In 2012, the containers/items are helping to build a school in Cameroon. Children’s Home’s in Belgium are orphanages, foster care or a combination of both. Subsidies from the ‘Ministry of French Speaking Community’ provide the basics but the Home relies on private donations to give the children a better life, such as clothing, school supplies or speciality items, such as duvets, pillows, towels etc. 8. ASBL Le Foyer Home Bethleem, Paturage (15 children) This charity is one of Tommy Temple’s oldest that has been supported by SHAPE for over 20 years. Children are sent here as young as 18 months through the authority of the Juvenile Court or Social Care Centre. 9. Le Pastel Orphanage, Nouvelles (17 children) One of four homes housing children aged 3 – 16 years where there home life is no longer safe or their parents can no longer care for them. One a monthly basis, the German community supports this Home by providing gifts for birthday’s and Christmas, as well as inclusion in Parish activities (Catholic and Protestant.) Another community group, led by Tanya Herpich, raise funds in selling beer or in a past SHAPE Theater production to help pay for the cabinets/appliances for a new kitchen being built. Lastly, the German Kristkringle Market gives a donation each December. To donate see: www.supportlepastel.net/The_Project.html). 10. Home of Don Bosco, Petite Hornu (15 boys + Community Youth Day Centre) There are many Don Bosco homes across the world, supported by the Catholic Church. Priests, serve as Directors and offer orphans (not Foster care) a home until they are 18 years of age when additional government support ceases. This is considered a charitable organization in Belgium or an ASBL, and Father's Victor and Pierre also try to teach the boys trades, like fixing bicycles or construction to give them a source of income when they leave. This Home is also very self sufficient and boys learn how to tend a large vegetable garden, they recently learned how to make apple cider from a large apple tree on site, raise rabbits for meat, chicken’s for eggs, as well raises bees, whose honey sells in the local market to help with their expenses. December 2011: Families with the US National Honor Society purchased gifts together with Tommy Temple and Sint Nicholas were given to each child. May 2012: Hosted by the USAF Top III, students from the National Honour Society (and many others whose help was invaluable) hosted a football match and BBQ, to raise awareness of the older boys’ upcoming Mission trip to Rwanda. The Priests raise funds for the boys to travel to a Don Bosco orphanage, where in the past the boys have helped build a school and a chapel for the community. Ten years ago, Tommy Temple brought a call to SHAPE for sewing machines - he got 1000 all in pieces! A retired Singer employee came forward and made 600 working that got shipped to Rwanda. Community members were trained and now not only provide clothes for their own families but have a commodity to sell at the local market which allows them to buy food and help support the orphanage's expenses In June 2012, the IC3 will participate in an evening fundraiser called "Viva Las Vegas 2" with the “Out of SHAPE” band (through the invitation of Alan Petrie and his wife Robbi Nelson-Petrie) who with Tommy Temple help to sponsor Carine Ashurst walk 200km on The Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James). Carine is donating all monies we raise to the Don Bosco Home for Boys to help with their expenses when the older boys to go back to the Rwandian DB Home to build a shelter that will house those sewing, be protected from the sun and the dust! 11. Le Gai Logis (40 children) IC3 will be planning a visit to this Home this year as we are just learning of the support our community gives. For many years, members of the UK community donate clothing as well as give a monetary donation from the British Fete held each summer. Lasagna’s and tiramisu were seen being made at the SHAPE Chapel by the Italian ladies one afternoon for their children, and the Norwegian Chaplain, tells us they help there too! This past Christmas, an American lady working on SHAPE has for 10 years organized a Christmas party for the children; in early December 2011, the first IC3 fundraiser was held with the “Out of SHAPE” band which raised €450 that helped pay for their gifts. The four band members then donated an afternoon to play at the Home’s Children’s Christmas party with Santa Claus.

18. St. Alfreds, Casteau (Home for mentally and physically handicapped adults) At Christmas time, the MQoP Parish select a name of one of the residents and buy them their requested gift. Sick Children from Chernobyl (Children brought to Belgium for medical treatment – 2nd generation) This special summer project has been happening for the past 26 years; Tommy Temple together with Dr. Pierre Guisset, President of A.S.B.L. Marina Sacha Charity, offered opportunities for SHAPians to help with travel and lodgings expenses to bring in the sickest of the children, still suffering with illnesses born from the disaster, now living in orphanages in Belarus. Last year, SHAPE gave 2000 Euros, Top III organized a BBQ and a dip in the SHAPE Swimming pool, the Protestant Chapel’s Vacation Bible School collected non perishable food for their meals at the gite, and the US Scouts (Boys & Girls) and Cub Troops, with help from Grandma’s Attic, provided three pairs of needed shoes for each child. As of May 2012, obtaining a VISA is presenting a new problem, although we are looking at some options...more to follow. 21. Share a Meal Christmas (SAM) Appeal (Food Box Program for Families in Difficulty at Christmas) SAM, is a separately run Group 2 Activity which allows it to fundraise on SHAPE. SAM is operated under the general supervision of the SHAPE International Chapel Staff Chaplain and the authority of the Commander, Headquarters Support Group (HSG). The current IC3 Coordinator also sits as a Charity Liaison Representative as the conduit between the charities who give the names of the families and the Council. SAM began 27 years ago, with Tommy Temple and a Canadian teacher who approached him wanting to give personalized food boxes to the poor. Tommy, working as the Ecumenical Charity Liaison, and ran a tinned food drive for Food Banks run by the Sisters of Charity, and they delivered donations by car pool! He got the names of 10 families and together they delivered them – hence, SAM was born! This past December, 200 families (50 from each of four charities) were supported. For more info, contact the SAM Sec at [email protected] or to [email protected]. 22. L’Arche de Noé Maisieres (Animal Shelter): Action: cat litter, cat or dog food, open disinfectant/cleaners e.g. as Mr. Clean (Mr. Propre) or Dettol This Shelter currently houses 70 dogs (large and small) and 30 cats. This “not for profit” is not subsidized and sits on a private property; it has a “no-kill” policy. Incredibly clean, they have stringent adoption guidelines offering animals that are fixed, vaccinated and passport chipped. Volunteers are always needed to walk, feed the animals or clean cages. Our IC3 contact plans on volunteering (some French is needed as little English is spoken) and he can be contacted to arrange a delivery of a donation – especially any cleaners would be most appreciated.
