Our annual auction is this month. Be sure to come, bring your friends, plan to have a lot of fun and maybe even get some great stuff. Don’t forget your loonies and toonies and wave with gusto when you see something you want. We will have an enthusiastic team of volunteers eager for your auction donations. Donations may be a division or donation of one of your orchids, perhaps books on orchids you no longer want, orchid growing supplies (e.g. fertilizer, plant tags, potting medium, orchid pots), art work or orchid photo, or perhaps orchid jewellery you no longer wear. The money raised from this auction will be used to help support Society activities and OOS sponsored initiatives.

EDITOR’S NOTE

It’s auction time again! th

This January 20 the Ottawa Orchid Society will be holding its annual Society auction with all kinds of great stuff to buy from original art work to beautiful orchids and everything an orchid grower may need to grow orchids throughout the year. Don’t miss this event. In past years, members have donated grow stands, hydroponic grow lights, orchid pots and baskets, orchid jewellery, plant labels, orchid fertilizer, stakes, growing medium, and all kinds of great books and orchid journals. We have had lots of fun and the event raises funds used by the Society to help pay for our monthly out-of-town speakers as well as support the work being done by the orchid judging centers in Montreal and Toronto. We hope members, guests, and friends will show their enthusiasm by bidding when items of interest come up. Don’t be shy. Wave your bid card and good luck to all! Remember, at the close of the auction, everybody is a winner, from the successful bidders to each and every member in the Society who will benefit from the speakers invited to our monthly meetings and the AOS judges who attend our annual show to judge our orchids and exhibits and train student judges in the AOS judging program.

Pssssttttt. Donations to the auction are needed. If you have any orchids you would like to donate, these will be happily accepted. Perhaps you have a very large orchid, something really nice that could benefit from being divided. A division of such a plant would be just great! We have a lot of great orchid photographers in the Society. A mounted photograph or a series of your orchid photographs may be just the thing to make an orchid grower happy while waiting those longs months for her or his orchids to bloom. Pots, plant labels, orchid fertilizers, stakes, grow lights, and anything that an orchid grower uses would be welcome for the auction. Orchid jewellery, orchids on porcelain (cups, plates, etcetera), orchids on linen (e.g. scarves, tablecloths, clothing, etc.) are always items that are eagerly sought after by our members. Diane Aubry of our society is organizing this auction along with the help of her friends and other members of the Society. If you have any questions you can contact Diane by phone (home # is 819-568-6546) or by e-mail. Her e-mail address is [email protected] . Diane may require assistance with the auction. If you would like to help, let Diane know. Folks bringing items to the auction this Sunday are encouraged to bring their donations preferably before 1:00 pm so that items can be tagged and set out on viewing tables for bidders to examine. If you would like to bid, be sure to get your bid card before the start of the auction. Successful bidders may pay by cash or cheque and “cash out” at anytime during the auction or after the auction.

DECEMBER CHRISTMAS SOCIAL The December meeting/Christmas social was well attended and a grand affair. Many thanks to everyone who brought the numerous delicious treats for the “sweet table” enjoyed by everyone and the many lovely gifts that were raffled to members at the meeting. Further on in the newsletter we have a few pictures from the meeting along with a lot of great photos of the Members’ Show Table. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!

UPCOMING MONTHLY MEETINGS February Program – February 17, 2013 In February the Society will have the honour of hosting Thomas Mirenda. Tom Mirenda has been the Orchid Collection Specialist for the Smithsonian Institution for the last 10 years. There he cares for and curates an extremely diverse collection of orchid species and hybrids from all over the world. His position includes developing and producing huge educational exhibits using the collection plants that last up to 4 months and are visited by hundreds of thousands of visitors. Trained originally as a Marine Biologist, Tom made the switch to plants and orchids in his late 20s while living in Hawaii. Since then he has worked with orchids at the New York Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden and an extensive private collection at Greentree Estate in Long Island. Tom was also the floor manager at the New York International Orchid Show for many years during this period. For the last 6 years, Tom has contributed two columns each month for ORCHIDs magazine and is developing a new book based on those writings. Tom travels frequently around the US and internationally making presentations to diverse audiences, from scientists to the general public, about orchid ecology, pollination biology, and strategies for orchid conservation. He is passionate about seeking collaboration between the worlds of Botanic Gardens, the hobbyist community, commercial growers and scientists to work together toward the goal of protecting orchids and their habitats. Currently working on a project to coordinate and centralize North American orchid conservation efforts, Tom hopes to extend the influence to other parts of the world where orchids are imperiled. The subject of his talk will be Orchid Innovations of the Taiwanese.

Subject: AOS Corner - January 2013 From: Lynn Fuller [ [email protected] ] AOS has gone digital. Starting with the January issue, Orchids is available for download to your computer, smart phone, pad or tablet. All you need is a valid email address connected to your membership and your personal login. If you have explored the members only section of the AOS website, you are all set! If not, there are instructions on the site how to set up your own account. The Spring Trustees and members’ meeting (including the annual elections) will be held in tandem with the San Diego Orchid Show in San Diego, California, March 21-23 at the Scottish Rite Temple. Meeting will be held between the Sheraton Mission Valley Hotel and the Show. More information and registration will be available on the AOS website soon. The AOS proxy card for the annual elections was included in the January issue of Orchids. If you are not planning to attend the meeting in San Diego in March, please return your vote to AOS Headquarters at your earliest convenience so your vote may be counted at that meeting. An important part of membership is the privilege of voting. The Affiliated Societies Committee would like your tips, suggestions and/or ideas on how you grow your societies’ membership and methods you have to keep your society’s members active and engaged. Please send them to the [email protected] email address and we will organize and catalogue them on the Affiliated Societies section of the AOS website so we can all share your successes. Best wishes and happy growing for 2013, Lynn Fuller, Chair American Orchid Society (AOS), Affiliated Societies Committee
