Guest of Honour Frankfurt Book Fair 2015

Press release 23rd June 2015

Literature and Culture: discover Indonesia 70 Indonesian authors are expected at the Frankfurt Book Fair The Guest of Honour pavilion is transformed into an island journey Frankfurt's museums and institutions to host an extensive programme of events

FRANKFURT. Exotic and poetic, traditional and modern – Indonesia, the Country of Honour at this year's book fair in Frankfurt (14th to 18th October) is encouraging visitors to embark on a cultural journey of discovery with a series of new publications, a multitude of readings and an extensive line-up of events in Frankfurt's museums and institutions. The fourth largest country in the world will be presenting the many different facets of its rich literary and cultural landscape to a German-speaking audience for the very first time under the slogan "17,000 islands of imagination". The Indonesian authors who are due to attend the Frankfurt Book Fair in the autumn, as well as the Guest Country Pavilion concept and the programme of events in Frankfurt's cultural venues and institutions were revealed today in the Haus des Buches in Frankfurt. "Within just 70 years, Indonesia has undergone a metamorphosis from colony to democracy. The social and political transformation is also reflected in its literature and is accompanied by an increasing professionalisation of the structures within the book industry. We consider Indonesia to be an important, new partner in the international publishing network and this year we look forward to seeing how a young democracy takes its own innovative approach to education, reading and story-telling”, explains Juergen Boos, director of the Frankfurt Book Fair." “As Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2015, Indonesia has the opportunity to take a first tentative step onto the international literary stage,” sais Goenawan Mohamad, head of the Guest of Honour committee. “As we are a little-known country in Europe, we would like to push the door open today to allow you a glimpse of this archipelago of diversity. We would like to welcome you not as tourists, but as explorers." Seventy Indonesian authors are due to attend the Frankfurt Book Fair in the autumn and will be presenting new releases of their works in German. Authors include Laksmi Pamuntjak, Ayu Utami and Leila Chudori, who reveal the darker chapters of the country's history in their books by addressing topics such as political persecution and genocide. Andrea Hirata, who tells of his own path out of poverty in his best-seller, The Dreamer, will also be appearing in Frankfurt, as well as lyricist Dorothea Rosa Herliany, who is best known for her expressive and often shocking poetry. With Okky Madasari another member of the young generation of female authors will be there too. And with Sapardi Djoko Damono, Nh. Dini and Toeti Heraty the fair visitors can meet some living legends from Indonesian literature. Indonesian authors will also be making guest appearances at readings across German-speaking countries, as well as at numerous festivals, such as the International Literature Festival of Berlin, Press contact Indonesia – Guest of Honour at Frankfurt Book Fair 2015 Mirjam Flender, Kirsten Lehnert, c/o projekt2508, +49 (0)228-184967-24, [email protected]

the Harbour Front Literature Festival in Hamburg, the Zofingen Literature Days and the Bad Berleburg Literaturpflaster. The Guest of Honour's installation in the Guest Country Pavilion at the book fair encourages visitors to embark on a fabulous, sensual and poetic journey to discover the "17,000 islands of imagination". Avianti Armand, who was responsible for the Indonesian pavilion at the Architecture Biennial in Venice in 2014, and curated this year's book fair installation designed by Indonesian architect Muhammad Thamrin invites the book fair visitors: “The pavilion consists of spheres of difference, inviting you to enter an immersive experience. You are expected to walk around, leisurely becoming flaneurs of the day, enjoying simple discoveries.Lights and shadows are the pavilion's shifting foundation - a visual allegory of the sea -- that drapes a string of 'islands', each with its own narrative: performances, words, images, tales, spices, texts of the past, and inquiries. Our journey inside the pavilion's spheres underlines the facts that the world of books are an edifice built on ever-changing encounters.” The cultural programme The Guest of Honour will be supported by an extensive programme of art and cultural events in Frankfurt's museums and institutions. For example, the Frankfurter Kunstverein will be hosting the exhibition "Root. Indonesian Contemporary Art" (26/09–29/11), focussing on Indonesia's contemporary art. The museum's façade will be clad in a stunning bamboo installation to mark the event. The works of Indonesia's most influential photo artists will be on display in the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt in the "Beyond Transisi" exhibition (1/10–15/11). "TropicalityRevisited" in the Deutsche Architektur Museum will be illustrating the influence that the tropical climate has on the architecture in Indonesia (29/8–22/11). Arahmaiani, one of the most internationally well-known Indonesian artists will be making a guest appearance at the Haus am Dom in "Violence No More". The programme includes her performances, social sculptures and installations. The major cooperative project "Indonesia LAB" – a festival for contemporary art – will be bringing outstanding Indonesian and German artists, dancers and musicians of all generations together on stage in both Frankfurt and Indonesia. Indonesian film will also be put in the spotlight with screenings of important documentaries, such as Jakarta Disorder by Ascan Breuer (14/10, followed by a discussion with the producer, in the Deutsches Filmmuseum) and Act of Killing by Joshua Oppenheimer (11/10, in the Haus am Dom). The Deutsche Filmmuseum will also be tracing the development of the film genre in an Indonesian film week DATE. This philosophy graduate has written many critical and academic works, which often transcend the boundaries of literature, theatre, dance and art. Malna’s poetry collection entitled “Teman-Temanku dari Atap Bahasa” (My Friends from the Roof of Language) was published in 2008 and was named as best literary work of the year by the Indonesian news magazine “Tempo” in 2009. He was a guest of the DAAD’s Berlin Artists’ Programme in 2014..

