Jack Singer Concert Hall Lighting Information

The Venue The Jack Singer Concert Hall was designed primarily, but not exclusively, for orchestral concerts. As such, the hall is different from the typical roadhouse in a number of ways, and the following may be worth noting: • There is an acoustic canopy suspended above the stage • There is a pipe organ behind the choir loft • The stage floor has a natural wood finish • The sightlines can be an issue due to the seating that runs along the sides and extend upstage, beyond the downstage edge of the stage These design features do not prevent us from presenting many types of performances. We have 20.5” box truss that allows us to hang lighting fixtures, soft goods, etc., over the stage. There are computer-controlled motors permanently rigged in the void above the hall. Our standard truss configuration is illustrated on the next page. Here are some important notes: • Our setting line is the downstage edge of the stage proper at centre (where the stage and centre elevator meet) o The drawing has distances from the setting line to the motor points, to the downstage chord, and to the upstage chord • Truss #5: o Permanently located directly above the upstage wall o Permanently hung with conventional lighting fixtures for the orchestra wash (permanently focused), and circuited from overhead cable reels o Generally not suited for anything else except for softgoods (on DS chord) • Truss #1, #2, #3: Stored assembled in the pit and hung when needed • Truss #1: o Trim height limited to approximately 28’ to avoid interfering with the shot from the cluster o May interfere with the focus of some lighting fixtures in the foh coves o Offstage sections of the truss need to be removed if the sound motors are used • Amplified shows generally need to hang our 36’ tall blacks (typically on truss #5) for acoustic reasons (because of the pipe organ) A note too, about the three stage elevators: • Orchestral shows typically use the elevators as additional stage space (9’8 deep) • Most other shows typically put the elevators at audience level o Three additional rows of seats (Rows AA, BB, CC) can be installed on the elevators. This provides 93 additional seats. For further information about motor points, trussing, softgoods, etc, please see the ‘Rigging Information’ pdf on our website. https://www.artscommons.ca/HostYourEvent/Resources/TechnicalInfo

Jack Singer Concert Hall Lighting Information

Lighting Positions & House Hang Permanent lighting positions are somewhat limited due to the acoustical needs of the hall. As noted above, most trusses are only hung over the stage when needed. While the options for FOH positions are limited, there are typically enough fixtures there to meet a show’s needs. Please see the photos on pages 1 & 2. There is also a plot on page 8. Overhead With the exception of the orchestra wash and the canopy slots, all lighting over the stage is hung on trusses, and therefore temporary. There is no house hang – fixtures are hung on a per-show basis, to meet that show’s needs. Focusing the truss fixtures is done with a hydraulic personnel lift – an Upright UL40 with a maximum platform height of 40’ and an outrigger footprint of 7’10 long x 6’6 wide. A harness is required. Truss-walking is another option for focus, but it must be requested well in advance so that we can arrange for appropriate crew to be on the call. A harness is required. Time will also be needed to setup the horizontal lifeline. Centre FOH Cove This cove is really like a booth with a 16’ wide glass window. There are two pipes, one above the other. They are approx. 60’ above the stage, and 61’ from the stage edge. There are 24 fixtures, 12 per pipe – all 10 degree Source Four 750w. All of them are available for the show to focus – there is no permanent front wash. (We will gladly focus the front wash for you if the show just needs a general wash, we just can’t have one ready to go due to the wide variety of shows we do.) This is also the location of the 2 followspots – Strong Xenon Super Trouper 2000w. Three fixtures on the bottom pipe need to be removed for each followspot that is used. Note that as there are only 20 circuits at this position, these fixtures are three-fered. This leaves all the permanent fixtures individually circuited.

