ISO and Education Standards are a vehicle for the sharing of knowledge, technology and good practices: an essential component of the world-wide industrial and post-industrial infrastructure The key role of standards has been implicitly recognized, since a long time, in the education programmes covering a broad variety of technical fields More recently, educational institutions all over the world have recognized the importance of standardization for the contribution that it can give to trade of products and services, to promoting good business practices and to fostering technological innovation ISO considers this trend of utmost importance and believes in the fundamental contribution that educational institutions can give on teaching what international standardization is and what can be achieved through it DG/ICES 2009 2009-03_23

ISO methodology ISO is currently developing a general methodology for assessing the economic benefits of voluntary, consensus-based standards Focus on microeconomic aspects (impact of standards on organizations and industry sectors) and on the private sector (with possible extension to the public sector) ISO will be happy to share the results of the work and to promote further cooperation with Academia in this field

Corporate value creation is measured by the proxy 'aggregated EBIT impact' Cornerstones for defining value 1
Impacts of standards are linked to corporate value creation
2
Of the different valuation methods, EBIT multiple is best option
3
Method is simplified to avoid financial market bias
4
Impact on operational financials captured in survey (aggregated metrics)

Benefits of standards are identified along the entire industry value chain and its external interfaces Areas for potential benefits in the private sector1) Access to global procurement markets > Lower transaction cost > Consistent quality > Transparency > Economies of scale
Facilitated inter-action with public stakeholders, regarding compliance (e.g., safety, health, environment)
Easier cooperation with other companies on common basis
Company infrastructure Human resource management Technology development Procurement Inbound logistics
Operations
Outbound logistics
Marketing and sales
Access to global customers (B2B, B2C and B2B2C) > Simplified service > Broader markets > Broader customer base > Lower pressure on price > Lower transaction costs
Service
Internal effects on efficiency, knowledge, risk management etc. 1) With some adaptations the same framework can be applied for public enterprises; major differences in the customer interface and the external communication and cooperation DG/ICES 2009 2009-03_23
