Message from the Executive Director

Dear Marj, I want to congratulate you on a recognition long overdue for your service and dedication to the Center. I wish there were words that could truly express how thankful I am to you for working with me for the past 24 years, but even if there were, sometimes a thank you is never enough. I was never quite sure why you stayed to work with me all these years, after having retired from working for the Federal government for over 40 years. All I know is that I never deserved to have you here. Back in 1989, I remember when I first heard that a recent retiree named Mrs. Fletcher who knew nothing about the Center or the San Francisco Japanese American community was going to join our Board of Directors. I thought, this lady must be lost, have the wrong organization or must be crazy! It turned out that I was right; you were all of those. I know this because I was too, having just accepted the job as the new interim Executive Director, but together we somehow figured it out and our lives and the life of this organization would be changed forever. Can you believe it will be a year shy of a quarter century that we have been working together? That’s nearly half my entire life! Back then the Center was a very different place - we worked with typewriters and adding machines, we kept track of our members and donors using index cards, and you even took short-hand for me. There was no gymnasium/community hall and our main focus was the capital campaign and trying to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars. It was difficult back then, but it was good. We worked hard because we had big dreams to fulfill and a vision of what this place might one day become. Today, those dreams we used to think about happen every day. The Center is bustling each day with four generations of our community, we offer 100 programs and events each year, and we have even expanded our programs beyond the San Francisco Bay Area, to include statewide, national and international activities. We also launched many community and groundbreaking initiatives such as Save the Japanese YWCA, Save Japantown Bowl, Preserving Our Japantowns, Japanese American-U.S./Japan relations projects, and international youth exchange programs to Japan. We even became an international relief organization when we needed to for the Kobe earthquake in 1995 and most recently, the Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. But one of the most important things that we were able to achieve was being able to make the Center a home, a place where people want to come, whether it’s to participate in programs, attend events, or just hang out with you. It’s hard to imagine what the Center and the community would be like today without you. Without you most of these accomplishments would not have been possible, because if you had not agreed to work with me and hang around for all these years I would probably not be working here today. The most amazing part of us working together for the past 24 years is that you never quit on me, walked out the door, or left the Center because of something I did or said, although, I am sure you had a foot out the door more than once. But, I want you to know that out of all the wonderful and incredible things that have happened to me at the JCCCNC over the past 25 years, the one that I treasure most is you. Sometimes a thank you is never enough, but I want you to know that you have been the best boss that I ever had and probably the only way that I could ever repay you is to keep working for you for another 25 years! With appreciation, smiles and a lot of laughs,

Paul Osaki

I want you to know that out of all the wonderful and incredible things that have happened to me at the JCCCNC over the past 25 years, the one that I treasure most is you.

Dear JCCCNC Members, Thank you for all of your support, dedication and commitment. As we gathered all the materials for this newsletter I am reminded of how incredible our members are. Over 200 of you helped carry on a wonderful tradition of the Colma Cemetery Clean up, you ran your hearts out and shared in a great potluck at the Track Meet Undokai, and everyday I look forward to those wonderful interactions I get to have with you between classes or workshops here at the JCCCNC. As the new Membership Coordinator I want to make sure every member is welcomed and knows how much we appreciate them. What I didn’t expect is the warm welcome and kind words I have received from our members. It is those interactions that remind me how special our members are and how lucky I am to work here. Honoring Our Ancestors: Annual Colma Cemetery Clean-Up In preparation for the 62nd annual Community Memorial Day Services at the Colma Japanese Cemetery, over 200 volunteers from ages 2 to 85 years old gathered on Saturday, May 18 for the JCCCNC’s Annual Cemetery Clean-Up day. Volunteers from around the Bay Area journeyed to the Japanese Colma Cemetery to pull weeds, rake leaves, wipe headstones, and place 400 fresh flowers throughout the three-acre cemetery. “It was touching to see the community come together to beautify the Colma Cemetery to support those who cannot visit anymore,” said volunteer Lauren. This annual community service project organized by the JCCCNC began in 2010 as a way to honor the past, remember those who passed on, bring the community together and educate others about a place that deeply represents the history of the Japanese American community. “It was great to see over 200 volunteers of all ages come together to pay respect to those that came before us by weeding, washing, raking and beautifying the cemetery.  A strong feeling of community flowed throughout the day and I’m thankful to have been a part of such a fun and meaningful event,” said Ryan Kimura, Director of Programs and Community Affairs.

