Care close to home, with a worldview From our President and CEO When those of us at Geisinger Health System — doctors, nurses, administrators, support staff and so many more — look out of our windows, we do not see just what is right in front of us. We see the world and how we can change it for the better through our compassion and innovation.

Geisinger president and CEO David T. Feinberg, MD, takes time to visit with a patient.

Our founder Abigail Geisinger had a simple decree: “Make my hospital right; make it the best.” We are taking these words to heart more than ever before as we move into our second century and beyond. The “beyond,” to us, is a place where there are no boundaries to care.

Geisinger Health System President and CEO David T. Feinberg, MD, MBA

By using innovative methods, technologies, and approaches that step outside the traditional, we are able to see the person in front of us, and not simply a list of their symptoms. Seeing the whole picture and experiencing the patient’s world is what will take us into our next century. We are looking at ways to treat people close to home, if not in their homes, so they may have a patient experience free of additional fear and stress. Our generous donors and partners are essential in creating programs that enable us to erase these barriers to treatment. It is one way we are looking at the larger, changing picture of how we provide care and ensure better patient outcomes.

Seeing the whole picture and experiencing the patient’s world is what will take us into our next century.

Providing the best patient care possible, as close to home as possible, to those in need is important to us. But we also know the world is more connected than it was 100 years ago. We are thinking regionally, nationally and globally with our research and in our efforts to aid population health. We are erasing the boundaries to education, health and wellness. We are looking to today and to the future, and at how Geisinger Health System will impact the world of tomorrow. Through you and your generous support, we are able to take Abigail Geisinger’s directive — “make it the best” — to the rest of the world. And because of you, we know it all begins with caring.

Making a world of difference

100

From our campaign co-chairs

Throughout our centennial campaign, Redefining Boundaries, your generous gifts have

given us at Geisinger Health System the tools to make powerful impressions on the people who come to us seeking care. We heard stories of how we have altered their lives, their families or their worlds in ways they did not think was possible. Geisinger is continuously building a bridge to a world of hope and healing on a personal and grand scale. We strive to aid population health, grow our cuttingedge approaches to education, treatment and care, and help those who are the most vulnerable among us. We aim to better a person’s health, but also to change the larger world through better health. We hear how Geisinger made someone stronger, their life healthier and the world around them one where they can thrive. Without your generosity, none of these stories of caring would ever have been told.

Geisinger is continuously building a bridge to a world of hope and healing on a personal and a grand scale. The first words of every personal triumph came because of your philanthropic giving. We thank you for joining us on our journey of discovery, research, growth, challenge and, most importantly, change. It has taken us further than any of us could have imagined and we are thrilled to write the next chapter.

Building bridges ProvenWellness® Neighborhood’s network of caregivers and community and social service agencies closes the care gap in northeast Pennsylvania. Jenny* felt helpless when her daughter, Leia*, was diagnosed with cancer. The tumor would take her girl’s eyesight or, worse, her life. Surgery was the only option. The road from Leia’s diagnosis to recovery was full of pitfalls. ProvenWellness® Neighborhood (PWN) navigated each obstacle through its network of more than 140 healthcare providers and community and social service agencies dotting northeast Pennsylvania that strive to meet needs that have slipped through the cracks and hindered proper care. These range from getting a walker for a patient or, in Jenny and Leia’s case, getting insurance.

Geisinger Health System and PWN’s consideration of every facet of a patient’s life is defining a new wave of “health” and “care.”

Medicaid’s approval arrived in 24 hours after a PWN Wayne County Community Health Assistant (CHA) advocated for Jenny’s application. Leia’s surgery was days later. The CHA connected the two to the American Cancer Society, which houses families while loved ones seek treatment, and an online support group for the time during and after the surgery. A week and one successful operation later, the future looked bright for mother and daughter. Without PWN and her CHA, the outcome could have been tragic for Leia.

6 2015 Gifts and Grants Report: Building Bridges

Seeing an opening Care gaps, like the one that almost shattered Jenny and Leia’s lives, are on the rise. PWN, which covers Lackawanna, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties, examines every angle of the big picture, makes connections and fills the voids left when the social and medical essentials are lacking. Geisinger Health System and PWN’s consideration of every facet of a patient’s life is defining a new wave of “health” and “care.” Geisinger’s rethinking of what “health” and “care” means to a person is a radical step beyond traditional healthcare. It is a futuristic vision shared by The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Inc. and other donors. Each noticed a chasm between what an individual and their family needs to handle a problem and how or what they can do to solve that problem. This care gap, if left to fester, will have a devastating effect on population health.

Stephanie Gerkovich (right), community health assistant with ProvenWellness Neighborhood, laughs with her client, Ruth.

Geisinger and PWN are throwing a lifeline of optimism to thousands of people who believed there was nowhere to turn.

