The Foundation’s historical objectives in Lübeck are:

Jugendherbergen und -treffs, Alten- und Pfl egeheimen, Gemeinschaftshäusern und Sportanlagen jeglicher Art sowie von freien Trägern, die in der Jugend-, Migranten- und Sozialbetreuung tätig sind, von öffentlichen und privaten kulturellen Einrichtungen und Veranstaltungen sowie von Lübecker Hochschulen, von Lübecker Schulen, Kindergärten, gemeinnützigen Sportvereinen und Jugendverbänden, bei sozialer Not in Einzelfällen sowie durch Unterstützung von Einrichtungen, die sich hilfsbedürftiger Mitbürger annehmen.



Seit 1950 konnte die Possehl-Stiftung über 305 Mio. Euro für ihre fünf Stiftungszwecke bereitstellen.

Editorial

Im Mai 1919 wurde die Possehl-Stiftung per Senatsdekret genehmigt und konnte ihre Aktivitäten aufnehmen. Sie ist fest in Lübeck verwurzelt und fester Bestandteil der städtischen, hanseatisch geprägten Zivilgesellschaft. Die Stiftung hat In­ flation, Krieg, Wirtschaftskrisen, politische und gesellschaft­ liche Umbrüche überdauert. Emil Possehl war neben anderen Persönlichkeiten wie Bosch, Thyssen oder Krupp ein typischer Großindustrieller seiner Zeit. Da die Ehe mit seiner Frau, der Schauspielerin Wilhelmine Possehl, kinderlos blieb, entschied er sich, sein Unternehmen der Possehl-Stiftung als alleiniger Eigentümerin zu vermachen. In seinem Testament wird die Liebe zu seiner Heimatstadt als Antrieb hierfür formuliert. Si­ cher war es auch sein Wunsch, den Fortbestand der von ihm zu ungeheurer Größe angewachsenen Unternehmensgruppe sicherzustellen. Die von ihm festgelegte Struktur hat bis heute Bestand: Unternehmen und Stiftung florieren gleichermaßen.

The Possehl Foundation was authorised by a Lübeck State Senate decree of May of 1919, thus becoming able to start its activities at that time. It is firmly rooted in Lübeck, and is a fixed component of the City’s hanseatically shaped civil society. The Foundation has survived inflation, war and economic crises as well as political and social upheavals. The Founder, Emil Possehl, was a typical major industrialist of his time together with other personalities like Bosch, Thyssen and Krupp. As his marriage to the actress Wilhelmine Possehl remained without issue, he decided to gift his company to the Possehl Foundation as the sole owner. His last will and testament formulates his love for his native city as the driving force for this decision. It was certainly also his wish to ensure the continued existence of his group of companies, which under his management had grown to enormous proportions. The structure defined by Possehl continues in effect to this day: both the companies and the Foundation continue to flourish. The corporate earnings of the commercial enterprises, which are part of the parent company L. Possehl & Co. mbH, flow into the Possehl Foundation. The Foundation distributes a part of these profits in aid of that which is “good and beautiful in

Pos­ sehl & Co. mbH gehören, stehen der Possehl-Stiftung zu für das „Gute und Schöne in Lübeck“, wie Emil Possehl es in sei­ nem Testament formulierte. Ein Teil wird wieder in die Un­ ternehmensgruppe investiert, damit die Firmen wie auch die Stiftung sich langfristig und solide weiterentwickeln können. Doch wie genau arbeitet die Stiftung? Wer trifft Entscheidun­ gen? Warum und wie tun wir das, was wir tun? Nach außen ver­ treten wird die Possehl-Stiftung von ihrem Vorsitzenden und seinem Stellvertreter. Der sechsköpfige Arbeitsausschuss führt die laufenden Geschäfte der Stiftung, berät Anträge vor und unterbreitet dem Stiftungsvorstand einen Entscheidungsvor­ schlag. Dem Stiftungsvorstand gehörten 17 Personen an. Emil Possehl hatte festgelegt: „Die Vorstandsmitglieder sind dem Kreise der angesehenen Lübecker Bürger zu entnehmen, ins­ besondere den Mitgliedern des Senats, der Behörden, der Kaufmannschaft, der Geistlichkeit, der Lehrerschaft, der Anwalt­ schaft und der sonstigen freien Berufe.“ Heute ist das gesellschaftliche Ansehen sicher kein qualifizier­ tes Aufnahmekriterium, aber Vertreter der von Emil Possehl genannten Berufsstände finden sich im Stiftungsvorstand. Damals wie heute finden die Vorstandssitzungen einmal im Monat statt. Und bis heute arbeitet der Stiftungsvorstand ehrenamtlich­. In den ersten sieben Jahrzehnten ihres Bestehens hat die Possehl-Stiftung meist über wenige Anträge im Jahr beraten; heute werden bis zu 700 Anträge im Jahr gestellt. Der Arbeits­

Lübeck”, as Emil Possehl stipulated in his will. A portion is reinvested in the Group, so that both the companies and the Foundation can develop on a solid basis over the long term. But, how exactly does the Foundation work? Who makes the decisions? Why and how do we do what we do? To the outside world, the Possehl Foundation is represented by its Chairman and his Deputy. The six-member Working Committee manages the ongoing business of the Foundation, discusses applications and submits decision proposals to the Board. The Foundation’s Board consists of 17 people. Emil Possehl had stipulated the following: “The Members of the Board shall be selected from among the circle of respected citizens of Lübeck, more particularly from the members of the Senate, the civil service, the merchants, the clergy, the teaching bodies, lawyers and the members of other liberal professions.” Today, social standing is certainly not a qualifying inclusion criterion, but representatives of the professional bodies mentioned by Emil Possehl can also nowadays be found on the Foundation’s Board. Both then and now, Board meetings take place once a month. And, both then as now, the Members of the Board discharge their duties on a volunteer basis. In the first seven decades of its existence, the Possehl Foundation mostly heard only a few applications per year;

aufwand ist in den letzten Jahren enorm gestiegen, so dass die Stiftung in ihrem Büro eine Vollzeitkraft und vier Teilzeitkräfte beschäftigt, die einen reibungslosen Ablauf sicherstellen. Stellt man diesen Aufwand jedoch den derzeit zugesagten Mitteln von € 18 Mio. gegenüber, lässt sich die personelle Ausstattung der Stiftung durchaus als schlank und effizient bezeichnen. Sie ist heute keine reine Förderstiftung mehr. Emil Possehl selbst hatte verfügt: „Die Stiftung soll weiter die erforderlichen Geldmittel zur Verfügung stellen für von der Stiftung selbst­ gegründeter, neuer Unternehmungen“. Die Possehl-Stiftung ist Gesellschafterin dreier gemeinnütziger GmbHs: 2015 wur­ de das Europäische Hansemuseum eröffnet; und seit 2006 betreibt die Stiftung das TheaterFigurenMuseum und das Figuren­theater Lübeck. Insgesamt 150.000 Besucher ziehen die drei Einrichtungen an. Alle Häuser erhalten Betriebskos­ tenzuschüsse und werden projektbezogen in ihrer Arbeit ge­ fördert. Ein gesonderter Abschnitt berichtet im Jahrbuch über diese Gesellschaften. Jedes Jahr dankt die Possehl-Stiftung an dieser Stelle der Un­ ternehmensgruppe L. Possehl & Co. mbH und allen ihren Mit­ arbeiterInnen für die geleistete Arbeit, die Voraussetzung für unsere Fördertätigkeit ist. Die Wiederholung dieses Dankes schmälert seine Bedeutung in keiner Weise. Die Kontinuität, das behutsame, aber zielstrebige Wachstum der Unterneh­ mensgruppe legen die Grundlage für die praktische Umset­ zung des Stifterwillens. Hierfür dankt der Stiftungsvorstand dem Unternehmensvorstand mit großem Nachdruck.

today, up to 700 applications are examined every year. The amount of work necessary to process all these applications has enormously grown over the last few years, so that now the Foundation keeps one full-time and four part-time employees busy in its offices to ensure smooth workflows. However, if one compares this amount of time and effort with the currently approved funds of € 18 million, the Foundation’s personnel endowment can certainly be described as being lean and efficient. However, the Possehl Foundation is today no longer a pure grant-making foundation. Emil Possehl himself had stipulated the following: “The Foundation shall continue to provide the necessary monetary means for new business undertakings established by the Foundation itself”. These days, it is a member in three limited companies active in the charitable and public service area: the European Hansemuseum was opened in 2015, and since 2006 the Foundation has been operating the TheaterFigureMuseum and the Figure Theater Lübeck. These three organisations attract 150,000 visitors per year. Each of them receives contributions towards its operating costs as well as project relevant funding. These companies’ activities are described in a separate chapter of this Yearbook. Every year, the Possehl Foundation uses this vehicle to thank the L. Possehl & Co. mbH group of companies and all its employees for their valuable work, which is the sine qua non for our sponsoring activities. Reiterating the expression of our gratitude in no way reduces its meaningfulness. The continuity, the careful but goal oriented growth of the Group endows the Foundation with the wherewithal for the practical implementation of our Founder’s intentions. And for this, the Foundation’s Board once again thanks the Group Board with undiminished fervour.

