Job Description: College Readiness Program High School Team Leader (Part-Time, Year Round)

Program Overview: Circle Urban Ministries’ College Readiness (CR) Program serves students in 5th-12th grades for the sake of ensuring that each participating student is adequately equipped for post-secondary success with a promising vision for his or her future. Program participants are students from Chicago’s west side. Many will be the first in their families to attain a college degree. The approach of the College Readiness program is threefold: 1) to inspire students to adopt positive, postsecondary aspirations for education and careers, 2) to support students academically to ensure their ongoing matriculation toward college, and 3) to facilitate practical assistance to these students and their parents to ensure their connection to postsecondary institutions. College Readiness incorporates the following concepts and activities into its year-round programming with students: ● ● ● ● ●

College preparation Leadership Development Academic assistance Social opportunities Spiritual development

(C.L.A.S.S.) All College Readiness programming is based on the following “5 Core Factors,” which are research-based criteria for student success: 1) Academic rigor 2) Development of college and career aspirations 3) Parental involvement and parent knowledge about college and career readiness. 4) Social and cultural support (peers, family, and mentors) 5) Access to college and career information (for students and parents) College Readiness is in its fourth school year of operation, and we are expanding our existing services to increase our program’s reach and impact with high school youth in our neighborhood. We are seeking a well-qualified High School Team Leader to facilitate high school programming with participants throughout the school year. You must be prepared to think creatively and bring fresh ideas and approaches to moving our High Schools students towards acceptance in and success at the college of their choice.

Reports to College Readiness Program Coordinator Position Overview The High School Team Leader will assist in the development of effective partnerships with neighborhood high schools, assist in increasing high school student enrollment and participation to capacity, and facilitate all aspects of high school programming as described below. Responsibilities: OUTREACH: ● Assist in the initiation and development of working partnerships with neighborhood high schools for the sake of student referrals and recruitment, student participant outcome tracking, and guidance counselor/teacher collaboration. ● Assist in the recruitment and enrollment of high school students to maximize program capacity to 15 students in the 9th-10th grades and fifteen students in 11th-12th grades. ● Developing relationships with a variety of colleges, universities, and businesses for our High School teams to visit throughout the year (especially breaks and summers). ● Assessing local resources for referral purposes and collaboration. ● Hosting and attending College and/or Career Fairs (independently or jointly) ● Regular communication and collaboration with participant’s parents/guardian, mentors, teachers and guidance counselors to ensure each participant’s ongoing success. ● Recruit volunteer tutors and program assistants. PROGRAMMING & PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: ● Know Circle Urban Ministries’ mission and vision. ● Implement school-year high school student programming, including: - 9th-10th grade programming 5:00-7:30pm Mondays and Wednesdays. - 11th-12th grade programming 5:00-7:30pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. - Coordinating and leading a college campus or career exposure outing for high school participants at least one Saturday morning per month. ● Facilitate High School program elements, including: - Standardized test practice (ACT - along with the EXPLORE and PLAN pretesting , SAT, NWEA Map Testing) - Common Core State Standards (The new ISBE standards for Math and English Language Arts) - Character-building, ethics, morality, and servant-leadership discussions. - Respect, support, reconciliation, and the edification of others. - Provision of academic skill development workshops (Such as learning styles, study habits, thesis statement-based, persuasive writing, referencing your sources, note-taking, public speaking, research strategies, test anxiety, the power of peer influence, critical analysis and critical reading skills, group learning/studying versus individual learning/studying, vocabulary-building, out-of-school reading, time management, working on group projects, differentiating between opinion and evidence, ability to use numerical expressions, researching and securing financial aid, etc…)

Individualized, interest-based college and career research project. Team-building through the development of a college-bound culture among participants. - Career Exploration and Planning - Assisting participants with homework on a variety of subjects - Clearly communicating and reinforcing high program expectations for participants’ engagement and conduct. - Leading junior and senior participants through the college and scholarship application process. - Life Skills (such as anger management, conflict resolution, time management, overcoming obstacles / perseverance, teamwork, respect, taking responsibility, community awareness, career planning, character, morals, integrity, ethics, etc…) Implementation of in-house standardized Math and Reading exams for participants up to three times per year. Supervise and train volunteer tutors who provide assistance during College Readiness High School program sessions. Record and track participants’ outcome data including program attendance and conduct, in-house standardized test scores, GPA’s, PLAN and ACT scores, and progress toward program outcomes. Manage student portfolio development, GPA goals, and student incentive program. Assist as a chaperone with 7th and 8th grade outings on Friday afternoons (during school year). Work with existing College Readiness team to collaborate toward ongoing programming development and improvement. Establish and supervise a community service component to address high school requirements. Develop and update training manuals and program policies and procedures. Additional tasks and responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications Qualified candidates will possess the following qualities and/or achievements: ● Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (Education, School Counseling, Social Work, etc…) ● 2 or more years of relevant experience working with youth. ● Experience with testing and evaluation. ● Demonstrated successful outcomes in high school youth programming ● Passionate about seeing high school youth growing up in the inner city realize their full potential. ● Relevant experience working with high school youth, preferably in an urban setting. ● Enthusiasm to take an existing program to the next level of performance. ● Initiative, drive and networking skills to expand the College Readiness program’s impact in the Austin community through partnerships with neighborhood high schools. ● Strong organizational skills. ● Excellent written and spoken communication. ● Ability to provide accurate homework help and tutoring across a range of high schoollevel subjects.

