The Foundation’s historical objectives in Lübeck are:

Jugendherbergen und -treffs, Alten- und Pflegeheimen, Gemeinschaftshäusern und Sportanlagen jeglicher Art sowie von freien Trägern, die in der Jugend-, Migranten- und Sozialbetreuung tätig sind, von öffentlichen und privaten kulturellen Einrichtungen und Veranstaltungen sowie von Lübecker Hochschulen, von Lübecker Schulen, Kindergärten, gemeinnützigen Sportvereinen und Jugendverbänden, bei sozialer Not in Einzelfällen sowie durch Unterstützung von Einrichtungen, die sich hilfsbedürftiger Mitbürger annehmen.
Seit 1950 konnte die Possehl-Stiftung über 286 Mio. Euro für ihre fünf Stiftungszwecke bereitstellen.

Editorial
Das Jahr 2015 war ein ganz besonderes für die Possehl-Stiftung. Nach einem Vorlauf von elf Jahren und einer Bauzeit von gut drei Jahren wurde das Europäische Hansemuseum eröffnet. Die Stiftung hat mit einer Beteiligung von 40 Mio. Euro das 50 Mio.-Projekt möglich gemacht. Nun steht in Lübeck das größte Museum zur Geschichte der Hanse. Zur Eröffnung am 27. Mai war Bundeskanzlerin Dr. Angela Merkel angereist und bezeichnete das Europäische Hansemuseum als „neues Juwel in Lübeck“. Darüber hinaus betonte sie auch das hanseatischbürgerschaftliche Engagement, durch das der Bau des Europäischen Hansemuseums erst möglich wurde: Die Unterstützung
des Hansemuseums sei gewiss ganz im Sinne Emil Possehls und ein Beispiel dafür, was heute als „corporate social responsibility“ bezeichnet werde – nachhaltiges Wirtschaften und Verantwortung für das Gemeinwohl zu übernehmen. Auch Schleswig-Holsteins Ministerpräsident Torsten Albig und Lübecks Bürgermeister Bernd Saxe zeigten sich stolz auf das neue Museum in Lübeck. Wenige Tage nach der Eröffnung gab es einen weiteren besonderen Gast im Hansemuseum: Der ehemalige Bundeskanzler Helmut Schmidt erkundete die Hanse-Ausstellung und sprach darüber, das reiche Erbe der Hanse und die Zusammenarbeit der Städte auf die heutige Zeit zu übertragen und für die europäische Einigung nutzbar zu machen.

The year 2015 was a very special one for the Possehl Foundation. The Euro pean Hansemuseum saw its inauguration after a conceptual leadtime of eleven years and a construction time of some three years. The EUR 50 million project was made possible by a EUR 40 million contribution from the Foundation. Now Lübeck is home to the biggest museum dedicated to the history of the Hansa. Germany’s Chancellor, Dr AngelaMerkel, came to the inauguration on 27 May and described the EuropeanHansemuseum as “a new jewelin Lübeck”. She further underlined the Hanseatic citizen commitment without which the construction of the European Hansemuseum would not have been possible: supporting the Hansemuseum would certainly be entirelyconsistent with the ideas of Emil Possehl, and an example of

Mr Torsten Albig, Schleswig-Holstein’s State Premier, and Lübeck’s Mayor, Mr Bernd Saxe, expressed their pride in the city’s new museum. Only a few days after the opening, another very special guest visited the Hansemuseum: former Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt viewed the Hanseatic exhibition and in his speech considered the advantages of transferring the rich heritage of the Hansa and the cooperation of its member cities to our time and utilising it to achieve European unity.

Das neu geschaffene Museumsareal umfasst den Neubau sowie das Maria-Magdalenen-Kloster (Burgkloster zu Lübeck) aus dem 13. Jahrhundert, das über die Zeit verschiedene Nutzungen hatte: Kloster, Armenhaus, Hospital, Gefängnis und Schöffengericht. Außerdem wird das Areal ergänzt durch Freiflächen wie den ehemaligen Friedhof, den Kirchplatz, den früheren Gefängnishof und die Dachterrasse, die einen spektakulären Ausblick auf den Lübecker Hafen bietet. Neben diesem Großereignis hat die Possehl-Stiftung auch ihre reguläre Fördertätigkeit ausgeübt. Das Jahrbuch berichtet über zahlreiche Projekte, die wir dem Wunsch unseres Stifters entsprechend unterstützen konnten. Ohne den unternehmerischen Erfolg der Unternehmergruppe L. Possehl & Co. wäre das Engagement der Stiftung nicht möglich. Daher danken wir jedes Jahr an dieser Stelle allen rund 12.000 Mitarbeitern, die mit ihrer Arbeit unsere erst möglich machen.
Das rund 8.000 qm große Areal des Europäischen Hansemuseums umfasst die denkmalgeschützten Gebäude des Burgklosters und den Neubau an der Untertrave. The newly created museum complex comprises the new construction section as well as the Mary Magdalene Priory (the Castle Priory of Lübeck), dating from the thirteenth century, which has been used for a number of different purposes over time: monastery, poorhouse, hospital, jail and local criminal court. The complex is supplemented by outdoor areas such as the former cemetery, the church square, the former jail courtyard and the roof terrace, which offers a spectacular view of the port of Lübeck. In addition to this major event, the Possehl Foundation also carried on its regular sponsoring activities. The yearbook reports on the numerous projects we were able to support following the desire of our founder. Without the commercial success of the L. Possehl & Co. group of entrepreneurs, the Foundation’s commitment would not be possible. We therefore, as we do every year, on this occasion thank all of the around 12,000 staff whose work is essential to enable ours to take place.

Sanierung einer Jugendstilvilla am Lübecker Stadtpark Restoration of a Art Nouveau villa at the Lübeck City Park Am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde vor den Stadttoren der Lübecker Stadtpark angelegt. Mit der Aufnahme der Arbeiten wurde auch das umliegende Straßennetz entwickelt: Ein neues Wohngebiet entstand. Jeder Neubau musste genehmigt werden. Die Häuser durften nicht mehr als zwei Geschosse mit Dachgeschoss haben, ein Eisengitterzaum an der Straße war Pflicht. So kommt es, dass sich heute am Stadtpark eine ganze Serie großbürgerlicher Villen befindet, die alle um die Jahrhundertwende errichtet wurden. Viele der Häuser stehen unter Denkmalschutz. Eine Sanierung dieser Häuser ist meist aufwändig und erfordert viel Sorgfalt. Die großbürgerliche Villa in der Rathenaustraße wurde 1899 gebaut. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg wurden Balkon und Fassade der Veranda umgestaltet, so dass sich das Gesicht des Hauses völlig verändert hat. Ein Vergleich des historischen Fotos mit dem Zustand des Hauses vor den Sanierungsmaßnahmen macht das Ausmaß dieser Veränderungen deutlich: Anstelle eines kunstvoll gestalteten Schmiedegitters wurde ein Stahlgeländer mit angeschraubten Wellblechplatten als Absturzsicherung am Balkon angebracht. Stuckelemente über den Verandafenstern wurden abgeschlagen und werden jetzt rekonstruiert. Auch die Ochsenaugen-Gauben sind nicht mehr vorhanden und werden nach historischem Vorbild nachgebaut. // Für die straßenseitige Sanierung der Jugendstilvilla hat die PossehlStiftung € 40.000,00 zur Verfügung gestellt.

