Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Of Many Things… I believe it is fair to say that a certain spirit of callous disregard for human life has grown up in our American culture over recent years. The annual March for Life, which will take place this week in Washington DC, occurs each year at this time to mark the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision of the U.S. Supreme Court legalizing abortion. However, in keeping with our Catholic “seamless garment” approach to life issues, we recognize that direct assaults on human life take place not only through abortion, but also through capital punishment, the growth of senseless violence in our nation, escalating militarism, racism, harsh attitudes toward immigrants, and the skewed accumulation of wealth and life-sustaining resources. This year we are more aware especially of the harsh and disrespectful rhetoric particularly in our public and political conversation that clearly reflects this callous disregard for human life. This is what St. John Paul II called “the culture of death” because of the way such attitudes contribute to the undermining of goodness and life in our nation and our world. The March for Life and the various prayer vigils held here at Sacred Heart and in other faith communities are two ways in which we as people of good will and Catholic faith respond to this corrosive factor in our nation. Our Catholic faith calls us to bring the perspective of the Gospel of Jesus and Catholic Social Teaching to bear in public through respectful and constructive dialogue as well as through our participation in the political process especially in our personal conversations and in our voting. We seek to propose rather than impose our beliefs on the larger community demonstrating our belief in the value and dignity of all human life by our dedication to mutual respect and dialogue in doing so. By these various means, our faith calls us to promote what we are for more than what we oppose. We believe that all people share human dignity as children of the one God, created by that one God. We believe as our founders stated so eloquently that all people are endowed by their Creator with “certain inalienable rights among which are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” We all speak so often about the offensive tone of our culture and what we see as the growth of the “culture of death” in our nation. This realization reminds us that we need to be careful that our passion for human life and dignity does not draw us into harsh and especially violent attitudes, words and deeds. Gandhi once proposed, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” I find this important advice as we as a nation address the callous disregard for human life and mutual respect that we recognize among us. May we be an example of what we desire for our nation! May God bless us, our newly-elected leaders and our nation! Father Joe

He was recently given “faculties” (privileges) from the local diocese to preach and serve as a deacon and he is doing so each month at the local parish they have joined, which, coco-incidentally, is also “Sacred Heart Church.” On Saturday, January 14th , Chuck and Dorne celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. If anyone wishes to drop them a note, their address is 63 Walelu Court, Brevard NC 28712. I am sure they would appreciate an encouraging note. Father Joe