PWN connects people to agencies, social workers, therapists and others that are close to home to get the services and items many take for granted, from a ride to a doctor’s appointment to a hot meal. In the two years the program has been in existence, PWN has closed more than 17,000 care gaps and helped more than 12,500 people.

Rising to the challenge Geisinger and PWN are throwing a lifeline of optimism to thousands of people who believed there was nowhere to turn. The challenges a CHA uncovers are far-reaching, from homelessness to unaffordable

medication to behavioral health issues. The Weinberg Foundation’s grant, along with charitable gifts, has launched a website, with online health tutorials, and increased staffing to reach as many people as possible. PWN’s network of support shows the world that when a care gap closes, a new life opens up and people like Jenny and Leia — uninsured, living in a rural county and struggling with a terrifying situation — no longer need to live in fear that they will not receive the help they need. *Names changed.

2015 Gifts and Grants Report: Building Bridges 7

Many patients must make decisions at the crossroads of care — the intersection of time, distance, what is needed and what is possible in a person’s life. Each pulls a different way and one wrong turn can have devastating results. Geisinger Health System is, once again, making the impossible possible for its patients through its groundbreaking use of telehealth. Geisinger’s mix of live audio/videoconferencing and store-and-forward sharing, which sends digital data like X-rays to physicians, is redefining how specialists connect with patients, especially in rural and remote locations.

Health checks and balances Telehealth is a wellspring of comfort to people living in remote or rural areas who have difficulty getting to specialists in larger hospitals, such as the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville or Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in WilkesBarre. When a specialist visits a county with thousands of residents, that doctor’s appointments can fill up quickly while the waitlist builds and health issues go unchecked. It is a lopsided scenario of too many patients in need and too few specialists to care for them. Verizon and Geisinger were determined to find a more balanced approach to reach patients that do not have easy access to specialized care. But here, now, it all begins with caring. When Geisinger sees a void in its patients’ lives, its caregivers do everything in their power to fill it. A grant from Verizon Foundation is helping Geisinger’s Women’s Health department establish videoconsults with Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialists at the Geisinger Lewistown and Geisinger Tunkhannock clinics and has expanded the Autism & Developmental Medicine Institute (ADMI) at Geisinger’s network to two sites, Geisinger Precision Health Center in Forty Fort, Pennsylvania, and Geisinger Gray’s Woods in State College.

Forgoing the distance Telehealth is electronically bridging the miles between patients and providers.

Bridging the miles Telehealth is changing the way doctors traditionally meet with patients. At ADMI’s locations and the Geisinger Lewistown and Geisinger Tunkhannock clinics, webcams are bridging the miles between patient and doctor to ensure timely diagnoses and treatments.

Lisa* was one such patient who desperately needed to see an MFM. Her high blood pressure would be a complication during her pregnancy that could mean a premature delivery or problems with the placenta. Each appointment was hours from home and would mean a day away from her husband, her kids and her job. The thought of juggling work, her commitments and driving hours to see a specialist had Lisa stressing out before she made her first appointment. She must monitor her high-risk pregnancy, but it needed to be close to her home and job. At the crossroads of care, telehealth makes it possible to consult with an MFM specialist at either Geisinger clinic and closes a care gap that existed for patients like Lisa. Specialized and timely care is also vital for children with autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions. Parents far removed from ADMI at its hub, the Geisinger Bucknell Center in Lewisburg, can connect with their child’s team by videoconferencing at either the Geisinger Precision Health Center or Geisinger Gray’s Woods. Telehealth gives parents peace of mind that they are able to talk with their child’s doctor. Telehealth is easing the burdens of parents, from moms-to-be like Lisa to the moms and dads of children with autism that are navigating the uncharted waters of their and their children’s health. For them, Geisinger and its life-changing use of telehealth is a beacon of hope. *Name changed.

From the hospital room to the living room The Mobile Health Paramedic and Treatment at Home Option programs move the care of the hospital to the comfort of home. A chronic illness forever alters a person’s life. If it is not adjusting

Deborah of Monroe County credits the team with getting her back to feeling 100 percent after her heart scare.

to the symptoms — that unrelenting cough or painful fluid build-up — it is the terror that the next trip to the emergency department is just around the corner. Even after being discharged, the idea that another run to the hospital is a matter of time can be nerve-wracking.

The team at Geisinger is onto something big: the satisfaction scores from those using this option were 100 percent. Deborah* of Monroe County credits the team with getting her back to feeling 100 percent after her heart scare.

The Mobile Health Paramedic program, soon to be expanded as the Treatment at Home Option (TAHO), gives hospital-quality care to a person struggling with certain chronic illnesses, like congestive heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, while they stay in the comfort of their own home. Paramedics usually speed patients to the ER, but this program uses their talents to treat people who fall short of needing a nursing home but want to bypass a live-in aide or one more hospital stay. This assures people at a crossroads that Geisinger cares and is with them whether they are at home or in the hospital.

