‘It is not enough for young people to be loved they must know that they are loved’ Saint John Bosco

Mission Statement After the example of Don Bosco, we aim to enable each person to become a good Christian, an honest citizen, able to earn a living. Good Christians: knowing their

religion, with good experience appropriate to their age of prayer and liturgy, of reflection on their own life and vocation, of service to others; appreciative of the beauty of the world; respecting others and able to work with them; maturing as members of the Church; able to face the future with confidence and take up the challenge of the Gospel and its universal values of Love, Forgiveness, Reconciliation, Justice, Faith, Integrity, Humility, Service, Peace, Hope and Prayer. Honest citizens: good members of

the smaller communities to which they belong, the form, the year, the College; understanding their place in them, their duties and their rights; extending this understanding into the larger community and society; and given the opportunity to understand how society works and how they can play their part in it with a keen sense of justice. Able to earn their living: learning good habits of work, of diligence and of self-respect; raising their aspirations and sights as high as possible; obtaining the best possible educational qualifications which will open doors to further education and to work.

Welcome Dear prospective parents and students. It is with great pleasure and much enthusiasm that I welcome you to St John Bosco College, a school judged as ‘Good’ by Ofsted in March 2013, just 18 months into our existence. As the only Catholic secondary school in Wandsworth, this is a real opportunity for the Catholic community to benefit from a new place of learning and I can assure you that staff and Governors alike are committed to making our college an outstanding, and happy school. Plans are well underway to move into brand new state-of-the art premises in Surrey Lane, Battersea at the end of 2015. Our school is distinctive: a Catholic community in the Salesian tradition where excellent academic progress will be matched by exceptional care. An 11-18 school, your child can benefit from our strong Catholic ethos right up to going to university or college and high expectations will be the order of the day. High expectations of me, of my staff and of our students. Parents and carers are absolutely key partners in ensuring our success and I will ensure you receive high quality information to help you support your child’s learning. Selecting a school is a serious matter and I hope this prospectus gives some indication as to why I am so proud to lead St John Bosco College. God bless.

World-wide Family The Salesian World-wide Family is a caring group of people from all walks of life and all corners of the earth who are dedicated to making life better for poor and needy children and families. It is led by more than 30,000 priests, brothers and sisters who serve as Salesians of Don Bosco (S.D.B.), the second largest order in the Roman Catholic Church. There are nearly 4,000 Salesian educational institutions worldwide (including Primary, Secondary and Further Education Colleges), catering for over one million students. In the UK there are five Salesian Secondary Schools. Under the patronage of St John Bosco, the friend of youth, all our boys and girls are welcomed into the world-wide Salesian family, where each person strives to bring about the good of all.

Outstanding Pastoral Care The key person in the pastoral care system is the Form Tutor who meets the students under his or her care every day and gets to know them really well, providing support and guidance for them. The Form Tutor in Saint John Bosco College is the first line of referral for any concern and for general progress. Form Tutors are all supported by a Head of Year, who in turn has the support and assistance of a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Tutor groups are small in size to ensure that the Form Tutors know all their tutees well. The tutor groups are based on a House System. Saint John Bosco College has four houses. Each student and all members of staff, both teaching and support staff, are members of a house. The houses help to create a strong sense of belonging and team identity for each student. During their time at Saint John Bosco College, pupils will work to represent their house in all areas of school life from sport, drama and music to attendance and academic performance. The four Houses at St John Bosco College are: Benedict - named after the Holy

Father, Pope Benedict XVI Mazzarello - after St Mary Mazzarello, founder of the Salesian Sisters Paul - after Pope Paul VI Rua - after Blessed Michael Rua, Don Bosco’s first successor
