists to identify opportunities to enhance delivery. 5. Enhance and support the further development of community capacity to identify and implement ‘bottom up’ opportunities for environmental action. 6. Promote Sutton’s commitment to sustainability through proactive communications strategies and informed responses to sustainability opportunities stemming from to the Mayor of London’s, national and SubRegional agendas 7. Provide advice, written reports and briefings to MPs, Committees, Members and Corporate Management Team on sustainability issues as required 8. Lead the work of the sustainability team in the areas of fuel poverty reduction, Eco-Schools programme, EMAS auditing 11. Lead and motivate staff to provide continuous improvement in quality and cost effectiveness of services. 12 Implement the Council’s staff and project performance management systems to ensure effective monitoring and delivery of plans, programmes, services and projects. 13. As a member of the service’s senior management team contribute to the development of effective strategies which advance sustainability principles whilst also recognising the Council’s growth priorities as articulated through the Opportunity Sutton programme. Education and/or Experience

1.

Educated to degree-level, or equivalent.

2.

Qualification or substantial relevant experience in a discipline related to the delivery of environmental sustainability

3.

Experience in programme managing the delivery of sustainability strategies with evidence that actions have been delivered within anticipated timeframes and budgets.

Experience of creating opportunities for joint working and shared funding with public bodies, stakeholders and community groups to implement innovative sustainability interventions.

Successful experience of commissioning internal or external partner to deliver improved quantity and/or quality of service and monitor the delivery of contract to secure expected outputs and outcomes.
