APRIL DEMONSTRATION - BONNY LEIBOWITZ

UNVEILING THE MYSTERY OF ENCAUSTIC Encaustic wax is an ancient art form. There are different products to use, and different ways to use them. It’s a medium that can be used to build dimension. It can be worked on top of paper; you can scrape though layers, use stencils and collage, create texture. You can also create realistic imagery. Oil paint can be used to color the medium; colored mediums are also available. Acrylic paint cannot be used with it. Bonny showed us a variety of techniques: fusing with a heater, making a grid by applying tape. You can get variations of color by layering; after cooling the layers, they can be scraped into. You can also take one little area, and put in one color; it creates something interesting. You can use paper or tape on your own stencil. By using a hot box, wax can be scraped off the stencil. Imagery can be made a with a tool. There are ceramic tools and pigment sticks ; the latter you can apply by fingertips to pictures. Also scrape back to show layers. Other things can be added, such as rice paper, decorated tissue paper and fabrics such as linen or polyester.

Bonny Leibowitz has been an influential participant of the Dallas art community since the late '80s when she moved to Dallas. The artist studied at Temple University's Tyler College of Art and has enjoyed solo exhibitions in Dallas, Laguna Beach, Palm Springs, Chicago, Hawaii and Santa Fe along with a solo exhibition at the Museum of Art at Midwestern State University, Wichita Falls. She has been interviewed for numerous publications and blogs such as Luxe Magazine and Papercity and has had critical reviews on her work by Todd Camplin in ModernDallas.net. 2015 50+ SHOW BEST OF SHOW

Juror’s Remarks I enjoyed judging the show, and I must say that selecting the winners was a very hard decision. My overall process for selecting the winners ultimately came down to the use of color harmony in the painting, compositions and the feeling the painting evoked in me. I also looked for playfulness and confidence within Christie Campo the artwork. The best art is always the art where there is a passion and that passion can be felt by the viewer. What a great selection of art! Art! And. t was an honor to judge the show.

RCAS Helps Provide Fun at Spring Fling! Members of RCAS collaborated with members of the Richland Park HOA to provide fun for the children attending Spring Fling on April 18th from 5-9 PM. Members, including Pete Quaid, Marianne Phelps, Barbara McNutt, John Cheney and Pat Fekete helped make wire sculpture jewelry, animals, glasses, and other fun items with the children at the Richland Park Elementary School parking lot. About 200 people attended the event.

“D Rings” Now Required On All Artwork for All Shows "The RCAS Board voted this spring to require "D" ring hangers for the wire in all our future shows or displays beginning with the Huffhines display in March, 2015. The reason being paintings displayed in the Regional Show at the Eisemann Center not hang by the wire but with hooks. Our site for the Regional Show is always the Eisemann and therefore is required to have "D" ring hangers. Huffhines Recreation Center also uses hooks. For consistent rules in all the shows we established this requirement. There are at least 2 shapes of these hangers - a Uppercase D, and a triangle shape. If you have concerns or questions please address them to the Board and we will be in contact."

It’s that time again TIME TO RENEW YOUR RCAS MEMBERSHIP The dues are $35. You can join online and pay online or print a form from the website and send to our membership chair Rosalinda Stone 10823 Sinclair Ave. Dallas, TX 75218 The address is on the membership form. Message from the President — Pat Fekete May brings us to the close of another year. We have had some great programs and shows this year. I want each of you to know what a tremendous job that RCAS’s Officers, Committee Chairs, and all other volunteers have done this year. You have made a real difference. When you are a part of an all -volunteer organization, you need to find ways that you can help. You have. We still have two openings for chairs for next year. One requires computer skills to send information to the press. The other is organizing the folks to bring cookies. Let me know if you will volunteer for either position at [email protected]. Thanks in advance. I hope you have a great summer and will come back next fall relaxed and refreshed….and with lots of wonderful paintings.
