Irish History Tues – 7-9pm – starting 24th April - £65/60 Tutor: Bernard Canavan A fascinating look into the troubled History of Ireland. This course covers a different period in each term. This Term: From the aftermath of the failed 1798 rebellion to the initiation of another in 1916, Ireland was ruled from Westminster. During this long nineteenth century the country experienced something of a

roller-coaster of change; its population doubled, then stagnated, partly as a result of the Great mid-century Famine - succeeded by a neglected few decades of prosperity followed by an agricultural depression that saw the ending of the landlord system in Ireland. Culturally, it was also a period of intense change: it

experienced a ‘devotional revolution’ that transferred religious power from a Protestant Ascendancy to the Catholic Church, who came to dominate every aspect of its educational and welfare life. Join this friendly discussion based class to find out more about our great History.
