Mobility in the sustainable city: What do we need to do now? 8th International Congress Cities for Mobility

Dear friends and partners of Cities for Mobility,

Program Sunday, June 19th, 2016

The quality of life in our cities depends on a simple question: How can we establish a reasonab le balance between the economic, ecological, social and cultural aspects of urban life in a fast changing world? A main obstacle in finding an answer to this question is the fact that, most of the time, political and administrative processes are slower than technological and social developments. Could you have imagined some years ago traffic-signs being painted on the streets in order to prevent accidents of pedestrians looking down at their smartphone? The rapid changes are bringing new actors to the stage of sustainable urban mobility: Companies which see corpo rate mobility management as an element of competitive-

ness and social responsibility; retailers and logistics provider who demonstrate the potential of electric cargo bikes; or citizens who convert public parking lots and stairs into social spaces, to name just a few. Having that in mind, the answer to the initial question is, in my view, a smart combination of careful long-term planning, e.g. by Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans, and quick measures which are visible, effective and give us a glimpse of the vision of a sustainable city. Cities have much more to offer than mobility from A to B. They have to be places that ensure and strengthen social interaction as well as offer an inclusive approach to all groups of citizens. I am looking forward to discuss these and other key issues for urban life at this year’s congress of Cities for Mobility here in Stuttgart. Fritz Kuhn Mayor, City of Stuttgart

Interactive session (plenary) Happy City Lab

3:00–5:30 pm

Most cities in developing countries and emerging economies have inadequate public transport systems, as the basic networks are struggling with increasing urbanisation rates. Comprehensive and inclusive mobility planning has proven to be an effective way for identifying the right priorities and measure for achieving a safe, efficient and accessible urban transport system. The workshop will focus on Sustainable Urban Transport in developing countries and emerging economies giving an overview on sustainable urban transport and planning approaches.

Shortcuts in the city June 21st

»»”Stuttgart steps” tour (Stäffele)

Organised by the University of Stuttgart, Team of the Realworld Laboratory for Sustainable Mobility Culture

About 400 sets of stairs cross the slopes of Stuttgart and contribute to local mobility. Join us on a walking tour through the socalled “Stäffele” which offer impressive views over Stuttgart. You will meet with researchers of the Realworld Laboratory for Sustainable Mobility Culture who are testing and researching an innovative method of improving the quality of public space and walkability with their pilot “Parklets for Stuttgart”.

Workshops June 20th / June 21st Workshop 1 June 20th

»»Designing together the sustainable city Successful connection of mobility and urban planning Moderation: Jörg Thiemann-Linden Sustainable urban mobility consultant This workshop will discuss the longterm perspectives towards a post-fossile city and transport system. Most settlement patterns, infrastructure and street design have a long lifetime and need integrated planning. What obstacles, drivers and stakeholders do we see for a proper collaboration of transport and urban planning? We will discuss both directions: What kind of mobility do we need in cities with growing density? What kind of urbanism is supportive for the transformation towards sustainable urban mobility?

Workshop 2 June 20th

»»Making the new mobility culture quickly visible Easy and innovative examples of mobility measures Moderation: Wolfgang Aichinger Urban planning and mobility consultant Improving the public space is a key element for a livable city. This workshop shows and discusses international good practice on how to quickly reclaim street space for sustainable modes of transport. The presentations from Germany, Europe and Latin America will give you access to first-hand knowledge on the implementation processes behind these successful measures, and also highlight effective ways of cutting costs. Together with our speakers, you will have the chance to discuss how your city can also foster similar projects and benefit from their effects on safety and q uality of life.

Workshop 3 June 20th

»»Mobility is our responsibility! The role

and engagement of civil society and companies Moderation: University of Stuttgart Team of the Realworld Laboratory for Sustainable Mobility Culture The success of transforming mobility patterns towards a sustainable mobility culture is of general interest to society. However, a sustainable future often faces conflicting interests, perceptions and ideas. What is the role of city

administrations? How can science contribute? How can civil society initiatives and companies be more involved? Four statements give insight into the work of actors from different areas. Workshop participants discuss their motivations, interests and responsibilities in a “World Café” with changing small groups and work through a concrete case study from Stuttgart.

Workshop 4 June 21st

»»Less effort and more pleasure – Cargo bikes »

in the city Moderation: Ton Daggers, Walter Vogt (Movilization) Attractive and innovative (e-) cargo bikes for loads of 50 to 250 kg provide new opportunities in the city to substitute lorry trips in urban last mile logistics. They are also an efficient means of transport for private use. After testing different types of cargo bikes at the road show on the first congress day (June 20th), the workshop deals with the pros and cons of the most recent logistic concepts using cargo bikes and gives an overview about the “state of the art” in practice and theory. After expert presentations with detailed information on city logistics and projects in different cities, substantial time is reserved for questions and discussion.