Über den Fluß Stecknitz versorgten die Stecknitzfahrer in fla­ chen Salzkähnen mithilfe eines ausgeklügelten Schleusensys­ tems seit Anfang des 15. Jahrhunderts die Städte Lübeck und Lüneburg mit dem „weißen Gold“. Die Stecknitz wurde daher auch „nasse Salzstraße“ genannt. Als nach einem Ratserlass im Jahre 1844 die Gilde aufgelöst wurde, trafen sich die Stecknitz­ fahrer weiterhin im „Alten Amtshaus“ und hielten hier ihre „Kringelhöge“ ab. Dieses traditionsreiche Gelage wird bis in unserer Tage in historischer Form abgehalten und trägt die Ge­ schichte dieser alten Zunft als Ritual in die heutige Zeit weiter. Alljährlich wird zu diesem Anlass ein speziell gebrautes Bier aus Zinnkrügen getrunken und Tabak aus Tonpfeifen geraucht. Als sichtbare Zeichen auf dem vom Architekten Heinrich Hagen 1904 geplanten Gebäude zeugen die Schriftzüge auf den Giebeln und die Figuren des Portals von der Existenz der Gemeinschaft. Die Betongussfiguren des Bildhauers Wilhelm Christian Cuwie, die zwei Stecknitzfahrer mit Haken und Sta­ ken darstellen, waren abgewittert, die Köpfe zerstört. Da eine Restaurierung nicht mehr möglich war, wurden aufwändig Er­ satzfiguren angefertigt.

Seit 1261 führt diese Straße zum geografischen Mittelpunkt der Stadt. Am topographisch höchsten Punkt des Hügels der Lübecker Altstadtinsel hatten Lübecker Kaufleute im Mittelal­ ter die Marienkirche errichtet, in selbstbewusster Abgrenzung vom mächtigen Klerus. 1946 wurde die Johannisstraße nach dem Lübecker Reichstagsabgeordneten und Vorsitzenden der Lübecker Sozialdemokratischen Partei Julius Leber benannt. Er wurde 1945 im Zusammenhang mit dem Attentat auf Adolf Hitler am 20. Juli 1944 hingerichtet. In der Dr. Julius-Leber-Straße stehen heute zahlreiche Häuser unter Denkmalschutz. Bei dem sanierten Gebäude handelt es sich um ein sogenanntes Traufenhaus. Bei dieser Bauweise steht die Dachtraufe parallel zur Straße. Das Erscheinungsbild des Hauses ist von der in der 2. Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts er­ folgten Überbauung geprägt, tatsächlich lassen sich einzelne Brandwände bis ins Mittelalter zurückverfolgen. Das Haus war vor der Sanierung stark vernachlässigt und drohte zu verfal­ len. Jetzt konnte die Fassade mit den aufwändig gestalteten Zopfstilformen denkmalgerecht saniert werden.

In einem Schreiben aus dem Jahre 1912 wird eindeutig darauf hingewiesen, dass die Anbringung der Figuren und historischen Embleme als Symbole und Hinweise auf die Geschichte des Hauses, vom Bauamt der Stadt ausdrücklich angeordnet wurden. Since the early fifteenth century, the Stecknitz bargees navigated the river Stecknitz in flat bottomed salt barges following a clever lock system in order to supply the cities of Lübeck and Lüneburg with salt, the “white gold” of those days. For that reason, the Stecknitz was also called “the wet salt road”. After a council ordinance of 1844 dissolved the Guild, the Stecknitz bargees continued to meet in the “Old Guild house” and held their “Kringelhöge” over a beer. This highly traditional revelry continues to be held in its historical form to this date and brings the history of this old craft into the present as a ritual. Every year, the event is celebrated with a specially brewed beer drunk out of tin tankards and the smoking of tobacco out of clay pipes. Visible signs of the Guild’s existence can be seen in the inscriptions on the gables and in the figures of the portal as planned­ by architect Heinrich Hagen for the building designed in 1904. The poured concrete figures of sculptor Wilhelm Christian Cuwie, representing two Stecknitz bargees with their hooks and poles, were severely weathered, their heads entirely destroyed. As it was no longer­ possible to restore them, replacement figures were produced.

This street has led to the geographic centre of the City since 1261. In the Middle Ages, the City’s merchants had erected the Marienkirche (St. Mary’s Church) at the topographically highest point of the hill forming Lübeck’s Old Town Island in a self-confident delimitation from the powerful clergy. Today, many of the houses in the Dr. Julius-Leber-Straße are under monument preservation orders. This particular building is what is usually referred to as an “eaves house”, where the eaves and rain gutters, rather than the gable, run parallel to and face the street. The aspect of the house is characterised by the new façade dating from the second half of the eighteenth century, but in fact some individual fire resisting walls can be backdated to mediaeval times. Prior to restoration, the house was highly neglected and threatened to collapse. Now, the façade and its elaborate late rococo shapes can be restored according to best practices for historical monuments.

Vor der Sanierung drohte das Haus nicht nur zu verfallen, sondern es war auch ein trister Schandfleck im Straßenbild. Heute ist die Ausstrahlung freundlich, auch die historischen Elemente wie die historischen Zopfstilformen treten deutlich hervor. Sanierung der Scheune auf Gut Mönkhof Restoration of the barn on the Mönkhof Estate Die malerisch gelegene Hofanlage befindet sich am südlichen Stadtrand Lübecks. Ihre Ursprünge lassen sich bis in das 13. Jahrhundert zurückverfolgen. Ursprünglich in kirchlichem Be­ sitz wurde ein Teil des Hofes 1248 dem Heiligen Geist-Hospital geschenkt, einer von wohlhabenden Lübecker Bürgern gestif­ tete Sozialeinrichtung, und diente ihm durch Verpachtung als Einnahmequelle. Die Einordnung der Denkmalpflege von Gut Mönkhof als Kulturdenkmal bezieht sich nicht auf einzelne Gebäude sondern auf das gesamte Ensemble. Die heutige Hofanlage besteht aus mehreren Wohn- und Wirtschaftsgebäuden und befindet sich in Privatbesitz. 2015 brannte eine Scheune des Gutes gänzlich ab. Für eine denkmalgerech­ te Ausgestaltung des Wiederaufbaus kommen Brandversiche­ rungen nicht auf, so dass die Possehl-Stiftung sich an diesen Kosten beteiligt hat, damit das Gesamtbild aller geschützten Gebäude gewahrt und wieder hergestellt werden konnte.