Deborah’s swollen legs and feet, coupled with her shortness of breath, was a sure sign of an immediate trip to her Geisinger cardiologist. Her stress started to mount since her history of heart failure would mean another stay in the hospital.

One vision: better patient care Expertise and creativity set the Mobile Health Paramedic program apart with its groundbreaking model of care that is transforming patient quality of life. The Gary and Mary West Health Institute collaborated with Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre with its shared vision of enriching the patient experience for seniors and improving population health. Having patients treated at home also frees up hospital beds for those who are in truly dire situations.

10 2015 Gifts and Grants Report: From the Hospital Room to the Living Room

From March 2014 to June 2015, caregivers visited 704 patients and averted 42 hospitalizations, 33 emergency room visits and 168 inpatient stays. For every 100 patients who choose treatment at home over a four-day hospital stay, one hospital bed could potentially be freed up for an entire year at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.

Her doctors had another idea: go home and relax because treatment was on its way. A paramedic gave Deborah diuretics, then coordinated her care with a local nursing and home health agency. A few days later, she was on the mend. Being treated in the comfort of her own home, Deborah says, is a “godsend.” Geisinger released Deborah and hundreds of others like her from a hospital revolving door by reinventing the “hows” and “wheres” of care and comfort.

Geisinger Paramedic staff

From ‘healthcare’ to ‘health’ With already-existing call schedules, experience traveling to homes, knowing what questions to ask and how to size up an escalating problem, paramedics were a natural fit for aiding patients at home. Paramedics take vital signs during visits, administer intravenous medications and make sure instructions are understood and followed. Armed with an e-tablet, paramedics chat in real time with doctors, nurses, therapists, pharmacists and anyone else involved in the patient’s care so Geisinger can ensure that the patient’s needs are addressed and met satisfactorily.

Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center is changing the game when it comes to better patient outcomes and better population health. Just ask Deborah, whose condition remained stable a year after treatment came to her door. Geisinger’s approach of “health,” which is all that makes up a person’s life, over “healthcare” will impact generations to come. And to think it all began with a focus on caring. *Name changed.

Easy pill to swallow The Medication Therapy Disease Management Chronic Pain program finds new ways to deal with pain and opioid overuse. Shirley*, a 77-year-old woman, came to her doctors at Geisinger Health System with a cane in her hand and the crushing feeling of a baseball bat slamming into her back and leg. OxyContin and Vicodin made her nauseous, but she needed them to get past the crippling agony. With each pill she took, her dream of going to Ireland drifted further away. A rare blood disorder left Jerry* with unrelenting pain and no other way to cope but with a daily 5,000-milligram dose of opioids. Still, there was little relief and even less hope. Members of the Medication Therapy Disease Management (MTDM) Chronic Pain team began from the standpoint of caring, and refused to believe this was the end of Shirley and Jerry's stories. They knew it was the beginning of a future of unlimited possibility. Shirley devised a new course of action with her doctors and a specially trained pharmacist from the program. A topical anesthetic for the pain replaced the opioids. Weeks later, her cane was gathering dust and she started to plan her trip abroad. 12 2015 Gifts and Grants Report: Easy Pill to Swallow

Though the blood disorder will always be a part of Jerry’s life, the pharmacist found alternative therapies and medications for the pain. Months later, Jerry’s opioid usage was non-existent.

Shirley and Jerry proved little things can change a lot. Under the guidance of MTDM, their new ways pushed out old routines so they could build safer, healthier, happier lives for themselves.

Unhealthy waiting game

*Names changed.

Shirley and Jerry are just two of the thousands of patients who have been referred to one of the 12 MTDM clinics. They are among the 74 percent who have improved their overall health; the 86 percent who have increased their everyday functioning; the 22 percent who have reduced their opioid usage; and the 25 percent who reduced their medication costs and their risk for prescription abuse or overdose. Shirley, Jerry and thousands of others are living proof that Geisinger is not only changing lives, but revolutionizing pain management. Every day, people leave any one of the clinics with other ways to treat their pain and reduce, eliminate or find alternatives to opioid usage. Many others wait in a holding pattern of three months or more that leaves them vulnerable. There is the threat to their health, but jobs may also be lost, loved ones ignored and emergency room visits that could have been avoided. By reducing pain and helping people reengage with the world, MTDM is making tremendous changes to population health. It is just one more way Geisinger is creating a more robust world, one person at a time.

Alleviate pain, avoid addiction The MTDM program has been able to help more people closer to home through generous donor support. Contributions from The Mayday Fund and the John E. Morgan Foundation helped to add more pharmacists to the team, who were then able to consult with more patients, as well as provide additional resources for social workers and addiction medicine specialists. In Schuylkill County, one donor is ready to support a prescription drug addiction counseling program in a primary care setting — something that Geisinger leadership hopes will become a staple of the program. Expanding into six more local areas and reducing wait times at clinics are top priorities that can only be done with your philanthropic support. Geisinger will help and heal more people so they can rebuild their lives. Each day, Geisinger pharmacists work with primary care teams to find patients alternative therapies and new ways to manage behavioral health while following up with regular appointments and calls. More importantly, by creating goals with their patients and helping them see a healthy future, they and the MTDM team are creatively rehabilitating and restoring people to their full lives.