Proficient with Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and internet. ● Must pass a fingerprint background check. ● CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain certifications within the first month). ● A valid driver’s license and car insurance. Required Character Traits: 1. A Great Love of Teens: The High School Team Leader must have a heart for creating nurturing environments where teens can excel. He/she must understand youth development and have the ability to create or organize age-appropriate activities for high schoolage teens. The High School Team Leader must be capable of helping others (employees and parents) see the amazing potential in each student and the benefit of encouraging family and school participation in the positive development of the teen youth 2. Excellent Communicator: The High School Team Leader must consistently demonstrate excellent verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills. He/she must be able to convey ideas in an accurate and concise manner. The High School Team Leader must always demonstrate the ability to guide teens and staff without yelling, negative body language, or hands-on contact involving any type of force (includes grabbing, pushing, manhandling, physically moving a non-compliant child, or any such contact). He/she must never use derogatory language, engage in conversations that do not edify, or demonstrate negative behavior. The High School Team Leader must feel comfortable speaking to individual parents and at assemblies. 3. Positive Attitude: The High School Team Leader must possess a positive outlook on life. He/she must be able to convey a positive image to teens and adults. He/she must be capable of responding to challenges as opportunities to teach and to learn. The High School Team Leader must have a powerful sense of discernment and the ability to clearly articulate a positive vision for the program. 4. Leadership: The High School Team Leader must possess servant-leadership qualities that enable him/her to effectively lead a group of teens in a variety of activities and settings. He/she must be able to teach and reinforce positive character traits and life-skills to a group of teens and to staff. The High School Team Leader must be capable of assessing an employee’s skill level and assigning him/her to an appropriate task. Volunteers must also be assessed and guided so that their impact on the program always remains positive. 5. Detail-Oriented: The High School Team Leader must be able to follow instructions, capable of tracking time, knowledgeable of on-going and upcoming activities, and always knowledgeable of where the students are located at all times. The High School Team Leader must be acutely aware of external surroundings when engaged in outdoor activities with teens. He/she must be able to anticipate or quickly identify areas of conflict among teens and defuse the situation.

6. Organized: The High School Team Leader must effectively work in a multi-task environment. He/she must have exceptional organizing skills in the areas of scheduling activities, supervising staff, disseminating program information, setting up training sessions, and monitoring the program effectiveness. The High School Team Leader must be capable of assessing and streamlining their work environment. This may include delegation after appropriate staff training and with follow up. 7. Flexible: The High School Team Leader must smoothly transition from one project/task to the next. He/she must be open to working on challenging projects in areas of unfamiliarity. The High School Team Leader must have the ability to prioritize competing projects and have the ability to effectively delegate lesser tasks to individuals he/she has equipped and empowered. 8. Punctual: The High School Team Leader must report to work on time and on a daily basis. He/she must be prepared to impart to the staff and teens the benefits of punctuality/timeliness. Activities should consistently begin and end on time. Monitoring of staff punctuality and absenteeism may be required. 9. Dependable: The High School Team Leader must consistently demonstrate the ability to follow-through with assigned tasks. He/she must be capable of producing timely summary reports so that his/her entire team is aware of their performance as a working unit. The High School Team Leader must be capable of holding others accountable for required information and timelines. 10. Discreet: The High School Team Leader must be a person of high integrity who has the ability to work with sensitive information in a confidential manner. He/she must exhibit sound judgment when disseminating information to persons within and outside of Circle Urban Ministries. 11. Self-Starting: The High School Team Leader must seek opportunities to enhance the workflow and effectiveness of the After-school Enrichment Program. He/she must be capable of anticipating and acquiring the necessary materials to complete assigned tasks. 12. Team-Oriented: The High School Team Leader must make himself/ herself an integral part of the College Readiness, After-school Enrichment Program, Mentoring, and Circle Urban Ministries families. He/she must seamlessly coordinate work activities for employees and volunteers. The High School Team Leader must look for ways to have a positive impact on after-school activities. 13. Computer-Literate: The High School Team Leader must have a working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, and e-mail. 14. High Integrity: The High School Team Leader must possess a firm foundation of social and spiritual values and a tremendous moral code. He/she must be capable of nurturing an environment where high values and morals are emphasized.