At the end of the nineteenth century, the Lübeck City Park was developed just outside the City gates. The beginning of this work also entrained a development of the surrounding road network: a new residential quarter was created. Every new construction item required approval. Houses were not allowed to have more than two floors plus an attic; an iron grid fence on the street side was mandatory. This is the story of how a whole series of villas of the high bourgeoisie came to be built at the City Park, all of which originate from the turn of the nineteenth-twentieth centuries. Many of the houses are under monument protection. Restoring and renovating these houses is usually costly in both time and financial terms and requires a great deal of care. The high bourgeoisie villa on the Rathenaustraße was built in 1899. After WWII, the balcony and façade of the veranda were modified, so that the aspect of the house was entirely changed. A comparison of the historic photos with the condition the house was in before the restoration and renovation measures clearly shows the magnitude of these changes: instead of an artfully designed forged iron lattice, a steel balustrade with screwed-on corrugated iron sheeting as a security measure was installed in the balcony. Stucco elements over the veranda windows had been struck off and are now being reconstructed. The bullseye dormers are also no longer there, and are being rebuilt following the historical prototype. // The Possehl Foundation made € 40,000.00 available for the street-side recon struction and renovation of the Art Nouveau villa.

Sanierungen auf der Lübecker Altstadtinsel Reconstruction and renovation on the Lübeck Old City Island Charakteristisch für das Lübecker Stadtbild sind die sogenannten Rippenstraßen, die vom Mittelpunkt der Stadt um den Marktplatz, das Rathaus und die Marienkirche hinab zum Wasser führen, das die Altstadtinsel umgibt. Sie sind parallel zueinander – wie Rippen – angeordnet. Insbesondere auf der östlichen Seite der Altstadt sind diese Straßen besonders gut erhalten. Ihre Namen sind jahrhundertealt und verweisen oft auf die Handwerker, die sich dort im Mittelalter angesiedelt hatten, wie die Fleischhauerstraße oder die Glockengießerstraße. Hier stehen fast alle Häuser unter Denkmalschutz. Doch eine museale Atmosphäre herrscht hier nicht vor. Im Gegenteil: Die einzigartige Architektur lockt Geschäftstreibende und Besucher. Hier pulsiert das Stadtleben mit vielen kleinen attraktiven Geschäften und Cafés – ein lebendiges Gegengewicht zum austauschbaren Erscheinungsbild vieler Stadtzentren mit seinen Geschäftsketten.

Characteristic for the Lübeck city image are what are called the Rippenstraßen, the slightly curving streets that run from the centre of the Old City to the waterside forming the Old City island leading around the market place, the town hall and St. Mary’s church. On one side they lead to the Trave river, and on the other, to the Canal. They are arranged in a parallel pattern, like ribs. In particular on the eastern side of the Old City, these streets have been especially well maintained. Their names are centuries old and often refer to the artisans who had settled there in the Middle Ages, such as the Fleischhauerstraße [Butcher’s Street] or the Glockengießerstraße [Bell Founders’ Street]. Most of these houses are under monument preservation orders. And yet, there is no museum atmosphere here. On the contrary: the unique architecture attracts both business owners and visitors. Here, the life of the City vibrates with many small attractive shops and cafés – a lively counterweight to the exchangeable image of many city centres with their endless chain stores.
Das typische Lübecker Dielenhaus mit Vorderhaus, Seitenflügel und Querhaus wurde im Jahr 1289 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. Alte Brandmauern aus dieser Zeit sind noch erhalten. Über die Jahrhunderte erfuhr das Haus zahlreiche Um- und Ausbauten, die die Statik des Gebäudes veränderten und heute gefährden. Um 1820 erhielt das denkmalgeschützte Haus eine klassizistische Fassade, die das Erscheinungsbild heute prägt. Eine umfangreiche Sanierung eines Hauses mit dieser Geschichte vom Dachstuhl bis zum Kellergewölbe erfordert Mut, Geduld und Durchhaltevermögen. Die Possehl-Stiftung fördert ausschließlich den sogenannten denkmalpflegerischen Mehraufwand, sie beteiligt sich also an den Mehrkosten, die dadurch entstehen, dass Auflagen der Denkmalpflege erfüllt werden können. // Für das Haus in der Fleischhauerstraße hat die Stiftung € 80.000,00 zur Verfügung gestellt.

Die Fleischhauerstraße ist eine der ältesten Lübecker Straßen. Hier waren im Mittelalter die fleischverarbeitenden Berufe ansässig: die Küter (Schlachter) und die Fleischhauer (Fleischer). The typical Lübeck Hall House with its front house, side wings and transversal house was first found recorded in 1289. Old firewalls dating from this time are still preserved. Over the centuries, the house experienced numerous rebuilds and extensions that modified, and nowadays endanger, the structural integrity of the building. In around 1820, the monument protected house was given a Classicist façade, which today characterises its external image. An extensive restoration of a house with this history, from attic to cellar vaults, requires courage, patience and staying power. The Possehl Foundation sponsors only what is referred to as the additional costs of monument maintenance; it therefore contributes to the supplementary costs resulting from the fact that special requirements must be met to fulfil the demands of monument maintenance. // The Possehl Foundation made € 80,000.00 available for the house in the Fleischhauerstraße.

Sanierung zweier Häuser an der Aegidienkirche Reconstruction of two houses situated by the Aegidien Church Gegenüber der Aegidienkirche, in der Schildstraße 16 und 18, liegen zwei Häuser des 16./17. Jahrhunderts, deren Form besonders authentisch erhalten ist. Leider drohten beide Häuser vollständig, bis hin zur Unbewohnbarkeit, zu verfallen. Die neuen Besitzer sanieren die Häuser in enger Abstimmung mit dem Amt für Denkmalpflege: Das Innere der Häuser ist von bau- und kunsthistorischer Bedeutung, da es Aufschluss bietet über Bauweise, Wohnkultur sowie die sozialen und ökonomischen Verhältnisse Lübecks. Doch auch die Sanierung der Außenfassade beider Häuser ist sehr aufwändig: Das Dach muss neu gedeckt werden und historische Gaubenfenster werden wiederhergestellt. Alle Außenfenster werden ebenfalls nach den Vorgaben der Dankmalpflege restauriert. Darüber hinaus wird die gesamte sichtbare Fachwerkfassade überarbeitet, neu verfugt und teils auch ersetzt. Vorder- und Rückfassade der Häuser wird mit Muschelkalk neu verputzt. // An der Sanierung beider Häuser hat sich die Possehl-Stiftung mit € 120.000,00 beteiligt.