In attendance for the clean-up were Deputy Consul General Nobuhiro Watanabe and Akira Ishido from the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco office and June-ko Nakagawa of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Northern California. Jay Wong, from the Japanese Community Youth Council, who brought 30 volutneers, stated, “It was great to see the younger generation stepping up to take charge and lead such a well organized cemetery cleanup.” The JCCCNC would like to thank the following organizations for helping to make this event a success: Alpha Phi Omega of San Francisco State University, Berkeley Higashi Temple, Boy Scouts of America Troop 58, Buddhist Church of San Francisco, Eden Youth Group, Hawaii Chamber of Commerce of Northern California, Hawaii Music Live, Japanese American Citizens League, Japanese Benevolent Society of California, Japan Society of Northern California, Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Northern California, JBBP Rosa Parks, Nihonmachi Little Friends, Japanese Community Youth Council (JCYC), Konko Church of San Francisco, San Francisco Drakes, San Francisco Japanese American Religious Federation (JARF) and Seiko Kai.

JCCCNC Special Events

Athletes of All Ages Participate in 7th Annual JCCCNC Track Meet On Sunday, June 23, over 100 athletes—beginners and experienced—gathered and sprinted, jumped and raced at the JCCCNC’s 7th Annual Track Meet held at Gunn High School in San Mateo, CA. Events included the 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, & 3200 meter races; soccer kick; softball throw; long jump; triple jump; 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays and of course, the toddler 4x25 meter relay and the 25 meter sprint, which were highlights of the day. In addition to the track events, this year the JCCCNC added a new event focused on getting all family members involved in the fun—Family Undokai (“sports day”). In Japan, school sports days usually include sprints and various types of running events, as well as other events such as egg-and-spoon races, three-legged races, and similar activities. The JCCCNC’s Family Undokai included

100 participants in three events that required a parent and child to team up and participate in a three-legged race, egg-and-spoon race, and eating a donut on a string. The JCCCNC hosts the Annual Track Meet with the intention of providing a fun, friendly and community oriented sports event for all ages. This year’s event was a great success and the JCCCNC hopes to see everyone at next year’s track meet.

Kase Program Interns Gain Insight Into Japanese American Nonprofit Organizations The Kase Nikkei Community Scholarship Program was created in 2011, by the JCCCNC with generous support of community member G. Kase, to provide financial scholarships for youth who are pursuing their college education and to support their leadership development which is vital to the future of our Japanese American culture and community. Each summer the JCCCNC welcomes summer interns. This year, five ambitious college students helped the JCCCNC continue to meet the evolving needs of the community. Nina Bazan-Sakamoto San Francisco, California School: San Francisco State University, Class of 2017 Major: International Relations with an International Business/ Economics and a Japanese language minor The Kase programs offers me many opportunities to learn more about the inner workings of the Japantown community through many different angles. Learning about how our community works would allow me to use that knowledge in different arenas as well. A society is composed of many different communities with their own unique qualities which should be valued with vitality allowed. I think that it is important for me to understand the needs of my own community but also to harmonize with others. Therefore, in the future when I work as a diplomat I will understand what is important to a community and what is needed to keep them going. The Kase internship also allows me to get involved in helping to improve Japantown. I value Japanese culture and I want to do all that I can here to contribute and preserve it.

Mika Segawa San Francisco, California (originally Edogawa-ku,Tokyo) School: San Francisco State University, Class of 2014 Major: Political Science and Sociology I believe that the Kase program will be a good step toward my dream, which is to become a Japanese diplomat and possibly an international attorney in the United States. In order to fulfill my dream, it is important that I have good communication, as well as leadership and public speaking skills, and I know that this program will help me improve these skills. This program will challenge me, since I am originally from Japan and the Japanese American community is still new to me. Through this internship, however, I am excited to learn more about Japanese Americans, including their history, and to share my culture and experiences with more people.

Tara Umemoto Sacramento, California School: UC Berkeley, Class of 2015 Major: Social Welfare with (intended) Education minor I have been exposed to many issues in other communities growing up, but I am not fully aware of the issues facing my community, the Japanese American community. I would like to learn more about these issues, so that as a Japanese American youth leader, I can help fight them. However, I can only do so much through my various clubs and volunteering. I wish to do more, and reach beyond just my school and church. While I have developed many skills, which will help me provide support to the greater Japanese American Community, I know that I still have much to learn. I believe that the Kase Program provides the best opportunity for me to further develop these skills as well as learn new ones while placing me directly in the community that I want to serve. These skills will help me continue to reach beyond the school and church communities, and to be that something which so many people lack, that something which I have had my entire life, a helping hand.

