Welcome & Objectives I hope you will attend the first annual Jeanne Anderson Alzheimer’s Conference. Saturday’s program will offer the latest information about new approaches to understanding the patient; using anti-dementia medications; and the importance of caring for the family. We will also review the relationship between depression and Alzheimer’s disease, and explore the role of palliative care in caring for the late stage patient. Sunday’s program will focus on the critical role of activities for the person with Alzheimer’s disease. Learn about the importance of physical and mental exercise; multi-modal treatment, and a new initiative here at Dartmouth which pairs students with persons with the disease, for the benefit of both. Sunday’s program is offered free of charge, thanks to the generous support of the Jeanne Estee Mackay Anderson Alzheimer’s Disease Support and Education Fund. Continuing Education Credits will be offered for Saturday’s program. Robert Santulli, MD Course Director By the end of the continuing education activity, the learner will be able to: •

Describe the clinical management of dementia-specific medications to treat individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) in the community and in long term care settings.

Discuss the importance of psychosocial interventions for family members and patients as part of optimal comprehensive care for people with dementia and their family members.

Review palliative care needs for individuals with advanced dementia and their caregivers.

Outline the multiple relationships between depression and Alzheimer’s disease.

Articulate three different ways in which artistic experience may affect the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease patients and the clinicians who care for them.

This conference is supported in part by a generous grant from the Jeanne Estee Mackay Anderson Alzheimer’s Disease Support and Education Fund. Jeanne Estee Mackay Anderson 1925-2008

This conference is co-sponsored by: The Department of Psychiatry, the Dartmouth Centers for Health and Aging and the Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences.