ANDREA HIRATA

AYU UTAMI

Andrea Hirata was born in 1967 on the island of Belitung and is one of the best known Indonesian authors in Germany. He studied economics in Jakarta and later at the Sorbonne in Paris and Sheffield Hallam University in Great Britain with the help of an EU grant. In his bestselling novel „The Rainbow Troops“, the heroes are moved by a desire to join the modern world, which seems to exist for them only in Europe. The author criticises the impact of Western texts that implant a sense of inferiority in the minds of Indonesians through a kind of intellectual colonialism. The sequel “The Dreamer” describes the life of Ikal, the main character from “The Rainbow Troops”. This modern fairy tale contains clear traces of autobiography, telling the story of boy from a poor background, who manages to study in Paris after enduring a period of poverty and homelessness in the megacity of Jakarta. He is forever dreaming of seeing the world and returning with a good education to improve conditions in his homeland.

Ayu Utami was born in Bogor in 1968 and studied literature at the University of Indonesia. She is one of the most controversial and best known writers in the country. Even before the riots of 1998, which led to the fall of Suharto, she was part of a budding movement of journalists and artists who criticised the New Order regime and were sometimes forced to work underground. Her bestseller “Saman” addressed the search for sexual identity and the self-determination of young women, something seen as a breach of taboo in Indonesian society. The novel was the foundation for a new genre known as “Sastra Wangi”, which describes literature by modern young Indonesian women who live outside gender clichés and who address politics, religion and sexuality in their work. Postmodern narrative structures are another characteristic feature of these works. The German edition was published by Horlemann in 2007. The sequel “Larung” was published in 2007 and will be released in German this year. PROGRAMME OF ART AND CULTURAL EVENTS INFORMATION ABOUT FRANKFURT’S MUSEUMS & INSTITUTIONS DAM - DEUTSCHES ARCHITEKTURMUSEUM Tropicality Revisited – Recent Approaches by Indonesian Architects 29 August to 22 November 2015

To celebrate Indonesia’s presence as Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair, DAM will be showcasing Indonesian architects and their new approaches to architecture which have been adapted to suit Indonesia's tropical climate. Architecture in the tropics was never just about offering shelter from rain and sun. “Tropical architecture” gained instant global relevance with the emergence of Modernist Architecture and was adapted to suit all climates and cultures. During the AM Residence, Bintaro/ Jakarta, Architekt: Andra Matin; Foto: Paul Kadarisman post-war period, the science of climatic architectural design became an international success. For many generations of Indonesian architects, however, the tropics was never a romantic climate, but instead a harsh reality of torrential rains, heat and high humidity. Today, “tropical architecture” is often lost behind glazed and airconditioned skyscrapers or the classic designs of tropical tourist resorts. Such designs are taken for granted – pitched roofs and long eaves are ready-to-use answers – but also represent a challenge for architects to find new solutions. Architecture adapted to the climate is making a triumphant comeback due to the modern problems of climate change and the energy crises. This exhibition will provide an overview of the latest architectural innovations in Indonesia. WWW.DAM-ONLINE.DE

