D ear I nternational S tudent , Welcome to Turku! The Student Union of the University of Turku (TYY) wishes you a very pleasant stay. This guide will introduce you to the Student Union and the student life in Turku. We w ish to tell you what a Finnish student union is and what T Y Y can do for you. A s a member, you are entitled to a variet y of benef its, which we hope w ill make your stay in Turku easier. This guide includes information about ser v ices available for students (degree and exchange students and doctoral candidates) at the Student Union of the Universit y of Turku. In addition, information on T Y Y and its ser v ices in English is available on the T Y Y website at w w w.t y y.f i/en. Please see also useful answers on our “Frequently A sked Questions” -page that is based on our prev ious students’ questions. We would love to hear your feedback on this

W hat

is student union ?

There is a student union in every Finnish university. Membership of a student union is compulsory by law for all undergraduate and master’s degree students studying for a Finnish degree. The Student Union of the Universit y of Turku (Turun yliopiston ylioppilaskunta, T Y Y) is among the oldest student unions in Finland. Founded in 1922, T Y Y has been taking a stand for students for over 90 years. Today T Y Y has a three dimensional role: it represents its members, advances the position of students in societ y and prov ides them w ith ser v ices. T Y Y acts as an interest organisation, a ser v ice producer and an NGO. Students’ interests are looked af ter not only w ithin the Universit y of Turku but also w ithin the cit y of Turku and Finland. T Y Y has approximately 15 000 members and acts in three dif ferent locations: Turku, Rauma and Pori.

S tudent C ard As a member of the Student Union you are entitled to a Finnish student card (opiskelijakortti) issued together by the National Union of University Students in Finland and TYY. This card offers you a variety of benefits locally and nationwide. For more information about the benefits, please read the information in this and the next chapter and check www.frank.fi/en.

H ow to B ecome a M ember and G et the S tudent C ard In order to become a member of TYY you must pay the Student Union membership fee. New international students receive their payment forms from the University (Exchange students: International office,

(SEPA-area payments). When doing your membership fee payment remember always to include your name and your personal reference number which can be found in your payment form. A f ter pay ing the membership fee, you can apply for a student card at frank. f i/en. Ordering can be done only on the Internet. You need a digital photo of yourself to order the card. When f illing in the application form you should w rite dow n your personal information w ith exactly the same facts you have informed the Universit y w ith. You also need to f ill in your Finnish student number given by the Universit y of Turku when ordering your student card. The price of the card is € 15.10. It is recommended to pay the fee for the card online during the ordering process w ith a credit card (Visa or Master Card) or from a Finnish e-bank account. If you don’t have the possibilit y to use neither a credit card nor the e-bank, please contact the Student Union Ser v ice Desk for fur ther information. A f ter ordering and pay ing for the card, you w ill get a conf irmation e-mail. By follow ing the link in the e-mail you can follow the progress of your card order and see when your card is ready. Once your card is ready and has been delivered to the Student Union it can be picked up at the T Y Y Ser v ice Desk during the opening hours. Together with the student union membership fee you can pay an additional, voluntary fee to support TYY development cooperation projects. During the academic year 2016–2017, the projects are as follows:

1. TYY M exico project : S ustainable development for W ixarika indigenious people Voluntar y donation 4.90 € Contribute

culture and education of an indigenous Mexican Wixarika people. The project supports and develops the local education system, enabling the preservation of the

local culture and supporting sustainable developments. The main emphasis of the project is on institutionalising schooling at the upper secondary level, which provides the young with opportunities to seek further education and improves their competence in the field of sustainable forest use while strengthening their national identity. T Y Y cooperates w ith the Mexican Wixarika people since 1997. A ll projects have been planned on Wixarika people’s ow n conditions together w ith A JAGI, an NGO, suppor ting the rights of Mexican indigenous peoples. The project has been suppor ted from the development cooperation funds of the Foreign Ministr y.

