Job purpose This job exists to supervise, coordinate and undertake the planning and implementation of projects that give effect to Council’s strategies and policies for the sustainable management of land and protection and enhancement of indigenous biodiversity within the Bay of Plenty region. This position is also to promote and support community, Council and national agency initiatives aimed at implementing sustainable land management practices and protecting indigenous biodiversity.

Supervise and coordinate the planning, development and implementation of projects to support the sustainable management of land to enhance and protect indigenous biodiversity. Monitor land management practice and threats to indigenous biodiversity within the Bay of Plenty region; report on this; and recommend action to ensure best practice is being applied and legislation is being complied with. Inspect properties and negotiate with landowners/occupiers/Maori to ensure project objectives and regulatory requirements are met. Initiate and implement education programmes to enhance community awareness of sustainable land management practices. Support the establishment and maintenance of community initiatives to implement sustainable land management practices and to protect indigenous biodiversity.

Provide expert advice, information and reports. Coordinate and supervise contract works and contractors associated with field work. Supervise students undertaking field work and administrative duties. Manage expenditure for Land Management and Biodiversity budgets as directed by the Manager Land Resources.



Undertake other relevant duties as directed by the Manager Land Resources.

Establish and maintain close working relationships with internal and external contacts including Local Authorities, ratepayers, landowners, suppliers, consultants, and contractors. Maintain a close working relationship with internal and external contacts. Acting as a representative to council at appropriate Local Government conferences and seminars, and other events held within the region. Represent council at appropriate regional and national forums, local government conferences, seminar and other events as directed by the Manager Land Resources.

Regularly handling complex face-to-face negotiations with landowners/occupiers, iwi, community groups and other affected parties. A relevant tertiary qualification in the land and/or resource management field or equivalent experience. At least five years’ experience in a relevant land management role. 1

A valid driver’s licence required*

Further training to gain certification to the NZ Association of Resource Managers is desirable. Experience is in a local government environment. Contractor supervision experience.
