International Trade Report Traditionally, export and imports are not measured at the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) or county levels, so we look to Florida as a representation of the type of international trade activity present. Florida, as a whole, represented 3.9% of total US exports and 3.2% of total US imports during 2013. As can be seen in in Table 1, the top export partners were Canada, Brazil, Switzerland, Colombia and Venezuela. From 2012 to 2013 exports to Canada, the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong grew substantially, while exports to Switzerland, Venezuela and Chile shrunk substantially. Florida’s top trade partners for imports were China, Mexico, Canada, Japan and Brazil. From 2012 to 2013 imports from Peru, Chile, Venezuela, Ecuador and Honduras grew substantially, while imports from Colombia, Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago shrunk substantially. Much of the change in international trade is driven by changes in the relative strength of the dollar as compared to the foreign nations. As the dollar appreciates relative to the foreign currencies, our exports become more expensive while their imports to us become less expensive.