Shirley, Jerry and thousands of others are living proof that Geisinger is not only changing lives, but revolutionizing pain management.

Making a connection KeyHIE links care providers to the electronic health records of patients in rural areas. Gary* has had diabetes as far back as he can remember, stretching all the way to his childhood in Pike County. He never left his hometown, but things are not the same. Decades of diabetes have battered his body. Gary’s numerous specialists, from a podiatrist to an endocrinologist, are spread over different counties. It is costly and exhausting to keep up with his appointments. He has a list of people that, whether it was for an afternoon or several years, have treated the complications that stem from his chronic condition. Each one hears his story from its start and it takes forever to get to today’s problem. He knows his history is important, but it is getting more difficult to remember every detail of his medical past.

It is a fallible process that Geisinger Health System is countering — while building a lasting bridge to stronger patient care — through the use of the most cutting-edge methods and technologies.

Patients like Gary, who live in rural areas and are far from or are seeing multiple care providers, run the risk of forgotten facts and overlaps in care every time they call EMS or visit a new care provider. It is a fallible process that Geisinger Health System is countering — while building a lasting bridge to stronger patient care — through the use of the most cutting-edge methods and technologies.

Geisinger is boldly raising the bar on how care is delivered to people throughout central and northeast Pennsylvania by spearheading access to electronic health records (EHRs) and expanding the Keystone Health Information Exchange (KeyHIE).

Link to life Geisinger and KeyHIE, a secure portal where caregivers can access information from the EHRs of more than 4 million consenting patients, are providing an entryway to greater care coordination, quicker diagnoses and better patient outcomes. KeyHIE’s record-sharing between nursing homes, doctors, EMS, pharmacists, nurses and the like can be a powerful antidote to the disconnect patients in rural areas may feel. Geisinger and The Margaret A. Cargill Foundation have expanded KeyHIE in the seven-county area in northeast Pennsylvania that includes Bradford, Lackawanna, Pike, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties.

Colleen Jenceleski, RN (right), Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, confers with a patient.

Starting with blanket coverage in Sullivan County and the grant from the Cargill Foundation, 50 additional healthcare providers, including 20 EMS personnel, will be able to connect to the exchange to better care for the people living in these communities. By growing KeyHIE, Geisinger is constructing a lifeline that will close the care gap for patients too far away, too weak or financially unable to reach the care they need.

Global change through exchanges Broadening the scope of KeyHIE will provide wider access to records so patients no longer need to know the date of their last X-ray, and healthcare providers do not have to scramble to fill in the gaps in their chart. It is a move that will save time, resources and energy for both patient and provider.

Geisinger is a bellwether of healthcare on a regional, national and global level. Sharing Geisinger’s EHRs with the nationwide Sequoia Project is a step that will give care providers more partners to work with as they close the care gap in rural pockets not just in Pennsylvania, but throughout the country. As health information exchanges evolve and multiply, Geisinger envisions a world where healthcare is less fragmented and more globally unified – and it is proud to be leading the way during this historic shift in care. Patients like Gary, and others in similar straits, will receive personalized care no matter where they are or whom they see. Geisinger is a beacon of hope to patients everywhere, ensuring they get the care they need from the providers they need when they need it.

Sharing Geisinger’s EHRs with the nationwide Sequoia Project is a step that will give care providers more partners to work with as they close the care gap in rural pockets not just in Pennsylvania, but throughout the country.

“We have the opportunity to truly change the way risk is identified through this kind of approach,” Michael Murray, MD, director of clinical genomics, said. “Overall, we expect to identify a genetic risk in one out of every 50 participants.” Geisinger Health System and its GenomeFIRST program are the forerunners of this revolutionary concept of using genome sequencing to identify risk, then prevent and treat disease that will not only alter the landscape of world health, but also is poised to reverberate through generations. Carroll Flansburg (right) provides a patient with information about Geisinger’s MyCode® Community Health Initiative.

An ounce of prevention ... The MyCode® Community Health Initiative and GenomeFIRST are changing the relationship between genes, diagnoses and treatments. As her 50th birthday neared, Anna’s* worry mounted. Her mother never made it to 60 after spending the last decade of her life fighting breast cancer. Just like her grandmother before her. It was a fate Anna feared. She refused to fade into a hazy memory, like the grandmother her children barely remember. She strategically is fighting in a way her mother never could — with a prick of her vein and a few vials of blood. Anna had a normal examination and mammography results, and did not show signs of cancer, but her sample showed evidence of the BRCA1 gene, which indicates an increased risk for breast cancer. Shocked, but steadfast, she met with clinical experts at Geisinger and is now considering all options to reduce her risk, including daily medications or a preventative mastectomy.

