India in a mess.. Can we do anything? few decades ago the Mauritian PM admonished his countrymen saying ‘The world does not owe us a living. There are indeed no free lunches’. The message was repeated to Indians by our current Finance Minister in an earlier innings when India was under a huge debt burden in terms of US Dollars. Many other countries have also passed through a similar crisis and they at least had some prospects of foreign aid.

A

Now, with every other country looking for free snacks at least and no caterers, the message is even grimmer for India with its huge hungry population below the real poverty line. The poverty line too is rising with continual doses of double digit food inpation. The problem is compounded by the free fall of the rupee against the maMor currencies of the world led by the US Dollar. The number of rupees to a dollar and as somebody commented, has attained retirement status and has touched Rs 60/-. This has adversely affected the price we have to pay for coal and petroleum products on which our energy and transportation costs are dependent. The local producers of fuel gas and petroleum too are demanding higher prices on par with imported fuel. To cover up for the nightmare of &urrent $ccount Deocit import spends minus export earnings) faced by the country the Government is desperately chasing the mirage of prosperity through economic liberalization under its commitment to WTO by trying to attract more and more FDI Foreign Direct Investments) and FII Foreign Institutional Investments in our stock market). The Government has failed to realise that these are not panacea for its woeful economic management and monumental government corruption.

The list suggested is only indicative and you may have many more practical suggestions to the list. We are indeed unhappy with the Government for bringing the country to this sorry state. Though we can do little to change it at will, each one of us can act responsibly on things and situations under our control and then hope for the best.

All of us need to do the following: 1. When shopping make a special effort to buy Indian products with minimum foreign exchange content. If everyone contributes to saving a drop of foreign exchange, it can become an ocean of indigenous wealth. 2. At least temporarily postpone the purchase of luxury imported goods like SUVs and white goods, imported toys etc. Avoid consumption of imported food items. 3. Find ways and means of saving petrol costs by pooling arrangements especially Under these precarious for transporting school children and oèce going. The sad part of it all is that the opposition parties, if voted to power, will also in all probability emulate the bad example set by the present regime, unless by a miracle we elect a clean PM with great governance and leadership skills. This remains a distant dream.

citizens must not only value our voting franchise, but every one of us, especially the educated citizenry must immediately act responsibly. This response has to be totally voluntary since the Government lacks the moral courage and authority to enforce compliance due to its commitment to WTO. Yet we desperately need to conserve foreign exchange.

-Prof.N.Natarajan

In this already hostile environment, the ruling party is also trying to dole out huge unmerited concessions to its favourite business houses in the petroleum, coal and gas sector apparently. Politically pliable States too are at the receiving end of largesse from UPA. This is to raise political contributions in the election year thereby triggering further inpation.

[email protected]

FII is hot money entering and exiting the stock market destabilising it by causing high volatility. FD Investors realise the Government’s anxiety and are trying to extract more and more concessions. They want a 15 per cent return in dollar terms and this will cost us heavily. Moreover the returns will take a few years and no results are expected in the immediate future.

Childhood Goals “Once you realize that the road is the goal and that you are always on the road, not to reach a goal, but to enMoy its beauty and its wisdom, life ceases to be a task and becomes natural and simple, in itself an ecstasy.” - Nisargadatta

I have only wanted to do one thing in my life — a goal that I arrived as a grown up. I wanted to run a book shop. I never got round to doing this.. and I never will. But.. I am not greatly upset about it. In the long run, I don’t think I could have sat day in and day out and worked in a shop

The nicest part is that, modern life offers many traditional and offbeat choices. There are any number of oelds and enterprises in which you can pour your heart and soul into and be happy that you are doing something constructive other than earn a paycheck for services rendered. For most people, childhood goals have been left far behind. Reality, peer inpuences, family demands have made many forget those dreams and to fall in with the need of the hour. Childhood goals and your dreams are linked together. Just as it was important as a child to dream and think about goals, as an adult it is great for your soul to rethink your priorities, profession and pastimes Are you willing to take the plunge?

I never wanted to be a writer. I used to read a lot, I still do. It was my husband who kept telling me that since I have read so much of oction, I should try and write and give expression to all that was stored in my mind.

