Invitation Dear Colleague, On behalf of the Beneficiaries of the “Verenike” project, it gives us great pleasure to extend a warm invitation to you to participate at the International Conference with the title “Enhancing Biodiversity in Mediterranean Ecosystems from Theory to Practice”. The conference will be held at the conference room of the Agricultural Research Center of North Greece- Hellenic Agricultural Organisation-Demeter (former NAGREF) in Thermi (Thessaloniki) from the 18th until the 21st of June, 2014. This is final event of the “Verenike” Life project “LIFE09 NAT/GR/000326. The theme of the conference highlights the desire of the committee to address biodiversity issues and bring together scientists, experts and state holders from a variety of fields to further increase the knowledge in this research field. Also, invited speakers will enlighten us with a variety of biodiversity related topics. All abstracts (oral and poster presentations) will be included in a special published volume that will be distributed right after the conference registration. The conference website is http://www.verenikelife2009.gr The final scientific program and the book of abstracts of all presentation (oral and posters) will appear on our web site as soon as they become available. VERENIKE Objectives The main objectives of the conference will be to:  Present the results of LIFE + projects and other related works that are intrigued by biodiversity issues.  Identify the current situation, needs and problems of forestry related research regarding biodiversity enhancement, the conservation of forest habitats and the restoration natural ecosystems.  Establish links and networks for ongoing present and future research among scientists to support and maintain biodiversity.

Language English will be the official language of the conference (simultaneous interpretation will not be provided).

Oral and Poster Presentations Oral presentations will be mainly for invited speakers as provided by the program of the conference along with their abstracts. For Poster presentations and abstracts please fill properly the registration form. If Poster abstracts are selected for oral presentations, we will inform you properly. The abstract submission for Posters will be accepted electronically ([email protected]).

Venue The meeting will be held in the conference rooms of the Agricultural Research Center of North Greece - Hellenic Agricultural Organisation-Demeter (former NAGREF), in Thermi, Thessaloniki, Greece (Map 2). Detailed instructions on how to reach the Conference room inside the Demeter Research campus from the main entrances appear on map 2.

Registration There is no conference fee. Further, attendance certification and the conference book of abstracts will be provided at the participants in addition to coffee breaks and light lunches. If you would like to attend the excursion (20th of June, 2014), please inform us properly with the registration form before 25 May, 2014. The fee for the field trip is 30 Euros.

VERENIKE Submission Please submit your abstract as an email attachment saved as an MS Word doc file an e-mail it to [email protected] . Filenames must be first author name e.g. SMITHP.DOC. All abstracts conforming to instructions will be accepted.

Posters Each poster will be exhibited for a minimum of 2 days-(depending on the number of posters received). The presenting author should be in attendance at specified times (to be notified) during this period. Poster size to should be 0.8 m width by 1.2 m height.

Proceedings The book of abstracts will be given at the registration desk.

VERENIKE Abstracts Authors are requested to study the instructions below before preparing and submitting their abstract. The author submitting the abstract will receive acknowledgement of the submission. For verbal presentation (15 min + 5 min questions), authors are advised to submit the abstracts before the 15th of May, 2014. The special volume will be given at the registration desk. Format In general, the abstract must be submitted in English and should include objectives, methods, results and conclusions. Only standard abbreviations may be used. Do not include tables, graphs, endnotes, footnotes or frames. Abstracts will be published exactly as submitted, so the copy should be checked carefully for accuracy and misspelling. Title: The title should be in Times New Roman 12 pt bold font. Author(s) and institution(s): Type author(s) name with initials only in Times New Roman 10 pt normal font. If the abstract has more than one author, use numerical superscripts to indicate those from different institutions. Underline the name of the person presenting the paper. All addresses should follow the last author's name. Include full address, fax and email. Keywords: Include a maximum of 5 keywords in Times New Roman 10 pt bold font; separate keywords with a comma. Content: Prepare an abstract that does not exceed 300 words. Use Times New Roman 10 pt normal font. Use superscripts and subscripts for chemical formulae and Greek symbols from "Insert symbol ... (normal text)". .

Practical Information From the airport (SKG. Makedonia Airport) to the Conference venue. Thessaloniki has its own international airport, Makedonia. It is situated approximately 17 kilometres from the city center and 3 kilometres from the Conference venue. Approximate taxi fare from the airport to the venue is approximately 12 Euro.

From the airport to the Thessaloniki City Center. The airport is situated almost 17 kilometres from the city center. Taxi fare from the airport to the center is approximately 25 Euro. From the center to the Conference Venue. Approximate taxi fare from the city center to the Conference Venue is approximately 25 Euro. Alternatively, you can take the city bus for “IKEA”. From Egnatia odos it is the bus numbers 2 and 8, while from Mitropoleos the bus

VERENIKE number is 3. Once you reach “IKEA” then you switch to bus #87 (either E or H) for “REDESTOS”. Please also refer to approximate distance from three hotels that are provided as examples (Avra, Gold Star and Metropolitan, ABC see Map 1).