Ushering in a new age Geisinger and GenomeFIRST’s momentous research endeavor was financed in part by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Discovered in Pennsylvania–Developed in Pennsylvania (D2PA) grant program, the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, as well an award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and gifts from the Mericle Foundation, Frontier Communications and the Auxiliary at Geisinger Wyoming Valley. This funding launched GenomeFIRST, which returns the results of genetic testing back to patients like Anna so they and their families can make informed decisions about the future of their care. It was not long before other organizations saw the benefit of its far-reaching possibilities. Donor funds helped pay for testing for patients and family members who could not afford it, while other funds helped spread the word about GenomeFIRST and its potential impact, not just on the very personal level of every patient, but the regional and global influence the program could have in terms of population health. The program starts with one person, but the ripple effect is clear: what that one person learns can fan out through entire bloodlines and, in turn, larger

populations. Anna’s daughters will have a future of their choosing because Geisinger has dramatically shifted the concept of “sick care” to a trailblazing one of “health care,” where disease detection, prevention and treatment can begin before one symptom appears. “Health care” starts by volunteering, as nearly 100,000 others have, a medical history, preferably as an electronic health record, and a few vials of blood for the MyCode® Community Health Initiative and its vast research biobank. At the Geisinger Precision Health Center in Forty Fort, Pennsylvania, researchers are studying and comparing the DNA sequence of each sample against medical histories to better understand the complex relationship between genes and diseases. It is a journey that will uncover new treatments and

medications and enable earlier diagnoses that will be pivotal to patient decision-making, whether it is to wait-and-see or pursue aggressive treatment.

The picture of health The long-term research partnership between Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Geisinger opens the door to a sweeping analysis of genomes for each sample in hopes of developing a clearer picture of how genetic variants link to certain diseases and health conditions. If research and testing shows one person is predisposed to a specific condition, such as cardiovascular disease or certain cancers, that person can change his or her lifestyle, be aware of symptoms, stay on top of testing, and inform blood relatives of the test’s findings, encouraging them to get tested as well. As more people get tested and add their samples to the biobank, a much sharper image of genetic links to diseases begins to form, making the dream of a more informed society, working proactively for better health, a reality. All of this — the transformation of medicine throughout the world, one person at a time — is happening right here in central and northeast Pennsylvania. And it all began with the concept of caring for not just one patient, but generations of them, far into the future. *Name changed.

Seeing the whole picture The Autism & Developmental Medicine Institute (ADMI) offers a comprehensive approach of clinical care, research and education. Janell Weaver was looking for a place where she could be helped just as much as her son, CJ. She needed to understand his autism. Her questions were endless; the answers were not. She turned to the Autism & Developmental Medicine Institute (ADMI) at Geisinger. Her appointment was set for one year later since the demand to see a developmental pediatrician was so high. Parents nationwide faced waits of up to three years, so Janell was elated when CJ’s visit instead happened in a matter of months. Today, ADMI at Geisinger, whose comprehensive approach is one of clinical care, research and education, has cut its appointment backlog to less than three months. Janell Weaver’s son, CJ

“It was the first place that heard me and actually saw my son — I mean really heard what I was saying and really saw my son,” Janell said. “It felt like they really cared about CJ and about me. It felt like, finally, we are where we need to be.”

“It was the first place that heard me and actually saw my son — I mean really heard what I was saying and really saw my son.”

18 2015 Gifts and Grants Report: Seeing the Whole Picture

ADMI at Geisinger gave Janell a diagnosis when others could or would not. It meant her insurance company would cover her son’s therapies and cemented the family’s commitment to ADMI at Geisinger. The Weavers’ charity race, “CJ’s Resolution Challenge,” gives back because ADMI at Geisinger gave Janell what she needed most – an answer.

“It’s the act of giving, in doing something, that gives us all hope,” she said.

The gift of hope Hope allows for things once thought impossible to become reality. ADMI at Geisinger has one example of this in its mock MRI machine that was purchased through support from the community. The test is a diagnostic tool, but one that can agitate and upset children, especially those who are already suffering. Letting a child acclimate to the mock machine before a real MRI has produced better test results — something that was so difficult in the past. This is just one unique approach at a very unique place, where behavioral and medical assessments, and community and family support seamlessly integrate with research. This approach joins Geisinger clinicians and researchers with Bucknell University educators, scientists and students. ADMI is transcending how autism is understood in every home and throughout the world. Its research findings in genomics, developmental neuropsychology and neuroimaging analytics are going from the lab to the frontline. Donors have supported the pioneering program in so many ways, but giving to create a network of regional centers, with a main hub at the Geisinger Bucknell Center in Lewisburg, will bring the care closer to home for families in need.