Nach dem Großbrand am 4. Januar 2015 wurde die Scheune nach historischem Vorbild wieder aufgebaut und das bedeutsame Ensemble komplett. This picturesque farming complex is located at the southern edge of the City of Lübeck. Its origins can be traced back to the thirteenth century. While it was originally in the possession of the Church, in 1248 part of the farming complex was gifted to the Holy Ghost Hospital, a social organisation endowed by well-to-do citizens of Lübeck, and by means of leasing served as a source of income for the Hospital. The classification of the Mönkhof Estate for cultural monument maintenance purposes concerns not just individual buildings but the entire estate. Today’s farming complex consists of several dwellings and utility buildings, and is held in private hands. In 2015, a barn in the complex burnt entirely to the ground. Angebote für Flüchtlinge und Zuwanderer Range of language and professionally based studies offered for refugees and immigrants Politische Weltgeschehnisse haben einen globalen Flücht­ lingsstrom ausgelöst. Auch Lübeck ist das Ziel von vielen auf der Flucht. Diese Situation stellt eine Kommune vor enorme Herausforderungen. Bereits vorhandene Strukturen zur Inte­ gration von Zuwanderern müssen erweitert und neue Ange­ bote geschaffen und koordiniert werden. Zentrales Interesse der Possehl-Stiftung ist, dass sich diese Angebote in Lübeck ergänzen und keine bürokratielastigen Doppelstrukturen ge­ schaffen werden. Darüber hinaus liegt uns eine Stärkung des ehrenamtlichen Engagements besonders am Herzen – gerade die Flüchtlingskrise hat viele Lübecker ermutigt, sich für die Hilfesuchenden einzusetzen. Auch die Helfenden können nicht sich selbst überlassen werden und brauchen Begleitung und Unterstützung. Es freut uns, dass sich die Angebote in Lübeck­so vorbildlich ergänzen und zusammenarbeiten. Drehund Angelpunkt der Koordinierung ist die Stabstelle für Inte­ gration der Hansestadt Lübeck, die über vorhandene Angebote informiert. Das Angebot FLOW der Gemeindediakonie Lübeck richtet sich bedarfsorientiert an junge Flüchtlinge im Alter von 16 – 25 Jah­ ren: Ein auf Ehrenamt basierendes Mentoringprogramm för­ dert Kontakte zu Einheimischen und ermöglicht so eine prak­ tische Anwendung von Deutschkenntnissen. Ein Netzwerk für Traumatisierte verbessert die psychosoziale Versorgung der Flüchtlinge ergänzt von Kultur-, Sport- und Freizeitaktivitäten.

Recent worldwide political developments have set off a global refugee and migration wave. Lübeck, too, is a goal for many of these fugitives. This situation represents a set of enormous challenges for a local authority. Existing structures for the integration of immigrants need to be expanded, new options created and coordinated. The primary interest of the Possehl Foundation is to ensure that in Lübeck these options will be complementary among them and that no bureaucratic dual structures are created. In addition, we are particularly interested in strengthening the volunteer commitment, since especially the refugee crisis has encouraged many citizens of Lübeck to engage their abilities on behalf of those seeking help. The helpers, too, cannot be left to themselves, and need support and supervision. We are glad to see that the range of services offered in Lübeck complement and collaborate with one another in such an exemplary manner. The pivotal point and linchpin of this coordination is the Central Office for Integration of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, which provides information on the existing options. The FLOW option offered by the Protestant Church welfare organization Diakonie for the Lübeck Community is aimed at young refugees aged between 16 and 25 on a needs basis: a volunteer mentoring programme promotes contacts to the local population, thus enabling the practical application of the client’s knowledge of the German language. A network for traumatised victims improves their psychosocial care, supplemented by cultural, sports and leisure activities.

Die Volkshochschule ist größter Anbieter der für die Integra­ tion so zentralen Sprachkurse. Die Possehl-Stiftung ermög­ licht, dass in Lübeck nicht nur bereits anerkannte Flüchtlinge diese Deutschkurse besuchen können. Das Angebot Deutsch für alle steht allen hier Angekommenen – unabhängig von ihrem Aufenthaltsstatus – offen. Dort wo Bund und Gemein­ de für die Finanzierung der Sprachkurse nicht zuständig sind, springt die Possehl-Stiftung ein. Der Verein Sprungtuch e. V. bietet darüber hinaus einen soge­ nannten Sprach- und Kulturmittler-Pool an, denn mangelnde Sprachkenntnisse sind eine wesentliche Barriere im Prozess der Integration von Zuwanderern. Hier setzt das in einigen Kommunen langjährig entwickelte und erprobte Konzept der Sprach- und Kulturmittlung an. Es zielt auf die verbesserte Verständigung zwischen Menschen mit nicht ausreichenden Deutschkenntnissen und den Mitarbeitern von Verwaltung, Einrichtungen und Institutionen z.  B. durch Übersetzungs­ arbeit in Beratungsgesprächen. Darüber hinaus können die Mittler kulturbedingte Verständigungsschwierigkeiten im Ge­spräch ausräumen. So tragen sie zu einer Teilhabe an den Angeboten im Sozial-, Gesundheits- und Bildungsbereich bei. Insbesondere für Neuzuwanderer kann dieses Angebot ein ent­ scheidender Türöffner auf dem Weg der Integration darstellen.

Thanks to the Possehl Foundation, in Lübeck not only officially recognised refugees can attend these German courses. The option German for everybody is open to all new arrivals here, regardless of residence status. Where the Federal and local governments are not responsible for financing these language courses, the Possehl Foundation helps out. Moreover, the Sprungtuch e. V. association offers a “Language and Culture Brokers Pool”, because insufficient language skills are a substantial barrier in the integration process for immigrants. This is where the concept of language and culture brokering, developed, tried and tested over the years by the local authorities, comes in. It aims at improving the understanding between people whose knowledge of German is inadequate and the employees of the administration, facilities and institutions e.g. by means of translation services for counselling sessions. Furthermore, the brokers can remove culturally based understanding difficulties during such conversations. In this way they contribute to the options available in the social, health and educational areas. In particular for new arrivals, this can be a decisive door opener on the road to integration.

Ein weiteres zentrales gesamtgesellschaftliches Anliegen ist die Schaffung des Zuganges zu unseren Hochschulen; hier ist in Lübeck – initiiert von der Fachhochschule Lübeck – ein vor­bildliches Modell entwickelt worden: Die Lübecker Integra­ tionskurse LINKplus. Ein 3-stufiges Vorbereitungsprogramm integriert Flüchtlinge­ in einen Studiengang der Fachhochschule Lübeck. In den vom Bund finanzierten Integrationskursen identifizieren die Lehrkräfte potentielle studienfähige Teilnehmer: Der Fokus liegt dabei auf Personen mit einem beruflichen Hintergrund, die gerne studieren möchten. Die ausgewählten Teilnehmer präsentieren sich vor einem Gremium, das dann die Studien­ zulassungssituation prüft und eine Profilbestimmung mit dem Fokus auf Technik und Naturwissenschaften vornimmt. Sie werden im Klassenverbund unterrichtet und erhalten zu­ sätzlich ein gezieltes studien- und berufsvorbereitendes Lehr­ angebot, das sie im ersten Schritt auf den weiteren Weg zum zukünftigen Studium vorbereitet.

A further central and comprehensive social concern is the creation of access to our colleges and universities; in this connection, an exemplary model has been developed here in Lübeck, initiated by the Technical University Lübeck: The programme is called LINKplus. A three-step preparation programme integrates refugees into one of the curricula of the Technical University Lübeck. In these federally financed integration courses, the teaching staff identifies participants potentially qualified for participation in regular study courses: in this connection, the focus is on people with a professional background who would like to study. Then, the selected participants introduce themselves to a further selection team that then examines the admission situation and creates a profile focussing on technology and natural sciences. They are instructed within a classroom setting and, additionally, receive a set of targeted study and professional preparation study options that represents a first step on the long road to the future study programme. The second stage consists in the formation of an independent class for the course German on the Job.

Im April 2016 ging das Lübecker Verbundprojekt LINKplus in der Lübecker Emil Possehl Schule an den Start. The Lübeck associations’ LINKplus project was started at the city’s Emil Possehl School in April of 2016.

