JANUARY 2013

PRESIDENT CORNER

A very Happy New Year to everyone! I truly hope Santa was good to you all! I have just returned from Lake of Bays where I stayed for 10 days at my cottage. It was beautiful! Snowy and cold. Just as we all remember winter to be whether it really always was or not. The kids were in and out tobogganing at will, sliding on the ice or snow boarding right outside the door. Perfect. No treks to the ski hills or to the malls. Very relaxing for we adults and so much fun and so healthy for the kids. Hopefully all those nasty flu bugs were left in the cold!! Our Christmas party prior to the holidays really was excellent. I hope you all enjoyed yours as much as I did. The food was terrific. For those of you who are interested, we will be sponsoring a new club hopefully beginning in February. Please tell your friends who may wish to join. This will be announced in the NEXT newsletter. See you January 10 at 10 a.m. Lynne Who am I? Our Who Am I presenter for this month is Linda Knapp and will be introduced by Lynne Hagen.

Ronnie Slaman.

Below is the cookie recipe that I used for the Probus October meeting. Would you please put it in the newsletter? Thanks so much

Heather Ramsay OATMEAL COOKIES 3 cups brown sugar 3 cups butter 3 cups all-purpose flour 6 cups oatmeal and 1-tablespoon baking soda Combine all and knead well, form into small balls and put on an un-greased cookie sheet flatten each ball with bottom of a glass that has been greased with butter & then dipped in sugar. Bake at 350-degree oven for 10-to12 min.

In My Hand I Hold A Ball, White And Dimpled...Rather Small. Oh, How Bland It Does Appear, This Harmless Looking Little Sphere. By Its Size I Could Not Guess The Awesome Strength It Does Possess. But Since I Fell Beneath Its Spell, I've Wandered Through The Fires Of Hell. My Life Has Not Been Quite The Same Since I Chose To Play This Stupid Game It Rules My Mind For Hours On End; A Fortune It Has Made Me Spend. It Has Made Me Curse And Made Me Cry, And Hate Myself And Want To Die. It Promises Me A Thing Called Par, If I Hit It Straight And Far. To Master Such A Tiny Ball, Should Not Be Very Hard At All. But My Desires The Ball Refuses, And Does Exactly As It Chooses. It Hooks And Slices, Dribbles And Dies, And Disappears Before My Eyes. Often It Will Have A Whim, To Hit A Tree Or Take A Swim. With Miles Of Grass On Which To Land, It Finds A Tiny Patch Of Sand. Then Has Me Offering Up My Soul, If Only It Would Find The Hole. It's Made Me Whimper Like A Pup, And Swear That I Will Give It Up. And Take To Drink To Ease My Sorrow, But The Ball Knows ... I'll Be Back Tomorrow.

Stand proud, noble swingers of clubs and losers of balls! Recent studies found average golfers walk 900 miles a year Another study found golfers drink 22 gallons of alcohol a year. This means, on average, golfers get 41 miles to the gallon!

JOHN (JACK) REYNOLDS MORRIS FOUNDER OF PROBUS CANADA AND PRESIDENT EMERITUS MAY 21, 1918 – DECEMBER 1, 2012 Passed away in Alliston, Ontario on Saturday, December 1, 2012. John is survived by his younger sister Mary Carswell, her loving husband Jack and their two children and their families. A natural born business man, John began his career as a junior businessman delivering newspapers at the age of 13 while living at 911 Colbourne Street, London, Ontario, and engaged additional customers with his personality and execution, tripling his customer base by time he ended this first job at 19 John began working in the insurance industry with London Life in 1940 where he met his first wife. John’s first wife, Marion, passed away in 1970 from cancer. John met and married Doris Perrett in 1971 and eventually moved to Alliston, Ontario where John and Doris have lived since 1987. John’s career began with L.P. Bouvier, an offi ce stationary company in London, Ontario, and progressed to jobs with Richmond Hosiery and London Hosiery Mill where he initiated a company newsletter that improved morale. A chance meeting led John into a life changing moment; this resulted in a job with London Life where he became the youngest agent at the age of 22. John became a prominent businessman in the insurance industry. From 1940, John worked for a number of insurance companies including State Farm, Canadian Western Insurance, Central Manufacturers Mutual, Netherland Insurance, as well as London Life. In 1960, John purchased 3 insurance agencies forming Utter-Morris Insurance in Burlington, as a broker for Safeco Insurance, which he successfully operated and grew his customer base until 1980 when he sold the company. John has been recognized for his innovations in marketing and advertising his insurance business. John’s contribution to Rotary International commenced with his joining Rotary in Amherstburg, Ontario in 1946 at the age of 28. He joined Rotary again in 1961 in Burlington, serving as President from 1969-1970 and Charter President of Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeshore in 1972-1973. Following a trip to Australia and New Zealand in 1981 where he was introduced to the Probus concept, John engaged Rotary clubs to sponsor the introduction of Probus clubs with the fi rst club being formed in Cambridge, Ontario in 1987. The acceptance level of the Probus concept has been very high as there are now 217 clubs in Canada with 30,000 members. John held 2 offices at PROBUS CENTRE-CANADA, as President and also Executive Director, dual roles he performed for 11 years to 1998. In honor of John’s service, his colleagues on the Board of Directors appointed him as “FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT EMERITUS” with a position on the Board of Directors, a position he has served with dedication and distinction since that time. The “John R. Morris Founders Award” is presented to deserving members who create new Probus Clubs in Canada. John’s strong organizer skills and his desire to engage others has been demonstrated through his community service with membership in town councils, support for charity activities and his active involvement in Rotary and Probus. John demonstrated an amazing memory: as a 94 year old, he could still recount names of all of his grade school teachers, Grades 1 -8, and his favorite teacher, Dave Carr. He loved to tell stories about his youth to his grandchildren. During the last 5-6 years, John had been very proud and stoic in managing his health issues.