2. Z imbabwe AIDS O rphans – supporting orphan children ’ s education and well - being

TYY has supported Zimbabwe AIDS Orphans Society as its sponsor project from December 2008. Zimbabwe AIDS Orphans Society supports the schoolgoing and general well-being of 400 Zimbabwean orphans. The society manages children’s activity centre in Harare suburban Dzivarasekwa. As sponsors, we contribute to building a more just world, where children can go to school and have the opportunity to lead a good life. At the same time, we open a window on the everyday life of Zimbabwean children, and we can see at the grass-root level how our support creates permanent changes in the children’s lives. A ll money donated in connection to the pay ment of the membership fees w ill go in full to the designated projects. • For an appointment missed without cancellation, FSHS charges the counselling fee plus €35. The Finnish Student Health Ser v ice of fers basic healthcare on weekdays during of f ice hours, Mon-Thu 8–15, Fri 8-14. Please note that FSHS is closed in the evenings, during the weekends and on public holidays. During the summer FSHS is open for limited opening hours. For fur ther information on making an appointment and opening hours please v isit FSHS website. Appointments are available w ith general practitioners and various specialists (for example dermatologists, g y necologist, and physiotherapists).

If you become acutely ill, you can call or v isit a nurse w ithout an appointment between 8 and 11. A ll other consultations and treatments require appointments. The pricing of the health ser v ices var y, so check the pricing from the FSHS web site: w w w.y ths.f i/en If you travel elsewhere in Finland and need acute medical or dental treatment you are entitled to use FSHS services in other university towns. Please note that the smaller health centres are closed during the summer months of June to August. Those students who have paid the Student Union membership fee for the autumn term can star t using the ser v ices from 1 September. If you have paid the membership fee for the spring term, you are entitled to FSHS ser v ices until the end of August. If you get ill when FSHS is closed, get into an accident or have to be admitted to hospital, the FSHS system will not cover you. In these cases you should have a European Health Insurance Card or a personal insurance. We recommend all international students to have a health insurance.

In

case of an emergency

Because FSHS is only open during the week at day time, patients must turn to municipal health services in emergencies on weekends and evenings. Call 112 for ambulance and emergency ser v ices. In emergency cases, such as sudden illness, unconsciousness or lifethreatening, always call 112. If in doubt as to whether it is an emergency or not, it is always better to call and ask. The

emergency medical ser v ices helpline adv ises you on the help you require. Turku Universit y Hospital, T-Hospital is the Turku region’s accident and emergency (A&E) centre for prov iding 24-hour specialised medical care and treatment to those who have fallen suddenly ill or sustained injur y. The Turku region’s A&E centre (Tyks T-Hospital) Sav itehtaankatu 1, Turku. Telephone adv ice centre: 02 313 8800, Family suppor t: 02 313 8930, Text message ser v ices for the hearingimpaired: 050 592 4740. services There are also other types of health care that FSHS does not provide, such as hospital care and some specialist services. Students who have Turku as their place of residence (kotikunta) have the right to municipal health care. Your home address and postal code will determine your municipal health centre. Weekday emergency services in the Turku area are available from 8.00 to 15.00 at the health centre according to your address. Medical adv ice helpline: call 02 10023 on weekdays between 8.00 and 15.00. (For making appointments at your ow n health centre please call them directly). The Cit y of Turku’s Welfare Div ision prov ides medical adv ice over the phone, number mentioned above. Your call w ill be answered by a trained nurse. If there is no immediate life threating situation,

10 patients requiring urgent treatment should f irst attend their local health centre between 8.00 and 15.30. If you are not sure what to do, please contact the medical adv ice helpline or your local health centre. The hearing-impaired have their own service for the evaluation of medical care, counselling and making an appointment at a health centre. This can be contacted during office hours by texting to 044 907 3824.

T ravel D iscounts When travelling in Finland, the student card will give you several benefits, which you cannot get with the ISIC card or with any foreign student cards. Trains: You are entitled to a student discount of 45-55 % on all train tickets in Finland. The student card must be presented when buying the ticket, as well as on the train. Long-Distance Buses: On the long distance buses/coaches the holder of a student card will get 50% discount on a bus ticket when the distance travelled is at least 80 km. There are also lowfare bus companies such as Onnibus that offer information also in English (www. onnibus.com/en)

S ubsidised S tudent L unches TYY is a co-owner of Unica, a company that runs several student cafeterias where you can get subsidised student meals with the Finnish student card. The student unions in Turku have negotiated local student discounts for different shops, restaurants, sporting events etc. It is always a good idea to ask for a student discount in stores, restaurants and other places. Also, check frank.fi/en for different discounts.