Jack Singer Concert Hall Lighting Information

Side FOH Coves These two coves are somewhat unusual in that they run in an upstage/downstage manner, rather than the usual left/right. Each cove has 14 fixtures – all 10 degree Source Four 575w. All of them are available for the show to focus – there is no permanent front wash. Each cove has 7 pipes running left/right, at approx. 54’ above the stage, each with 2 fixtures. The farthest pipes are approx. 52’ from the stage edge. The nearest pipes are approx. 37’ from the stage edge. The architecture will obstruct some shots, especially for the onstage fixture on each pipe. Most fixtures can’t be focused much past centre stage, some less than that. Note that as there are only 11 circuits per cove, six of the onstage fixtures are twofered into US/DS pairs. These coves are equipped with doors on tracks. For acoustical reasons, these doors should be closed for acoustic shows, unless these fixtures are absolutely necessary. Balcony Rails These pipes hang below the Balcony/Loge level of the Concert Hall. They are approx. 32’ above the stage. They are accessible by extension ladder from the Dress Circle level or choir loft. A harness is required. There are 3 FOH rails, which act like a typical balcony rail position. They are approx. 75’ from the stage edge. Between them, there are 10 fixtures – 4 @ 10 degree Source Four 575w, and 6 @ 15-32 degree Strand SL Zoom. The Zooms have a house focus – they light the main two aisles – they can be refocused for the show, but will need to be restored afterwards. Note that as there are only 6 circuits for these rails, the Zooms are three-fered into 2 circuits. The rails along the sides act like box boom and gallery positions. They start approx. 22’ from the stage edge, and extend most of the way to the back wall. A lot of these fixtures have a permanent house focus, including all of the fixtures over the choir loft, and all the LED fixtures. There are 9 fixtures per side available for the show to focus – all 15-32 degree Strand SL Zooms. Mezzanine Rails These pipes hang below the Dress Circle level of the Concert Hall. They are approx. 12’ above the stage. They are accessible by combination ladder from the Mezzanine Level. These rails are only along the sides, and act like low box boom positions. They start approx. 22’ from the stage edge, and extend to 8’ US. The house hung fixtures have a permanent focus. Note: All of the circuits at these positions are duplicated with the circuits in use for the Balcony Rail directly above.

Perches These positions are like box booms, but located upstage. There are three Perches on each side of the stage, located behind and above the side choir lofts at approx. 20’, 26’, and 32’ US. Each Perch has three pipes, one above the other, at approx. 26’, 28’6, and 31’ above the stage. Each Perch has 6 fixtures, 2 per pipe – all 15-32 degree Strand SL Zooms. These are typically twofered into near/far focus pairs. One pair has a house focus – a side wash with a gobo breakup – they can be refocused for the show, but will need to be restored afterwards. The Perches are equipped with doors that swing open in an onstage and downstage manner that helps mask the fixtures from the audience. For acoustical reasons, these doors should be closed for acoustic shows, unless these fixtures are necessary. The architecture will obstruct some shots. The side choir lofts (and people standing there) interfere with how far offstage the near shot can hit – especially for the lower fixtures. For the most part, 20’ from centre is the furthest offstage these positions can light on their side. The doors will also limit how far downstage the fixtures can be focused – especially for the DS fixture on each pipe. In addition, legs hung from trusses will interfere with the focus. There is also a double set of doors downstage of the three Perches, at approx. 12’ US, where fixtures can be hung. There is no house hang. The architectural obstructions are even worse here. Canopy Slots For shows using the orchestra wash, or for shows that are not using truss, there are a few top specials available in the canopy slots. The slots are three central openings in the canopy, approx. 20’ US. There are 11 fixtures – all 15-32 degree Strand SL Zooms. All of them are available for the show to focus. Most of the stage can be hit from the slots, unless there is truss in the air – truss #2 and #3 will obstruct most shots from the canopy slots.

House Focused Washes In addition to the washes listed below, the following page describes our full-stage LED side wash. Orchestra Wash There is a permanently hung and focused open-white (no-color) wash on the entire stage and elevators. It is used for lighting orchestral concerts, to provide suitable illumination for reading music. This wash is really three balanced washes: • A front-ish top wash which covers the whole stage. • A back wash covering most of the stage, where music stands typically face upstage. • A side wash covering some of the stage, where music stands typically face offstage. Some separation and isolation is possible, but for the most part the wash can just be made tighter or wider to accommodate the size of the orchestra. Most of the circuiting is in SL/SR pairs, which means that the wash will generally need to be symmetrical. This combined wash consists of 117 fixtures – Strand SL lekos, and 6” Strand Fresnels. They are hung/mounted on the acoustic canopy, truss #5 (the upstage-most truss), and some of the side balcony rails. These fixtures can not be refocused for the show. If any of trusses #1 through #4 are used, they will obstruct some of the orchestra wash. It is possible to use a small screen (or banner, etc) at centre, in line with truss #2, as long as it is at least 17’ above the stage, and the canopy is low enough. Truss #5 must be flown out at its highest trim for the focus to work. Hanging anything else on truss #5 is tricky as great care must be taken to balance the load so that the truss doesn’t twist and wreck the focus. Gobo Wash There is a house focused, open-white, side wash with a gobo breakup. The near shots are cut offstage at approx. 20’, thereby filling a 40’ wide playing area on the stage proper. All 12 of the 15-32 degree Strand SL Zooms making up the wash, are located in the Perches. If they are refocused, they will need to be restored after the show. Please note that legs hung from the trusses will interfere with this focus. Miscellaneous There are permanent open-white washes for each of the following areas: • Choir loft – top wash o provides a choir in the loft with suitable illumination for reading music • Organ pipes – from diagonal front and the sides • Main two aisles in the audience – from the FOH balcony rails • Houselights (audience lighting)