DEUTSCHES FILMMUSEUM Indonesia as a film-making nation 6 to 30 October 2015

Indonesia is virtually unknown in Germany as a film-making nation. Following its heyday in the 1950s, film production was subjected to stark fluctuations over the following decades as a result of the political and social situation. In recent years, the country has mainly gained recognition for its production of low-budget horror films. However, an independent film scene has developed out of this industry from which we will be showcasing a series of films. The Deutsches Filmmuseum cinema will show films from the last 10 years, covering a range of genres in addition to two classics, LEWAT JAM MALAM (After the Curfew, 1954) by pioneering film-maker Usmar Ismael and TJOET NJA‘ DHIEN (1988) by Erros Djarot, both of which deal with the period of the War of Independence in the 1940s. Particular attention will be paid to Indonesia's young, independent film-makers represented by animations, documentaries and films made by students. There will be a total of ten to fifteen programmes on offer, which will include special guests, discussions about the films and lectures. Jakarta Disorder

("BEST FILM" – Int. Doc. Film Festival on Human Rights, Bishkek, 2014)

Deutsches Filmmuseum, 14 October 2015, 6 p.m. followed by a public discussion with Ascan Breuer

THE TRILOGY:

The Trilogi Jawa comprises three documentary films by film-maker and anthropologist Ascan Breuer that were produced in the Dokumentarisches Labor (Documentary Laboratory, Vienna) between 2006 and 2014. All three films were made in close collaboration with camera-man Victor Jaschke. Each film presents the society and culture of Indonesia in a very different way. They were released consecutively, starting in 2010, and have since been screened internationally, including at the Berlinale, the Cannes Film Festival and the MoMa in New York. The film trilogy was first shown in its entirety in October 2014 at the Geothe Institute in Jakarta. The centrepiece of the trilogy is the award-winning documentary film, Jakarta Disorder (2013, 89 min.), which follows a social movement in the slums of the mega-city of Jakarta over a number of years. The political dynamism of this movement culminated in the election of Joko Widodo as the new President of Indonesia last year. Jakarta Disorder has been shown around the world since 2013, including screenings in a mobile cinema in the cities and towns of Kyrgyzstan and Indonesia. The other two films, Riding My Tiger and Paradise Later, are experimental documentary formats that significantly expand the perspectives presented by a classic documentary like Jakarta Disorder. The short film Paradise Later (2010, 13 min.) uses a literary classic to illustrate the historic continuity from colonialism to globalisation. And finally, in the most recently released film essay Riding My Tiger (2014, 42 min.), the film-maker himself makes an appearance in front of the camera. He sets out to find the legendary spirit of a tiger that protected his grandparents' house in central Java. His journey turns into a quest for identity as he traces his family's migration and accidentally awakens ghosts from the historical past. WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/TRILOGIJAWA

FRANKFURTER KUNSTVEREIN Root. Indonesian Contemporary Art 26 September to 10 January 2016

The Frankfurter Kunstverein presents “Root. Indonesian Contemporary Art”, an exhibition of contemporary art from Indonesia. Jompet Kuswidananto, Eko Nugroho and Tromarama, three of the best-known Indonesian artists and artist collectives of the younger generation, will each be given a broad platform to present their new works in the spacious interior of the Frankfurter Kunstverein Joko Avianto has been invited to create a custom bamboo installation for the façade. Indonesia ranks as one of the most populous countries in the world and unites many different ethnicities, languages, religions and cultural influences from more than 17,000 islands that make up the archipelago. Under Dutch colonial rule, which lasted for nearly 350 years, Indonesian culture experienced severe socio-cultural upheavals. Although a modern, westernized society emerged by the middle of the twentieth century, the effects of its prolonged struggle for independence and political instability still reverberate in the tension permeating today’s society. The four artists come from a generation that has experienced firsthand the most significant political reforms and fundamental changes in Indonesia’s contemporary social and political situation. While part of the change was brought about during the 1998 post-reformation transition, the artists' work creates the distance necessary to take a critical stance. Their work defines short-term change within a deeply rooted, complex sociocultural tradition in which the tension between traditionalism and modernity, nationality and internationality, locality and globalism, universality and plurality becomes apparent. Participating Artists / Artist Collectives: Joko Avianto (*1976 in Yogyakarta (ID), lives in Yogyakarta), Jompet Kuswidananto (*1976 in Yogyakarta (ID), lives in Yogyakarta), Eko Nugroho (*1977 in Yogyakarta (ID), lives in Yogyakarta) and Tromarama, founded in 2004 by Febie Babyrose (*1985 in Jakarta (ID)), Herbert Hans Maruli (*1984 in Jakarta (ID)) and Ruddy Alexander Hatumena (*1984 in Bahrain (ID)), all live in Bandung (ID). Curated by: Asikin Hasan, Rizki A. Zaelani and Franziska Nori. WWW.FKV.DE The exhibition will be held on the occasion of Indonesia’s appearance as the Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2015 and is a coproduction with the National Gallery of Indonesia in Jakarta, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia.