In der zweiten Stufe wird eine eigenständige Klasse für den Kurs Deutsch für den Beruf gebildet. Wer am Ende feststellt, dass der ursprünglich angestrebte Weg bis zum Studium zu weit ist, kann das Programm verlassen und nun „höher qua­ lifiziert“ wieder in den ursprünglichen Beruf einsteigen oder die Berufsausbildung oder die Lehre für einen anderen Beruf aufnehmen, denn IHK und Handwerkskammer sind ebenfalls Kooperationspartner von LINKplus. In der Stufe 3 wird ein spezielles Vorlesungsprogramm MINTVorkurse angeboten, das inhaltlich speziell auf die Studien­ perspektive ausgerichtet ist und auch schon teilweise in den Hörsälen der Fachhochschule stattfindet, so dass eine weitere Annäherung an den Studienbetrieb und das Studienleben er­ reicht wird. Nach erfolgreichem Abschluss der Stufe 3 kann ein reguläres Studium in einem Studiengang des breit gefächerten Studienangebotes der Fachhochschule aufgenommen werden. Das Konzept LINKplus nutzt bereits bestehende Angebote und ergänzt diese um Lehrinhalte der berufsbildenden Schulen. Mit diesem pragmatischen Ansatz kann die Fachhochschule Lübeck einen Beitrag für die berufliche und damit auch für die soziale Integration von Flüchtlingen in unsere Gesellschaft leisten.

Students who, at the end of Step 2, decide that the road to their original goal of a diploma course is too long, can leave the programme and, now with a “higher qualification”, return to their original trade or profession or start a professional training programme for another job, as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Crafts Council are also cooperation partners of LINKplus. Step 3 offers, among others, a special lecturing programme entitled MINT Prep Courses, whose content is specially oriented towards higher education prospects and which is also already partially implemented in the Technical College’s lecture halls, thus providing a further rapprochement to the regular study and student life settings. After successful completion of Step 3, candidates can be admitted to a regular curriculum out of the broad range offered by the Technical College. The LINKplus concept utilises already existing options and supplements them with educational content from the trade and professional schools. With this pragmatic approach, the Lübeck Technical College makes a valuable contribution for the professional and social integration of refugees into our society.

Integratives Segeln im Segler-Verein Wakenitz Integrational Sailing in the Wakenitz Sailing Club Die Possehl-Stiftung hat den Verein 2016 bei der Anschaffung spezieller Segelboote für Menschen mit Behinderungen un­ terstützt. Mit Fuß- oder Handsteuerungen können Menschen mit neurologischen Erkrankungen wie multipler Sklerose und Morbus Parkinson oder auch Rollstuhlfahrer dem Segelsport nachgehen. Auch viele Gäste, die im Rahmen einer onkolo­ gischen Rehabilitation zum Verein kamen und häufig unter Gleichgewichtsstörungen und Kraftverlust litten, profitierten vom Segeln in den neu angeschafften Booten. Sich in einer für die meisten von ihnen neuen Sportart mit Freude und Erfolg ausprobieren zu können, gibt etlichen von ihnen neuen Mut, wie sie immer wieder begeistert erzählen. Auch die Mitglieder des Vereins, die die Segelgäste jeden Mitt­ wochnachmittag begleiten und anleiten, haben viel Freude beim Zusehen, wie die körperlich beeinträchtigten Menschen nach meist anfänglicher Aufregung schnell lernen, mit Wind und Welle umzugehen und selbstständig Manöver auf dem See zu fahren. Segeln ist Volkssport in Lübeck – nicht verwunderlich, man kann hier auf der Wakenitz, auf der Trave, auf dem Meer oder auf einem der zahlreichen Seen im Lübecker Umland segeln gehen. Sailing is a popular sport open to all in Lübeck – hardly surprising, as the numerous lakes and waterways in and around the city, such as the Wakenitz, the Trave, or even on the sea offer plenty of opportunities to practice this enjoyable activity.

Die Boote sind so ausgestattet, dass Menschen mit Behinderungen sie selbständig bedienen können. The boats are equipped in a manner such that disabled people can handle them by themselves.

In 2016, the Possehl Foundation supported the Club in the acquisition of special sailing boats for disabled people. With foot or hand controls, people with neurological illnesses such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson disease and even wheelchair bound sailors can practice this sport. In addition, many people who, as part of their oncological physiotherapy, came to the Club but frequently suffered from balance dysfunctions and loss of strength, also benefited from sailing in the newly acquired boats. For many of them and according to their own enthusiastic comments, the opportunity to try out their abilities in a new sport joyfully and successfully imbues them with new courage. Club members who support and instruct these sailing guests every Wednesday afternoon greatly enjoy watching how, after usually initial excitement, people with physical disabilities quickly learn to deal with wind and waves and independently to navigate various manoeuvres on the lake.

Die Gemeinschaft Lübecker Künstler ist ein Zusammenschluss von über 80 Malern, Zeichnern, Fotografen, Objektkünstlern und Bildhauern, der seit mehr als 70 Jahren besteht. Seit zwei Jahren hat sie in der Galerie „Artler“ ihren Sitz. Hier finden auch ihre Mitgliederversammlungen statt, und die Lübecker Bürger können die Künstler der Region kennenlernen. Vorträge zu Techniken, Kunst und Kunstbetrieb, Filme über Künstlerporträts werden veranstaltet, aber auch ein Gespräch mit einem Fachanwalt für Medien­ und Urheberrechts fand bei den Künstlern regen Zuspruch. Die Gemeinschaft Lübecker Künstler veranstaltet seit vier Jah­ ren das Kunstprojekt „Offene Ateliers“. Dem Publikum wird Zu­ tritt und Einblick in einige Arbeitsräume der Lübecker Künstler gewährt. An einem Wochenende können Besucher Kunstwer­ ke in der Atmosphäre ihres Entstehens erleben, die Künstler zu Techniken, Sujets und Kunstströmungen befragen. Unter­ schiedlichste Arbeitsraumsituationen können begangen und entdeckt werden.

The Community of Lübeck Artists is a creative pool that has been in existence for more than 70 years, and which in the meantime counts more than 80 painters, drawing artists, photographers, object artists and sculptors. For the last two years they have had their headquarters in the “Artler” gallery. The gallery is also the venue for the group’s member meetings, enabling Lübeck’s citizens to get to know the region’s artists. Lectures about techniques, art and the business of art, fi lms about artists’ portraits ran alongside events like an informational discussion with a lawyer specialised in media and intellectual property law, which was also warmly received by the artists. For four years now, the Community of Lübeck Artists has been organising the art project “Open Workshops and Studios”. The public is granted access and an insight into some workspaces of Lübeck artists. On one weekend, visitors can experience works of art in the environment of their creation and ask the artists about techniques, subjects and art currents. This enables the public to discover and be part of the most different workspace situations. Once a year, the group organises an “Annual Show”, presenting the full multiplicity of Lübeck’s art scene.

Klangrauschen – Neue Musik für Lübeck Klangrauschen (Atmospheric Sounds) – New music for Lübeck Mit der Ausrichtung auf zeitgenössische und experimentelle Musik, präsentiert durch Spezialisten der Neuen­Musik­Szene, schließt Klangrauschen eine Lücke im Lübecker Konzertange­ bot. Die Reihe und das angegliederte Ensemble RADAR leisten dabei einen entscheidenden Beitrag und nehmen so Stellung zum gegenwärtigen Diskurs sowohl der Musik als auch der Kunst im Allgemeinen. Die Veranstaltungen werden im Ehren­ amt geplant und organisiert. Oft entstehen einzigartige, nicht reproduzierbare Konzerterlebnisse, die in der Vergangenheit auch so hochkarätige Künstler wie Corinna Harfouch, das 1. Deutsche Stromorchester oder die Lichtkünstlerin Katrin Bethge geschaffen haben. 2016 / 2017 feiert die Konzertreihe „Klangrauschen – musik für neugierige ohren“ ihr fünfjähriges Bestehen mit einem wie immer spannenden und gelegentlich auch verrückten Pro­ gramm. So präsentiert die Reihe mit dem Fokus auf Unbekann­ tem, Ungewohntem und Unerhörtem vielseitige Konzerte. Es treffen Licht­Klang­Projekte auf Crossover, Kammermusik der Moderne auf Performance mit Elektronik und Live­Video. Die Possehl­Stiftung fördert diesen wichtigen Bestandteil des Lübecker Kulturlebens seit seinem Bestehen.

