WHY INVEST IN THE UK? The UK continues to be one of the most attractive destinations for global investment, with an economy that is growing faster than other major competitor countries, including USA, Germany, France and Canada. The UK’s location provides easy access to some of the world’s largest financial markets. Within the same working day companies are uniquely able to transact in Asia in the morning and America in the afternoon. Manufacturing generates 10% of UK GVA, directly employs 2.5 million people, generates half of UK exports and accounts for three quarters of R&D business here. All of which adds up to a ready-made supply chain and resource pool. In terms of healthcare, the UK is home to the National Health Service, the world’s largest publicly funded health service. With four of the five NHS bodies headquartered here, our region offers you unrivalled access to market and attractive support packages.

THINK TALENT ANNUAL STEM GRADUATES

Key to the success of Leeds City Region as a place for inward investment is our talent. Nowhere else in the UK has the scale, diversity and availability of a highly adaptable and competent workforce. We don’t just focus on the industry requirements of today, but anticipate and plan for the talent requirements of tomorrow. With 7 million people within one hour’s drive time, nine universities producing 41,500 graduates each year and an extensive current labour force across all business sectors, we can provide the skills you need, whatever your business sector.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE THROUGH RESILIENCE The digital sector is a catalyst for Leeds City Region’s largest and priority growth sectors: health, advanced manufacturing and financial services, as well as sub-sectors such as food and drink, telecoms and retail. We have the highest concentration of digital, data and technology innovators in the UK, plus outstanding connectivity that global businesses already rely on, as well as plans to expand our region’s capacity and resilience. With an independent internet exchange, we can offer the required level of resilience, data transfer speed and cyber-security. That’s why our digital infrastructure is trusted to host databases managed by leading financial data analysis companies like Callcredit and Acxiom, as well as public institutions with sensitive data like the Health and Social Care Information Centre.

Resilient Infrastructure Reducing the risk of data loss, increasing cyber-security and providing low-cost/high-capacity data routes that enable split-second transactions around the world. • Leeds operates its own data centres and network infrastructure, providing London-independent disaster recovery • High-speed fibre routes east and west out of the UK which are independent of London • The home of some of the highest levels of HMC Accredited security datacentres, already recognised by over 25 of the FTSE 100 • Home to its own internet exchange point – IXLeeds, allowing regional and national ISPs to exchange data at low cost and speeds in multiples of 10 gigabits per second – essential for enabling transactions in the Financial Services sector • Much of the region’s social network and streaming media traffic is served from datacentres within the heart of the city

High-speed Leeds City Region’s infrastructure ensures it is uniquely placed to securely deliver the vast data capacity and transfer speeds business demands. • Leeds is matched only by London in its high-capacity internet exchange (IXLeeds) situated right in the heart of the city • IXLeeds allows businesses and communications operators to exchange data at low cost and speeds up to 10 gigabits per second • The region hosts one of the highest concentrations of Internet Service Providers in the UK. The UK’s first ISP, Freeserve, was founded here • 100 Megabit and Gigabit broadband services available at low cost across Metropolitan Leeds • The UK’s largest mobile data network has invested £4.5 million improving 3G reception and mobile internet across the city, with a 35 per cent growth in network sites from 117 to 159 • Over 24 Terabits per second of capacity within the main aql city data hub

A CITY REGION DRIVEN BY DATA Technology innovation and data analytics is rapidly transforming the financial and professional services market. Technological advancements are unlocking the power of intelligent data and driving competitive advantage – areas in which Leeds City Region is ahead of the game. The accelerating growth of data relating to both the social and physical world is changing how we see the world around us. It can revolutionise the way we understand the world we live in and help us develop new services, products and solutions. So much so that UK Government Research Councils have identified it as one of ‘eight great technologies’ that will power scientific developments and economic growth over the next decade. Leeds City Region is a world-class location in data management and the analysis of big data, both consumer and public sector. We have established a firm lead in the ‘data revolution’, the most disruptive and transformational influence since the industrial revolution. Our pioneering research and approach to the hosting and interpretation of data via the Leeds Data Mill, the Leeds Open Data Institute (ODI) and the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics (LIDA) provides unique access to some of the largest databases, leading academics and researchers globally. Our Region’s innovative approach to data analytics and data science is already largely supported and utilised by companies such as Asda-Walmart, Telefonica, TomTom, Marks & Spencer, Yorkshire Water and market researchers such as Acxiom, Call Credit and CACI. It is also a hub for the gaming industry with data analytics, modelling and IT platforms, with companies such as William Hill and Sky Bet having significant operations here.