JSCH LED SIDE WASH

JSCH has a permanently focused side wash. The entire stage, including the elevators, is lit from both stage right and stage left. It's lit with 7-colour LED lighting fixtures, providing a wide selection of colours, including white. FOCUS NOTES > From each side, there are 4 areas across the stage: Near-Near, Near, Mid, & Far > An orchestral show would only use the Near-Near, Near & Mid areas, to avoid blinding any of the musicians with the Far areas > The Mid areas have a cut on the far side to avoid blinding any musicians in a typical setup > Most other shows would use the Near, Mid & Far areas > The Near areas have an offstage cut at 21' off centre, creating a 42' wide playing area > The stage itself is 3 areas deep (DS, MS, & US), plus a 4th for the elevators > The US areas are, of course, cut off the US wall, and any softgoods hung from Truss #5 > Likewise, MS areas are cut to avoid softgoods on Truss #4, and the DS areas avoid Truss #3 > Please note that this focus is permanent -- these fixtures will NOT be refocused for the show FIXTURES 32 - ETC Source Four LED Series 2 Lustr ellipsoidal reflector spotlight fixtures Mode > Quick Setup - General >> 10 DMX channels per fixture, 320 DMX channels total JSCH DMX Universe #2

Fixtures & Related Equipment In addition to the Source Four LED fixtures documented on the previous page, we also have an inventory of moving light fixtures and conventional fixtures, as documented on the following two pages. Please note that the DMX addresses and fixture modes listed are permanent, and will not be changed for the show. Please discuss equipment requirements with the lighting department when advancing the show. Followspots 2 @ Strong Xenon Super Trouper – long throw, 2000w >> Note that a rental fee applies • Equipped with Telrad sights, and additional external exhausts • Located in the Centre FOH Cove • Range basically covers the whole stage, but does not extend into the audience • House colours: Frame 1 – R04 Medium Bastard Amber Frame 2 – R33 No Colour Pink Frame 3 – R52 Light Lavender Frame 4 – R62 Booster Blue Frame 5 – R02 Bastard Amber Frame 6 – R132 frost Two additional followspots can be accommodated - Loge G, house right & house left (top seating level, off to either side, immediately in front of the balcony). The architecture obstructs the spot’s range – it can only go approx. 15’ offstage of centre, on the side the followspot is located. If the show isn’t providing these spots, we can make arrangements for a third-party rental. These additional locations must be requested well in advance so that the seats are not sold. A harness is required for the setup and operation of these followspots. Broadcast Booth • Available for the show’s console, and/or our Insight or ION consoles • HL of the Lighting Booth, behind mezzanine (at the rear of the main audience level) • Equipped with program sound • Patio doors face the stage, and one side can be left open during the show FOH Mix Position • Available for the show’s console, and/or our Insight or ION consoles • Typically HL of the audio console, last row of the Orchestra level (main audience level) o these seats are removable, and we can provide a level 4’ or 6’ table • Please request this position in advance and we will ensure that these seats are not sold All positions have common u-ground (15A 120V NEMA 5-15R) power, and Clear-Com intercom Please note that our Emergency Response Policy requires that our Head of Lighting be in the Lighting Booth during performances. This means that our Head of Lighting can only operate our EOS console. In situations where the show has an LD, but would like our Head of Lighting to operate lights for the opener: we would have to do so from the EOS, and we will need programming time with control of the show hang.