Facing the Aegidien Church, in Schildstraße 16 and 18, there are two houses dating back to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that have been kept in a particularly authentic form and condition. Unfortunately, both houses risked to decay to the point of not being habitable any more. The new owners are renovating them in close coordination with the Office for Landmark Conservation. The inside of the houses has structural and art historical significance, as it provides insights into the construction methods, the home décor as well as the social and economic situation in Lübeck at the time. But even the reconstruction and renovation of the external aspect of the two houses is extremely costly: the roof needs to be replaced, and historic dormer windows must be rebuilt. All outside windows are also being restored in accordance with the requirements of the Office for Landmark Conservation. Moreover, the entire visible half-timbered façade is being worked over, newly repointed and partially also replaced. The front and back façades of the houses are being newly rendered with shell limestone. // The Possehl Foundation has participated in the renovation of both houses with a total of € 120,000.00.

Bauspielplatz Roter Hahn – Geschichtserlebnisraum Lübeck Red Rooster Construction Playground – Lübeck Historical Experience Space Der Verein Bauspielplatz Roter Hahn bietet auf einem Areal von 12 Hektar Kinder- und Jugendarbeit, experimentelle Archäologie und tiergestützte Pädagogik an. Hier können historische Handwerkstechniken erlernt oder einfach die historische Atmosphäre genossen werden. Ein Naturkindergarten ist hier ebenfalls zu Hause. Der Bauspielplatz ist inzwischen Stadtteiltreffpunkt und Anziehungspunkt für Lübecker und Touristen gleichermaßen. Viele vom Aussterben bedrohte Haus- und Nutztierrassen wie Englische Parkrinder oder Schleswiger Kaltblutpferde leben auf dem Areal. Seit Eröffnung des Bauspielplatzes im Sommer 1999 beschäftigt sich der Trägerverein mit dem Nachbau frühmittelalterlicher Gebäude mit entsprechender Umwelt. Bisher sind ein wikingerzeitliches Grubenhaus, eine Schmiede, zwei Gärten, ein slawisches Blockhaus, ein Pfostenhaus mit angedeutetem Blockbohlenweg, ein wikingerzeitliches Langhaus, eine Holz-Stabkirche als erstes Bauwerk einer frühmittelalterlichen Klosteranlage und im zweiten Bauabschnitt eine sogenannte „Zehnt-Scheune“ als neuer Tierstall entstanden. Die Verbindung von offener Kinder- und Jugendarbeit mit Angeboten aus dem Bereich der angewandten/experimentellen Archäologie ist in Deutschland einzigartig. Im Sommer 2006 wurde mit dem Bau der mittelalterlichen Klosteranlage begonnen. Der Glockenturm und die Klosterkirche sind bereits fertig. Die Steine für die Bauten werden teilweise in der historischen Ziegelei mit Ofen und Trockenschuppen selbst gebrannt. Auch die angewandten Bautechniken sind historisch. // Die PossehlStiftung hat in den vergangenen zehn Jahren € 1,76 Mio. für den Geschichtserlebnisraum zur Verfügung gestellt,

On a 12 hectare area, the Bauspielplatz Roter Hahn Association offers a com bination of child and youth work, experimental archaeology and animal based educational approaches. The space allows for learning historical tradesman techniques or simply for soaking in it’s special atmosphere, and also houses a nature kindergarten. In the meantime, the construction playground has become an attraction and neighbourhood meeting point for Lübeck citizens and tourists alike, not least thanks to the many kinds of domestic and farm animals such as English White Park Cattleand Schleswig cold blood horses that live on the complex. Since the construction playground was inaugurated in the summer of 1999, the carrier organisation has devoted itself to creating authentic replicas of buildings dating from the early Middle Ages together with the appropriate surroundings. To date, a pit house from Viking times, a smithy, two gardens, a Slavic blockhouse, a post-built house with the beginnings of a log path, a longhouse from Viking times, a wooden staff church – the first building of an Early Medieval monastery complex – have been accomplished, and, in the second construction segment, what used to be called a “tithe barn” was built as a new stable. This combination of open child and youth work and offerings in the realm of applied/ experimental archaeology is unique in Germany. The summer of 2006 saw the start of the construction of the medieval monastery complex; the bell tower and the monastery church have already been completed. Some of the brickwork for the buildings was fired in the historic brickyard, using its furnace and drying shed, by the participants themselves, who also employ construction techniques rooted in historical tradition. // Over the last ten years, the Possehl Foundation has supported the historical experience space with € 1.76 million.

Interkulturelle Begegnungsstätte Intercultural meeting place Unterhalb des Lübecker Domes, im Zentrum der Stadt, hat die Interkulturelle Begegnungsstätte seit 15 Jahren im Haus der Kulturen ihren Sitz. Der Bedarf in Lübeck ist groß: Mehr als 42.000 Migrantinnen und Migranten, also über 20% der Bevölkerung, aus über 152 Ländern prägen mit ihrer Kultur, ihrer Religion und Sprache, ihren ästhetischen Vorstellungen und ihren Künstlern die Stadt. Das Haus bietet Raum für Podi umsdiskussionen, Kurse, Ausstellungen, Informationsveranstaltungen, Tagungen, Fortbildungsseminare, Länderkunde abende und Integrationskurse. Es ist Anlaufstelle für alle, die an einem „Gesprächskreis Deutsch für Migrantinnen und Migranten“ teilnehmen, die Migrationssozialberatung in Anspruch nehmen, im spanischen Chor mitsingen oder ihren Kindern die „Zeichen- und Malwerkstatt“, die Hausaufgabenhilfe oder einen Trommel-Workshop nahebringen möchten, sich nach einem Besuch des Kultur-Ladens eine Bilderausstellung im Haus ansehen oder auf einem internationalen Musik- und Tanzabend ausgelassen mitfeiern wollen. // Bei der Organisation wird die Einrichtung von drei Jugendlichen, die dort ein Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr absolvieren, unterstützt. Die Begegnungsstätte gewinnt durch die Jugendlichen frische Perspektiven und neue Anregungen für ihre Arbeit. Eine dieser Stellen hat die Stiftung 2015 mit € 5.000,00 gefördert.
For the last 15 years, the Intercultural Meeting Place has been based in the Haus der Kulturen just north of Lübeck Cathedral, in the city centre. The need in Lübeck is great: more than 42,000 immigrants, men, women and children, i.e. more than 20% of the population, originating from more than 152 countries, contribute to shaping the life of the city with their cultures, their religions and their languages, their aesthetic perceptions and the work of the artists originating from various backgrounds. The House of Cultures provides spaces for podium discussions, information events, exhibitions, courses, conferences, further training seminars, geography evenings and integration courses. It is the first point of contact for all those who take part in a “German for Migrants” conversation circle, who get social services advice for migrants, who sing in the Spanish choir, or who would like to make their children familiar with activities as diverse as the drawing and painting workshop, the homework assistanceservice or a drumming workshop, as well as for those who enjoy a painting exhibition after visiting the Culture Shop, or who simply want to experience the fun of an international music and dance evening. The organisational aspects of the Intercultural Meeting Place are supported by three young people who are completing a voluntary social services year in the institution. // Their participation is an asset for the meeting facility, as it provides it with new perspectives and motivations for its work. In 2015, the Foundation sponsored one of these positions to the tune of € 5,000.00.

