Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2016

It’s the “Year of Mercy”. …What do we do now? The Mercy Challenge! We are all aware that Pope Francis has called for the Year of Mercy, and it has already begun. This Lenten season will have a heightened significance for all of us in the Church. Our parish mission, and soon to be announced upcoming concert, will help us enter into the mystery of the Father’s love for each one of us. I thought it was a good time to remind all of us about the traditional works of mercy in our Church teaching. They are: Corporal Works of Mercy: -Feed the hungry -Give drink to the thirsty -Clothe the naked -Shelter the homeless -Visit the sick -Visit the imprisoned -Bury the dead Spiritual Works of Mercy: -Counsel the doubtful -Instruct the ignorant -Admonish sinners -Comfort the afflicted -Forgive offenses -Bear wrongs patiently -Pray for the living and the dead I will also challenge you to attempt to make a plan to do each of these in a new way. Perhaps not only materially, but also emotionally and spiritually accomplishing them for Jesus. Let’s take the Mercy Challenge!

Adding-up – Pennies for the Poor

Near the parking lot entrances of St. Thomas More Church and at St. Veronica Chapel, there is a small box where people place change, mostly pennies. Donations go to the Diocesan Dire Emergency Fund in South County that helps with rental assistance, utilities, prescriptions. Thanks to all who make “change”, “change” the world.

St. Columba: “Loving Savior, inspire in us the depth of love that is fitting for you to receive as God.”

Shoe Collection for the Village of Congrego, Dominican Republic Our St. Thomas More Missionaries are collecting new or slightly used shoes for the Catholic community surrounding the orphanage, which they will bring with them on their mission trip. Those who live in in this village are in need of shoes. Please bring donations to the entrances of St. Thomas More or St. Veronica Chapel. The deadline to bring shoes is Sunday, February 7th. Men’s Bible Study Our parish has a very active group of men, who for more than 14 years, have met each Saturday at 7:30AM in a "round table" format to discuss the Sunday scripture readings. It is very informal and attended by some scholarly and not-so-scholarly folks. It’s rewarding and even some fun. Bring your coffee and come on over to St. Thomas More parish hall!

Pray the Rosary So many people wish to practice their faith, but are not able to do so. Our Lady’s Guild invites all who can join them. The rosary is prayed each weekday after the 9:00AM Mass at St. Thomas More & Saturday mornings, for world peace, at 8:30AM before Mass.

Second Collection Church in Latin America

The second collection next weekend is for the annual Collection for the Church in Latin America. Donations from this collection are distributed to dioceses, parishes, seminaries and other Catholic institutions to assist in the formation of priests, religious, lay ministers, missionaries, catechesis and youth ministers. These young people, at high risk for violence, often lack an education in values and critical thinking skills. In doing so, fellow Catholics in Latin America and the Caribbean – who are rich in faith but lacking in material resources – are not only able to participate more fully in the life of the Church, but also are able to share it with others as well. Your support is appreciated.

Do you feel God is calling you to be a Permanent Deacon?

Christ calls each of us to serve His church in different ways. Regardless of the path the faithful have chosen, there are many opportunities to spread the Gospel messages. In 2013, twenty-one men were ordained and are now serving as deacons in our diocese. They are among 70 men actively engaged in diaconal ministry in the Diocese of Providence. God may be calling you to find out more about permanent deacons! For information about the newly announced permanent deacon formation program, log on to http:// dioceseofprovidence.org/deacon-formationprogram.

Living as the Body of Christ Some of Saint Paul's best known and most beloved imagery is contained in the passages from First Corinthians that we have heard last week and this week: the many gifts granted by the one same Spirit and the many members making up the one Body of Christ. Few passages from sacred scripture more accurately sum up how Christian vocations work together. Unlike some of Paul's other writings, which are a product of the social and religious conventions of his time, these enable us to look at our own lives and the lives of those around us to discern what gifts, what vocations the Holy Spirit has given for the good of all. We can likewise know the joys and sorrows of the other members of the Body and share in them for the strengthening of the whole Body of Christ.
