JANUARY 2015 BOARD REPORT In the December newsletter, we undertook to keep Members informed about two issues: progress on the proposed new ferry crossing and track development on Hole No. 5 and the Clubhouse refurbishment. It is unlikely that we will make much progress on this latter issue until the first part of 2015, but we have had further meetings regarding the track and Members may have noticed that work is currently being done by Queenstown Trails Trust to improve the track around the 5th green and down to the willow trees. We believe that improved signage will play a large part in developing a solution to the potential problems created by increased usage and we are working on some specific recommendations. Members are asked to continue to be vigilant on the tees and along the track and to show patience and courtesy to all users. Please report any incidents to the Pro Shop and we welcome any feedback about track usage issues generally. Financial Key points from the figures below are as follows: - Income for November is slightly behind both Budget and Last Year mainly due to timing of Members’ subscriptions. All the other major trading lines are either ahead of, or similar to, Budget. YTD Income is ahead of Budget and similar to Last Year. - Expenses for November are down against Budget and Last Year. YTD Expenses are below Budget but above Last Year, reflecting increased spending on the Course. - November and YTD Trading results are tracking well against Budget but we are still behind our position at the same time last year.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT I hope you are all enjoying the summer golf - it's taken a while for the warm weather to get here, but at last it has arrived. Long may it continue! Our final club mixed events played in December included the Triangular (Queenstown vs Arrowtown vs Kingston), and the trophy was taken out this year by Arrowtown, with Queenstown a close second. Our closing day event, the Lindsay Trophy for 4BBB mixed pair was won by the combined pairing of Heather Atkinson and Alec Mcburney. At 94 years old, Alec is clearly determined to still show us young pups a thing or two. I should also mention that Heather took out the top stableford of 39 in the Triangular field the week before great finish to the year, Heather and Alec! The match room will take a well-deserved break over the next few weeks, and normal service will be resumed for the Men’s January Medal on Sat the 17th of January. Till then, my thanks to our pros who do a fabulous job running the club summer golf fields. January will be a big month for our club. First, there is the Altrusa tournament on the 11th. Then our Centennial Celebrations will kick off over the three days of Fri 30th, Sat 31st and Sun 1st Feb. The program of events has been emailed to you, and is also on our website. I hope you will all be able to participate in celebrating the hard work and foresight of those who have built the Queenstown Golf Club into what is in today. And - oh yes! Have some fun too! Please do ensure you make your bookings for those events that you will participate in. BMW 2015 NZ OPEN One local golfer will win a place in the NZ Open field and it will not be through the order of merit or qualifying. The organisers of the NZ Open announced recently that they were running a competition for a place in the amateur field in the Open. A special golf day will take place, sponsored by Michael Hill, at various golf clubs through the Queenstown Lakes and Cromwell areas. Golfers who play at Arrowtown, Queenstown, Wanaka, Cromwell, Kingston and Glenorchy courses on February 21 2015 (the start of our club champs) will go into a draw to win a golf experience of a lifetime. The player can be male or female. Each club can decide who plays, although the winner must have a registered handicap index with New Zealand Golf of no more than 18 (men) and 20 (women). The prize, including a minimum of two days’ play at The Hills and Millbrook courses alongside a professional, will be drawn across all six clubs on competition day. Please take care over the holidays, Brent Carlsson – Club President

You will be rewarded with points for entering and/or excelling in all Saturday competitions as well as other special events throughout the year. At the end of each month, top of the leader-board will receive use of the top dog carpark for the following month. The Players’ committee envisages that all future team selections (Inter-club, Pennants etc) will be based on this leader-board and that those on the leader-board will be given priority for selection.

AMBASSADOR TROPHY (ECLECTIC) January medal day will also mark the start of the Ambassador Trophy Eclectic competition for the year. Over the last 3 years, this competition was calculated on the best nett per hole over the 12 monthly medal rounds (see 2014 results below). Starting in January 2015, the competition will change slightly and will be based on your best gross per hole over the 12 monthly medal rounds minus your course handicap. This makes it easier for dot golf (and the pro shop!) to calculate scores and to monitor the leader-board.

