Word of Welcome Hello competitor, Welcome at the Students Sports Centre of the University of Technology in Eindhoven! For the 28th time this great International Table tennis Tournament takes place and you are part of it. We are very pleased to see you and many others who are joining the ITT this year. This year we try again to make this event a great tournament and hope that you will have a lot of fun this weekend. The competitors are coming from different countries like Germany, Poland, French and the Netherlands, some are here for the first time and some have already experiences with this tournament. Just like the years before you will play on Saturday the team tournament and on Sunday the single tournament. On Friday you can watch the city of Eindhoven and discover the centre with its café's, bars etc. Saturday night the band called the 'Khick' will play in the studentcafe 'AOR' on the ITT-party and a few members of TAVERES will perform for you as well. More information about this will be later on in this booklet. If you have questions you can always ask members of TAVERES. And if you feel like making a report of this tournament, we'd appreciate it very much. Maybe next year your experiences will stand in this booklet. It is also possible to see pictures of the ITT on the website of TAVERES (www.taveres.nl). After the tournament the pictures will be placed on this site so that you can see them quietly when you are back at home. Finally, I would like to thank all the people of TAVERES who help making this event possible. Without them the ITT would be nowhere! And I would also like to thank the competitors, of which most travel a long way to come here, for coming here. Hopefully it will be worthwhile. Hope to see you again next year!

Siemon Bierma, Chairman of Taveres.

Tournament Rules The International Table tennis Tournament is a special tournament, because it is a very big tournament. Each year the organisation committee struggles to produce appropriate schemes in which everyone can play an acceptable number of games. The tournament scheme will be roughly as follows: Saturday On the first day there will be team tournaments for both ladies and men. A team consists of two persons. The best players of each team are to play against each other just like the other two players. If one team wins both individual matches they have won with 2-0. In this case, the doubles matches should not be played anymore. Only at a 1-1 score, so both teams have won one individual match, the doubles match has to be played. All matches will be played for best of five to 11. The order of playing on Saturday will (hopefully) be as described below. The team tournament will start at 9.30 h. Men team tournament In the men team tournament the teams will start in a group of 4 teams. Each group will play on two tables, of which the second table is shared with another group. This means that all four teams can play simultaneously. The matches have to be stopped at 2-0, the doubles matches should be skipped in that case. The winner and the second best of the group will play in the main tournament. Starting with the 1/32-finals the teams will battle for a place in the FINAL. The other teams will play in the consolation tournament, also starting with the 1/32-finals and so on till the FINAL. At about 17.00 h the finals are supposed to be finished. Ladies team tournament The ladies teams play in a group. Like in the men team tournament the matches have to be stopped after reaching 2-0, in that case the doubles match shouldn't be played. The final ranking in the group will decide if you go on to the main or the consolation tournament. In both the main and consolation round a knockout system will be played. The finals will be finished at about 17.00 h. 10

Sunday The individual tournament will start at 9.30 h. Men individual tournament The men individual tournament will start at 9.30 h with a group of 4 players. The first and second of each group continue to the main tournament and the third and fourth to the consolation round. In both the main tournament and the consolation there will be again played in groups of 4 persons. The winner of this group goes on to the knockout rounds. The tournament will be finished at about 16.30 h. Ladies individual tournament The ladies individual tournament will start in a group. The final ranking in the group will decide if you go on to the main or the consolation tournament. In both the main and consolation round a knockout system will be played. The finals will be finished at about 17.00 h. After the matches the price giving will take place. We hope you all will help the organisation and be on time at the table where you are supposed to play. Please stay in the surroundings of the table you have to play on, because the matches might take less time than you would expect. We hope you will all have a nice weekend and good luck with playing table tennis. Don't forget the Olympic thought, although I forgot. O yeah, I remember. Something like: to beat or to be beaten, that's the question.

Map This year we provide two maps. One map of the university area on which the sport centre is situated and another map of the city centre of Eindhoven. A common place on these maps is the station, so if you can read a map and if the map is correct, you should never get lost. Map 1: University Area

Note: Most important place on this map is the AOR Party place. This party will be on Saturday night. Read more about it under “Party”.

Coupons This year, we continue the more or less regular system for the coupons. You will receive one sheet with different squares for the different meals and drinks. Each time you get a meal or a drink, the right square will be marked. It's as simple as that! Just do not lose the sheet...

Do NOT loose this sheet! Otherwise you could be very hungry this weekend…

Report of Cracow The whole tournament was incredible and now I can tell you that we achieved our aim. We had great fun and we met new friends in Eindhoven. Our polish team remembers especially two main funny situations. Could you imagine that you are sleeping in the sport hall inside the goal and suddenly someone uses loud music as an alarm clock so that the participants of the tournament could wake up; YouhhhTerrible, but these are facts; :) You have to be well prepared for such a possibility; for instance take corks to your ears :)The funniest situation for us as a team who won the tournament took place during announcing the scores. We heard our names earlier than we should:). In a moment we noticed that there was a little mistake; we were the first, not the second. There was a lot of laugh and everyone was clapping, especially for the organizers. At the end we exchanged our rewords and congratulated one another. We regret that we are not able to take part in this fantastic tournament this year but we hope that we will meet everyone next time. Thanks to the organizers for preparing such incredible events!!! Best regards for all and Good Luck!!! Table tennis team from Cracow University of Economics Ewa Gumulka, Ela Skrzypek, Monika Adamus, Anna Pawlus

Fun Things to Do in an Elevator • Blow your nose and offer to show the contents of your kleenex to other passengers. • Shave. • Crack open your briefcase or purse, and while peering inside ask: "Got enough air in there?" • Meow occassionally. • Bet the other passengers you can fit a quarter in your nose. • Show other passengers a wound and ask if it looks infected. • Sing "Mary had a little lamb" while continually pushing buttons. • Walk on with a cooler that says "human head" on the side. • Leave a box between the doors. • Ask each passenger getting on if you can push the button for them. • Say "Ding!" at each floor. • Lean against the button panel. • Say "I wonder what all these do" and push the red buttons. • Bring a chair along. • Pull your gum out of your mouth in long strings. • Make explosion noises when anyone presses a button.

23

History What’s a tournament like this without a history underneath a few of the remarkable facts will be presented. 1976

The first tournament. All participants sleep at the houses of members of Taveres.

1983

A girl from Swansea (UK) is caught by the police with the bike of her host. The policeman thinks she refuses to speak Dutch.

1991

The famous ITT-shirts are available for the first time. It is statistically proven that the proud owners enjoy life more than the people who do not buy it. It gives you the status of an international player.

1994

At six o’clock in the morning after the party our treasurer Bas leaves the AOR, carrying 4000 guilders in his pocket. At 12 o’clock Bas has still not shown up and our Chairman Pieter starts getting worried. Bas home was phones, but it appeared that nobody had seen him and did not open the door of his room. Where was he? Did he leave for a Caribbean island? At two o’clock Bas arrives at the sports centre. He says that he was sleeping in his room very deeply so he did not hear the knocking his fellow resident knocking on his door.

1997

While looking at the program booklet, Max (the chairman) finds out that one member of Taveres is not mentioned in the ‘Thanks’ section. Therefore he decides to add the name to all booklets...

2000

Gilbert missed the party, because he fell asleep on Saturday afternoon.

2002

On the party, Nordin (from Tilburg) is singing on the bar in his undies.

24

There will be enough drinks served at the party, but will the ITT party 2003 be as good as 2002?