With an orientation towards contemporary and experimental music presented by specialist of the New Music scene, Klangrauschen closes a gap in Lübeck’s concert programming. The series and the associated ensemble RADAR make a decisive contribution, thus positioning themselves in regard to the contemporary discourse both of art generally and music in particular. The events are planned and organised on a volunteer basis. Frequently this results in unique, not always reproducible concert experiences such as those created in the past by high calibre artists like Corinna Harfouch, the First Deutsches Stromorchester or the lighting artist Katrin Bethge. In 2016 / 2017, the concert series “Klangrauschen – music for curious ears” celebrates its fi fth year of existence with – as usual – an exciting and on occasion crazy programme. Thus, the series presents multifaceted concerts focusing on unknown, unusual and unheard of combinations. In this way, light and sound projects meet Crossover, modern chamber music meets Performance with electronics and live video. The Possehl Foundation has been promoting this important component of Lübeck’s cultural life since its inception.

Ferienfreizeiten für Kinder und Jugendliche Recreational holiday options for children and teenagers In Lübeck gibt es zahlreiche Vereine und gemeinnützige Trä­ ger, die den von ihnen betreuten Kindern Angebote in den Schulferien machen. Oft können die Eltern für die Kosten nicht aufkommen. Die Schwerpunkte sind ganz unterschied­ lich: Der Lübecker Jugendring bietet neben dem regulären Ferienpassprogramm Freizeiten für benachteiligte Kinder an, die Sportvereine locken mit Trainings- und Turnierfahrten, die Gesellschaft für das hochbegabte Kind fordert und fördert Kin­ der, die überdurchschnittliche Leistungen erbringen und für die es wenige passgenaue Angebote gibt, der CVJM fährt mit den Jugendlichen bis nach Korsika, und die Deutsche Kinder und Jugendstiftung bietet mit futOUR eine Ferienfreizeit mit integrierter Berufsbildung. All diese Angebote hat die PossehlStiftung in den vergangenen Jahren unterstützt.

Lübeck has numerous clubs and nonprofit organisations that offer school holiday activities for the children in their care. Parents can often not finance these activities, which focus on widely differing goals, by themselves. In addition to the regular Holiday Pass programme, the Lübeck Youth Ring offers leisure activities for disadvantaged children, the sports clubs have attractive training and tournament trips, the Association for Gifted Children challenges and encourages children with above average performances and for whom there are few appropriate programme choices, the CVJM (Young People’s Christian Association) takes young people as far as Corsica, and with futOUR, the German Children and Youth Foundation­ offers holiday leisure time with integrated professional. All these activity options have received support from the Possehl Foundation over the past years.

An den Freizeiten in den Zeltlagern der Sozialistischen Jugend „Die Falken“ nehmen manchmal über 3.000 Kinder und Jugendliche teil, aber auch kleine Gruppen mit jüngeren Kindern werden in den Ferien betreut. Sometimes, more than 3,000 children and teenagers participate in the tent camps of the Socialist Youth association “Die Falken” (“The Falcons”), but small groups with younger children are also catered to in the holidays.

Der Verein musikum e. V. betreibt eine Musikschule in der Alt­ stadt, in der etwa 700 Schülerinnen und Schüler unterrichtet werden. Neben diesem Einzel- und Kleingruppenunterricht bietet musikum eine hohe Bandbreite an differenzierten ele­ mentaren musikalischen Gruppen- und Ensembleangeboten für Groß und Klein vom Gitarrenensemble bis zum Orchester. Regelmäßig finden kostenlose Konzerte statt, bei denen Schü­ lerinnen und Schüler ihr Können zeigen, Kinder und Erwachse­ ne Musik mit allen Sinnen erleben und auch Instrumente aus­ probieren können. Leihinstrumente ermöglichen es, in einem individuellen Baukastensystem Instrument und Lehrkraft erst einmal einige Wochen zu beschnuppern. Eine besondere Tradition sind die dreimal jährlich stattfinden­ den Musik- und Theaterfreizeiten für Kinder, Jugendliche oder Erwachsene. Neben den musikalischen Fortschritten durch intensive Proben in verschiedenen Ensembles erleben die Teilnehmenden dort die verbindende Kraft des gemeinsamen Musizierens hautnah. Ein Gemeinschaftserlebnis sind auch die Drum Circles. Hier können alle Menschen unabhängig von Alter, Vorkenntnissen, kulturellem Hintergrund oder einer Be­ hinderung gemeinsam Musik und Rhythmus erleben. Die Possehl-Stiftung hat den Verein in den letzten zehn Jah­ ren bei der Ausstattung der Räume, der Anschaffung von In­ strumenten, insbesondere von Leihinstrumenten, der Durch­ führung von Musikfreizeiten sowie der Anschaffung von Rhythmus-instrumenten für die Drum Circles unterstützt und fördert aktuell die Einrichtung einer Bläserklasse.

Mit den neu angeschafften Instrumenten können die Kinder die ganze Vielfalt der Blasinstrumente für sich entdecken. With the newly acquired instruments the children can discover for themselves the full variety of sound offered by wind instruments.

The association musikum e. V. operates a music school in the Old Town. Some 700 students receive tuition there. In addition to this individual and small group tuition, musikum also offers a broad range of differentiated elementary musical group options as well as a wealth of ensemble options for children and adults, ranging from guitar ensembles to full orchestras. There are regularly free concerts in which the students demonstrate their skill, while children and adults experience music with all their senses and can even try out different instruments. Loaner instruments enable students to get to know their chosen instrument and selected teachers for a few weeks in an individual building block system before making a final decision. A special tradition is represented by the music and recreational theatre for children, youth and adults, which takes place three times a year. In addition to the musical progress achieved through intensive practice in different ensembles, with this system participants get a chance to experience the uniting power of hands-on concerted music making. Another common experience is provided by the Drum Circles. In this option, all people, regardless of age, prior knowledge, cultural background or potential disabilities, can experience music and rhythm together. Over the last ten years, the Possehl Foundation has supported the Association with room facilities, the acquisition of instruments, in particular of loaner instruments, the implementation of Recreational Music Holidays and the acquisition of rhythm instruments for the Drum Circles as well as currently sponsoring the creation of a wind section.

Not der Bedürftigen Hardship of those in need In Lübeck gib es ein breit gefächertes Hilfsangebot für bedürf­ tige, in Not geratene Lübecker Bürger, das von der Possehl-Stif­ tung gefördert wird. Die Rechtsfürsorge Lübeck bietet eine umfassende Schuldner­ beratung „Clever haushalten“, die Beratung und Orientierung anbietet bei der Entschuldung und vor allem der Vermeidung weiterer Notlagen. Ein kompetenter Umgang mit Geld soll ver­ mittelt und eine Stabilisierung der wirtschaftlichen Verhält­ nisse erreicht werden. Auch mit dem in Lübeck ansässigen Arbeitskreis PHOENIX e.V. arbeitet die Possehl-Stiftung zusammen. Er unterstützt Perso­ nen dabei, ihr Leben trotz psychischer Erkrankung und Sucht wieder in den Griff zu bekommen. Sie werden ermutigt, selbst­ verantwortlich, selbstbewusst und selbstverständlich am Le­ ben der „normalen“ Gesellschaft teilzuhaben, auch wenn sie dies bisher aus eigener Kraft nicht konnten. Der Arbeitskreis unterstützt die Betroffenen von Beginn an in den praktischen Dingen: bei der Anmietung und Unterhaltung der eigenen Wohnung, bei Wegen zu Behörden und bei Bedarf beim Besuch der Schuldnerberatung. Sollte für bestimmte Anschaffungen das Geld fehlen, stellt der Arbeitskreis Phönix für seine Klien­ ten einen Antrag bei der Possehl-Stiftung. Der CVJM kann aus Stiftungsmitteln besonders bedürftige Stu­ denten dabei unterstützen, ihr Studium erfolgreich durchzu­ führen. Hier hat ein Pastor vor über zehn Jahren als Studenten­ seelsorger die Beratung und Unterstützung Hilfe suchender Studentinnen und Studenten für die Possehl-Stiftung über­ nommen. Dafür stehen jährlich etwa € 50.000 zur Verfügung, die den gemeinsam verabredeten Kriterien entsprechend aus­ gezahlt werden. Jede Bewilligung setzt ein Beratungsgespräch voraus, in dem erörtert wird, wie zukünftige Notsituationen vermieden werden können. Dies schließt Unterstützung bei Bewerbungen für Jobs ebenso ein wie Verhandlungen mit Stu­ dentenwerk, Krankenkassen und Banken.