Andrew Chihiro Sumi Hercules, California School: San Jose State University, Class of 2015 Major: Hospitality / Hotel Restaurant Management I wanted to participate in the Kase Program because I wanted to give back. Growing up in the Japantown community, I have seen many changes happen. In recent years I have seen a decline in Japanese owned businesses as well as the number of Japanese-American youth present. I would like to help with cultural preservation as well as try and get the younger generations to come back to Japantown.

Miya Sommers Berkeley, CA School: UC Santa Barbara, Class of 2014 Major: Global Studies This past year I began organizing around issues affecting the APIA community. However, I realized that though I have a strong connection with this broad identity group, I wasn’t working for my own Japanese American community. It felt hypocritical to be advocating for other communities without doing something for my own. So I applied for this program with the desire to do something positive for the current and future JA community. On a more personal level, this program has allowed me to plant my roots in this community. Being from Berkeley, I had no idea that across the bridge there was anything like the JCCCNC. But now that I’ve found my way here,  I don’t want to leave. I want to keep volunteering at the golf tournaments and street fairs. I want to see my children running down these hallways. And when the time is right, I want to eat lunch at Kimochi as a senior. This program has helped me see myself as a member of JTown, and in return, I want to continue the legacy of Japantown.

Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California - Summer 2013 9

JCCCNC Community In 1973, the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California was incorporated as a non-profit organization by the Secretary of the State of California. As we celebrate this milestone, we also look toward the next 40 years. Just as the dreams of the Issei and Nisei made the JCCCNC possible, it is up to present and future generations to carry on the foundation laid before them while building their own legacy, ensuring the Center will continue to be a place where the arts, culture, and community come alive.

JCCCNC Community

A Chat with “Grandma Marj” Fletcher It was mid-afternoon when I bashfully ask Marj if she would be willing to sit down with me and answer a few questions about her life. She reluctantly agreed, and as I scribbled notes down on my yellow legal pad, I slowly saw the remarkable life of Marj and the JCCCNC unfold. If you haven’t met Marjorie, she is the wiry lady with white curly hair sitting in the front office of the JCCCNC. On her desk is an adorable photo of her two great grandchildren, but don’t ask her age unless you’re looking for a firm slap on your back followed by “a lady never tells” with a mischievous smile. Marjorie is best known as “Grandma Marj,” and for over 20 years she has been a key caretaker of our community. Her life before the JCCCNC started as the youngest of six born in Southern California. When the war broke out her family moved to Idaho following the forced removal to Santa Anita and worked the sugar beets and potato farms. This was the first of many moves for Marj. She has worked in Utah, Denver, Korea, Hawaii, Washington DC, and San Francisco. During her days in Korea she would catch a free ride on a plane delivering the “Stars and Stripes” newspaper to Japan. “I rode that plane so much that my supervisor asked if I came to Korea to work or to visit Japan, and I told him, that’s right.” These trips to Japan helped Marj connect with her extended family, and she remembers fondly of the welcoming spirit of her relatives, a spirit she carried with her across the ocean to America and eventually to San Francisco in the late 70’s. Marj finally walked through our doors about ten years later when a friend brought her to a JCCCNC board meeting. According to the November 7, 1988 Board of Director’s Minutes “Marjorie Fletcher was recommended. She has already been contacted and has accepted.” Marj recalls the experience as much more of a surprise, that her trip with her friend to a board meeting turned into a board appointment. As she recalls this story, she tilts her head to the side and says, “Can you believe that?!” I simply nod my head in agreement and try to picture the JCCCNC at that time with no gym, an incomplete lower floor, a staff made up of an Executive Director, a Secretary, and a newly appointed Director of Programs named Paul Osaki. “Paul has vision. He is always inspired by the Nisei and their work ethic, but he has vision. He is the one who put the Center on the map. Paul would tell me he would never let me quit. I would have to drop dead in the office and then he would bury me on top of the gym roof,” says Marj. I pause to search her face for any signs of resentment from such a blunt and morbid statement, but only found her smiling with eyes reminiscing about past bantering with Paul. Paul and Marj have worked together for over 20 years and have seen the JCCCNC grow in membership, programming, facility, but most importantly in our reach and in our ability to give back to the community. In an editorial in 1983, Reverend David Nakagawa writes about the need for a community center. He writes about a place that welcomes people into our community. Marj embodies that welcoming vision. “I like to do things that people enjoy, I’ve always enjoyed meeting and talking with the people who come to the Center.” She also reminds me that at one time she was a stranger to the San Francisco Japanese American community and that this community welcomed her. So if you haven’t met Marj, she is the wiry lady with white curly hair sitting in the front office, and if you would like to know what she has accomplished, don’t ask for a list of accomplishments because she won’t tell you. Instead come in on one of Marj’s days off and sit in the front office and count how many phone calls and people pop-in looking for Marj, or just listen to what our community says, “Everyone knows Marj. She is the reason so many of us come in, donate, and feel so welcomed at the JCCCNC.”

