7.1 REQUIRED COURSES Mapping professional practice in a metropolitan context (6 ECTS) There’s no better way to understand the implications of teaching in a metropolitan context than by immersing yourself in the professional practice. International students will visit different schools, each with its specific approach to the urban context. They will not only meet up with teachers and pupils, but also with professionals who focus on students with learning disabilities, on challenges arising from cultural differences and a foreign language background, on the implications of deprivation and poverty etc. The focus will be on innovative projects that combine novel and creative approaches in dealing with educational and social challenges. Education and social work in a global perspective (3 ECTS) How to deal with the complex though challenging and vast changing context of the city? Intercultural awareness and competences are trained in mixed groups and in close co-operation with social and educational partners. Students are involved in seminars on globalization, sustainability, global solidarity, human development, community building, community care and connect with their own interests and study back-ground. Empowering the future (3 ECTS) ‘Empowering the future’ is both a vision on empowerment an a skill lab. Students are introduced into a broad range of creative training materials that sharpen their professional competences in setting-up participative processes of empowerment with youngsters. Students also have the opportunity to learn more about novel methods for participatory research. This course has a highly international scope as It connects with field-labs in different European cities. (www.etfu.eu) Creative and innovative teaching (3 ECTS) International students will participate in a unique one week intensive program on creative and innovative teaching. The focus will be on S.T.E.A.M. education (which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) in pre-primary, primary and secondary education. S.T.E.A.M. education emphasizes the role of creativity and innovation in teaching and learning. It also underlines the need to explore methods for making classrooms more energetic and engaging places of learning and experiencing. Interdisciplinary project work (9 ECTS) Students of both Social Work and Teacher Training work together in an international and interdisciplinary team on a real-life project that matches their area of study and field of interest. p 8 / 11

Your project will focus on the metropolitan context and will be done in close cooperation with schools and social organizations in the field. An introduction to project management will put you and your team on track. Your interdisciplinary project will be closely supported by an experienced coach. In this project it is all about finding new pathways in interdisciplinary cooperation and developing novel skills and a reflective attitude, working towards a concrete project outcome.

7.2 ELECTIVE COURSES Basic Dutch (3 ECTS) This course is intended for absolute beginners. During the course you will learn to communicate in Dutch in everyday situations. You will apply and practice your newly acquired knowledge of the Dutch language in near-realistic situations, such as going shopping, making a telephone call, asking directions and visiting the doctor. Teacher training students who already have a basic knowledge of Dutch (level A2 or higher) are advised to choose for the course Studium Generale or for a 3 ECTS course (taught in Dutch) of the regular curriculum (www.ap.be/OT, in consultation with the AP departmental coordinator). English language course (3 ECTS) The English language course focuses on developing the four main communicative skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Relevant parts of grammar and syntax are revised when and if necessary and acquired language skills are transferred to different communication situations. Teacher training students with a solid knowledge of English (level C1 or C2) are advised to choose for the course Studium Generale. Studium Generale (3 ECTS) In the lecture series Studium Generale - Chair Kinsbergen 2015-2016, professionals of various colors cast an inspiring look on their turbulent lives. This lecture series offers an opportunity to hear international lecturers in action. Annually, the theme is chosen in such a way that reference can be made to every field of study. Students will be asked to reflect on these international lectures from their particular educational background. In addition students are welcomed to participate in international thematic guest lectures organised within the study programme of Education and Training.

8 Accommodation in Antwerp Artesis Plantijn University College does not dispose of its own accommodation. Once your enrolment has been completed, we send you a list of addresses that are available on the private market. Some students prefer to arrive in advance or during the summer months to find a room of their own choice. In such cases, accommodation can be booked in a student/youth hostel for the first few days. Antwerp has several youth hostels, most of them are situated in the city centre. More information with addresses can be found on www.use-it.be We have only experience with 2 hostels: - Youth Hostel ‘Pulcinella’ Bogaardeplein 1, 2000 Antwerp (this is a new square untraceable on some maps – you can find it between the streets “Kammenstraat”, “Sint-Antoniusstraat” and “Happaertstraat”) E [email protected] T+32 3 238 02 73 F +32 3 248 19 32 www.jeugdherbergen.be/antwerpen.htm You can reach the hostel easily by metro 2, 3 or 5 from the railway station (central station) in the direction of “Linkeroever”. You have to get off at the stop “Groenplaats”. From there you can walk to the hostel. - Youth Center Hopper Scoutel Stoomstraat 7, 2018 Antwerp (in the centre, near the railway station) E [email protected] T+32 3 226 46 06 www.hopper.be/jeugdverblijf/scoutel You can also choose to ‘shack up’ with some other students in an apartment. If you prefer to rent a studio on your own, that’s also possible.