Lübeck has a broad range of help options for citizens who are victims of hardship; many of these options are sponsored by the Possehl Foundation. Lübeck Legal Assistance offers comprehensive debtor advice under the motto “Clever budgeting”. This advice and orien- tation service is offered for purposes of debt relief and, primarily, for the prevention of further financial distress situations. The organisation’s goal is to teach competent money management and to attain a stabilisation of the client’s financial situation. With these resources Legal Assistance counsellors can, in particularly difficult situations, easily and without significant bureaucracy promote debt settlement. The Possehl Foundation also supports the PHOENIX e. V. working circle. It helps people in their efforts to regain control of their lives in spite of psychiatric illness and addiction. They are encouraged to participate in “normal” social life in a responsible, self-confident and selfevident manner. The PHOENIX e. V. working circle supports the people affected from the very beginning in the practical things in life, such as the rental and maintenance of their own home, administrative errands and, if necessary, in appointments with the debt coun­ selling service. With Foundation financing, the CVJM (YPCA) can help particularly needy students­ successfully to continue and complete their studies. Responsibility for this endeavour to advise and support students seeking help was taken over by a pastor in his role as student chaplain a little more than ten years ago. Some € 50,000 are available for this purpose on an annual basis to be paid out in accor­dance with the jointly agreed upon criteria. Every approval requires a coun­ selling session to explain how future emergency situations can be prevented. This includes help with job applications as well as negotiations with the student union, health insurance schemes and banks.

TheaterFigurenMuseum Lübeck gGmbH und Figurentheater Lübeck gGmbH TheaterFigurenMuseum Lübeck gGmbH and Figurentheater Lübeck gGmbH Eine Gruppe historischer Kaufmannshäuser in einer male­ rischen Gasse der Lübecker Altstadt birgt gleich zwei Kultur­ schätze: Das TheaterFigurenMuseum und das Figurentheater lassen in langjähriger enger Zusammenarbeit die faszinieren­ de Welt des Puppenspiels lebendig werden. Das 1982 gegründete TheaterFigurenMuseum besitzt eine Sammlung ersten Ranges an Theaterfiguren, Requisiten, Ku­ lissen und Plakaten aus Asien, Afrika und Europa. Zu dieser Sammlung gehören indische Schattenfiguren, afrikanische Masken, Marionetten aus Myanmar und China, Nachlässe von Puppenspieler-Dynastien aus Deutschland und Animations­ filmrequisiten junger Filmemacher. Im Februar 2016 kam der Vorlass des Altonaer Figurentheaters Rhabarber ins Museum. Die Sonderausstellung „Pinocchio & seine Brüder“ thematisierte einen weltbekannten Kinderbuch­ klassiker und seine Rezeption im Figurentheater und Anima­ tionsfilm, während „Ausgedacht & handgemacht. Theaterfi­ guren & ihre Schöpfer“ zeitgenössische Figurenbildner aus Deutschland porträtierte. Im Winter wurden Märchenszenen aus dem Fundus präsentiert, darunter Marionetten des ehe­ maligen Lübecker Marionettentheaters Fritz Fey sen., die im Sommer inventarisiert worden waren, und wieder Taschen­ lampenführungen veranstaltet.

A group of historic merchants’ houses in a picturesque lane of the Old Town of Lübeck’s Old Town conceals not one, but two cultural treasures: the fascinating world of the puppet theatre comes alive through the long-time close collaboration between the TheaterFigurenMuseum and the Figurentheater. The TheaterFigurenMuseum, founded in 1982, includes a first-class collection of various types of theatre figures and props, scenery backdrops and posters from Asia, Africa and Europe. The collection comprises Indian shadow figures, African masks, marionettes from Myanmar and China, bequests from German puppeteer dynasties and cartoon props from young film makers. In February, 2016 the living bequest of the Altona Figure Theatre Rhabarber was incorporated into the Museum. The special exhibition “Pinocchio & his brothers” built on a world famous children’s book classic and its reception in the figure theatre and animated moving pictures, while “Ausgedacht & handgemacht. Theaterfiguren & ihre Schöpfer” (Made up & hand made. Theatre figures and their creators) presented portraits of contemporary German figure designers. In the winter, fairy tale scenes from the collection were presented, including marionettes of the former Fritz Fey sen Lübeck Marionette Theatre that had been inventoried in the summer; pocket torch tours were once again organised.

Im Figurentheater direkt nebenan kann man das ganze Jahr über alle Spielarten modernen Figurentheaters auf der Bühne erleben. Anlässlich des Lübecker Gedenkens zum Bombenangriff Pal­ marum 1942 rief das Figurentheater 2013 die Reihe „Propa­ ganda Überleben Widerstand“ mit Inszenierungen für Schüler und Erwachsene ins Leben. 2016 beteiligten sich hier wieder auch Oberstufenschüler kreativ mit einer Szenencollage zum Thema Demokratie. Zum Wochenende „Junges Figurentheater“ traten zwei Absol­ venten der Berliner Hochschule Ernst Busch mit ihrem Thea­ ter „Flunkerproduktionen“ nachmittags und abends auf. Im Oktober 2016 fand das 4. Figurentheater Festival FIGURENTHEATER-GESTALTUNG statt. Theaterfiguren – Marionetten, Tischtheater-, Klappmaul-, Handpuppen und wie sie alle hei­ ßen: Sie dürfen in keiner Inszenierung fehlen! Aber wer stellt sie her und wie und auch warum? Und wie sieht denn dann das Bühnenbild aus? Spielt es mit, braucht man es noch? Der Ausstatter, Szenograf, der Figurenbildner – das sind längst eigenständige, studierbare Berufe; sie haben teil am krea­tiven Inszenierungsprozess neben Regie und Dramaturgie. In diesem Jahr ehrte der Verband Deutscher Puppen­ theater e. V. die Possehl-Stiftung Lübeck für die langjähri­ ge und besondere Förderung der Kunstform Puppen- und Figurentheater. Das Engagement der Stiftung sowohl für das TheaterFigurenMuseum Lübeck als auch für das Fi­ gurentheater Lübeck wurde am 1. Oktober 2016 mit der Verlei­ hung der „Spielenden Hand“ ausgezeichnet. Der Ministerpräsi­ dent Torsten Albig lobte in seinem Grußwort das Engagement der Stiftung für diese „feine Gattung“ des Theaters.

In the Figurentheater directly next door, all variants of modern puppet shows come alive on the stage all year long. On the occasion of the Lübeck memorial activities in relation to the Palmarum bombing in 1942, in 2013 the Figurentheater brought the “Propaganda Überleben Widerstand” (Surviving Propaganda Resistance) series to life with productions for school children and adults. In 2016, sixth-form students also creatively participated in the memorial with a tableau collage about democracy. At the “Young Figure Theatre” weekend, two graduates of Berlin’s Ernst Busch University performed pieces in the afternoons and evenings. The Fourth Figure Theatre Festival took place in October 2016 FIGURE THEATRE DESIGN. Theatre figures – marionettes, table theatre, movable mouth and hand puppets and so many others: there’s no good production without them! But who makes them, and how, or even why? And what does the stage design look like then? Is it part of the action, or is it even still needed? Set design, scenography, figure design – these have long been independent, study based professions; they all have an equally valuable part to play in the creative staging process, just as direction and dramaturgy. This year, the Verband Deutscher Puppentheater e.V. distinguished the Possehl Foundation Lübeck for its long time special support of the puppet und figure theatre art form. The commitment of the Foundation both to the TheaterFigurenMuseum Lübeck and to the Figurentheater Lübeck was rewarded on 1st October 2016 with the award of the “Playing Hand”. Torsten Albig, Prime Minister of Schleswig Hol­ stein, praised the Foundation’s commitment to this “sophisticated theatre category” in his introductory address. JahrBuch YEARBook 2016