Money Matters — 2012 Financial Report

A regular day at the JCCCNC can include mailing out letters to donors and members, setting up classrooms, workshops and events and hundreds of administrative tasks. The JCCCNC also provides resources in the form of space, funds and services for community organizations, individuals and corporations. Included among those resources is low-cost office space for tenants such as Japanese Community Youth Council, Kimochi, Inc. and Nobiru Kai.

None of this would be possible without the financial support of the JCCCNC’s many donors, members and corporate sponsors. Also appreciated is the leadership of the Board of Directors, enthusiastic volunteers and hard-working staff. Their unwavering dedication, commitment and generosity to preserving the culture and community push the JCCCNC towards building a Center of greater service for this community. 2012 Revenue

Programs 18% Programs 18%

Membership 24%

The graph above summarizes revenue during the 2012 calendar year. It is the sole responsibility of the Development Department to produce the most significant revenue for most non-profit organizations. For the JCCCNC, donations account for 44% of our revenue, with individual donors collectively contributing the majority of the total. The Development Department’s principal charge is to ensure the sustainable growth and financial health of the organization by gathering resources and long-term support through grassroots fundraising, major donor cultivation and foundation and corporate sponsorships. The Membership Department’s role is to increase visibility of the JCCCNC within the surrounding community, instill in our members a sense of belonging and to grow and sustain relationships with people and organizations that believe in our charter. Currently, the JCCCNC is highly dependent upon senior and senior couple memberships; our aim is to increase our family and sustaining memberships to mirror our success with these contingencies. Programs brings 18% of the revenue for the JCCCNC, generated from class or events fees and donations. The JCCCNC makes a conscious choice to keep the class fees at a minimum as the JCCCNC believes in providing low cost services whereby no attendee is constrained by cost. Rentals derive 13% of our annual revenue. Similar to our affordable program philosophy, the JCCCNC believes in providing highly subsidized facility space for community groups and organizations with special reduced rates for non-profit organizations.

Development 24%

Building and Operations 50%

The graph above summarizes spending during the 2012 calendar year. Building and operations comprise 50% of the JCCCNC’s expenditures. On the building side, this includes expenses incurred from running a public facility visited by over 185,000 individuals annually, which primarily consists of maintenance and upkeep of a 17,500 square foot building. This includes utilities, equipment leases, licensing and permit fees and facility insurance. On the operational side, this includes staff salaries and benefits, staff development and training, office administration, public relations, advertising and marketing and consulting services. Programs expenses encompass all classes, corporate and community meeting room rentals, sporting events, seasonal workshops, community forums and events and cultural programs. By nature, the JCCCNC’s programs are highly resource intensive due to the associated (and often obscure) costs of materials, instructor and insurance fees and other related costs necessary to run successful programs. The JCCCNC provides over 100 workshops and classes on an annual basis. These workshops and classes are central to the mission of the Center which is to provide cultural arts, social, recreational and educational classes. Development expenses include all costs related to direct fundraising, following the Center’s comprehensive development program aimed at generating individual donor, philanthropic, various foundation and corporate support.

You will often see Sensei Chizuko Nakamura carrying a huge bundle of flowers up the steps of the JCCCNC on Wednesday nights for her Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) class. The floral aromas fill the air and will lead you to the classroom where you will find one of a kind vases waiting to support the ephemeral arrangements of the night. After originally studying Ikebana from her mother, Nakamura Sensei went on to continue learning and practicing under the Ikenobo school, which is the oldest and most practiced Ikebana style in Northern California. She has taught Ikebana in the United States for over 30 years, first at a local church for 20 years and now at the JCCCNC for the past three years. Her love for Ikebana and flowers can be seen in her weekly arrangements in the JCCCNC lobby, and through the smiles on her students’ faces at each class. Stop by the Center to enjoy the beautiful arrangements in the lobby or come and try a class.

“I want to enhance my techniques and creativity with this progressive instructor. Many of her students are non-Japanese, young and middle age men and women. I continue to learn new techniques and look forward to each class.” - Marie Kurihara

“Ikebana allows me to appreciate the inherent serenity and beauty of nature. In each Ikebana arrangement there is a reflection of life from new growth to mature foliage. Its emphasis on ‘less is more’ is a reminder to focus only on what’s important since life is filled with superficial distractions. As in the movie The Last Samurai, ‘…life with every breath…’ that is ikebana to me.” - Richard Der