Lübeck 1500 Lübeck 1500 2015 feierte Lübeck 500 Jahre St. Annen-Kloster und 100 Jahre St. Annen-Museum mit der bislang größten Ausstellung der Hansestadt. Im Museumsquartier St. Annen und den Lübecker Altstadtkirchen wurde die einzigartige Zeitspanne von 1470 – 1540 lebendig. In diesen Jahrzehnten war Lübeck eine der mächtigsten Städte im deutschsprachigen Raum, größer und einflussreicher als Hamburg, München oder Wien. Noch bis ins 17. Jahrhundert war Lübeck unter dem Beinamen „die Unvergleichliche“ bekannt. Die Stadt bot als führende Macht der Hanse beste Voraussetzungen für die Ansiedlung von Künstlern. Bildschnitzer, Maler und Goldschmiede statteten die Kirchen mit prächtigen Kunstwerken aus, konnten sie aber von Lübeck aus auch im gesamten Ostseeraum verbreiten. Prächtige Flügelaltäre, Tafelgemälde, Skulpturen und Goldschmiedekunst zeugen von dieser großen Kunstepoche. Mit der Reformation und ihrer Ablehnung der Bilderverehrung änderte sich die Lage: Das künstlerische Schaffen konzentrierte sich nun fast ausschließlich auf die Kunst des Buchdrucks. In der Schau sind neben den Lübecker Kunstschätzen Exponate aus Berlin, Nürnberg, Hamburg, Mailand, Kopenhagen und Stockholm zu sehen. // Die Possehl-Stiftung hat die Jahrhundertausstellung mit €500.000,00 möglich gemacht.

In 2015, Lübeck celebrated the 500th anniversary of the Saint Annen convent and the centenary of the Saint Annen museum with the most significant exhi bition in our Hanseatic city to date. The museum quarter St. Annen and the Lübeck Old City churches brought the unique period ranging from 1470 – 1540 to life. In these decades, Lübeck was one of the most powerful cities in the German speaking region, larger and more influential than Hamburg, Munich or Vienna. In fact, Lübeck was known as “the Incomparable” well into the seventeenth century. As the leading power within the Hansa, the city offered the best prerequisites for a place of settlement for artists. While carvers, graphic artists and goldsmiths furnished Lübeck churches with splendid artworks, they were also able to disseminate them into the entire Baltic area. Superb wing altars, panel paintings, sculptures and goldsmith’s designs bear witness to this magnificent art period. The Reformation and its doctrine of iconoclasm changed the situation suddenly and drastically: artistic creation now concentrated almost exclusively on book printing. In addition to the Lübeck art treasures, the show also includes exhibits from Berlin, Nuremberg, Hamburg, Milan, Copenhagen and Stockholm. // The Possehl Foundation made the centenary exhibition possible by means of a total donation of € 500,000.00.

Bücher zur Lübecker Stadtgeschichte gibt es unzählige. Ebenso Stadtpläne, alte und neue Stadtansichten oder auch Stadtführer. Mit „Lübeck4me“ wird ein ganz persönliches, virtuelles Gedächtnis der Stadt Lübeck zum Mitnehmen auf dem Smartphone entstehen. Bürger und Besucher sind zum Mitmachen aufgefordert und können sich an der Spurensuche beteiligen. Welche Geschichten, welche Geheimnisse liegen noch verborgen in den Kellern der Hansestadt? Oder in den Erinnerungen der Menschen? Träger des Projektes ist die Fachhochschule Lübeck. „Lübeck 4me“ hilft, die Geschichte Lübecks zu bewahren – für Besucher, Bürger sowie deren Kinder und Enkel. Neben historischen Karten, Bildern und Fakten geht es auch um die Gegenwart. Stadtrundgänge, Pläne für den öffentlichen Nahverkehr oder ein Gastronomieverzeichnis beispielsweise finden ebenso ihren Platz finden aktuelle Stadtpläne, in denen jedes Gebäude mit seiner Historie verzeichnet sein wird. Das Projekt wird für Mobilgeräte konzipiert und lässt sich unterwegs über die Smartphone-App nutzen. Die fertige AppVersion wird 2016 folgen. // „Lübeck4me“ wird von der Possehl-Stiftung mit € 910.000,00 gefördert.

Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Konzertreihe Daniel Hopes Familienstücke Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival Concert series Daniel Hopes Family Pieces Das Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival ist eines der größten klassischen Musikfestivals der Welt. Es findet seit 1986 jährlich in den Sommermonaten an den unterschiedlichsten Spielorten statt. In klassischen Konzertsälen erklingt Musik ebenso wie in Scheunen, Kirchen, Museen, Bibliotheken und sogar alten Hafenanlagen oder Flughäfen. In Lübeck hatte im Festivaljahr 2015 eine neue Veranstaltungsform Premiere, die die Besucher in doppelter Hinsicht zu einem familiären Musikerlebnis einlud. Daniel Hope, bekannter Geiger und Autor einer reizvollen Autobiographie mit dem Titel „Familienstücke. Eine Spurensuche“, hatte mit dem Festival ein elfstündiges KonzertDaniel Hopes Familienstücke – Ein programm entwickelt, das sichLübeck-Musikfest dem Thema Familie widmete. Ein ganzes Wochenende lang wurde die Lübecker Altstadt mit Wenn man einmal anfängt, in seiner eigenen Geschichte zu graben, kann man so manche Musik erfüllt an Orten wie rundherum mit altenwieBüchern Überraschung erleben, und nicht selten liest sichdem dann die eigene Familiengeschichte ein spannendes Buch. The Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival is one of the most important classical music festivals in the world. Since 1986, it has taken place annually in the summer at the most varied venues. In classical concert halls, music works its magic just as well as in barns, churches, museums, libraries and even old port facilities or airports. In Lübeck, the Festival Year 2015 saw the premiere of a new type of event that doubly invited visitors to a family music adventure. Daniel Hope, well-known violinist and author of a charming autobiography entitled “Familienstücke. Eine Spurensuche” [Family Pieces. Following Clues], had, together with the Festival, developed an eleven-hour concert programme dedicated to the subject of “family”. For an entire weekend, the Old City of Lübeck was filled with music in places like the antique book lined Scharbausaal of the City Library, the Town Hall’s Audience Hall, the just inaugurated European Hansa Museum and the EvangelicalReformed church, built in the Classicist style. Musically speaking, the familial groups concerned are the Mann, Bach and Schumann families. // This series of special concerts was supported by the Possehl Foundation with € 150,000.00.

Über 6.000 Ehrenamtliche kümmern sich um 35.000 Jugendliche bundesweit. Sie erzählen ihre eigene Geschichte und ermutigen durch ihr persönliches Beispiel. Es gibt Offene Treffen, Sprechstunden, Info-Veranstaltungen an Schulen, ein Info-Telefon sowie persönliches Mentoring. Since 2007, ArbeiterKind.de has been encouraging highly talented students from non-academic families nationwide to engage in university studies. In Germany, social background is decisive for one’s educational curriculum: 77 of 100 children from families with an academic background pursue university studies, while only 23 children of families without a higher education find their way into a university. This initiative motivates secondary school students to take up university studies and accompanies them in everyday matters of student life. In the meantime, ArbeiterKind.de has grown into a network comprising 75 city groups. More than 6,000 volunteers take care of 35,000 young people. Counsellors tell their own stories and encourage by their personal examples. There are open meetings, consultations, informational events in schools, an info hotline and personal mentoring sessions. Unfortunately, for the time being, only four of the 75 cities and regions supported by ArbeiterKind.deare located in Schleswig-Holstein. // The Possehl Foundation has made € 9,000.00 available to enable ArbeiterKind.de to carry on its work also in Lübeck.

Seitdem lernen 40 Kinder und Jugendliche wöchentlich im Gruppenunterricht Gitarre, Geige, türkische Laute und weitere Instrumente. Die Anfänger werden von Profis unterstützt: Die Lehrer und Lübecker Musiker aus aller Welt spielen im Stadtteil-Orchester mit. Aus dem Stadtteilorchester ging eine Rap-Gruppe hervor, die Keimzelle der nun aufgebauten HipHop-Academy. Viele Jugendliche fühlen sich der HipHop-Kultur verbunden. In der Academy lernen sie bei Profis der Szene erste Tipps und Tricks. Sie starten mit einem wöchentlichen Kurs in ihrem Stadtteil, in der Schule oder im Jugendzentrum. Besonders motivierte und engagierte Jugendliche qualifizieren sich auf Battles und in einem fünftägigen Sommercamp für weitere Kurse. Regelmäßig entwickeln sie Shows, in denen sie ihr Können präsentieren. Das Angebot umfasst derzeit Rap, Graffiti, Breakdance, Gesang und wird DJing, Beatbox und Producing hinzunehmen. // Für die ersten drei Jahre der HipHop-Academy hat die Possehl-Stiftung € 75.000,00 zur Verfügung gestellt.
Four years ago, the support of the Possehl Foundation made it possible to create the Intercultural Neighbourhood Orchestra in the Lübeck district of Eichholz. Since then, 40 children and young people have been taking weekly group lessons in guitar, violin, Turkish lute and other instruments. Beginners are supported by professionals: the teachers as well as Lübeck musicians from all over the world play in the Neighbourhood Orchestra. The Neighbourhood Orchestra generated a Rap group, the nucleus of the now assembled HipHop Academy. Many young people feel a natural attraction to the HipHop culture. In the Academy, young people learn the first tips and tricks from professionals in the scene. They start with a weekly course in their own neighbourhood, in school or in the youth centre; especially motivated and committed young people qualify for additional courses on Battles and in a five-day summer camp. They regularly develop shows in which they present their abilities. The offering currently comprises rap, graffiti, breakdance and singing, and will, in the future, add DJ-ing, beatbox and producing. // The Possehl Foundation is providing € 75,000.00 to support the first three years of the HipHop Academy.

Im TheaterFigurenMuseum und im Figurentheater wird die faszinierende Welt des Puppentheaters lebendig; eine enge Zusammenarbeit verbindet die beiden Institutionen miteinander. Das 1982 gegründete TheaterFigurenMuseum besitzt eine Sammlung ersten Ranges an Theaterfiguren, Requisiten, Kulissen, Plakaten und Musikinstrumenten aus Asien, Afrika und Europa. Zur dieser Sammlung gehören sowohl indische Schattenfiguren, afrikanische Puppen und Masken, Marionetten und Puppen aus Myanmar und China, als auch Nachlässe von Puppenspieler-Dynastien aus Deutschland. Im Sommer 2015 stellte das Museum in der Sonderausstellung „Sapperlot! Der Räuber Hotzenplotz auf Achse“ die Kinderliteratur Otfried Preußlers im Spiegel des Figurentheaters vor – und verzeichnete damit einen Besucherrekord. Mit Portraits international tätiger Puppenspieler des Fotografen Christophe Loiseau eröffnete das Museum im November seine erste Fotoausstellung. Im Herbst und Winter wurden außerdem die beliebten Taschenlampenführungen durch die dunkle Ausstellung fortgeführt und Bürgermeister Bernd Saxe las anlässlich des bundesweiten Vorlesetags am 20.11. eine Geschichte von Max Kruse vor.