I nternational T utors International students are provided with a personal tutor. Tutors are trained students who volunteer to help and guide new international students. Tutoring is organised by the University of Turku and TYY. Tutors help their students with everyday practicalities during the first weeks and guide them through student life in Turku. The tutor will help you with housing matters, registering at the university, handling the first stage payments in the bank office etc. Please note, however, that your tutor is not your academic contact person. Each depar tment at the Universit y has a member of staf f appointed for that task. The name of your academic contact person can be found in your acceptance letter.

The receipt of your student union membership fee payment will act as a temporary Student ID card, and you will get subsidised lunches at the student cafeterias and student health care services with it, but not the travel discounts. If you intend to travel by long distance bus or train before your card has been processed, you need to go to the International Office (only exchange students) to obtain a special form that states that you are a student at a Finnish university. The form will be signed at the International Office. If you are a Master’s degree student please visit the Student and Admission Services to obtain a same kind of a signed form. Then you go to the train station or main bus station with the form and a passport size photo of you. For ca. €8 you get a special student card for travelling that can be used before your student card is ready. With that card you will get the same 45%-55% discount that you get with your regular student card. Please note that student card is not accepted as an official identity card.

TYY M embership B enefits for D octoral C andidates Doctoral candidates (students pursuing licentiate or doctoral degree) can become members of the Student Union. Their membership benef its are however fewer than those of the undergraduate and Master’s degree students. The membership fee for doctoral candidates is € 36,5. The student unions of the universities in Turku (TYY, ÅAS), the student union of the Novia University of Applied Sciences (Novium), and the Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUAS) run a joint starting package storage where exchange students can borrow a package with household items which they return before they leave Turku. The starting package is available to all exchange students who are members of TYY. It is a non-profit service and operates on a first-come-first-served basis. The star ting package includes at least one pillow, a blanket, two cur tains, a cooking pot, a sharp cutting knife, one dinner plate, one soup plate, a glass, a mug, cooking items (spatula/ladle), one knife, one fork, one spoon, one teaspoon and a can opener. If your tutor borrowed a star ting package for you before your arrival, make sure you go as soon as possible (no later than 2 weeks af ter your arrival) to the storage during the opening hours and show the receipt of your star ting package pay ment (deposit + rent) and a receipt of your student union membership fee pay ment. Before leav ing Finland, make sure to check the opening hours of the storage well ahead, you might have to return the package a while before your depar ture day since the opening hours are limited.

TYY Sauna in Student House A (during renovation not in use), next to the pub Proffan kellari, can be rented by all TYY members for organising meetings and parties. The sauna facilities consist of a combined kitchen and living room, a dressing room, showers and the sauna. The facilities are equipped with a refrigerator, a microwave and a stove, as well as a television and equipment for listening to music. The sauna facilities can hold a maximum of 40 people. To rent the sauna, contact the T Y Y Ser v ice Desk. If you w ish to cancel your booking, you should do it by e-mail at least one week (7 days) before the booked time. K inokopla – TYY F ilm C lub The TYY Film Club shows a wide variety of films, including recent blockbusters, alternative movies, classics and Finnish films. Please note that the subtitles are usually only in Finnish and Swedish. The Specialist in Social Affairs acts as a contact person between different groups working in his or her field and distributes information about current issues related to social policy. You can ask the Specialist in Social Affairs for advice when you don’t know who to turn to when it comes to matters such as well-being, housing or income. The Specialist in Social Affairs can also tell you about the ways in which the students can take action in the field of social policy. The Specialist in Academic Affairs is specialised in issues related to the supervision of students’ rights. He or she can tell you what to do or who to turn to if you feel that you have been treated unequally for example in the evaluation of a course or a thesis. Any faults concerning studies or teachers’ actions should be brought out. It may be difficult for a single student to fight for his or her rights alone, but the Student Union is big enough to make itself heard. Improper treatment, discrimination and sexual harassment may take many forms. Sexual harassment and assault are defined as an unwanted and one-sided physical or verbal behaviour that the victim never approves. Harassment is therefore a subjective experience for the victim. It can become apparent for example as sexually suggestive gestures, obscene language or e-mails, suggestions concerning intercourse or sexual interaction. Bullying and discrimination include for example repeated humbling of a student or unequal treatment based on age or handicap. No one needs to tolerate bullying or discrimination from university personnel or from other students. If you face discrimination or improper treatment in the academic communit y, it is impor tant that you tell a member of the Universit y personnel about it. You can ask the Universit y’s Adv isor of Equalit y Issues for suppor t or talk conf identially w ith the T Y Y Specialists in Social A f fairs or Academic A f fairs. S hrove T uesday – L askiainen

