North America On September 27, the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) published its quarterly Hogs and Pigs report. The number of market hogs and pigs weighing 50 to 119 pounds equaled 18.09 million head. This was slightly more than the previous quarter and was 1.1 percent more than last year. Market hogs and pigs weighing 120 to 179 pounds were 7.9 percent higher than the previous quarter and were 1.5 percent higher than a year ago, totaling 13.28 million head. Market hogs and pigs weighing more than 180 pounds increased 3.9 percent over the previous quarter to 11.09 million head. However, this was 3.5 percent lower than last year. Sows farrowed during the June to August time period totaled 2.93 million head, which was nearly unchanged from a year ago. This accounted for 50.3 percent of the total breeding herd. During the same time, the pig crop equaled 30.21 million head, 1.9 percent greater than a year ago. The number of pigs per litter totaled a record 10.33 head, compared to 10.13 a year ago. Iowa was the main hog producing state with 20.20 million head, which was 2.5 percent more than last year. This comprised 29.5 percent of the total inventory. The total number of hogs under contract owned by operations with over 5,000 head accounted for 46 percent of the total U.S. hog inventory, down from 47 percent last year. Meanwhile, Canada’s fed cattle marketings during September rose 10.2 percent over a year ago to 142,737 head. However, this was 12.3 percent lower than the five year average. Year-todate beef imports from Australia totaled 195,935 MT, which was 9.3 percent less than last year. Australia was the primary beef import market for Japan with 53.4 percent of the total. Beef imports from the U.S. during August totaled 19,999 MT, which was down 28.7 percent from the previous month but was up 19.2 percent over August 2012. Total year-to-date beef imports from the U.S. were 39.3 percent greater than a year ago, amounting to 123,334 MT. Japan’s beef imports from New Zealand during August fell 47.6 percent from the previous month to 2,560 MT. Also, this was 26.3 percent less than August 2012. Year-to-date beef imports from New Zealand equaled 23,383 MT, 3.8 percent lower than last year. Overall, Japan’s total year-to-date beef imports equaled 366,602 MT, which was 5.3 percent above the corresponding period a year ago. During July, Japan’s beef marketings equaled 81,429 MT, which was 46.5 percent higher than the previous month and was 14.1 percent higher than a year ago. Imported beef marketings were up 22.5 percent over last year, amounting to 49,889 MT. Marketings of domestic beef totaled 31,540 MT, which was 2.9 percent more than a year ago. Japan’s beef stock at the end of July equaled 122,982 MT, which was up 18.5 percent over the previous month and was up 23.7 percent over a last year. Imported beef stocks totaled 109,699 MT, which was 32.6 percent higher than last year. Domestic beef stocks were 20.3 percent less than a year ago, totaling 13,283 MT. The U.S. was the main source for Japan’s pork imports with 38.7 percent of the total. During August, Japan’s pork imports from Canada rose 8.6 percent over the previous month to 12,848 MT. However, this was 20.9 percent lower than August 2012. Total year-to-date pork imports from Canada equaled 91,418 MT, 20.2 percent less than last year. Pork imports from Denmark during August equaled 9,569 MT. This was 7.6 percent higher than the previous month but was 30.1 percent lower than August 2012. Year-to-date pork imports from Denmark were 12.0 percent less than last year, amounting to 73,353 MT. Overall, Japan’s total year-to-date pork imports equaled 486,990 MT, which was 6.1 percent below the same period a year ago. During July, Japan’s pork marketings totaled 139,634 MT. This was 11.2 percent higher than the previous month and was 4.4 percent higher than a year ago. Imported pork marketings were 3.3 percent more than last year, amounting to 65,315 MT. Marketings of domestic pork equaled 74,318 MT, which was up 5.4 percent over a year ago. At the end of July, Japan’s pork stocks totaled 169,125 MT. This was 2.2 percent less than the previous month and was 1.2 percent less than a year ago. Stocks of imported pork were down 2.6 percent from a year ago, totaling 146,958 MT. Meanwhile, during September, South Korea imported 22,160 MT of pork, which was down 2.1 percent from August and was down 18.8 percent from September 2012. This was the lowest monthly volume since September 2012. South Korea’s pork imports from the U.S. during September fell 14.7 percent from the previous month to 5,710 MT. Also, this was 29.7 percent lower than September 2012. Total year-to-date pork imports from the U.S. equaled 84,035 MT, 15.2 percent below a year ago. The U.S. was the primary supplier of pork to South Korea with 36.8 percent of the total imports. During September, pork imports from Canada equaled 3,336 MT. Although this was up 21.6 percent over the previous month, it was down 24.4 percent from September 2012. During the first three quarters of the year, South Korea imported 30,325 MT of pork from Canada, which was 33.4 percent less than last year. South Korea’s pork imports from Chile during September rose 22.6 percent over the previous month to 2,933 MT. However, this was 8.5 percent lower than September 2012. Total year-todate pork imports from Chile equaled 24,673 MT, 13.4 percent less than last year. Overall, during the first three quarters of 2013, South Korea imported 228,465 MT of pork, which was 24.8 percent below the corresponding period a year ago. Oceania According to recent data from Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), during the third quarter of 2013, 4,300 Australia’s goat meat exports totaled 8,276 MT. This was up 19.6 percent 2012 2013 3,800 over the previous quarter and was up 4.9 percent over a year ago. Taiwan was Australia’s second largest goat meat export market with 11.5 percent of the total. Australia’s goat meat exports to the Caribbean during the third quarter rose 46.2 percent over the previous quarter to 718 MT. However, this was down 3.0 percent from a year ago. Total year-to-date goat meat exports to the Caribbean equaled 1,724 MT, 22.7 percent less than a year ago. Overall, Australia’s total goat meat exports during the first three quarters of 2013 equaled 22,355 MT, which was 16.5 percent more than the corresponding period a year ago. During September, Australia’s lamb exports to the Middle East totaled 4,620 MT. Mutton exports to the U.S. during September totaled 784 MT, which was up 38.0 percent over the previous month but was down 26.4 percent from September 2012. Total year-to-date mutton exports to the U.S. were 30.1 percent higher than a year ago, amounting to 6,864 MT. Overall, Australia’s total mutton exports during the first three quarters of 2013 equaled 118,303 MT, which was 77.2 percent above the same period a year ago.