A medieval lane in the historic Old Town conceals two unsuspected cultural treasures in the historical merchants’ houses that line the little street. The fascinating world of the puppet theatre comes alive in the TheaterFiguren Museum and in the Figurentheater, two institutions that are narrowly connected by their close collaboration. The TheaterFigurenMuseum includes a first-class collection of various types of theatre figures and props, scenery backdrops and posters as well as musical instruments from Asia, Africa and Europe. The collection comprises Indian shadow figures, African dolls and masks, marionettes and puppets from Myanmar and China as well as bequests from German puppeteer dynasties. In the summer of 2015, in the “Sapperlot! Der Räuber Hotzenplotz auf Achse” [“Bandit Hotzenplotz on the Move” – a Punch and Judy show] exhibition, the museum presented the children’s stories authored by Otfried Preußler as mirrored by the puppet theatre – and registered an attendance record. The museum inaugurated its first photo exhibition in November 2015
Im Figurentheater direkt nebenan kann man das ganze Jahr über alle Spielarten modernen Figurentheaters (Marionetten, Tisch- und Stabfiguren, Schattentheater, Handpuppen und Performance) auf der Bühne erleben. Anlässlich Lübecker Gedenkaktivitäten zum Bombenangriff Palmarum 1942 rief das Figurentheater 2013 die Reihe „Propaganda Überleben Widerstand“ mit anspruchsvollen Inszenierungen für Schüler und Erwachsene ins Leben. 2015 beteiligten sich hier nun auch Oberstufenschüler kreativ mit einer Szenencollage zum Thema Demokratie; das Gastspiel „Engel mit nur einem Flügel“ von Ralf Kiekhöfer wird auch 2016 wieder eingeladen. Zum Wochenende „Junges Figurentheater“ traten die beiden Stuttgarter Hochschulabsolventen Lehmann&Wenzel mit ihrer Rockoper „Freischütz“ auf – Puppen und Objekte, Rockmusik, Weber live gesungen und schräger Humor verwandelten den Theatersaal in ein Experimentierfeld. Der Kooperationspartner KOBALT Figurentheater Lübeck inszenierte das Musical „LINIE 1“, mit dem seit 1986 das Berliner Grips-Theater Theatergeschichte schreibt. Diese Inszenierung mit drei SpielerInnen und 41 Figuren war so erfolgreich, dass sie ins Repertoire übernommen wird.

The highly popular, conducted flashlight discovery tours through the darkened exhibition were also continued in the autumn and winter, and on the occasion of the Germany-wide Reading Day on 20 November, Mayor Bernd Saxe presented a story by Max Kruse. In the Figurentheater directly next door, all variants of modern puppet shows (marionettes, table and rod puppets, shadow play, hand puppetry and performance spectacles) come alive on the stage. On the occasion of the Lübeck memorial activities in relation to the Palmarum bombing in 1942, in 2013 the Figurentheater brought the “Propaganda Überleben Widerstand” [Surviving Propaganda Resistance] series to life with sophisticated productions for young people and adults. In 2015, sixth-form students also creatively participated in the memorial with a tableau collage about democracy; the guest performance “Angels with only one wing” by Ralf Kiekhöfer was invited to repeat its show in 2016. The “Junges Figurentheater” [Young Puppet Shows] saw the performance of the Stuttgart university graduates Lehmann & Wenzel’s rock opera “Freischütz” [based on “The Marksman” by – Carl Maria von Weber, the first important German Romantic opera] combining puppets and objects, rock music, Weber sung live and whacky humour that transformed the auditorium into an experimental arena. The cooperation partner KOBALT Figurentheater Lübeck staged the „LINIE 1” musical, with which Berlin‘s Grips-Theater [Savvy Theatre] has been writing performance history since 1986. The show helped commemorate the memorial date of 3 October, on which West Berlin foundered together with East Berlin in 1989, which seems to be falling into oblivion these days. Europäisches Hansemuseum Lübeck gGmbH European Hansemuseum Lübeck gGmbH Seit der Eröffnung hat sich das Hansemuseum zu einem beliebten Anziehungspunkt in der Lübecker Altstadt entwickelt: Im Dezember konnte bereits der 100.000ste Besucher begrüßt werden. Zur ersten Museumsnacht im August kamen mehr als 2.000 interessierte Besucher und Besucherinnen zum Museumsareal, um einen Einblick in die Ausstellung zu erhalten und die kulinarischen Angebote des Museumsrestaurants NORD auszuprobieren. Und auch für kulturelle Veranstaltungen wurde das Haus geöffnet: Zuletzt gastierte das NDR Kultur Foyerkonzert in den neuen Räumen des Hansemuseums, bei dem das Trio Clarone ausgewählte Stücke von Bach bis Mozart furios präsentierte. In Zukunft will sich das Hansemuseum verstärkt als kultureller Treffpunkt etablieren und auch Lesungen, Vorträge und Konzerte anbieten. Außerdem steht in 2016 ein Highlight an: Das Museum wird Teil des ersten Lübecker Hanse-Kulturfestivals und gestaltet das Programm für die unterschiedlichen Veranstaltungen vom 20. bis 22. Mai maßgeblich mit.
Since its inauguration, the Hansemuseum has developed into a highly popular attraction in the Old City of Lübeck: the month of December welcomed the 100,000th visitor. The first museum night in August was attended by more than 2,000 interested visitors of the museum complex seeking to get an impression of the exhibition and to savour the culinary offerings of the museum restaurant NORD. The museum was also opened for cultural events: The most recent guest in the new rooms of the Hansemuseum was the NDR Kultur Foyerkonzert, with the Trio Clarone playing selected pieces by composers ranging from Bach to Mozart with great brio. In future, the Hansemuseum will devote greater energy to establishing itself as a cultural meeting point also offering conferences, lectures and concerts. In addition, 2016 promises a highlight: the Museum will become part of the first Lübeck Hanseatic Culture Festival and is, accordingly, helping to organise the programme for the various events that will take from 20 to 22 May. In the museum, the combination of impressive spatial design, cabinets with valuable original objects and interactive museum technology communicate an extensive, informative and comprehensive image of the Hanseatic world and its historical ramifications, which reach all the way into the present.

Ausgewählte Meilensteine der Hansegeschichte sind mit Nowgorod, Lübeck, Brügge, Bergen und London dargestellt. Die Besucherinnen und Besucher erfahren von Wagnis und Aufstieg, von einer Welt in Reichtum und Macht, von Misserfolg und Kampf sowie vom Glauben, der alles Handeln beeinflusste. Auch der nach dem Niedergang der Hanse entstehende Mythos des Kaufmanns- und Städtebundes wird angesprochen. Über die neu erschlossene archäologische Grabungsstätte, die Einblicke in die früheste Besiedlung Lübecks gibt, und das aufwendig restaurierte Burgkloster präsentiert das Hansemuseum zudem herausragende Aspekte der Stadt- und Kulturgeschichte. Diese reichen bis in das 20. Jahrhundert und erinnern an die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus, als sich im Burgkloster Gericht und Gefängnis befanden.

