JOB INTERVIEW EVENT Job Interview is an individual event that recognizes participant’s who use family and consumer sciences and/or related occupational skills to develop a portfolio, participate in an interview and communicate a personal understanding of job requirements. Participants must prepare a portfolio containing job information and examples and be prepared to fill out a job application and express their communication skills and job knowledge through an interview. Event Categories 1. Senior: Grades 10-12 2. Occupationally Specific: Grades 10-12 Eligibility 1. Participation is open to any state/nationally affiliated FCCLA chapter member(s). Chapter should select the category that corresponds with the type course in which the participants are or have been enrolled and the category indicated on the Affiliation Form. Event categories may be changed two weeks prior to the regional meeting for a $20 fee to pay for the cost of awards. This can be done by faxing in the Change/Deletion form located in the Forms/Resource section of the guidebook. Payment must be received in the state office prior to the region meeting. 2. The chapter's entry must be a dues-paying member from a state and nationally affiliated chapter, which is submitted with a postmark on or before November 1. Additional members wanting to participate in STAR and Proficiency Events may be affiliated online until two weeks prior to the region meeting. If affiliation paperwork and payment is not mailed by the 2nd Monday in January it must be brought to the STAR/Proficiency Event Headquarters room at the region meeting prior to STAR/Proficiency Event Registration to receive an FCCLA Confirmation Receipt. 3. The chapter advisor must submit the electronic entry forms on the Texas FCCLA website. STAR/Proficiency Event Payment Invoice and payment must be mailed to Family, Career and Community Leaders of America postmarked on or before December 1. 4. A designated chapter member must attend the regional or state leadership meeting to officially enter the event. The participant must be registered for the meeting. Note: Participant will need to pay for the conference registration fees and the STAR Event entry fees. 5. The original participant who entered, presented, and was designated as top achievers at the regional level may represent the chapter at the state competition. PROCEDURES & TIME REQUIREMENTS 1. Each participant will submit two portfolios (one must be the official FCCLA binder/notebook obtained from the National FCCLA store, www.fcclainc.org) to the Event Chairperson at the STAR Event Registration. At a designated time, the participant will have 15 minutes to fill out a job application. 2. Event chairperson and judges will have 10 minutes to preview the portfolio and job application before the interview begins. 3. The interview must be a minimum of 10 minutes, not to exceed 20 minutes in length. A one-minute warning will be given at 19 minutes. The interview will be stopped at 20 minutes.

4. Judges will use the rubrics to score and write comments for each participant. Participants will take one of the portfolios and leave one with the judge. The second portfolio must be picked up prior to 30 minutes after the last interview (at designated location). 5. The total time required for this event is approximately 30 minutes. GENERAL INFORMATION 1. A dictionary will be provided in the application room. Participants may only use a copy of their resume and references to fill out the job application. 2. Participants may use the portfolio during the interview process and answer questions about the portfolio at this time. No other materials may be used during the interview. 3. Participant must apply for a job that matches their current skills and relates to their career interests/goals. 4. Costumes/uniforms are not allowed. Thank you notes and follow-up letters are not allowed. 5. Disqualification will occur if:  The participant does not check in at the STAR Event Registration (participants must register for meeting and for STAR Events),  Participant(s) does not show up at designated time for competition or  Chapter entry is not presented. APPLICATION Participant will have 15 minutes to fill out a standard job application at the designated time. Neat/Complete

Job application should be filled out in black or blue ink and be complete, accurate, neat, legible, professional and contain correct grammar and spelling.

PORTFOLIO The portfolio is a collection of factual information that supports the job for which the participant is applying. Materials may be contained in the official FCCLA/STAR Events binder/notebook obtained from the National FCCLA store, www.fcclainc.org. All materials, including the divider pages and tabs must fit within the cover. The binder/notebook must contain no more than 33 pages: 1 project identification page, 1 table of contents page, 1 Planning Process summary page, 0-5 divider pages and up to 25 content pages including the documents listed below. Divider pages may be tabbed and may contain a title, a section name, graphic elements, thematic decorations, and/or page numbers; they must not include any other content. All pages must be one-sided only. All pages except divider pages must be 8 ½” x 11”. The portfolio will be turned in to the event chairperson at the STAR Event Registration.

One 8 ½ “ X 11” page on plain paper using black ink, with no graphics or decorations: must contain participant’s name, chapter name, school, city, state, region and job title desired. One 8 ½ “ X 11” summary page of how each step of the Planning Process was used to plan and implement the project; use of the Planning Process may also be described in the oral presentation. Give name of employer, job title, short job description, required hours and wages typically offered for this job. Include cover letter, resume and two letters of recommendation (one from a school official, administrator, counselor or teacher and one from an employer or other community representative).

Appearance

Describe school-based learning that enhances employability. Include a summary of school activities; career research projects; application of Family and Consumer Sciences and/or related occupation skills and their relationship to job; and an example of ability to communicate in written form. Describe work-based learning that enhances employability. Include career development planning; summaries of job shadowing, internships, apprenticeships, informational interviews or community service projects; and/or projects developed during these experiences. Include up to five examples of special skills, talents and/or abilities related to job and career interest/goals. These may be in any format but must fit within the dimensions of the portfolio. Audio and/or video recordings may be included in the portfolio but will not be considered by judges. Examples of special skills will be identified as such and are considered content pages. Portfolio must be neat, legible, professional and use correct grammar and spelling.

INTERVIEW The interview may be up to 20 minutes in length and will be conducted by judges. Questions will pertain to participant’s current skill level and the specific job for which they are applying. The portfolio should be used during the interview. Use of Portfolio

Attire and grooming suitable for specific job interview. Display effective verbal and nonverbal skills: Clarity of expression, eye contact, good posture, friendly, poised and personable. Show evidence of how present skills relate to job, including Family and Consumer Sciences and/or related occupations course work, and evidence of knowledge of specific abilities needed to perform job. Use portfolio to support understanding of job and emphasize skills.

JOB INTERVIEW CHECK LIST FOR ADVISORS Submit initial chapter affiliation form by the November 1st due date. Affiliate all STAR/Proficiency Event participants 2 weeks prior to the region meeting. If affiliation paperwork and payment is not mailed to the FCCLA Lockbox by the 2nd Monday in January it must be brought to the region meeting and turned in prior to the STAR/Proficiency Event Registration.

Submit entry(s) electronically on the Texas FCCLA website. Mail entry packet by the December 1st due date consisting of the following:  STAR/Proficiency Event Payment Invoice (print invoice after entry(s) has been submitted online)  entry fees and  Judges Recommendation Form (not required but requested).

Regional Meetings - Facsimile notification must be made to the FCCLA office before noon on the Tuesday prior to the competition.



State Meeting - Facsimile notification must be made to the FCCLA office before noon on the FRIDAY prior to the competition.

When making changes please fax Change/Deletion Form to 512-442-7100. The Change/Substitution Form is located in the Resources and Forms Section of this guidebook. 4.

Prepare a #10 standard business, self-addressed, stamped envelope to be turned in at the STAR Event Registration (if desired). The participant(s) and advisor's name must appear on the outside of the envelope. Only one envelope per team can be submitted. Any rubrics, which do not have an envelope, will be disposed of at the conference and will not be returned after the conference.

Purchase the official FCCLA portfolio obtained from the National FCCLA store, www.fcclainc.org. (Allow time for delivery)

Prepare portfolios as described in rules.

Take all needed supplies, materials and the chapter’s electronic FCCLA Confirmation Receipt to the STAR Event Registration at the meeting.

8.

Check adjusted time schedule after STAR/Proficiency Event Registration has ended to verify scheduled participation time.