GOETHE UNIVERSITY FRANKFURT AM MAIN Conference: 70 Years of Written Composition in Indonesia as the Basis of Modern Compositions 12 to 13 October 2015, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Indonesia boasts a wide range of cultural traditions that have been moulded by local, national and international influences. Since Indonesia's independence, contemporary authors have reflected the fact that local traditions have changed in their literary compositions. They write literary texts in which they take a critical stance on traditional customs and the history of their predecessors.

The conference will deal with the question of how those who create cultural works look back over a history of 70 years of cultural productions. It will bring together Indonesian authors and internationally renowned academics to discuss socially relevant topics. These will include how to deal with violence and trauma, heritage and modernity, local and global developments and morality and immorality. The conference will also include a podium discussion called "Writing about Political Violence and Trauma" with Ayu Utami, Mery Kolimon and Pamela Allen. Organiser: Professors Arndt Graf (Goethe University Frankfurt), Jan van der Putten, Monika Arnez (University of Hamburg) und Edwin Wieringa (Cologne University).

Podium Discussion: Post-Conflict Transformations in Aceh, Indonesia: Islam, Gender, Human Rights and Politics 15 October 2015, 6 to 8 p.m.

The devastating consequences of the Indian Ocean tsunami on 26 December 2004 set in motion a comprehensive process of political, cultural and social transformation in Aceh, the most northwesterly province of Indonesia, the outcome of which is still uncertain. Since 1976 Aceh had been the arena for an armed conflict between the Free Aceh (GAM) independence movement and the Indonesian government that, by 2005, had killed around 30,000 people. Faced with the destruction wrought by the tsunami, and supported through international mediation, the two sides in the conflict finally signed a peace accord on 15 August 2005 in the Finnish city of Helsinki, in which Aceh was granted significant autonomy over its religious, political and economic affairs. In return, GAM abandoned its political aim of breaking away from Indonesia. The purpose of the podium discussion is to attempt to trace the development of the peace process over the past ten years with regard to the province's Islamic legal system, gender relations, human rights and local political dynamics. HAUS AM DOM Violence No More - Retrospective of Works by Indonesian Artist ARAHMAIANI 12 to 15 October 2015

His Story – Performance by Arahmaiani

Indonesian artist ARAHMAIANI is one of the few artists from Indonesia at Frankfurt's Book Fair 2015 to have achieved international fame. Every cultural city in the world has hosted an exhibition of her work and she has always been invited to biennials held both north and south of the Equator. She is known for her performances, social sculptures, installations, largescale paintings, body art and poetic works. The motto for the Violence No More exhibition in

Frankfurt is "Waking up – Growing up". As a young artist ARAHMAIANI was literally 'woken up' by the brutal methods of suppression used by Indonesia's military dictatorship and by the aggressive intervention in cultural policies within her homeland by radical Islamic groups, who stormed her exhibitions and threatened her with violence. She grew up with the belief that an artist must stand up for the rights of women, minorities and economically and socially marginalised groups. This creates a link to Ascan Breuer's TRILOGI JAWA, which will also be showcased at the preview and in the Filmmuseum. For ARAHMAIANI, the knowledge that social change means nothing unless it also protects the ecological heritage of the planet for the benefit of all is what gave her a sense of direction. She links this to the Indonesian concept of the oneness of all beings. In the profound spiritual depth of her thinking and her work, social and cosmic developments are inextricably linked, a belief that has only recently received greater recognition and been explored in greater depth. Curator: Dr. Werner Kraus (Center for Southeast Asian Art, Passau) Organisation: Gunnar Stange (Goethe University), Lisa Straßberger (Katholische Akademie Rabanus Maurus, Haus am Dom, Frankfurt). The exhibition is being held as part of a collaboration with the Haus am Dom, the Collaborative Research Centre 1095: 'Discourses on Weakness and Resource Regimes' and the Cluster of Excellence 'The Formation of Normative Order' of the Goethe University Frankfurt, the Centre for Southeast Asian Art, Passau and the Frankfurt Book Fair.