Visitors find out about a world of daring and ascent, riches and power, failure and struggle as well as about the beliefs that influenced all types of trade. Also addressed is the myth of the coalition of merchants and cities that arose after the decline of the Hansa. The Hansemuseum further presents outstanding aspects of the history of Lübeck and its culture by means of the new archaeological excavation site that provides insights into the earliest settlement period of the city. The lavishly restored castle convent bears witness to turbulent times in the twentieth century, when under the Nazi regime it housed both a court and a jail.

1850 wird Emil Possehl als erster Sohn des Lübecker Kaufmanns Ludwig Possehl in der Beckergrube geboren. In seinem Elternhaus werden auch die Geschäfte der Firma L. Possehl & Co., einer Eisen-, Blech- und Kohlenhandlung, abgewickelt. Bis heute befindet sich hier der Sitz der Unternehmensgruppe. 1873 tritt Emil Possehl in den väterlichen Betrieb ein und ist wenige Jahre später größter Erzhändler Europas. Durch den Zukauf von Unternehmen aus dem produzierenden und verarbeitenden Gewerbe in Russland, Schweden und Norwegen wird aus dem Lübecker Kaufmann ein Industrieller, dessen Verbindungen von Europa bis nach Übersee reichen. Unter seiner Führung steigt der Warenumsatz um das Fünfzigfache. Als Emil Possehl 1915 sein Testament macht, wird sein Vermögen auf 100 Mio. Mark geschätzt. Von Zeitgenossen wird Emil Possehl als schroff und abweisend geschildert. Seine ungewöhnliche Arbeitskraft lässt ihn zäh und unbeirrbar seine Ziele verfolgen. Als Unternehmer zeichnet er sich durch Disziplin und Weitblick aus. 1901 wird er in den Lübecker Senat gewählt, eine Auszeichnung, die ihm viel bedeutet hat. Im Rahmen seines politischen Engagements setzt er sich für den Ausbau der Verkehrsinfrastruktur ein und zählt zu den Initiatoren des Elbe-Lübeck-Kanals.

Emil Possehl was born in Lübeck in 1850 as the first son of Lübeck merchant Ludwig Possehl. His parental home at the Beckergrube was also the business headquarters for L. Possehl & Co., an iron, sheet metal, and coal merchant. The ancestral family home continues to be used as the Head Office for the Possehl Group of Companies. In 1873 Emil Possehl joined his father’s business, becoming the largest ore trader in Europe a few years later. By taking over companies from the production and processing sectors in Russia, Sweden, and Norway, the Lübeck merchant became an industrialist with European and intercontinental connections. Under his leadership, sales of the commodities he traded rose fifty-fold. When Emil Possehl made his will in 1915 his fortune was estimated at 100 million Marks.

Durch die Expansion nach Norden und Osten möchte er Lübeck, der ehemaligen Königin der Hanse, wieder Glanz verleihen. Es entspricht Emil Possehls hanseatischem Selbstverständnis, bereits zu Lebzeiten an die reiche Tradition des Stiftungswesens in Lübeck anzuknüpfen, die in die Blütezeit der Stadt im Mittelalter zurückreicht. Ohne seine großzügige Förderung wäre das Theater an der Beckergrube geschlossen und die Löwenapotheke, das älteste gotische Bürgerhaus der Stadt, abgebrochen worden. Seine Stiftungen zu Lebzeiten sind jedoch niemals reine Geldgeschenke sondern immer mit Bedingungen verbunden. Da seine Ehe mit der Schauspielerin Wilhelmine Schönherr kinderlos bleibt, setzt er in seinem Testament die Possehl-Stiftung zur Erbin seines gesamten Firmenvermögens ein. Sie soll der „Förderung alles Guten und Schönen in Lübeck“ dienen. Die Possehl-Stiftung ist auch in einer von Stiftungen reich gesegneten Stadt wie Lübeck von einer bis dahin unbekannten Größenordnung.

His contemporaries described him as gruff and abrasive. His unusual energy was a remarkable asset in his tough and unflinching pursuit of his goals. As an entrepreneur, his main qualities were discipline and vision. In 1901 he was elected to the Lübeck Senate, a distinction that held a great deal of meaning for him. Within the scope of his political commitment he supported the development of the transport infrastructure, and was one of the initiators of the ElbeLübeck Canal. By expanding the City to the north and east, Possehl wished to generate a renaissance for Lübeck, the former Queen of the Hanseatic League. Emil Possehl‘s Hanseatic convictions led him to become involved with Lübeck’s rich tradition of charitable foundations, which originated in the City’s heyday in the Middle Ages, already during his lifetime. Without his generous support, the Theater at the Beckergrube would have been closed, and the Löwenapo theke[Lion’s Pharmacy], the oldest Gothic patrician mansion in the City, would have been torn down. However, the grants Possehl made during his lifetime were never pure gifts of money, but were always linked to conditions intended to serve Lübeck’s development. As his marriage with actress Wilhel mine Schönherr remained childless, he bequeathed all his business assets to the Possehl Foundation. The Foundation was intended to serve the “the furtherance of all that is good and beautiful in Lübeck“. Even in a City so richly blessed with charitable foundations, the Possehl Foundation has attained a magnitude heretofore unknown.
Emil Possehls Testament entsprechend trägt der Stiftungsvorstand Sorge für die Vermögenserhaltung und Vermögensverwaltung des Unternehmens. So hat der Stifter weitsichtig die Voraussetzung dafür geschaffen, dass der Fortbestand seiner Unternehmensgruppe gesichert und gleichzeitig die Unternehmenserträge seiner Heimatstadt zu Gute kommen können. Bis heute hat der Wunsch Emil Possehls, das „Gute und Schöne“ in Lübeck zu fördern, in nahezu allen Lebensbereichen der Hansestadt Spuren hinterlassen.

Die Unternehmensgruppe besteht aktuell aus acht voneinander unabhängigen Geschäftsbereichen, mit einem Schwerpunkt in der Investitionsgüterindustrie. The Group currently consists of eight mutually independent divisions with emphasis on the capital goods industry.
Unter dem Dach der Management-Holding L. Possehl & Co. mbH bildet die Possehl-Gruppe einen in hanseatischer Tradition geführten Konzern mit mehr als 140 Gesellschaften weltweit. Zusammen erwirtschaften rund 12.000 Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter einen Jahresumsatz von mehr als drei Milliarden Euro. Die Geschicke der Unternehmensgruppe werden aus einer schlanken Holding am Stammsitz in Lübeck gesteuert. Lediglich wenige, für die Entwicklung von Possehl entscheidende zentrale Aufgaben – wie die strategische Ausrichtung der Gruppe – werden von Lübeck aus koordiniert und durchgeführt. Die Führung der operativen Gesellschaften obliegt hingegen den lokalen Geschäftsführungen, die weitreichende Kompetenzen und Verantwortung für das Tagesgeschäft haben. Nur so ist es möglich, einen räumlich so weit verzweigten und diversifiziert aufgestellten Konzern aus einer kleinen Holding heraus zu steuern.