In February, when the Brazilians do the carnival samba, the Finns go sliding down snow-covered hills. Laskiainen is a real winter festival - you get to play in the snow and see various winter sports. The traditional place for students to celebrate laskiainen is Vartiovuori hill near the city centre, where hundreds of students gather. You will have a great time, even if there is no snow, which is the case very often here in Turku.

You cannot ignore this ultimate spring festival – no matter where in Finland you happen to be. In Turku, practically everybody is outdoors, wearing overalls (haalarit) and white student caps (ylioppilaslakki) that students get when they graduate from senior high school. The action star ts on the 30 April – a couple of days earlier for some brave ones. At 18 o’clock the Finnish-speaking people gather outside Turku A r t Museum and the Swedish-speaking people gather on Var tiov uori hill to listen to the music played to celebrate the star t of springtime. On the morning of the 1st of May students gather on the Var tiov uori hill for a picnic. Bring a blanket, food and drinks and come to listen to bands, choirs and general enter tainment.

A nnual B all – V uosijuhlat The Student Union and many of its sub-organisations celebrate their anniversaries. These annual parties are usually quite formal – yet laid back at the same time. The fancy dinner with several courses – and speeches – is often followed by ballroom dancing. When the more formal par t y is over, the informal celebration w ill go on and on in a student pub. The next day, at around noon, there is a brunch for those who feel up to it. If you want to see Finnish student life at its most traditional and craziest at the same time, don’t miss out on the v uosijuhlat!

F innish I ndependence D ay – I tsenäisyyspäivä Do not expect the 6 December to be the wildest party of the year. The words that best describe this festival would probably be “solemn” and “quiet”. The traditional way for students to spend Independence Day is to form a torchlight procession, walking from the Student Union to the Unknown Soldier’s grave at the Turku cemetery. In the evening the celebration gets less solemn – you can expect several student parties to take place all over the city. Many of these student traditions might seem strange at first – especially when you see people running around in coloured overalls or fancy evening gowns and don’t really know what the occasion is. But if you want to take part in Finnish student life and get to know other students, it is worth it to join in and find out!

The international students arriv ing to Turku are welcome w ith open arms and are aimed to include in the activ ities of T Y Y and its sub-organisations as closely as possible. The Student Union of the Universit y of Turku par ticipates annually in the international tutoring of the Universit y of Turku w ith trainings and events and attends the orientation. ISTU ISTU (International Students of Turku Universities

sub-organisation

of

international degree students who aim at ESN Uni Turku – Erasmus Student Network ESN Uni Turku organises activities targeted especially for international students. ESN is a European wide student organisation whose aim is to help the students to get the best out of their exchange period. ESN Uni Turku organises a w ide range of activ ities throughout the academic year. The aim of ESN Uni Turku is to make all international students feel welcome and of fer them unique Finnish experiences such as skiing and skating, sauna par ties and trips around Finland and to the neighbouring countries. A ll of the organised events are open to all internationally-minded people. Some of the events are organised together w ith the other ESN sections in Turku. ELSA Turku (Law students) ELSA, aka European Law Students’ Association is the largest international organisation of Law students and young lawyers. The purpose of ELSA is to increase the border-crossing interaction of Law students and to increase the knowledge and understanding of foreign jurisdictions and cultures. The local organisations, such as ELSA Turku, ELSA Rovaniemi, ELSA Helsinki and ELSA Joensuu, organise activities ranging from visits to wine