Europäisches Hansemuseum Lübeck gGmbH European Hansemuseum Lübeck gGmbH Das Europäische Hansemuseum ist eines der jüngsten und modernsten Museen in Deutschland. Aufgrund seiner beein­ druckenden Architektur, seines erlebnisorientierten Vermitt­ lungskonzeptes und der Verknüpfung von Geschichte, Wirt­ schaft und Gegenwart hat es sich innerhalb kurzer Zeit national einen Namen gemacht und im kulturellen Leben Lübecks und Schleswig Holsteins einen festen Platz eingenommen. Durch die Vielzahl an Veranstaltungen, die 2016 stattgefunden haben – vor allem Lesungen, wissenschaftliche Vorträge, Kon­ zerte – wurden neue Besucherinnen und Besucher angespro­ chen. Beim Hanse-Kulturfestival oder der Lübecker Museums­ nacht besuchten innerhalb weniger Stunden mehrere Tausend Menschen die Ausstellung, das Museumsareal sowie die zahl­ reichen Begleitprogramme. Kooperationen mit den Lübecker Nachrichten, den Nordischen Filmtagen und anderen haben ebenfalls dazu beigetragen, das Museum als Ort der kulturel­ len Begegnung zu etablieren und seine öffentliche Wahrneh­ mung zu steigern. An Themenführungen für verschiedene Altersgruppen sowie speziellen Erlebnisformaten – wie die szenische Laternen­ führung durch das Burgkloster – haben 2016 rund 24.000 Besucherinnen und Besucher teilgenommen. The European Hansemuseum is one of the newest and most modern museums in Germany. Because of its impressive architecture, its adventure experience oriented communication concept and the intermeshing of history, economics and the present, within a very short period of time it has gained national name recognition and firmly ensconced itself in the cultural life of Lübeck and Schleswig Holstein. The numerous events organised in 2016   – in particular, readings, scientific lectures, concerts – appealed to new visitors. During the Hanseatic Culture­ Festival or the Lübeck Museums Night, within just a few hours, several thousand people visited the exhibition, the museum grounds and the numerous accompanying programmes. Cooperation schemes with the Lübeck News, the Nordic Film Days and other festivals have also contributed to establishing the Museum as a place for cultural encounters and to increase the degree of its public perception. Guided theme tours for different age groups as well as special adventure experience formats, such as the guided scenic lantern tour of the castle convent attracted some 24,000 visitors in 2016. The innovative Hanseatic Researcher Box for primary schools-has in the meantime become a fixed component of the educational and knowledge communication programme just as much as the Quiz for exhibition discoverers and long-term colla- boration with the Michael Haukohl Foun- dation and the History Experience Space. March saw the inauguration of the Café Fräulein Brömse, which, together with the NORD Restaurant, ensures delightful culinary experiences, and not just for museum visitors. The special spatial arrangements within the Hansemuseum provided the appropriate setting for many private celebrations and company events.

Die besonderen Räumlichkeiten des Hansemuseums boten vielen privaten Feiern und Firmene­ vents den passenden Rahmen. Der europäische Gedanke des Museums wird durch interna­ tionale Kooperationen, z. B. mit Talinn, Brüssel oder Bergen vorangetrieben. Die erste Sonderausstellung mit dem Titel „Silberglanz und Silbergier – Der Silberschatz aus Bergen“ entstand aus der intensiven Zusammenarbeit mit den KODE Kunstmuseen in Bergen und präsentiert wertvolle Silberexpo­ nate, die nie zuvor außerhalb Norwegens gezeigt wurden. Das Europäische Hansemuseum erfreut sich insgesamt einer hohen Reputation, 91 % der Gäste würden es laut Besucherbe­ fragung weiterempfehlen. Andreas Heller Architects & Desig­ ners wurden für den Entwurf für das Museum mit mehreren renommierten Preisen ausgezeichnet, darunter der if Design Award. Dank des wissenschaftlichen „Vaters“ des Museums, Prof. Rolf Hammel-Kiesow, nimmt das Haus international längst eine führende Rolle in der Hanseforschung ein.

The European idea underlying the Museum is driven by international co-operation arrangements, such as with Tallinn, Brussels and Bergen. The first special exhibition, entitled “Silver’s Shine and Silver Greed – The Bergen Silver Treasure” resulted from intensive collaboration with the KODE Museum of Art in Bergen and presents valuable silver exhibits that had never before been shown outside of Norway. The European Hansemuseum enjoys an overall highly favourable reputation: according to visitor surveys, 91% would recommend it to others. Andreas Heller Architects & Designers were distinguished for the Museum’s design with several renowned awards, including the iF Design Award. Thanks to Prof. Rolf Hammel-Kiesow, the scientific “father” of the Museum, the institution has long taken on an internationally leading role in Hanseatic research.

1850 wird Emil Possehl als erster Sohn des Lübecker Kauf­ manns Ludwig Possehl in der Beckergrube geboren. In seinem Elternhaus werden auch die Geschäfte der Firma L. Possehl & Co., einer Eisen­, Blech­ und Kohlenhandlung, abgewickelt. Bis heute befindet sich hier der Sitz der Unternehmensgruppe. 1873 tritt Emil Possehl in den väterlichen Betrieb ein und ist wenige Jahre später größter Erzhändler Europas. Durch den Zukauf von Unternehmen aus dem produzierenden und ver­ arbeitenden Gewerbe in Russland, Schweden und Norwegen wird aus dem Lübecker Kaufmann ein Industrieller, dessen Verbindungen von Europa bis nach Übersee reichen. Unter sei­ ner Führung steigt der Warenumsatz um das Fünfzigfache. Als Emil Possehl 1915 sein Testament macht, wird sein Vermögen auf 100 Mio. Mark geschätzt. Von Zeitgenossen wird Emil Possehl als schroff und abwei­ send geschildert. Seine ungewöhnliche Arbeitskraft lässt ihn zäh und unbeirrbar seine Ziele verfolgen. Als Unternehmer zeichnet er sich durch Disziplin und Weitblick aus. 1901 wird er in den Lübecker Senat gewählt, eine Auszeichnung, die ihm viel bedeutet hat. Im Rahmen seines politischen Engagements setzt er sich für den Ausbau der Verkehrsinfrastruktur ein und zählt zu den Initiatoren des Elbe­Lübeck­Kanals.

Emil Possehl was born in Lübeck in 1850 as the fi rst son of Lübeck merchant Ludwig Possehl. His parental home at the Beckergrube was also the business headquarters for L. Possehl & Co., an iron, sheet metal, and coal merchant. The ancestral family home continues to be used as the Head Offi ce for the Possehl Group of Companies. In 1873 Emil Possehl joined his father’s business, becoming the largest ore trader in Europe a few years later. By taking over companies from the production and processing sectors in Russia, Sweden, and Norway, the Lübeck merchant be came an industrialist with European and intercontinental connections. Under his leadership, sales of the commodities he traded rose fi fty-fold. When Emil Possehl made his will in 1915 his fortune was estimated at 100 million Marks.

Durch die Expansion nach Norden und Osten möchte er Lü­ beck, der ehemaligen Königin der Hanse, wieder Glanz ver­ leihen. Es entspricht Emil Possehls hanseatischem Selbst­ verständnis, bereits zu Lebzeiten an die reiche Tradition des Stiftungswesens in Lübeck anzuknüpfen, die in die Blütezeit der Stadt im Mittelalter zurückreicht. Ohne seine großzügige Förderung wäre das Theater an der Beckergrube geschlossen und die Löwenapotheke, das älteste gotische Bürgerhaus der Stadt, abgebrochen worden. Seine Stiftungen zu Lebzeiten sind jedoch niemals reine Geldgeschenke sondern immer mit Be­ dingungen verbunden. Da seine Ehe mit der Schauspielerin Wilhelmine Schönherr kinderlos bleibt, setzt er in seinem Testament die Possehl­Stif­ tung zur Erbin seines gesamten Firmenvermögens ein. His contemporaries described him as gruff and abrasive. His unusual energy was a remarkable asset in his tough and unfl inching pursuit of his goals. As an entrepreneur, his main qualities were discipline and vision. In 1901 he was elected to the Lübeck Senate, a distinction that held a great deal of meaning for him. Within the scope of his political commitment he supported the development of the transport infrastructure, and was one of the initiators of the ElbeLübeck Canal. By expanding the City to the north and east, Possehl wished to generate a renaissance for Lübeck, the former Queen of the Hanseatic League. Emil Possehl’s Hanseatic convictions led him to become involved with Lübeck’s rich tradition of charitable foundations, which originated in the City’s heyday in the Middle Ages, already during his lifetime. Without his generous support, the Theater at the Beckergrube would have been closed, and the Löwenapotheke (Lion’s Pharmacy), the oldest Gothic patrician mansion in the City, would have been torn down. However, the grants Possehl made during his lifetime were never pure gifts of money, but were always linked to conditions intended to serve Lübeck’s development. As his marriage with actress Wilhelmine Schönherr remained childless, he bequeathed all his business assets to the Possehl Foundation. The Foundation was intended to serve the “the furtherance of all that is good and beautiful in Lübeck”. Even in a City so richly blessed with charitable foundations, the Possehl Foundation has attained a magnitude heretofore unknown.