Under the umbrella of the L. Possehl & Co. mbH holding company, the Possehl Group is managed in the Hanseatic tradition, comprising more than 140 companies worldwide. Together, about 12,000 employees generate an annual turnover of more than 3 billion euro. The course of the Group is steered from a slim holding company at the original headquarters in Lübeck. Only a very few centralised tasks that are key for Possehl’s development – such as the Group’s strategic orientation – are coordinated and implemented from Lübeck. The management of the operating companies, on the other hand, is the purview of the local management teams, which have broad competence and responsibility for the day-to-day business. Only this structure allows a group that is geographically so widely spread and also so diversified to be steered from a small holding company.

Unternehmensphilosophie Corporate philosophy
Wir sind eine Unternehmensgruppe, die geprägt ist von Unternehmertum, Tradition und Verantwortung – und das seit nunmehr 168 Jahren. Unsere Werte und Unternehmens philosophie bringen wir mit dem Begriff „Possehl – Die Unternehmergruppe“ zum Ausdruck. Wir verstehen uns als ein Bund von weitgehend eigenständig und verantwortungsbewusst geführten mittelständischen Unternehmen. Wir bewahren die Identität der einzelnen Unternehmen, insbesondere durch die Fortführung der Firmennamen und -kulturen, und unterscheiden uns so von klassischen, zentralisiert geführten Konzernen. Alle Possehl-Gesellschaften verbindet ein starker Zusammenhalt, gegenseitige Unterstützung und das gemeinsame Ziel, nachhaltig und umsichtig zu agieren. In unserem täglichen Handeln pflegen wir einen fairen und verbindlichen Verhaltensstil. Wir wissen, dass zur Erzielung langfristiger und nachhaltiger Erfolge dauerhafte Geschäftsbeziehungen und eine langfristige Bindung der Mitarbeiter an das Unternehmen unerlässlich sind. The path leading to the enterprise as it exists today has transited now 168 years, during which it has always been essential to assert ourselves in a competitive environment and to master challenges as they arose.

We are a group of companies that is characterised by its entrepreneurial spirit, by tradition and responsibility – and this for now 168 years. Our ideals and our corporate philosophy are expressed in the concept “Possehl – The Group of Entrepreneurs”. We see ourselves as an alliance of substantially independently and responsibly managed medium-sized enterprises. We preserve the identity of the individual companies, in particular by maintaining their names and cultures, which differentiatesus from the usual, centrally managed groups. All Possehl companies are united by a strong sense of cohesion, solidarity and the common goal to act prudently and sustainably. In our daily conduct we apply a fair and obliging manner. We know that enduring business relationships and a durable commitment of our staff to the company are essential in order to achieve long-term, sustainable success. Over the last few years, the Possehl Group has experienced strong internal and acquisition driven growth. In 2015 we were able to expand our SME division due to several investments. Generally, we will purchase businesses to hold on to them, further develop them and sustainably grow together with them. In this way we are also an attractive alternative for family managed companies looking for a successive solution that matches their traditional philosophy.
Th e Company and th e Foundation Das Unternehmen und die Stiftung sind eng miteinander verbunden – und das seit fast 100 Jahren. Nicht allein die gesellschaftsrechtliche Verbindung – die Possehl-Stiftung ist die alleinige Gesellschafterin der L. Possehl & Co. mbH – auch die räumliche Nähe tragen zu diesem Verbund bei: Der Hauptsitz von Unternehmen und Stiftung ist von Anbeginn an in der Beckergrube in Lübeck. Ganz entscheidend aber für die enge Verbindung ist die gemeinsame Fortsetzung des unternehmerischen Denkens und Handelns von Emil Possehl, dem Stiftungsgründer. Dieser zog es stets vor, sein Geld in unternehmerische Aktivitäten zu investieren. Damit bildet die Unternehmensgruppe das Grundstockvermögen der Possehl-Stiftung. Eine wesentliche Aufgabe der Unternehmensleitung ist es daher, das Vermögen breit zu streuen, in Unternehmen verschiedener Branchen und Risikostrukturen zu investieren und unangemessene Risiken zu vermeiden. Damit die Possehl-Stiftung gemeinnützige Projekte nachhaltig und verlässlich fördern kann, ist die Erwirtschaftung einer stetigen Dividende durch das Unternehmen unerlässlich. Sowohl das Unternehmen als auch die Stiftung haben bei ihrem Handeln einen weiten Horizont und orientieren sich an langfristigen Zielen.
The Company and the Foundation are closely intertwined, as they have been for almost 100 years. Both the legal connection given by the fact that the Possehl Foundation is the only shareholder of L. Possehl & Co. mbH and also their spatial closeness contribute to this bond: the headquarters of both the Company and the Foundation are, as they have always been, located at the Beckergrube in Lübeck. However, what is entirely key to the close-knit connection between those is the joint continuance of the entrepreneurial thinking and conduct of Emil Possehl, the founder of the Foundation. He always preferred to invest his money in entrepreneurial activities. In this way, the Group of companies generates the core capital of the Possehl Founda tion. An essential task of the corporate management is therefore to achieve a broad diversification when investing in businesses within different industries and with different risk structures while avoiding inappropriate risks. Generating a steady dividend is an essential role the company must fulfil in order to enable the Possehl Foundation sustainably and reliably to support charitable projects. Both the company and the Foundation have broad horizons for their activities and are focused on long-term goals.

Am 1. Mai 1847 gründete Ludwig Possehl in Lübeck seine Firma L. Possehl & Co. und begann mit dem Handel von Eisen und Kohle. On 1 May 1847, Ludwig Possehl founded his company L. Possehl & Co. in Lübeck and started trading in iron and coal.
Ludwig Possehl’s ältester Sohn Emil übernahm die Führung des Unternehmens und baute es zum größten Importeur für schwedische Eisenerze aus. Ludwig Possehl’s oldest son Emil assumed the management of the company and developed it to become the largest importer for Swedish iron ores.
Auch die Possehl-Gruppe wurde durch die beiden Weltkriege stark in Mitleidenschaft gezogen. The Possehl Group was certainly not spared by the two World Wars.
Wiederaufstieg und die Entwicklung zu einem internationalen Konzern. Heute ist Possehl eine moderne, global agierende Unternehmensgruppe mit starken mittelständischen Wurzeln in Deutschland und Europa. The Possehl Group succeeded in regaining its position and in developing into an international concern. Today, Possehl is a modern, global group of companies with strong roots in the middle market both in Germany and in Europe.
