JESUS FIRST PRAYER GUIDE | 1

The mighty acts of God in generations past The mighty acts of Jesus Christ on our behalf The mighty acts of God in our present situation The God who holds our future

INTRODUCTION

Volume Two of our Jesus First Prayer Guide begins in celebration of the mighty acts of God. The scriptures featured in weeks 1-4 will guide our prayers as we acknowledge:

The great revivals throughout history all began with prayer and repentance. The scriptures we will read and mediate on in weeks 5-8 will call the church and its members to repentance, focusing on the following areas: Acknowledging our sins Confessing our sins Turning away from sin and toward God Living the victorious life

In weeks 9-11 we will look at the Gospel that empowers our lives and our prayers and gives us everything we need to sustain life. “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire” (2 Peter 1:3-4 ESV). The gospel of salvation will bring us to a saving faith in Christ. The gospel will sanctify our body, soul, spirit, and all of life to the glory of God. The gospel will take us all the way home to the glory of God.

We will end the quarter by focusing on our relationship with God as we pray through the 119th Psalm. The spiritual union of “Christ in us and us in Christ” is maintained by communication with God through His Word and prayer. 2 | JESUS FIRST PRAYER GUIDE

OPTIONAL EXTENDED TIME OF PRAYER

We suggest that, at some point this quarter, you spend an extended period of time in Bible reading, prayer, and meditation. Set aside a minimum of two hours of uninterrupted time with your Bible, a pencil and paper, and an open mind and heart. The section celebrating the mighty acts of God lends itself well to this. Start with the scriptures for Week One, Day One and read through Week Four, Day Seven. Read, meditate, listen, respond in prayer to what God is saying to you, and you will find Him revealing Himself to you as the Sovereign God who worked mightily in the past to bring salvation to fallen man and who still accomplishes mighty acts which will “bring us all the way home.”

Why have an extended time of prayer? To follow Christ’s example To have uninterrupted fellowship with God To grow your faith and confidence in God To solidify Christ’s lordship in your life To receive guidance from God What should I do during this time? Read your Bible Meditate on what you are reading Pray for whatever comes to your mind Write things down What do I do during this time? Listen to God as much as or more than you talk to Him Pray scripture back to God Pause to meditate

Psalm 119:169-176

“The unlimited potential of prayer as seen through the promises in the Bible is staggering, as God moves into action in the lives and situations that we bring before Him.

Yet, little praying is done. Why? Because the prayer lives of many people have been discouraging and frustrating.

Why? Because the basic feeling seems to be that prayer is an attempt to move God over to our point of view — to get God to do what we want done — to use Him as a means to our end.

So, somehow, it seems easier to try to do it ourselves, the best we can, than to get God involved in it. Yet, in prayer we ought to seek to discover God’s point of view and how, when, and where He wants us to move and live . . . and obey.” Peter Lord
