Invention of the Louvre: Seven Centuries of French History through the Museum’s Collections

BEIJING AND HONG KONG EXHIBITION 2016-2017 PRESENTED BY THE MUSÉE DU LOUVRE

Foreword by Jean-Luc Martinez President–Director, Musée du Louvre Formerly a royal palace, the Louvre has embraced the history of France for eight centuries. Intended as a universal museum and “open to all since 1793”, its collections—among the finest in the world—span several thousands of years and a territory that extends from America to the confines of Asia. With nearly nine million visitors in 2015, the Louvre is the world’s most visited museum. These collections feature works admired throughout the globe, including the Mona Lisa, the Winged Victory of Samothrace and theVenus de Milo. 30 years after the project Le Grand Louvre, the summer of 2016 was marked by the completion of several major projects, giving a new life to the Museum by offering a more accessible and more generous Louvre, bringing together the public and the collections. These projects lead the Louvre to the 21st century, with the upcoming inauguration of the Louvre-Abu Dhabi.

Spanning from the ancient world to the mid 19th century, the collections are divided between 8 curatorial departments and the Delacroix Museum: Near Eastern Antiquities; Egyptian Antiquities; Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities; Islamic Arts; Paintings; Sculptures; Prints and Drawings and Decorative Arts. The Musée du Louvre is an internationally recognized cultural reference and strives to uphold a dynamic and ambitious policy of research, education and acquisition.

The Louvre in China The Louvre has been present in China through various activities for over a decade: •

Greek Masterpieces from the Louvre, Capital Museum of Beijing, 2007

The Louvre’s tactile exhibition traveled to the Beijing World Art, the Fujian Museum in Fuzhou and the Hong Kong Art Centre in 2009

Masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance, Drawings from the Musée du Louvre, China Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Beijing, 2010

As part of the 10 years cooperation partnership between the Louvre and the Forbidden City that began in 2005, a great retrospective Napoléon and the Louvre was shown in the Forbidden City in 2008, and Treasures from The Mediterranean World traveled to Beijing from 2013 to 2014.

In 2014, the Louvre contributed by providing an important selection of paintings to the exhibition Masterpieces of French Paintings organized jointly by the National Museum of China and the Réunion des Musées Nationaux - Grand Palais. The exhibition was staged to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of diplomatic ties between China and France.

China at the Louvre The Louvre welcomed 820,000 Chinese visitors in 2015, which is a 73% rise compared to 2014. To facilitate their visit, the guide map and the official website louvre.fr are available in Chinese, the audio-guide is being translated. The Louvre also hired more than twenty visitor service agents who can speak Mandarin or several different Chinese dialects (Cantonese, Hakka, Min, Wu). Since July 2016, Chinese became the fourth written langue for all the practical information inside the Louvre: at the Pyramid entrance, in the box office and for all the directional signage, in order to render the Louvre more accessible to the Chinese public. The Louvre set the stage for several renowned contemporary Chinese artists and their creation, such as the Funeral of Mona Lisa by Yan Pei Ming in 2009, and From 1830 till now N° 4 by Zeng Fanzhi in 2014. The major exhibition The Forbidden City at the Louvre, Emperors of China and Kings of France (from September 2011 to January 2012) presented masterpieces of Chinese civilization for the first time in France. This exhibition was a major cultural and diplomatic event between France and China.
