Objectives The next in the series of ASCE’s International Conferences on Sustainable Infrastructure will take place in New York City from October 26-28, 2017. This gathering of civil engineers, urban architects, policy makers, technology experts, and related professionals will provide a showcase for the latest developments and advancements in design, construction, technology, policy and education related to sustainable infrastructure and offers a forum to discuss and debate future directions for the 21st century. Conference topics, focusing on sustainable cities for an uncertain world cover a broad array of contemporary issues for professionals involved in the development of sustainable infrastructure. You will have the opportunity to meet like-minded colleagues from all over the world for technical, scientific, and educational discussions about sustainable infrastructure. Structured to foster interactive discussion, the conference will feature a keynote by a New York based international luminary as well as over half a dozen case studies and workshops focusing on recent innovations and achievements from cities around the U.S. and the world. Concurrent seminars will be organized in tracks including Education, Finance, Methodology, Policy and Technology. Tours will focus on well-known and lesspublicized NYC projects, from the High Line to the Third Water Tunnel, the Fulton Center Oculus and the Second Avenue Subway Tunnel.

Grand Challenges The International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure 2017 will focus on sustainability in the built environment, presenting relevant engineering research, demonstrations, and applications that contribute to competitiveness and well-being. It will also focus on developing roadmaps to address the UN Sustainability Goals of developing sustainable cities and building resilient infrastructure as well as the NAE Grand Challenge to “restore and improve urban infrastructure,” all while supporting the ASCE Grand Challenge of how “we can work towards the shared goal of reducing infrastructure life cycle costs by 50% by 2025 and foster the optimization of infrastructure for society.”

DDC Guiding Principles The Department of Design and Construction has published Guiding Principles for Design and Construction Excellence 2.0 that address sustainable infrastructure as well as public space characterized by equity, resiliency and healthy living. These principles bring together innovative design and construction strategies and inform ICSI 2017 conference content as a theme and inspiration.

New York City I October 26-28, 2017 Sustainable Cities for an Uncertain World Given the global implications of burgeoning urbanization and the stewardship of existing and new public infrastructure, the International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure 2017 will focus on what is known and what is not known about the cities of the future. The Department of Design and Construction of New York will serve as the lead organizer of the conference together with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

ASCE Grand Challenge The conference goals are aligned with the ASCE Grand Challenge and the ASCE Industry Leaders Council (ILC) areas of discussion. Investments needed to improve our infrastructure continue to increase well beyond available funding. How do we close the infrastructure gap? The ASCE Grand Challenge asks all civic engineers to join in the solution to: ■■

Significantly enhance the performance and value of infrastructure projects over their life cycles Foster the optimization of infrastructure investments for society.

The ILC has set a specific goal to reduce the life cycle cost of infrastructure by 50 percent by 2025. These considerations factor into the programmatic intent of the conference.

Who Should Attend The conference is organized to facilitate exchange of information and knowledge among civil infrastructure professionals, practitioners, public infrastructure owners, policy makers, government engineers and planners, technology experts, operations managers and leading applied academics.

Conference Program The conference is planned for October 26-28, 2017 in New York City, NY, U.S. The technical program will include plenary and parallel sessions with keynote speakers, contributed papers poster sessions, and industry showcase opportunities. Workshops on specialized topics will be organized as part of the conference. The social program will consist of a welcome reception and technical and local sightseeing tours.

Invitation and Call for Papers Prospective speakers are invited to submit abstracts. The conference will produce proceedings which will include conference papers. Speakers who wish to submit a paper for inclusion in the conference proceedings should indicate their intention to do so. Abstract submissions should be limited to two pages. Authors should indicate whether they wish to present in a traditional session, a poster session, or are willing to be considered for either. Online submission is required to be considered for acceptance into the program. For more information on the process and requirements for submission go to www.icsiconference.org. Final papers will be peer reviewed and published in the Conference Proceedings. They must be six to 12 pages long.

The International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure, focusing on the issues of uncertainty in regard to the maintenance, redesign, and replacement of necessary urban infrastructure, brings together experts from the communities of civil engineers, construction managers, financial experts, technology developers, and government decision makers. Utilizing case study presentations and workshop discussion as a mechanism to compare notes and share ideas will allow a more intensely interactive format for the International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure 2017. What works in one urban center may or may not be entirely appropriate or possible for other cities on the same continent, or located in a different cultural and political context. So how do we learn from each other? How do decisions get made on infrastructure investment? What role does life cycle costing and cost of maintenance play in describing economic parameters of sustainability? How do civil engineers take the lead in the worldwide debates which link issues of sustainability and resiliency? What can government do best to utilize advances in technology? The Vision Statement of the ASCE states that “Civil engineers are global leaders building a better quality of life.” The International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure 2017 in NYC will focus on ASCE’s Strategic Initiative with Sustainable Infrastructure to develop sustainable cities in an uncertain world and the ASCE Grand Challenge of reducing infrastructure life cycle costs by 50 percent by 2025.

VENUE New York City New York City has been an international center of commerce and exchange of ideas since its founding as an outpost of a European trading company in 1628. Over almost four centuries its continuous population growth has been made possible by infrastructural achievements from the Erie Canal and Croton Aqueduct system to the largest and most utilized subway system in the United States. ASCE, in fact, was founded in 1852 in New York City, as the American Society of Civil Engineers and Architects; the name changed in 1868. The founding meeting took place at the Croton Reservoir in Manhattan at the Office of the Chief Engineer of the municipal agency assuring safe, potable water for the growing city. The International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure 2017 will take place in New York at the New York Marriott at Brooklyn Bridge.