As we grow older, our goal posts change. It is inpuenced by families, children and peer pressure. There are a few people who can plunge in and change stream midway. We hear about white collar workers dumping their to 5 Mobs and taking to entrepreneurship that may include getting their hands greasy and dirty. There are people out there who have been pushing a pen and have gladly switched to a keyboard. IT people have got fed up of ProMects and deadlines and Mumped off the techno platform and gone off to open restaurants, organic farms and building structures. The urge to do something different attacks people regularly even making them take to the stage or to sing or play an instrument. The support from spouse and families helps them to experiment with their lives.

I never wanted to be a doctor as I had more than my share of them being a sickly child. I did like playing teacher as that was a tailor-made power wielding situation. I did become a teacher at the university level for three years. Then I became a storyteller for little kids and taught them Vedic Heritage and Values{but it Must happened Must as my acting on the stage and olms happened. I never wanted to be a heroine anyway

[email protected]

Frankly speaking, for most of my generation we really never had any goals as a child. All we wanted to do was to read books, study at school, learn music or art and grow up and get into a Mob. And all this Must happened in the course of time and we Must skated through life.

Smile The Healthy Way! outh is like a window for the body. Hence it is very important that you maintain your oral hygiene and keep your oral cavity healthy.

This article is to help you treat your teeth with utmost care which most of us fail to do in general. Although everyone knows what has to be done no one seems to follow it. We all know for a fact that dental procedures can put a deep hole in one’s wallet. So why not take care of them from the very beginning? Here are some basic tips to keep your teeth healthy. Brush Twice Daily. Brushing twice is very necessary especially at night as there is decreased saliva formation at night and may even lead to cavity formation. Rinse Your Mouth Properly After Every Meal. Rinsing will help you to get rid of all the food particles stuck in your mouth and thus prevent cavity formation and halitosis.

Avoid Using Tooth Picks. Use Dental Floss and Inter dental Brushes instead. Usage of tooth picks may inMure the gums and soft tissue and may lead to spacing. Go For A Professional Cleaning. Tartar formation and minute particles cannot be removed by simple brushing so go in for a professional cleaning at least once a year. Give Your Gums Some Massage. Use your index onger to massage your gums for a minute every day. This will make them strong and healthy. Always Clean Your Tongue. People often neglect their tongue which is also equally important as teeth. Cleaning of tongue is very essential as an unclean tongue may lead to bad breath/ halitosis. Use Mouth Rinses. It will save you from bad breath and make your gums healthy. Also it keeps your mouth germs free for the next few hours. Healthy Diet. This may not seem of great value but it deonitely is. Your diet should contain all the possible obers to make your gums healthy and for your teeth to stay strong. Say NO To Sweets At Night. Avoid eating sticky and sweet food at night as it may lead to cavity formation. Sticky food doesn’t come out easily and tends to stick there for a longer duration causing problems at a later stage. Say NO to Tobacco. Quit Smoking, Tobacco Chewing, Or Betel Nut Consumption. These not only cause inMury to health but also destroy the health of your teeth. Are You Diabetic? It is mandatory to get your sugar levels checked regularly as high sugar levels

can cause multiple lti l iinfections f ti iin your mouth th also. l Brush Systematically. 1. Firstly, brush the outer surfaces of the upper and lower teeth. Gently move the toothbrush in small scrubbing motions, working on two to three teeth at one time. 2. Then brush the inner surfaces of teeth in the same way as brushing the outer surfaces. 3. When we brush the inner surfaces of front teeth, we should hold the toothbrush upright using gentle motion brushing from the gingival margin towards the crowns of the teeth. 4. Finally, brush the chewing surfaces of the teeth with the toothbrush moving backward and forward. Points to note: Even if you have grasped the toothbrushing technique, it is important to use appropriate toothbrush and toothpaste. Toothbrushing cannot remove plaque from the adMacent tooth surfaces. They have to be cleaned by dental poss or poss holder. Finally, always remember one strange fact about oral care: Higher the standard of living, the more likely it is for tooth loss to occur - Dr. S. Karthikeyan,MDS Senior Consultant, Oral & Maxillo Facial Surgeon Vee Care Dental Clinic [email protected]
