PAVER PRODUCT SUPPORT

ENSURING UPTIME … THE CONSTANT FOCUS

Pavers are high-maintenance machines. Even the most reliable paver needs to be serviced annually to deal with the inevitable wear and tear that comes from handling abrasive materials. Winter, when pavers often sit idle, is an excellent time to perform a thorough maintenance routine on a paver, getting it ready for a working season free of downtime. Columbus Equipment Company has extensive knowledge and experience working on pavers, with at least one paver specialist working in each of the company's branches. Technicians have been trained by several paving and roller manufacturers and receive additional training each year to stay on top of new developments. Additionally, a parts department that catalogs an comprehensive inventory of paver parts is key in successfully maintaining your machine.

“A PAVER THAT'S NOT WORKING IS NOT MAKING MONEY. THAT'S WHY I HIGHLY RECOMMEND AN ANNUAL AUDIT. ” Chuck Amnah; Paving Division Product Support Specialist, Columbus Equipment Company

Columbus Equipment Company has proudly served paving customers since 1953. Chuck Amnah (above) has been a central part of this effort for the past 21 years.

For decades, customers have entrusted their paving equipment with Columbus Equipment Company. To make it even easier for customers, the company recently assigned Chuck Amnah as product support specialist for the Paving Division. As many of you know, Chuck has served Columbus Equipment customers for over 24 years, and he has specialized in paver repair for 21 of those years. If there's a problem a paver can develop, Chuck has seen it … and fixed it. In the new position, Chuck will have companywide oversight on paver-related issues. “Whether someone needs a part number or schematic, has warranty problems or wants advice on repair issues, I'll make sure things are taken care of,” he said. He will work with customers, technicians and product support representatives to make sure paving customers experience as little downtime as possible. This winter, Amnah will conduct paver audits with the product support reps at each of the branches. During the audit, key components such as material handling bearings, auger segments and flight chains are inspected. Wear pieces are evaluated, including ultrasonic measurements of floor plate and screed plate thickness. “A paver audit gives you an outline of what needs to be repaired. Whether you do your own repairs or have Columbus Equipment do them, the paver audit is your best starting point for getting your paver ready for spring,” he said. Schedule your paver audit through your branch PSR. The audit can be performed in the field or at the shop. “A paver that's not working is not making money. That's why I highly recommend an annual audit,” Amnah added.

New Dynapac Tier 4 F1000 Paver: CUSTOMER INPUT AND EMISSIONS REDUCTION DRIVE DEVELOPMENTS Dynapac's new Tier 4 version of the F1000 paver retains the qualities that make the Dynapac a reliable, high-performing machine and features additions that increase ease-of-operation and ease-of-maintenance. Production of the new machine will begin in April 2012 at Dynapac's factory in Garland, Texas, according to Ryan Gaida, Dynapac's product manager for U.S. pavers, as he shared insight into the new machine's development exclusively with Columbus Equipment Company customers.

New features include: Cummins Tier 4 Engine

The new powerplant offers the same power ratings as the current F1000—220 hp at 2000 rpm and 230 hp at 1800 rpm. To meet Tier 4 regulations, the engine has an exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel particulate filter. The new Tier 4 engine does not affect the operation of the paver, Gaida noted. The Tier 4 engine tested in the F1000 utilizes passive regeneration to control diesel particulates. The only difference noticeable to the

operator should be the Tier 4 display functions and safety measures added to the consoles.

THE NEW POWERPLANT OFFERS THE SAME POWER RATINGS AS THE CURRENT F1000—220 HP AT 2000 RPM AND 230 HP AT 1800 RPM. “We've also kept excellent visibility around the paver and the low deck height,” he added. “We listened to customers' requests and made additional improvements around the paver.”

Feeder Control System Another key change is in the feeder control system, which will allow independent control of the left- and right-hand feeders. This allows the operator to turn one system on manual and leave the other in automatic mode when coming up to a manhole or end of a pass where material needs to be turned off on one side of the paver.

DYNAPAC TIER 4 F1000 Onsite With The Shelly Company The new Dynapac Tier 4 F1000 was recently put through its paces by The Shelly Company on a two-day project in Columbus, Ohio. The crew used 301 and a Type 2 mix on the job. “The F1000 did well really with both mixes and did what we wanted with no problems,” said Mike Wiley, foreman for The Shelly Company paving crew. “The new Cummins Tier 4 engine had plenty of power.” “The Dynapac compared favorably with the paver we normally use. The machine is noticeably quieter and the low deck height allowed the screed man good visibility,” added Wiley. The crew commented on the new independent controls to the right- and lefthand feeders. “When we approached the end, we were able to shut off the drag chains and just run the augers to keep running the material out, which reduces cleanup,” said Wiley.

Other changes include improving the visibility of the consoles and improving access to the motor, planetary and undercarriage components.

“AT LOWER OPERATING LOADS, YOU'LL SEE A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN PAVER NOISE LEVELS. Ryan Gaida; U.S. Paver Product Manager, Dynapac

In many ways, however, the story of the Tier 4 paver is what's not changing, added Gaida, who was project manager for the F1000 redesign. “We have the same great auger system, the same robust, reliable undercarriage system, and a very efficient drive control system. By maintaining a robust system that minimizes downtime, operators and technicians are ensured of having a reliable system that optimizes productivity.”

Hydraulic and Auger System Improvements

Dynapac also fine-tuned various systems to increase efficiency and/or accessibility. On the hydraulic system, for example, a new larger filter has been added to extend filter life, improved the hose routing and modified the position of components to improve access to them. There was a small change to Dynapac's exclusive outboard drive auger system. Hoses were rerouted to reduce the need for hose extensions when auger extensions are used, Gaida said. “We did that without affecting the visibility around our auger system.”

Reduced Noise Levels For operators, the most noticeable improvement will be lower noise levels. Dynapac has cut noise from two different sources—engine noise out of the exhaust and fan noise. The paver features a new on-demand, hydraulicdriven fan that is significantly quieter, Gaida noted. “At lower operating loads, you'll see a significant decrease in paver noise levels. Most times, you operate at 60 or 70 percent horsepower, so operators should see a significant decrease in noise.” Dynapac isn't done with noise reduction yet; the company will further test fan designs before production begins, seeking additional noise level reductions.