ISHA Turku (History students) ISHA (International Students of History Association) represents history students at the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. The organisation aims at creating contacts between history students from different countries, thus breaking the limits of history in the favour of a more international view. ISHA promotes cooperation between students interested in the same areas of history and provides international publication channels for history students. FiMSIC (Medical students) FiMSIC (Finnish Medical Students’ International Committee) is officially the International Committee of the Finnish Medical Student’s Association, but in practice it is independently responsible for the international issues of Medical students. Through the exchange programmes of IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations) and FiMSIC, each year 20–30

In addition to student exchange activities, FiMSIC has diversified project operation, including those related to global health and development cooperation. UTU Debating Club University of Turku Debating Club is one of the very few international student organisations at the University. The working language is English, which makes it ideal for both Finns and International students to engage in all the activities and of course get to know each other. The organization has successfully hosted the biggest international tournaments in Finland in 2013, 2014 and 2015 with more than a hundred people involved. In addition to that, members of the club have participated in some of the biggest tournaments of the continent including the European Championship last year in Zagreb and had the opportunity to practice what they’ve learned, meet new people and travel around Europe. However, tournaments are not the only goal of the organisation and nobody is expected

to participate unless he/she wants to. The other primary goals include the improvement of both oral and presentation skills, the promotion of democracy, dialogue and critical/logical thinking and the introduction of different types of argumentation in a safe environment. W ho T he S tudent U nion C ouncil The highest authority in the Student Union is the Student Union Council. The fortyone members of the Council are elected by the members of the Student Union for a two-year term. The elections take place every two years and the next elections are due in autumn 2017. Everyone who has paid the student union membership fee has the right to vote in the elections. Make sure to use your vote if you are in Turku during election time! Every member of the Student Union who is entitled to vote can also stand as a candidate for the Student Union Council. The Student Union Council elects annually the Executive Board, as well as the student representatives to the Executive Board of the Universit y of Turku. The Council also makes the decisions concerning the regulations of

the Student Union, the budget and the membership fee. The meetings of the Council are open for all T Y Y members. The meetings take place once a month in Turku Sali or Turku School of Economics. Please note, that all discussions are held in Finnish. Translation is prov ided for the international members of the Student Union Council when needed.

T he E xecutive B oard TYY is run by the Student Union Council, but the day-to-day affairs are taken care of by the Executive Board and the Specialists. The seven members of the Board are student officers, elected by the Student Union Council for one-year, part-time posts. Each board member has one to three specific fields to concentrate on. These fields include academic affairs, social affairs, international affairs,

The Executive Board is assisted by the Specialists. The members of the Staff are full-time employees. Secretary General (pääsihteeri) is the chief of the staff and prepares proposals by the Executive Board and the Student Union Council, participates in interest group activities and is responsible for financial affairs. Specialist in International Affairs (kansainvälisten asioiden asiantuntija) works with the international students at the University of Turku, is responsible for the protection of international students’ rights, follows international higher education policy affecting students locally and globally and administers the development cooperation projects of TYY. Specialist in Academic Affairs (koulutuspoliittinen asiantuntija) is responsible for academic affairs, higher education policy and the protection of students’ rights. The Specialist in Academic Affairs is also a contact person for students subjected to harassment.

Specialist in Social Affairs (sosiaalipoliittinen asiantuntija) works with issues related to student housing, subsistence, health care and students’ general well-being. The Specialist in Social Affairs is also a contact person for disabled students. Specialist in Student Organisations (järjestöasiantuntija) handles matters pertaining to sub-organisations. Students can turn to the Specialist in Student Organisations in any question concerning sub-organisations including all kinds of legal and financial matters. He can also help in filling out, for example, applications for activity and project support. Communications Officer (tiedottaja) coordinates internal and external media and communications: website, social media, public relations, marketing TYY’s events and campaigns. Financial Secretary (taloussihteeri) works with the financial management and the overall economy of the Student Union. Office Secretary (toimistosihteeri) provides service for the Student Union members visiting the Student Union Service Desk. She is also responsible for the Student Union archives.
