Wine Tasting

Join your Tri Delta sisters for an evening of wine tasting on Thursday, December 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Tallula Restaurant, 2761 Washington Boulevard (at the corner of North Pershing Drive), Arlington, VA. Bring along your significant other, friends and out-of-town guests! We will sample four wines and light appetizers. You will also be able to purchase the wines you try at the restaurant throughout the evening! There is a $28 per person charge for this event. Your payment is needed to secure your place. Please RSVP by Wednesday, November 28 by making an online payment at http://www.novatridelta.org/upcoming_events.htm or mailing your check made out to Delta Delta Delta to Katie Schofield, 4304 North Pershing Drive #3, Arlington, Va. 22203. Space is limited, so RSVP today! Tallula is Metro accessible (Orange line - Clarendon). There is parking in the restaurant’s parking lot, the Country Club Cleaners parking lot on North Pershing Drive, as well as on the street. Make a night of it and have dinner at Tallula or one of the many restaurants in the Clarendon area, do some holiday shopping and, most importantly, spend a couple hours with your sisters. Please contact Katie Schofield at (703) 969-5127 or [email protected] with any questions.

Etiquette Tip Remember all of the fun social development presentations at college regarding etiquette? In case you don’t, we wanted to bring back some of the most useful tips. Look for a new one in each newsletter! The meaning of RSVP: The term RSVP comes from the French expression “respondez s’il vous plait,” which means “please respond.” If RSVP is written on an invitation it means the invited guest must tell the host whether or not they plan to attend the party. It does not mean respond only if you’re coming, nor does it mean respond only if you’re not coming (the expression “regrets only” is reserved for that case). It means the hostess needs a definite head count for the planned event by the date specified on the invitation. So whether it’s a wedding invitation, an evite to lunch or the most casual of events, if you see RSVP on an invitation, please respond promptly to the hostess! - Adapted from Donna Pilato, About.com: Entertaining

Tri Delta Spotlight An Interview with Priscilla Urner

Priscilla Urner is a Golden Circle member of our chapter. For Priscilla, the best part of being a chapter member is keeping in touch and maintaining close friendships with her Tri Delta sisters. When asked about her life, Priscilla remarked, “I have had a wonderful life. I may not have lived according to the book, but I have enjoyed every minute of it -- good, bad, and indifferent.” What was your childhood like? I was born on April 20, 1918, in Boston, Massachusetts. I grew up during the Great Depression. Everyone was short on food and clothing. I remember seeing people begging on street corners in Boston. My father made oatmeal for breakfast every morning because oatmeal was filling. I got so tired of oatmeal that I could not stand to eat it for many years. Where did you go to college? I attended Boston University from 1935 to 1939 during World War II. I loved college. I studied German, even though I can’t remember any of it now. I worked forty hours per week to put myself through college. Don’t ask me how I did it, but I did. My grades were not what I expected, but they were okay. Betty Mitchell was my best friend from high school and one year older than me. She joined Tri Delta, so I wanted to join. I eventually served as Chapter President. I was very active and served as the head of the international students at Boston University. The President of Boston University once told me, “Priscilla, you may not have received the best grades, but you really contributed to the activities.” Did you know Sarah Ida Shaw? I never met her, but my mother knew her. Sarah would call new chapter members’ parents and welcome them to Tri Delta. My parents became good friends with Sarah; they would take her for rides. Do you have any unique memories of World War II? Yes, I overheard an international student speaking with his German parents in Africa. The student did not know that I could understand German, but he was discussing the situation in Africa with his parents. At the time, the United States was very active in Africa. I knew the information might be of interest, and I translated and passed the information to the CIA. Otherwise, on V Day, I watched people yell and celebrate in the streets of New York City. Television was brand new, and we could watch the big events in New York even though we were in Boston. What did you do after college? I worked all sorts of odd jobs. I served as a demonstrator for a department store; I could tie a man’s tie with one hand! I called square dances and taught folk and ballroom dancing. I also worked as a Recreation and Parks professional in Boston. Ultimately, the federal extension service hired me to serve as a Recreation and Parks Specialist in New Hampshire. I needed to learn how to drive, and a taxicab driver taught me. When I could start the car on an icy upward slope, he told me that I had earned my driver’s license. As a Recreation and Parks Specialist, I traveled 2,000 miles per month during the winter and summer. In the winter, I would get stuck sometimes until the cops arrived to help me out. I always kept a sleeping bag in the car, just in case I got stuck and had to sleep overnight in the car. How did you meet your husband? The President of the University of New Hampshire held a special event to welcome new faculty members. Don Urner was a new faculty member, and I tried to introduce him to another girl. I had no idea that Don was interested in me. However, at this event, I announced that I had room in my car to take someone with me to an upcoming convention. Don piped up that he would like to go. Later on, Don and I ran into each other again by surprise at a Christian Scientist church in Dover, NH. Not very many people were Christian Scientists, so things took off for us after that. What did you and Don do next? Don joined the CIA and served for twenty-five years. When we first moved to Washington, D.C., Mclean was just a crossroads. We lived for several years in Okinawa, Japan. After Okinawa, we returned to Washington, D.C. Don and I were married for fifty-four years before he passed. We have two daughters. Heidi is my oldest daughter, and she lives in Reston, Virginia. Laurel Melody is my youngest daughter, and she lives in Tennessee. I have two granddaughters from Heidi. Do you have any advice for your younger Tri Delta sisters? Stay with it! Delta Delta Delta is wonderful! Being a sister in Tri Delta does a lot for you, and you can do a lot for Tri Delta.

Panhellenic News Δ Please join us in supporting Juvenile Diabetes by wrapping gifts at the Pentagon City Mall on Sunday, December

16th. We have the 10 am to 11 am shift and will plan to do lunch (and go shopping!) afterwards. Tri Delta needs at least 6 volunteers for our shift.

Δ We’ve already sold 18 tickets, but since we are in charge of the play this year, we want to keep raising that number! This year’s

play is a musical, “Secret Garden”, which will be held March 11, 2008 at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. Hors d’oeuvres will start at 7:30 pm. The cost is $20 and all proceeds benefit the Northern Virginia Alumnae Panhellenic Association scholarship fund. Stay tuned for more information on the scholarships and we’ll advise when the application forms are posted online. To sign up for the gift wrapping, buy a play ticket, or for more information on Panhellenic events, please contact Sandra Kilburn at [email protected] or Sandy Michaels at [email protected].