One-day Conference: Pluralism and Islamophobia 10 October 2015, 4 to 8 p.m.

Nowadays, the principle of pluralism represents huge challenges for society. Muslim countries are not the only countries experiencing increasing intolerance from radical religious groups towards Muslim and non-Muslim minorities; Europe and the West are also facing this problem. Pluralism in Europe is being attacked on two fronts simultaneously: on the one hand by radical Islam, which is experiencing a period of expansion, not least because of current migration trends; and on the other hand, by right-wing extremism, where recent newcomers pose a real threat. What both of these forms of extremism have in common is that they represent a radical political ideology that cannot be reconciled with the values of a modern, pluralist constitutional state. This topic will also be illustrated through a literary reading. Introduction: Philips J. Vermonte With: Ulil Abshar-Abdalla (Orientalist, Liberal Islam Network, Indonesia), Haidar Bagir (publisher, Mizan Group, Indonesia), Prof. Dr. Franz Magnis-Suseno (SJ, expert in social ethics, Indonesia), Prof. Dr. Susanne Schröter (Goethe University, Cluster of Excellence Normative Orders), Julia Suryakusumah (author (invited)), Sapardi Djoko Damono (author (invited)), Gunnar Stange (Goethe University).

THE ACT OF KILLING, Documentary Film by Joshua Oppenheimer 11 October 2015, 6 p.m.

The Act of Killing is a documentary film about three men who were members of an Indonesian death squad during the 1960s and who are celebrated today as heroes. Resulting from the political unrest in 1965, petty crooks Anwar Congo and his friends became members of a paramilitary group that killed communists, people of Chinese descent and intellectuals. In the mid-60s between 500,000 and 2,000,000 people in Indonesia fell victim to such state-funded death squads. The documentary The Act of Killing shows the killers who have come out on top and the society they helped to shape. They were not forced underground, but retained their power and actually wrote history. Still celebrated on state television, they subsequently became role models for young members of paramilitary units. In order to gain insight into the self-image of these proud killers, while also subversively pushing them towards confronting what they have done, director Joshua Oppenheimer made them an offer: the former soldiers were invited to present their acts in a film, and to present themselves however they wanted to help future generations remember their acts of heroism. They all accepted enthusiastically – after all, they were all big fans of Hollywood. "It is my opportunity to explore the darkest and most puzzling aspects of what we are – and, because everybody starts to act the moment you point a camera at them, it is my opportunity to ponder the fantasies and dreams that make us what we are. Counterintuitively: non-fiction film ought to be a way of making visible the fictions that constitute our facts." (Joshua Oppenheimer) "One of the most powerful, surreal and shocking films for a decade." (Werner Herzog) WWW.HAUSAMDOM-FRANKFURT.DE

INDONESIA LAB Festival of Contemporary Arts – Music Dance Performance Visual Arts 6 to 15 October 2015

Together with Indonesia LAB, the six partners of the Frankfurt LAB – the Ensemble Modern, the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm, the Städelschule and Portikus, the Hessian Theatre Academy, the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and the Forsythe Company – are embarking on a new project. In cooperation with the Goethe Institute in Indonesia and the KfW Foundation in Frankfurt, these prestigious cultural organisations have joined forces to develop activities in the fields of music, dance, performance and fine arts, encouraging the exchange between outstanding artists from Indonesia and Germany. Intensive dialogue has been conducted over the past ten months between composers, musicians, dancers and visual artists from both countries. Both live and virtual workshops have been held in Indonesia and Germany to prepare joint concerts, dance performances, exhibitions and events that will premiere during the twoweek festival starting shortly before and overlapping with the Frankfurt Book Fair. Subsequently, some of the projects will also be showcased as part of the German Season in Indonesia. Indonesia LAB provides a platform for unique encounters and an opportunity to experience exceptional German and Indonesian artists of different generations, while inspiring new perspectives in the relationship between contemporary art and society in a global context. WWW.INDONESIALAB.ORG Indonesia LAB is a joint project of Frankfurt LAB, formed by the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm, Ensemble Modern, State Academy of Fine Arts (Städelschule and Portikus), the Frankfurt Academy of Music and Performing Arts, the Hessian Theatre Academy and the Forsythe Company, in cooperation with the Goethe Institute, Indonesia and is sponsored by the German Federal Cultural Foundation and the KfW Foundation.