Commitment to community ADMI’s community outreach events, such as races and zoo days, raise autism awareness, while educational programs grow support and understanding for what families experience. They are also a way for kids to enjoy the things other kids enjoy, like a night at the movies.

The “From the Clinic to the Classroom” training series has its eye on the future. Experts, such as genetic counselors and pediatric psychologists, present cutting-edge information to parents and teachers to better prepare them for the transitions that will come as a child ages.

“At the Sensory Friendly Film Series, no one gets upset if a kid is laughing inappropriately or running up and down the aisle because every parent there has been in those same shoes,” Janell said. “The lights are dimmed, the volume is reasonable, there are no previews and outside snacks are welcome. It’s a relaxing atmosphere and an opportunity to meet other parents.”

Leading with empathy and patience, as well as groundbreaking clinical care and research, ADMI is changing more than just CJ and Janell’s lives. The staff and researchers have the chance to revolutionize the way children’s neurodevelopmental disorders are approached, talked about, and treated for generations to come.

Performing miracles Donor support for children’s programs at Geisinger helps kids get healthy while still being kids. Children’s Miracle Network at Geisinger is important to the Scandle family. Their son, Cameron, born two and a half months premature, spent 45 days in the neonatal intensive care unit. Fear and anxiety filled every long day and sleepless night for parents Bo and Laurie. Through skillful and compassionate care at Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, Cameron is now a busy teenager, participating in track and field, basketball and school plays, as well as serving as class president. Now they see their teenage son and are reminded of the support Children’s Miracle Network at Geisinger gave their family during that dark time.

(From left) Laurie, Cameron and Bo Scandle present a check to WBRE/WYOU personality Candice Kelly during Children’s Miracle Network Celebration Weekend in 2015.

More than exceptional healthcare, Children’s Miracle Network funds and Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital also help make sure the fun and essence of being a kid is not lost when an illness or trauma strikes.

20 2015 Gifts and Grants Report: Performing Miracles

“When I looked around the NICU on those long days and nights, I saw so much equipment, everything from machines to comfy chairs, stamped with ‘Provided by Children’s Miracle Network,’” Bo said. “So when we finally got to take Cameron home, we decided we wanted to do something to give back, provide something for people who don’t know they’re gonna need it.” The family’s annual Cameron’s Miracle Golf Tournament celebrates their son’s recovery, but also raises money so the next generation of kids and families that need comfort will find it waiting for them at Geisinger. The Children’s Miracle Network program brings out the best in people, from the Scandle family to the employees of Geisinger Health System to communities throughout northeast and central Pennsylvania. Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital envelops children and families in a blanket of care and kindness that sets the pace for others aiding children in similar circumstances.

Donor gifts have made it possible for Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital in Danville, as well as pediatric services throughout Geisinger’s service area, to purchase state-of-the-art equipment and provide programs and services for those in need. More than exceptional healthcare, Children’s Miracle Network funds and Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital also help make sure the fun and essence of being a kid is not lost when an illness or trauma strikes.

Better health … Children’s Miracle Network at Geisinger and its donors work tirelessly to provide for children at critical moments in their lives. Some recent additions to Geisinger’s pediatric programs are a fully equipped transport ambulance that brings babies and children to Geisinger from community hospitals and accident scenes, as well as cardiovascular ultrasound equipment and new ventilators in the NICU. Donors have also led the charge in expanding Child Life Services, which reminds kids each moment is special and every emotion is OK. Child Life aids children and their families in important, non-medical issues, including how to help kids just be kids. For children celebrating birthdays while in the hospital, they arrange a special party or a visit with a furry friend from Tender Paws pet therapy to ease anxiety. Child Life Services also provide support, education and coping skills for kids in an unfamiliar medical environment. Child Life, so successful at Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, is now a fixture at Geisinger Wyoming Valley in Wilkes-Barre as well.

… and a bit of fun Geisinger and Children’s Miracle Network are peerless when it comes to caring for kids in every way possible. There is no better way to know a child feels better than to see a smile. Children’s Miracle Network at Geisinger and its donors work hard to make that happen. It’s not difficult to grin when a tiny turtle or alligator Wunderwagon winds through the halls of the Children’s Hospital, providing safe passage between the surgical and pediatric intensive care units. Movies, video and board games, Internet access and more … many of us take these simple pleasures and pastimes for granted. But for a hospitalized child, they are prescriptions for fun and stress relief that can be just as important to their recovery as surgeries and medications.

