Internship and Experiential Learning
Comprehensive Report 2008 – 2009 Academic Year
Compiled by
Executive Summary Jamie Martin, Assistant Director – CareerWorks This is a comprehensive report of internships and other experiential learning, which occurred at Seton Hill University during the 2008‐09 academic year.* This report continues to achieve a higher level of accuracy as a result of the revisions made to the internship registration process and the development of a basic method to track all students completing field experiences. The comprehensive report for the 2007‐08 academic year nearly attained 100% accuracy by incorporating internship and experiential learning registration statistics from all undergraduate and certificate programs. All graduate programs, with the exception of the Physician Assistant program, were also included. Although this showed substantial progress over previous reports, the exclusion of statistics from the PA program caused the 2007‐08 report to be incomplete. The report for 2008‐09 is the first to include data from all programs of study offered at Seton Hill. Internships and other forms of experiential learning are becoming increasingly more popular among Seton Hill students, including those students who are not required to complete an internship prior to graduation. As CareerWorks and faculty continue to work together to promote the numerous benefits of these experiences, students are becoming more concerned with finding an internship that will support their future career endeavors , rather than simply trying to fulfill an academic requirement. Although employers have consistently preferred job candidates with professional experience obtained through internships over those candidates who lacked this experience, it appears that this is becoming more prevalent as a result of the bleak job market. The National Association of Colleges and Employers’ 2009 Student Survey found that 23% of graduates from the Class of 2009, who participated in an internship, obtained employment, where as only 14% of graduates without internship experience obtained a job. With a reduction in graduate hiring by 22% in 2009 and the expectation to hire 7% fewer graduates in 2010, internships are taking on an entirely new significance for students. A total of 668 students registered for internships at Seton Hill University in 2008‐09. Please note the significant increase in internships registered during the fall and spring semesters of the 2008‐09 academic year compared to those of the 2007‐08 academic year. This increase is due to the inclusion of statistics from the Physician Assistant program, which were not included in previous reports. For the sake of appropriate comparison, the graphs on pages 11‐16 were generated using only those statistics contained in previous reports. Future reports will reflect the more inclusive nature of the information collected. This report was compiled by CareerWorks Internship Assistant, Katie Lantz. Katie is a sophomore English Literature major, who is also working towards her teaching certification in Elementary/Special Education. She is an Honors Program student and was recognized on the Dean’s List for her two completed semesters at SHU.
* Please Note: Throughout this report, the word internship is used as a universal term which also refers to externships, apprenticeships, and all other forms of experiential learning occurring at SHU.

Academic Year Internship registration during the fall semester is traditionally low when compared to registration during the spring semester and the summer session. This trend continues to emerge for the 2008‐09 academic year. However, the number of students registering for internships during the fall semester continues to increase with 71 students registered in 2008 compared to only 30 students registered in 2005.

The increase in internship registration during the spring of 2009 compared to the previous spring is proportional to the increase in the spring of 2008 from that of 2007. Eighty two students registered in the spring of 2009 compared to 76 in 2008 and 62 in 2007. Considering the steady increase in internship registration during the spring semester over the last three years, an increase is likely to continue in upcoming years. However, the increase may be slighter due to the considerable rise in registration during summer sessions.

Over the past three years, internships completed during the summer session have increased in popularity. This trend began in the summer of 2007 with registration increasing to 63 students from 32 students the previous year. Since that time, registration during the summer session has steadily increased. This pattern is likely to continue given that students typically have more time to devote to an internship in the summer than in the fall or spring. Also, more diverse opportunities are available to students in the summer.

Internship registration has increased steadily since the 2005‐2006 academic year. However, this was the last academic year to show the spring as the preferred semester for internships. Subsequent years, beginning with the 2006‐2007 academic year, show a more even distribution of registration between the spring semester and the summer session.

Academic Year
The total number of internships registered increased from 206 in 2007‐2008 to 245 in 2008‐ 2009. The overall increase in internship registration for the academic year is consistent with the increases that occurred during the fall and spring semesters, as well as the summer session. Although this increase may be the result of our growing student body, it may also be indicative of students registering for multiple internships. As students become more aware of the competitive nature of the job market and the emphasis that employers place on relevant experience, the desire to complete two or more internships is becoming an apparent trend.
Page | 14
COMPARISON OF ON CAMPUS VS. OFF CAMPUS INTERNSHIP SITES The following graphs illustrate the percentage of students who completed internships on campus as compared to those who completed their internship off campus. Although internships at off campus locations expose students to work environments outside of the university, on campus internships that are well structured and offer considerable supervision prove to be a practical alternative for students with limited resources.
Results presented in the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ Job Outlook 2009, indicated that 76.3% of employers preferred to hire candidates with relevant work experience, without preference over where the experience was obtained (i.e. on campus or off campus internships, part‐ time jobs, clubs, etc.). Employers forced to choose between two equally qualified candidates, cited leadership experience as their deciding factor, followed closely by major, GPA and extracurricular activities (NACE Job Outlook 2008).
