INTRODUCTION TO PERU

ITINERARY : PERU minutes drive from Cusco airport). The site is located above the valley with stunning terracing following the contours of the hill. After the visit to the ruins you may want to take a look at the village and famous market. Do discuss options with your guide. Lunch has been organized at Hacienda Huayo Ccari, a lovely traditional hacienda owned and lived-in by one of the oldest land-owning families in Cusco. You will enjoy a delicious served three-course meal in an elegant wood paneled dining room with views of the valley below. We recommend that you spend some time looking at the superb pieces of the Hacienda’s folk art collection. Your guide or the owners will show you around. There is also a wonderful garden with stunning views. On arrival to your hotel, relax, lie down, drink plenty of liquid and allow your body to acclimatize to the high altitude.

URUBAMBA VALLEY The Urubamba Valley, traditionally called the Yucay Valley and most recently Sacred Valley, owes its name to the beauty and fertility of its land. Over the past ten years tourists have discovered this rich land dotted with picturesque Andean markets, impressive churches and remarkable Inca ruins. It stretches for approximately (180 kilometres/112 miles) north of Cusco (toward Machu Picchu), and lies at an average of (2200metres/7,200ft), approximately (1000 metres/3,280ft) lower than the Cusco. The climate is considerably milder here making it the chosen area by the Incas and later Spanish Conquistadors as a resting place where they established their estates and country homes.

E L P

Today, the Urubamba Valley is not overlooked by tourism, and consequently some of the key highlights such as Pisac market and the Ollantaytambo ruins are somewhat overrun. At Aracari we continue to visit these sites, but in a creative fashion in order to minimize the disruption to your experience. We also visit lesser-known communities, such as Patakancha where we have a medical project, private Haciendas and arrange one-day walks to remote Inca sites. For the active, there are also opportunities to horse ride, raft or even paraglide.

M A S

Overnight: Willka Tika Guest House

DAY 2 - Willka Tika Valley

Full day in Patakancha The idea behind this community visit is for you to get a little closer to traditional Andean life.

The number of visitors to Patakancha has increased substantially in the last few years. However, local people still live off their llama and alpacas and supplement their income working as porters during the tourist season, and their living standards are very basic. The porters we use for our treks come from Patakancha, which is why several years ago we decided to create a community project at Patakancha which aims to provide the locals with much needed first aid medical assistance from our donations and those of our visitors. We believe in sustainable tourism and giving back to the people who support us with their work. Please inquire with your guide to visit the Project or make donations.

DAY 3 - Urubamba Valley to Machu Picchu

Early this morning, your guide will come and collect you from your hotel to drive by private vehicle Ollantaytambo. The journey will take approximately 25 minutes. On arrival, first you will visit the fabulous ruins of Ollantaytambo, and its town. The latter is unique in that it still preserves its original Inca architectural layout. Ask your guide to check whether the Ethnographic Museum is open: its educational display of the history and customs of the Quechua people makes it well worth the visit. After this visit, your guide will go with you to the train station in Ollantaytambo to aboard the train to Aguas Calientes. Machu Picchu: The Lost City of the Incas Enjoy the panoramic views from the skylights of the Vistadome train on your way to Machu Picchu today. Boarding this standard train service from Ollantaytambo, the journey takes one hour and 30 minutes approximately to reach Aguas Calientes where you will catch a bus for the final 30 minute ride uphill to the Sanctuary. Aboard the train you will enjoy a hot drink and breakfast before disembarking. Machu Picchu is Peru’s main tourist destination and it is magnificent - never a disappointment. It is definitely one of the world’s great sights and will be the climax of your visit to Peru. 70km/43 miles northwest of Cusco, Machu Picchu is often referred to as the ‘lost city of the Incas’. The outside world forgot about it for centuries, (although the Peruvians didn’t) and it It was brought to international prominence in 1911 by Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham.

E L P

Its fascination is due in part to its position, high on a mountain ridge, some 2,430m/7,970ft above the sea level. There is also the beauty of the ruins themselves. Most experts agree that the Sanctuary was a ‘llacta’, a settlement built to control the economies of the neighbouring regions and this was the most beautiful llacta built by the Incas. Experts believe that it was also used as a secure ‘bunker’ for Incan royalty in case of attack and that it was part of Pachacutec’s, a major Inka’s royal estate.

M A S

Enjoy a 2-3 hour guided visit of Machu Picchu.

After a lunch a la carte at Sanctuary Lodge take one of the shuttle buses back down to Aguas Calientes, they depart every half hour.

Overnight at Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge***

A member of the Orient Express Hotel Group, this 30-room hotel occupies one of the most sought after locations in the world as the only property adjacent to the Machu Picchu site itself. As you would expect, you will receive impeccable service and excellent food at this hotel. However, as no rooms have views of the ruins, we recommend the twin rooms with a garden view. King-sized beds are only available in the noisier rooms.

Lunch will be on your own. We recommend an activity-filled day. There are several excursions depending on your fitness level and how long you want to be outside. It starts from the site itself and takes you on a narrow Inca road amidst lush vegetation to a stone Inca Bridge. Rating: Easy. Hike to Inti Punku or Sun Gate, the original Gateway into Machu Picchu when approaching the site along the Inca Trail. Inti Punku is the first point in the Inca Trail where the ruins of Machu Picchu are visible. The views of the site and surrounding landscape are superb. Rating: Moderate. Approximate total time for this excursion is 2 ½ hours:1 ¼ hours there, and 1 ¼ hours return. Hike up to Wayna Picchu, the mountain behind Machu Picchu. This hike is strenuous and is only recommended for people who are not scared of heights and who have a good fitness level as a fair amount of climbing is required. There are fabulous views of Machu Picchu from the top. Total you may want to extend your visit and go to the Moon Temple as well, which is close to Wayna Picchu. This will add an extra hour total to this excursion. Rating: Rigorous. Approximate total time for this excursion 2½ hours, or 3½ hours including visiting the Moon Temple.

E L P

Hike up to Machu Picchu Mountain. The hike starts at the site itself. It is strenuous and steep and takes you up to 3050metres/10,007ft. Rating: Rigorous. Approximate total time for this excursion 3-4 hours.