Advocates for children

The Child Advocacy Center, a division of Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, also aids children in desperate need. In these cases, the children have suffered from physical or sexual abuse. The Child Advocacy Center acts as the protective “hub” of an investigation, where all interviews and examinations take place just once. Through this model, the trauma of repeated questioning by different medical and law enforcement professionals is lessened for the child. In this environment of safety and protection, the staff of the Child Advocacy Center provides medical exams, counseling and case tracking. Gifts to the Child Advocacy Center provide services that go directly to a child’s well-being. If they are hurt or shattered, a child may never be the same. Children who are helped by Children’s Miracle Network or the Child Advocacy Center are going through experiences that no one of any age should have to endure. They force a child to grow up fast. By protecting children, keeping them safe, and helping them to get healthy, their world does not need to be turned upside down … and maybe they can stay a kid a little while longer.

Children’s Miracle Network at Geisinger is there at a precarious time for a child and his or her family, whether it is an accident or an illness. There are other times when a child is in jeopardy, but not for the same reasons. 2015 Gifts and Grants Report: Performing Miracles 21

Life’s work Health Careers for Teens teaches students the rewards and commitment of healthcare.

The Health Careers for Teens program cultivates the curiosity inherent in all kids in the hopes of sparking a true, life-long passion.

Making healthcare a career is a big step and one that has probably crossed the mind of every teenager with an eye toward the future, and a passion to care for people. Yet, there is precious little real information out there and even less hands-on experience. That is, until Geisinger Health System’s inspiring Health Careers for Teens program. The Health Careers for Teens program nurtures a student’s budding curiosity in science and medicine into a full-blown interest. A teen’s fascination with healthcare may begin while “shadowing” nurses, doctors, technicians and pharmacists, who then can become a mentor to the teen. Or it can come from learning CPR or observing a surgery and seeing firsthand the responsibility that comes with saving a life. Or it can come from participating in disaster drills that let a teen witness how critical a hospital is during a mass crisis and how teamwork makes everything click. The Health Careers for Teens program is an unprecedented bird’s-eye view of healthcare. Geisinger is not only supporting the next generation of care providers as they find their calling, it is guiding their enthusiasm to a destiny that will define the healthcare of tomorrow.

Training the next generation of caregivers Geisinger’s progressive approach synced perfectly with Frontier Communications and Teva Pharmaceuticals’ participation in the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (PA EITC). PA EITC promotes contributions to innovative

educational programs — such as the Health Careers for Teens program at Geisinger — throughout the Commonwealth. This support allowed Geisinger to expand the program at Geisinger Community Medical Center (GCMC) in Scranton to Saturdays and will ultimately establish a question-and-answer forum to bring together students and caregivers. GCMC, as well as Geisinger Lewistown Hospital, Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre and Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, now has students in grades eight to 12 learning from its staff every Saturday, as well as after school and during the summer. Geisinger is no stranger to innovation. Its Health Careers for Teens program is opening up the world of healthcare to students, and each Geisinger hospital is fostering a generation of talented healthcare providers with roots in their communities.

Potential and purpose Students come from local school districts, such as Bloomsburg Area, Crestwood, Mifflin County, Scranton Area and Wilkes-Barre Area, that are near each host hospital. The year-round program and its ability to teach students about various healthcare professions while they gain hands-on experience from those with medical expertise attracts a wide range of teenagers, which, one year, included Andy*. Being autistic, Andy, at first, did not seem to be a likely candidate for the program. In fact, his parents were worried about his participation and the commitment that came with it. Every child finds a place to quench their thirst for knowledge in the Health Careers for Teens program and Andy was no exception. He excelled and embraced every aspect of what was offered, whether it was attending a lecture or learning about Geisinger’s state-of-the-art equipment, and the program,

in turn, significantly boosted his communication skills and confidence. So much so, he is continuing with the program as a volunteer. The Health Careers for Teens program cultivates the curiosity inherent in all kids in the hopes of sparking a true, life-long passion. Teens, such as Andy, can take that passion wherever it leads them, whether it is volunteering, advanced schooling or a lifetime of saving lives. Geisinger knows the possibilities created by its Health Careers for Teens program are as endless as a child’s potential, and his or her passion for caring for others. *Name changed.

Modern medicine evolves at a lightning pace. Today’s procedure could be outmoded tomorrow and tomorrow’s technology might be obsolete the next day. What will never change is how important nurses and their skills are to patient care. And it all begins with caring.

In a class of their own Continuing education funds help nurses further their academic pursuits.

Keeping skills up-to-date is a challenge, but the nurses of Geisinger Health System are always eager to know more and they let nothing stand in their way when it comes to creating a better patient experience. Many funds established and supported by caring donors are where nurses turn when they want or need to continue their education. What begins with one nurse’s quest for knowledge has greater implications for everyone who benefits from a Geisinger nurse’s touch. Cheryl’s* desire to diversify her skills sparked a chain reaction that impacted her colleagues, patients, their families and many others. Continuing education assistance took her in many directions, but acute care in cardiology was the only future she wanted. When a cardiac patient at Geisinger looked to her, Cheryl’s years of training and unwavering confidence transformed into peace of mind for her patient. Her sharp skills will forever benefit Geisinger, her healthcare team and, most of all, her patients.

