SPORTS COMPLEX ALMOST COMPLETE

One of the refurbished snooker rooms. Photo by Donovan Studios. Work is almost complete in the newly refurbished Rathkeale Sports Complex which has been part leased to Limerick Youth Services. Rathkeale retains the Snooker Hall, while Limerick Youth Services have extended the ground floor providing an Internet Cafe, Games Room, Fire Escape, Kitchen and Toilets.

We visited the Snooker area and were amazed at the improvements: bright colours, new carpets, lighting and heating and a private entrance. C.C.T.V. will be installed this week. Great credit is due to the engineers, builders, local electrician, John Lyons and O’Sullivan Iron Works and all who have contributed. The Local Community Employment Project has spent hundreds of hours working there painting the place from top to bottom. Well done to all involved. Anthony O’Flaherty is the Chairman of the Snooker Club and it is hoped he will be able to get the local players back to the glory days of old.

St Patrick’s Day. We need volunteers to steward on the day. If you are interested in helping out, please contact any of the committee Alison O’Riordan, Katie Sheehy, Noreen Hogan, Nicola Hogan, Cathryn Smullen, Anne Gaughan, Sian Wilmott, Tom Enright, Jason Dowling and Valerie O’Riordan. Or contact 087-2755735.

Saturday 15th March Rathkeale House Hotel 9.30pm Music by Blue Bayou Foley’s Bar & Restaurant – Reen’s Pike 9.30 Music Special Quest. Sunday 16th March 1. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, although he was born in Britain, around 385AD. His parents Calpurnius and Conchessa were Roman citizens living in either Scotland or Wales, according to different versions of his story. 2. As a boy of 14 he was captured and taken to Ireland where he spent six years in slavery herding sheep. He returned to Ireland in his 30s as a missionary among the Celtic pagans. 3. Legend has it that he used the native shamrock as a symbol of the Holy Trinity when preaching and brought the Latin alphabet to Ireland. 4. Miracles attributed to him include the driving of serpents out of Ireland. However, evidence suggests post-glacial Ireland never had any snakes in the first place. 5. Wearing green, eating green food and even drinking green beer is said to commemorate St. Patrick's use of the shamrock - although blue was the original colour of his vestments. 6. St. Patrick was said to have proclaimed that everyone should have a drop of the "hard stuff" on his feast day after chastising an innkeeper who served a short measure of whiskey. In the custom known as "drowning the shamrock", the shamrock that has been worn on a lapel or hat is put in the last drink of the evening. 7. Popular Irish toasts on St. Patrick's Day include: may the roof above us never fall in, and may we friends beneath it never fall out. 8. St. Patrick's Day was first celebrated in America in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1737. Around 34 million modern Americans claim Irish ancestry. 9. It is believed that St. Patrick died on March 17 in 461AD. It is a national holiday in Ireland, and on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean, which was founded by Irish refugees. It is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a provincial holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland. 10. Dublin has a parade that attracts hundreds of thousands of people, while in Chicago the river is dyed green for a few hours. The biggest parade is normally held in New York, while the largest celebration in the southern hemisphere is in Sydney, Australia. The little bird told me this week Lisa Marie is 10, Lorcan is 3, Ashling is 5 and Maurice is 7.

The National Spring Clean-Up will take place again this year. To coincide with this the County Council has agreed with the Schools in the town that they would target the week of the 7th to 14th April as the clean up week for Rathkeale town and parish. Pupils in St. Anne’s, St. Joseph’s as well as Colaiste na Trocaire will lead the campaign this year, targeting specific areas in the town and countryside as well as encouraging their parents to clean up houses, roads and streets. This is an ideal opportunity to work together for the benefit of the community. Often it takes the eyes and awareness of the younger generation to make adults aware of looking after their environment. In this way we can heighten awareness of litter and waste, heighten the importance of recycling and looking after our environment. Over 3,500 Schools took part in the Green Schools’ Project last year. Both Primary Schools are hoping to get their third Green Flag this year while students in Colaiste na Trocaire are focusing on the numerous other ways to improve our environment. Over the next few weeks we will be publishing more information on the plans for Rathkeale Clean-Up Week: April 7th to 14th.

The Rathkeale side were on top in every sector of the pitch and on the day were too strong for the Hoops. Playing against a very stiff wind, we took the lead on 15 minutes, when the in-form Patrick Johnson raced onto Aaron’s astute pass and finished clinically. Shortly after, both players were involved with Andrew to set up team captain Micheal for our second. With our defence of Colin, Paudie, Micheal and Gavin in complete ascendancy, our opponents rarely got sight of Dean or Niall on our goal. In the second half we scored three unanswered goals, via Aaron, Andrew and Patrick to finish off a satisfactory day’s work, with all our players giving a very good account of themselves Team Dean Kennelly, Micheal Brennan, Gavin McCarthy, Colin Fitzgerald, Paudie Mulcaire, Andrew Meade, Sean Malone, Micheal Mulcahy (capt.), Patrick Johnson, Aaron Hogan, Mark Hogan. Under 16s Ladies Kilmallock 0 Rathkeale 4 We were away Saturday for our first league game since December, due to the bad weather. We had only 11 players available on the day, but I must say all girl gave their all on the day to secure 3 valuable points. We played the first half against a strong wind. Our back four and Meadbh in goals withstood anything the home team threw at us. Our four midfielders and Aine and Katie upfront worked hard with little ball coming their way. We went in at half time 0-0 fairly happy. With a strong wind at our backs we started the 2nd half well, pressing the home team high up the field and our hard work paid off when Aine put us one up with a nice finish. The home team were relying on catching us on the break but our back 4 were superb on the day. Good work between Chloe and Katie set up Eadaoin for our 2nd and we were well on top at this stage. We added two more goals
