THE BUSH TELEGRAPH WEEKLY

Is Hornsby still a ‘Safe Suburb’? Is Hornsby becoming more violent or are we just better informed about what is going on these days? What do residents think? Police are investigating after a woman was injured and a man died DIWHUEHLQJVWDEEHGLQ:HVW¿HOG Hornsby last Wednesday 30th March. Shortly before 9.30pm, emergency services were called to the

shopping centre on Florence Street, Hornsby, following reports of a stabbing. Police have been told a man approached the victims and began to stab them. The male victim was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics but died at the scene. The female victim received stab wounds to her chest, punctured sternum and lacerations to her

forearm. She was taken by paramedics to Royal North Shore Hospital. The man was arrested and taken to Hornsby Police Station. Police established a crime scene which was examined by forensic specialists. Detectives from Kuring-Gai Local Area Command and State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad are investigating the incident.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com. au/ Information you provide will be WUHDWHGLQWKHVWULFWHVWRIFRQ¿GHQFH Police remind people to not report crime information via their Facebook and Twitter pages.

KMC Takes Legal Action on Forced Merger Proposal “Our community has told the government through surveys, submissions and in person at the public inquiry that they are strongly against a merger with Hornsby Council.” Mayor Szatow Ku-ring-gai Council has commenced proceedings in the NSW Supreme Court over the state government’s refusal to release the full KPMG report on council mergers. The KPMG report was commissioned by the government last year as a means of reinforcing its argument for forced council mergers across NSW. In the case of Ku-ring-gai this would mean a forced merger with Hornsby by mid 2016 to create a ‘super

council’ of nearly 300,000 residents. Ku-ring-gai Council had sought the release of the full KPMG report under the GIPA (Government Information & Privacy Act) freedom of information legislation. However the request was refused twice by the government. The Council is now seeking orders in the Supreme Court to force the government to release the report in full. Mayor Szatow said, “The decision to take legal action had not been taken lightly. However residents have the right to have the full facts concerning the merger proposal.” The matter was listed for a directions hearing in the Supreme Court on April 5.