Geisinger is a forward-thinker in frontline care, nurturing the brilliance of its nurses. The national accolades it has garnered confirms the greatness of its nursing team.

Geisinger is a forward-thinker in frontline care, nurturing the brilliance of its nurses. The national accolades it has garnered confirms the greatness of its nursing team. Through philanthropic support, nurses have many options for continuing their education and broadening their skills and expertise. This support affords Geisinger nurses with the choice to pursue advanced degrees, certifications, continuing education, studies in clinical areas and nursing management, programs on legal issues, patient satisfaction, new technology or research, or to attend conferences and seminars.

Nurses have pull The Alice E. Steele Nursing Endowment, as well as other funds, was established for nurses to transform through further training and tap into their talents. So, being at the top of their game is important to them. Their dedication has not gone unnoticed by The American Nurses Credentialing Center. Geisinger Medical Center in Danville earned the designation of a Magnet hospital due to its world-class nursing team. Out of the more than 6,000 eligible hospitals, only 17 in the state and 423 in the country can claim this prestigious title. The Magnet designation is an honor that goes to hospitals with nursing staffs that provide the best in care. It is awarded as a result of strong nursing

leadership, and dedicated nurses who maintain an open dialogue with healthcare teams and whose input is valued in the decision-making process regarding patient care. Thanks to donor support, The Alice E. Steele Nursing Endowment and other nursing education funds will continue to keep these exceptional caregivers close to home for the many patients who have — and will — rely on their skills. *Name changed.

Alec Ewing Healing Garden at Geisinger Medical Center

Enhancing our services, expanding our reach At Geisinger, our most important asset is our people: our patients, their families, our employees. And we make great investments in our people through advanced training and education for our caregivers, and enhanced programs and services for our patients, helping them to have access to the care they need close to where they live and work. With all of “our people” in mind, Geisinger has made great strides in growing services to care for more people and meet more community health needs.

More than brick and mortar Larry Quinton, technical specialist, Automated Testing Lab, checks automated analyzers on the new line.

With all of “our people” in mind, Geisinger has made great strides in growing services to care for more people and meet more community health needs.

The freshly opened, state-of-the-art Laboratory Medicine Building at Geisinger Medical Center (GMC) in Danville brings together the work of 400 scientists, physicians and staff that had been scattered in buildings all across campus. Their use of cutting-edge technology and their closer proximity to intensive care units, emergency departments and operating rooms gets results in the hands of doctors faster than ever before. The speed of their turnaround time has made a huge impact on critically ill patients and those deciding their care plans. The Danville campus is also seeing expansions made to its Woodbine Lane facility. In addition to enhancing the existing programs (dermatology, interventional pain management and orthopaedic sports medicine, among others), the larger facility will also house ophthalmology, as well as family practice and pediatric clinics, providing easier access and parking for patients. One of the newer members of the Geisinger family, Geisinger Community Medical Center (GCMC) in Scranton has been revitalized through extensive renovations and improvements made possible in part through philanthropic funds. A new 14-room operating suite houses up-to-the-minute surgical equipment to complement the highly trained surgeons and staff. Geisinger also added a new 18-bed intensive care unit with electronic monitoring capabilities, allowing doctors to use telemedicine to deliver better care, even at a distance. More clinical and physician offices are also available, increasing and improving access.

26 2015 Gifts and Grants Report: Enhancing Our Services, Expanding Our Reach

Caring for people, caring for the environment As Geisinger’s footprint for healthcare continues to expand across Pennsylvania, leadership is careful to keep in mind the health system’s “carbon footprint” as well. All new construction is working towards LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, verifying that the construction and maintenance of the building is sustainable and environmentally sound. The Henry Hood Center for Health Research, Geisinger Gray’s Woods in State College, the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Critical Care Building and Frank M. and Dorothea Henry Cancer Center, and many others are LEED certified and considered exemplars of green construction. Even Geisinger’s existing structures are adopting a greener philosophy. For example, Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital worked with the West Penn Power Sustainable Energy Fund to add solar panels to the Danville hospital’s rooftops, which provide 100 percent clean energy and more than ten percent of the hospital’s energy needs.

Green in more ways than one Beginning from a standpoint of care, Geisinger recognized that green spaces — and not just those that use sustainable energy — are important features of patient care. With help from the EwingCole Charitable Foundation, GMC now houses the Alec Ewing Healing Garden, created to be a restful spot of quiet reflection for patients and employees alike. Housing evergreen bushes, comfortable benches, flowering trees and winding pathways, the healing garden draws visitors year-round who seek peace and tranquility in the middle of what could be a hectic time. Quieting and calming the mind and spirit, the healing garden is an important green space for GMC, helping patients, families and even employees find solace in the midst of strife. It begins with care for the person, body and mind, and ripples out to include caring for the beautiful rural Pennsylvania landscape.