Data House DMX Universes We are using 4 DMX universes • #1 – dimmers, relays, houselights • #2 – LED side wash • #3 – Robe Robin DLX Spot moving light fixtures • #4 – all other house moving light fixtures Network Our data runs on an Ethernet network • Cat 5e wiring to appropriate locations in the hall • E1.31 Streaming ACN (sACN) Ethernet protocol o Capable of transmitting 64,000 DMX universes • Pathway Connectivity Pathport VIA 10-port Ethernet switch • Pathway Connectivity Pathport DMX nodes o 3 @ Pathport Octo 8-port DMX nodes o 1 @ Pathport Quattro 4-port DMX node o Each port can be quickly configured to any universe o As well as outputting DMX, they can merge multiple inputs o Custom universes can be created • Hard-wired DMX lines run from the nodes to most of the permanent lighting positions, and to the four corners of the stage • Trusses get their data from two-universe DMX looms connected to the Pathport Octo in the SR choir loft

Dry Lines We have data lines that are not connected to our network or equipment for the show’s use. We can get show data from USR to the FOH Mix Position, or to the booths. This typically means that the show does not need to run a snake. • 4 @ DMX lines o If the show needs any of our DMX universes, it will be via these lines • 1 @ Cat 6 line o Note that to get this to a booth, we will need to use an Ethernet switch due the length of the run, but nothing else will be on the switch Snakes The path for running a show’s snake, if needed: • Approx. 190’ from typical FOH Mix position to typical USR location of dimmers/distros • SR/HL side of main seating level (audio runs SL/HR) • For the most part, the snake simply runs behind seats • There are 3 troughs to run through where the snake crosses aisles

Dimming Electro Controls QD Dimmers with Johnson Systems QD-2000 control electronics • Including houselights, there are 230 dimmers o Many circuits are duplicated in multiple locations • 164 dimmers @ 2.4kw o Most circuits connect to 20A 120V NEMA L5-20R Twist-Lock receptacles (common Twist-Lock) o 12 circuits are connected to 2 @ 19-pin Soca connectors (common Soca, standard wiring with 6 circuits each) • 66 dimmers @ 6kw o 26 circuits connect to 45A 120V Joy receptacles o Most circuits have 2.4kw branch circuits that may go to multiple locations § Most branch circuits connect to 20A 120V NEMA L5-20R Twist-Lock receptacles (common Twist-Lock), except for hard-wired houselight circuits Circuiting the Show Hang Trusses are supplied with dimming circuits via 10 Soca cables that come from the SR Perches (for a total of 60 circuits). Another 3 Soca cables can be lowered from the canopy for truss #1 (bringing the total to 78 circuits). With more time and manpower, a maximum of 106 circuits can be made available for the show’s truss and floor hang, depending on what house hang fixtures are being used elsewhere. Our socas all breakout to 20A 120V NEMA L5-20R Twist-Lock receptacles (common Twist-Lock).

Lighting Power Connections Off Stage Right (Upstage) 500A 3∅ 120/208V service feeds: 400A 3∅ disconnect with standard Cam-Lok J-Series E1016 connectors * 200A 3∅ disconnect with standard Cam-Lok J-Series E1016 connectors * * neutral and ground connectors are reversed (male connectors) 100A 3∅ breaker panel that feeds (in addition to misc. convenience outlets, lights, etc.): 50A 120/208V NEMA 14-50R straight blade receptacle (stove receptacle) A ProPower 120V Distro is typically located here. It provides 24 circuits @ 20A 120V. It is required whenever the JSCH moving lights are in use. It can use either disconnect, and has a Cam-Lok flow-through connection rated for 400A. Circuiting the Show Hang JSCH moving light fixtures receive their power from the ProPower 120V Distro mentioned above. Socas from the trusses drop down to the SR choir loft, and then run down to the USR door, where they then connect to the distro. Our socas all breakout to 20A 120V NEMA L5-20R Twist-Lock receptacles (common Twist-Lock). Socas for the show’s equipment can be run in a similar manner. For further information about what power connections are available, please see the ‘Power Information’ pdf on our website. This document also lists our portable distribution boxes and racks, and what power connections they in turn provide. https://www.artscommons.ca/HostYourEvent/Resources/TechnicalInfo