Indonesian composers and artists join forces with Frankfurt’s Ensemble Modern, one of the world’s leading soloist ensembles for New Music. Eight selected Indonesian artists and the musicians of the Ensemble Modern experimented with Indonesian and Western instruments during the course of their joint workshops in Jakarta and Frankfurt. Artistic flexibility and mutual curiosity are prerequisites for the joint exploration of different types of musical notation, tuning systems and sound interpretation. The pieces that the Indonesian artists are composing for the Ensemble Modern will have their world premiere at the Frankfurt LAB on 6 and 7 October 2015 – just before the city’s Book Fair opens, with Indonesia as its Guest of Honour. In December 2015, the concerts will be performed in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Bandung. The internationally acclaimed Anglo-Ethiopian video artist Theo Eshetu has captured this intercultural musical rendezvous on film. His audio-visual collage offers insights into the workshop in Frankfurt and uses video and sound clips reflecting the artists’ different cultural backgrounds. The film will be shown before the concerts. RUANG SUARA is a joint project of Ensemble Modern, the KfW Foundation and the Goethe Institute, Indonesia, sponsored by the German Federal Cultural Foundation.

CHOREOGRAPHERS’ LAB 07, 9 & 13 October, 7 p.m., Studio 1 Mousonturm Agus Margiyanto & Ioannis Mandafounis, Darlane Litaay & Tian Rotteveel, Fitri Setyaningsih & Nicola Mascia, N.N. & Josh Johnson As part of the Indonesia LAB, the Mousonturm is cooperating with the Goethe Institute, Indonesia to produce choreographic encounters. Four Indonesian choreographers pair up with one German choreographer. In the course of various periods of residence in both Indonesia and Germany, the artists will learn about each other’s work practices and living environment, while discovering more about the other’s body movements. As a result, a multitude of artistic laboratories will be launched in the run up to the Book Fair, which aim to bring together extraordinary characters and create a link between the cities of Jakarta, Frankfurt, Jayapura, Berlin, Yogyakarta, Geneva and Surakarta. The dance professionals will open their labs in Frankfurt and present the fruits of their encounters to the public for the first time. The performances in Frankfurt will be followed by presentations in the context of the German Season in Indonesia, in October 2015. CHOREOGRAPHERS‘ LAB is a joint project of the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and the Goethe Institute, Indonesia, sponsored by the German Federal Cultural Foundation and with the kind support of de Singel, Antwerp, Studio Plesungan, Surakarta and Komunitas Salihara, Jakarta, the National Organisation Committee of Indonesia Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2015 and the Department of Art and Culture of the Indonesian Ministry for Education and Culture.

ART LAB 1 ruangrupa and contact Gonzo 6 to 12 October Mousonturm and throughout Frankfurt Two of the most innovative artists’ collectives in Asia will come together for the first time during the Indonesia LAB. With its festivals, exhibitions and research projects, the ruangrupa collective – an interdisciplinary group of artists including fine artists, graphic designers, comic artists, filmmakers and performance artists – has been making its mark on Indonesia‘s alternative art scene for the past fifteen years and has featured at some of the world’s leading art biennials. ruangrupa uses cities as their working arena or laboratory, especially the fast-changing mega city of Jakarta. The artists draw their inspiration from everyday situations, urban rituals and popular trends such as music videos produced in backrooms, improvised film screenings and illegal flea Press relations Indonesia – Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2015 Mirjam Flender, Kirsten Lehnert, c/o projekt2508, +49 (0)228-184967-24, [email protected]

markets, which provide orientation for the city’s citizens and also lend the city its character. The performance collective ‘contact Gonzo’ from Osaka shares its great passion for anything odd and popular with ruangrupa. They have taken their performances – which are a random mixture of contact improvisation, martial arts, conceptualism and the Gonzo aesthetic of Hunter S. Thompson – to public spaces, theatres and museums around the globe. Their next stop, together with ruangrupa, will be at the Mousonturm. The Indonesian and Japanese artists will use this as a base to go out in search of the customs and traditions of Frankfurt, as well as hidden narratives that form a link between the people in Frankfurt, Jakarta and Osaka. In the week leading up to the Book Fair, they will present the findings of their research in numerous workshops, performances and events in and around the Mousonturm. ART LAB 1 is a Künstlerhaus Mousonturm project sponsored by funds from the German Federal Cultural Foundation.