REPRESENTATIVE GOLF Otago No 2 Jamie Anstiss blitzed the field of Otago age-group representatives in the Island Park Junior Open in Dunedin recently. He carded a 6-under 66 around the tricky Waldronville course in fine but cool conditions to claim the title by five shots. The result means, with one event remaining, Jamie lies in second place on the Greg Turner order of merit but inches closer to leader Inia Logan. Jamie, along with last year’s QGC senior club champ Mark Brooks also recently helped Otago secure 2nd place in the National Inter-provincial champs. Mark Brooks scored the only Otago win as the team lost the final to Waikato 4/1 in Hamilton. Congratulations to Jamie and Mark on representing the club on the national golfing scene. I hope you are all enjoying the festive season and managing to get some practice in before the coming year. Peter Waaka - Men’s Club Captain

WOMEN’S REPORT With Xmas now behind us, it is now time to turn our attention to the beginning of our Golf calendar. There is now a notice on the board downstairs for entries into the Club Championships. These championships, as last year, will get underway early in the new calendar year. There will not be any qualifying rounds for this competition, but will be based on your handicap. I encourage all of you to enter, including our higher handicappers, as this past year we did not have any competitors in the Bronze III division. You have all over the summer golf period to get your entry in. We now have a full field for our Mount Michael Ladies Classic, but we do have a waiting list, so if you are still thinking about entering, I would suggest that you contact the club immediately and get your name down on that waiting list. You never know, you may still get into the field. Ladies opening day for 2015 is on the 27th January with a 123 stableford. For the Saturday Players you will open on the 24th January. We will be running a Tuesday stableford up until opening day. On Friday the 30th January 2015 marks the beginning of the 100 Year Celebrations of our Golf Club, with a 9 hole 2 person Ambrose to be held at the Frankton Golf Centre with a 12noon rolling start. An informal cocktail evening will be held at the Queenstown Golf club in the evening from 7.30pm. On Saturday 31st January there will be a 4BBB Stableford, at the Queenstown Golf Club, 7am rolling start. In the evening there will be the Centenary Buffet Dinner at the Queenstown Golf Course. On Sunday the 1st February marks the end of our celebrations, with a Mixed Canadian Foursome, 7am rolling start followed by a BBQ dinner and Anderson Trophy Prize-giving commencing at 7.30pm. The Centenary is a very special occasion for our club, so ring now and book all the events you wish to take part in. Until then enjoy the Xmas and New Year holidays. Have a Happy and Safe New Year's Eve. Marie Buchanan - Women’s Club Captain

RUB OF THE GREEN This season has been a mixed bag, with most types of weather hitting us at one stage or another. At the moment it is raining which will help us out in a big way. Over the last couple of weeks we have had one, sometimes two guys out moving hoses around and generally trying to keep the course green. There has been a lot of feedback about the rough this year. To be honest this happens most years, and it is always at the same time and about the same areas. Last year we didn’t have a lot of rough due to a dry spring, so with a wet spring this year there was of course a lot more grass around. This has been discussed a lot at many different levels, and we have put together a plan to try and mitigate the effects of thick rough when it happens again. This plan has to be reasonably flexible, but you can be assured it will cost money. John and I have been putting together a work plan to cover the next couple of years. This is mainly just tidy up work like planting and removing trees, but there is also a lot of other work been done that is not so obvious but will add to the finished product. We also have ongoing work planned like tee refurbishment, but this is slow work at the moment as we try and get a lot of other work done. Ray, Scott, Shaun, Trevor and myself would like to wish all of the members and their families a happy and prosperous new year. We will be doing our best to make sure you enjoy your golf on this course, so if something doesn’t suit you or make you unhappy, it not deliberate on our part. Sometime there is a reason why the grass grows more in a particular area, or why the greens are a little slow after coring. Happy New Year. Ian Douglas – Head Green Keeper

RULE OF THE MONTH SPEED OF PLAY YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES Very few golfers would admit to being slow players but we can all do our bit to play a little bit faster. Keep up with the group in front 

Do not worry about the group behind – keep up with the group in front:

If you feel that your group is falling behind take responsibility and bring this to the attention of the other players in your group.

React positively to the situation.

If your group is behind there is no need to run but try to catch up quickly.

If you lose a clear hole and are delaying the group behind invite the group behind to play through.

If there is no group in front of you and you are delaying the group behind invite the group behind to play through.

Be ready to play When it is not your turn to play use your time wisely to prepare so that when it is your turn you are ready to play: 

Put your glove on, check your yardage, assess the wind strength and direction.

Decide on the type of shot that you are going to play.

Select your club.

When it is your turn to play, play promptly: 

Decide on the shot and execute it.

You only need one practice swing.

You do not need to waggle the club back and forth and round about again and again.

At the putting green: 

Assess your line, repair pitch-marks on the green and remove loose impediments while others are playing.

It is not necessary to look at your line from every angle.

You do not need to have an alignment mark on your golf ball and ensure that it is perfectly aligned to the hole before every putt.

Move off the green as soon as all players in your group have holed out and mark score cards at or on the way to the next tee.

Speed up your exit by positioning your bags on the way to the next tee.

If each player took a few seconds off their pre-shot routine then the cumulative effect would be very significant.
