Isle of Wight Dementia Alliance Newsletter Summer 2016 Welcome to the first edition of the Isle of Wight Dementia Alliance Newsletter, a new quarterly publication for those whose lives are touched by dementia, and their families, friends and carers. We have developed this in partnership so we can bring together in one place news and information along with details of regular groups and events.

Isle of Wight Dementia Alliance

The newsletter which be published every three months includes an events calendar, which we hope you will find helpful.

News from the Alzheimer’s Society Friendship/Activity Group Our friendship group enables people living with dementia and carers to regularly meet in a relaxed social setting, and share their experience with others in similar situations. Activities are planned around the interests of those that attend the group and include: reminiscence sessions on many themes, art, indoor sports (nothing too energetic!) and music. Individuals are supported by experienced volunteers. Friendship/Activity Groups take place on the third Wednesday of the month, usually at Red Cross House, Hunnycross Way, Newport. Coming Up:20th July – Try some crafts with us this month or listen to a talk by Carers Isle of Wight. 17th August - Come and listen to Cliff Cropley talk about his Royal Naval trip to the Antarctic. There will be a little quiz about the Antarctic too.

News from Age UK Isle of Wight Community Memory Groups We have weekly groups offering memory therapy and social activity for people who have memory loss. The benefits include cognitive stimulation (working the mind), social activities, reminiscence and respite for carers. We currently have six groups that run across the Island. The cost of the group session, which runs from 10am to 3pm, is £23 for the day. We currently have vacancies at all the groups, particularly Newport. Homebased Memory Therapy Service This provides weekly memory therapy and activities to allow someone who has memory loss, or mild to moderate dementia, the chance to ‘work’ their minds in their own homes on a one to one basis. We undertake an initial free assessment, and sessions are then charged at £15 per hour. If you are interested in attending our Community Memory Groups or receiving Homebased Memory Therapy, or would like more information, please contact Jodi or Debbie on: Tel: (01983) 525282 or email: [email protected]

News from Alzheimer Café We have seven cafés at various locations around the Island – please see the events calendar for full details of these. ACE 7 is specifically for people under the age of 65 with early onset dementia. The purpose of each café is to provide a space in which the issues surrounding dementia can be aired and problems voiced. Each café has a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere and provides those with dementia, their families and professionals with the opportunity to share their feelings, discuss problems, and give and receive support, guidance, informal education and information. There is no charge to attend a café where free and informative literature is available. Every month there is a guest speaker on a dementia-related subject. All this happens within the café’s safe and sensitive environment. It also provides a great opportunity to make new friends! Each session includes refreshments and transport can be provided FREE of charge too. For more information just phone: (01983) 220200.