Emil Possehls Testament entsprechend trägt der Stiftungsvor­ stand Sorge für die Vermögenserhaltung und Vermögensver­ waltung des Unternehmens. So hat der Stifter weitsichtig die Voraussetzung dafür geschaffen, dass der Fortbestand seiner Unternehmensgruppe gesichert und gleichzeitig die Unter­ nehmenserträge seiner Heimatstadt zu Gute kommen können. Bis heute hat der Wunsch Emil Possehls, das „Gute und Schö­ ne“ in Lübeck zu fördern, in nahezu allen Lebensbereichen der Hansestadt Spuren hinterlassen.

According to Emil Possehl’s Will, the Foundation’s Board is in charge of maintaining and administering the enterprise’s assets. In this way the visionary Founder created the prerequisites for ensuring that the future of his Group of Companies would be secure and simultaneously that the profi ts from those businesses can advantageously be put to use in the service of his home town. To this day, Emil Possehl’s wish for the furtherance of “the good and beautiful things” in Lübeck has left an enduring mark in almost all aspects of life in his beloved Hanseatic City.

Die Unternehmensgruppe besteht aktuell aus acht voneinander unabhängigen Geschäftsbereichen, mit einem Schwerpunkt in der investitionsgüterindustrie. the Group currently consists of eight mutually independent divisions with emphasis on the capital goods industry.

Unter dem Dach der Management-Holding L. Possehl & Co. mbH bildet die Possehl-Gruppe einen in hanseatischer Tradi­ tion geführten Konzern mit mehr als 140 Gesellschaften welt­ weit. Zusammen erwirtschaften rund 12.000 Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter einen Jahresumsatz von mehr als drei Milliar­ den Euro. Die Geschicke der Unternehmensgruppe werden aus einer schlanken Holding am Stammsitz in Lübeck gesteuert. Lediglich wenige, für die Entwicklung von Possehl entschei­ dende zentrale Aufgaben – wie die strategische Ausrichtung der Gruppe – werden von Lübeck aus koordiniert und durch­ geführt. Die Führung der operativen Gesellschaften obliegt hingegen den lokalen Geschäftsführungen, die weitreichende Kompetenzen und Verantwortung für das Tagesgeschäft ha­ ben. Nur so ist es möglich, einen räumlich so weit verzweigten und diversifiziert aufgestellten Konzern aus einer kleinen Hol­ ding heraus zu steuern.

Under the umbrella of the L. Possehl & Co. mbH holding company, the Possehl Group is managed in the Hanseatic tradition, comprising more than 140 companies worldwide. Together, about 12,000 employees generate an annual turnover of more than 3 billion euro. The course of the Group is steered from a slim holding company at the original headquarters in Lübeck. Only a very few centralised tasks that are key for Possehl’s development – such as the Group’s strategic orientation – are coordinated and implemented from Lübeck. The management of the operating companies, on the other hand, is the purview of the local management teams, which have broad competence and responsibility for the day-to-day business. Only this structure allows a group that is geographically so widely spread and also so diversifi ed to be steered from a small holding company.

We are a group of companies that is characterised by its entrepreneurial spirit, by tradition and responsibility – and this for now 169 years. Our ideals and our corporate philosophy are expressed in the concept “Possehl – The Group of Entrepreneurs”. We see ourselves as an alliance of substantially independently and responsibly managed medium-sized enterprises. We preserve the identity of the individual companies, in particular by maintaining their names and cultures, which differentiates us from the usual, centrally managed groups. All Possehl companies are united by a strong sense of cohesion, solidarity and the common goal to act prudently and sustainably. In our daily conduct we apply a fair and obliging manner. Over the last few years, the Possehl Group has experienced strong internal and acquisition driven growth. tHe CoMPanY and tHe FoundatIon Das Unternehmen und die Stiftung sind eng miteinander verbunden – und das seit fast 100 Jahren. Nicht allein die ge­ sellschaftsrechtliche Verbindung – die Possehl­Stiftung ist die alleinige Gesellschafterin der L. Possehl & Co. mbH – auch die räumliche Nähe tragen zu diesem Verbund bei: Der Hauptsitz von Unternehmen und Stiftung ist von Anbeginn an in der Beckergrube in Lübeck. Ganz entscheidend aber für die enge Verbindung ist die ge­ meinsame Fortsetzung des unternehmerischen Denkens und Handelns von Emil Possehl, dem Stiftungsgründer. Dieser zog es stets vor, sein Geld in unternehmerische Aktivitäten zu in­ vestieren. Damit bildet die Unternehmensgruppe das Grund­ stockvermögen der Possehl­Stiftung. Eine wesentliche Aufga­ be der Unternehmensleitung ist es daher, das Vermögen breit zu streuen, in Unternehmen verschiedener Branchen und Ri­ sikostrukturen zu investieren und unangemessene Risiken zu vermeiden. Damit die Possehl­Stiftung gemeinnützige Projek­ te nachhaltig und verlässlich fördern kann, ist die Erwirtschaf­ tung einer stetigen Dividende durch das Unternehmen uner­ lässlich. Sowohl das Unternehmen als auch die Stiftung haben bei ihrem Handeln einen weiten Horizont und orientieren sich an langfristigen Zielen.

The Company and the Foundation are closely intertwined, as they have been for almost 100 years. Both the legal connection given by the fact that the Possehl Foundation is the only shareholder of L. Possehl & Co. mbH and also their spatial closeness contribute to this bond: the headquarters of both the Company and the Foundation are, as they have always been, located at the Beckergrube in Lübeck. However, what is entirely key to the close-knit connection between those is the joint continuance of the entrepreneurial thinking and conduct of Emil Possehl, the founder of the Foundation. He always preferred to invest his money in entrepreneurial activities. In this way, the Group of companies generates the core capital of the Possehl Foundation. An essential task of the corporate management is therefore to achieve a broad diversifi cation when investing in businesses within different industries and with different risk structures while avoiding inappropriate risks. Generating a steady dividend is an essential role the company must fulfi l in order to enable the Possehl Foundation sustainably and reliably to support charitable projects. Both the company and the Foundation have broad horizons for their activities and are focused on long-term goals.

Am 1. Mai 1847 gründete Ludwig Possehl in Lübeck seine firma L. Possehl & Co. und begann mit dem Handel von eisen und Kohle. on 1 May 1847, Ludwig Possehl founded his company L. Possehl & co. in Lübeck and started trading in iron and coal.

Ludwig Possehl’s ältester Sohn emil übernahm die führung des Unternehmens und baute es zum größten importeur für schwedische eisenerze aus. Ludwig Possehl’s oldest son Emil assumed the management of the company and developed it to become the largest importer for Swedish iron ores.

Auch die Possehl-Gruppe wurde durch die beiden Weltkriege stark in Mitleidenschaft gezogen. the Possehl Group was certainly not spared by the two World Wars.

Wiederaufstieg und die entwicklung zu einem internationalen Konzern. Heute ist Possehl eine moderne, global agierende Unternehmensgruppe mit starken mittelständischen Wurzeln in Deutschland und europa. the Possehl Group succeeded in regaining its position and in developing into an international concern. today, Possehl is a modern, global group of companies with strong roots in the middle market both in Germany and in Europe.