PERFORMANCE LAB

The joint projects of Indonesia LAB will be complemented by a showcase of outstanding pieces from the world of dance and performance. Eko Supriyanto, Melati Suryodarmo and Jecko Siompo are among the leading artists in the performing arts sector in Indonesia. Their work encourages the onlooker to abandon conventional patterns of thought and common associations such as “east and west”, “tradition and modernity” and to explore a variety of different approaches to contemporary renditions. PERFORMANCE LAB is a Künstlerhaus Mousonturm project, sponsored by funds from the German Federal Cultural Foundation.

Melati Suryodarmo, Sisyphus 10 & 11 October, 7.30 p.m. (world premiere) Frankfurt LAB Melati Suryodarmo is a multi-talent. She studied political science in Bandung, Indonesia, and performance art under Marina Abramović in Brunswick, Germany. In her radical performances, she investigates the body as a personal memory “container” in which different cultural and social experiences overlap. In her latest work, “Sisyphus”, she is experimenting for the first time with dancers. With their help, she explores the relationship between shamanism, states of trance and present-day life experiences. This work uses texts by the French theatre revolutionary Antonin Artaud as its essential basis. Artaud’s texts “On the Balinese Theatre” and on the body without organs are considered to be among the most productive cultural misunderstandings of the twentieth century, and have influenced theatre makers and philosophers throughout Europe. Artaud describes bodies that are in a continual state of development and fascinate by their intensive presence. Suryodarmo takes a new look at Artaud’s body concept and reconciles it with the Sisyphus myth as the never-ending repetition of a physical action. In this way, she presents a mesmerising performance, which is accompanied live by experimental musician Wukir Suryadi on an especially designed instrument: a plough with bamboo and metal strings. Parallel to the presentation of “Sisyphus”, Wukir Suryadi will be at the “Weltkulturen Museum” from 14 to 18 October and will develop new instruments, inspired by the museum collection.

Eko Supriyanto, Cry Jailolo 6 & 7 October, 8.00 p.m. Mousonturm, hall When Indonesians think of dance, almost all think of Eko Supriyanto. As a child, he was taught classical Javanese dance and the martial art pencak silat by his grandfather. He later studied other Indonesian forms of dance at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Surakarta and modern Press relations Indonesia – Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2015 Mirjam Flender, Kirsten Lehnert, c/o projekt2508, +49 (0)228-184967-24, [email protected]

dance, release techniques and other movement practices at the UCLA in Los Angeles. He danced for the pop megastar Madonna, choreographed for the theatre grandmaster Peter Sellars and advised the Broadway production of the “Lion King”. His production “Cry Jailolo” took Supriyanto to a remote region of Indonesia, Jailolo, on the North Moluccan island of Halmahera. Jailolo is famous for its spices as well as its coral reefs and abundant shoals of fish. However, over-exploitation and climate change are threatening its existence and are depriving the people of their livelihood. Together with seven young men, Supriyanto created a dance protest against this state of affairs. The starting point is the dance “Legu Salai”, which imitates the pattern of moving shoals of fish. Supriyanto transforms the Legu Salai into a fascinating futuristic choreography to electro beats, which drag the audience down in a maelstrom. After seeing and experiencing “Cry Jailolo”, it would appear that there is certainly some truth in Eko Supriyanto’s thesis that the future of contemporary dance lies underwater. With the kind support of the Indonesian National Committee for the Book Fair 2015 / Guest of Honour Indonesia and the Department of Art and Culture of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture.

Jecko Siompo, In Front of Papua 14 & 15 October, 8 p.m. Mousonturm, hall When choreographer Jecko Siompo first saw hip-hoppers in the streets of Jakarta in 1984, he could not believe his eyes. The B-Boys danced in exactly the same way as his great-grandfather in West Papua. A later trip to New York, the birth-place of hip-hop, served to confirm Siompo’s first impression. It was clear to him that hip-hop was born in Papua. Like his other work that has acquired international acclaim, Siompo’s “In Front of Papua” serves to prove this theory. At an alarming pace, he presents us with samples of “animal pop” – a dance style that he developed – combining them to form images with relief-like structure. It doesn’t matter whether it’s hip-hop, Papuan tribal dances, animal movements, modern dance or classic Javanese dance, the ten-man ensemble rearranges both familiar and alien forms and even individual movements, which cannot be ascribed to one single style or clear origin. Siompo takes great pleasure in enacting his very own anthropological dance theory, which questions western-dominated knowledge hierarchies and causes the rift between urban spaces and the jungle to collapse.

ART LAB 2 Ade Darmawan, Magic Centre 18 September, 8 p.m. (opening) | 19 September to 15 November (exhibition) Portikus

Portikus is proud to be presenting the first institutional exhibition of the Indonesian artist Ade Darmawan’s work in Germany.

Darmawan, who works as a curator and artist, is also a founding member of the Indonesian artists’ collective ruangrupa, which is concerned with sociocultural developments of urban society in the context of visual arts. In his exhibition “Magic Centre” in Portikus, Ade Darmawan sets the focus on the Indonesian publishing house of the same name, which was particularly active in the 1960s. These years were marked by a nationalistic government and the propaganda of the president of the time, Sukarno. The publishing company became known for its publications, which were supposed to improve one’s personal intellectual abilities. Hypnosis, the art of magic and the occult were some of the subjects of the products printed, which were later translated mainly by American publishers. The books themselves were supposed to provide “answers” when it came to leading a fulfilled life and successfully mastering modern capitalism. They reflect the production and dissemination of knowledge and emphasise the ideological problems that were typical of society at this time and during this period of upheaval. exhibition at the Portikus, Ade Darmawan uses the content of the individual publications of “Magic Centre”, which he has collected over the years and arranges these with other objects he has found, to form an installation. The exhibition is reminiscent of a trade fair stand, promoting the revival of the Indonesian publishing company. Ade Darmawan (*1974) lives and works in Jakarta as an artist, curator and director of ruangrupa. He studied at the Graphic Art Department of the Indonesian Institute of Arts. One year after his first solo exhibition in the Cemeti Contemporary Art Gallery, Yogyakarta in 1997, Darmawan completed a two-year period of residence at the Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. In 2000, he founded the artists’ collective ruangrupa, together with five other artists. Sponsored by funds from the German Federal Cultural Foundation.

“IMAG[IN]ING MUSICAL INDONESIA” 30 September to 15 November 2015

If we think of music from Indonesia, the Gamelan Ensemble is the first name that springs to mind. This orchestra with its metallic sounds and its extremely complex musical tradition has become world-famous. However, it is often forgotten that various historical and cultural influences besides Gamelan have left their mark on Indonesia. The country’s musical spectrum is characterised by such a wealth of different facets and contrasts that it is virtually impossible to sum it up succinctly. As background to Wukir Suryadi’s performance, the Weltkulturen Museum will present typical examples of historical photos, films and literature in the Green Room, all of which help trace the history of Indonesia’s musical world with instruments, dance and performance.

GUEST PERFORMANCE BY EXPERIMENTAL MUSICIAN IN THE WELTKULTUREN MUSEUM Performance with Wukir Suryadi (musician, Indonesia) Friday, 16 October, 7 p.m.

Wukir Suryadi is an experimental Indonesian musician, who has acquired international acclaim in the alternative scene over recent years with his band “Senyawa”. Senyawa is on tour regularly in Japan, Australia and Europe. What makes Wukir so fascinating is that he designs new musical instruments from Press relations Indonesia – Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2015 Mirjam Flender, Kirsten Lehnert, c/o projekt2508, +49 (0)228-184967-24, [email protected]

Wukir Suryadi. Unknown Dance photographer performance “Sisyphus” Saturday, 10 October and Sunday, 11 October 2015, at 7.30 p.m.

Shortly before the Book Fair opens, an instrument designed by Wukir Suryadi can be heard during the dance performance “Sisyphus”, which will have its world premiere during the Indonesia LAB Festival organised by the Frankfurt LAB. In this performance, Melati Suryodarmo, one of the leading Indonesian performance artists and pupil of Marina Abramović, investigates the relationship between memory, states of trance, shamanism and contemporary bodies. A joint project of the Weltkulturen Museum and the Mousonturm.

FRANKFURT LAB POETRY READING with Afrizal Malna (author, Indonesia) “My friends from the Roof of Language” Saturday, 17 October, 4 to 6.30 p.m.

In his linguistically critical poems, the Indonesian lyricist Afrizal Malna explores the complicated relationship between language, bodies and space. He broaches critical aspects of urban life in Indonesia with humour and provocative word structures. In his “visual grammar of things”, he juxtaposes different everyday objects. In 2009, his poetry collection “Teman-Temanku dari Atap Bahasa” (“My friends from the Roof of Language”) was nominated best literary work of the year by the renowned Indonesian news magazine TEMPO. Malna’s poems will be presented in Indonesian and German.
